FRESH OR FROSEN - EV 2015 - A BUSY YEAR LOOKING BACK For chiller and freezer systems, whether to use on shore or at sea, the Akureyri company Kælismiðjan Frost is at the forefront. A look through the list of Frost customers, including the Icelandic companies Samherji, HB-Grandi, Ísfélag Vestmannaeyja, Skinney Þinganes, Síldarvinnslan and Vinnslustöðin í Vestmannaeyjum, together with the Faroese companies Pelagos and Varðin Pelagic, quickly reveals that Frost has built and installed freezer systems for some of the North Atlantic's leading seafood companies. Cold stores / chiller rooms Last year Frost delivered a new cold store to Eimskip. Installed in the town of Hafnarfjörður, this storage facility protects up to 10,000 tonnes of frozen products. Integral to the facility are an air-drying system and loading and unloading docks to prevent ice accumulation. In the nearby capital city of Reykjavík, Frost has
delivered spacious chilling and banana-ripening rooms for the import and distribution firm Bananar ehf.
The Icelandic approach Kælismiðjan Frost has cooperated with Skaginn and other seafood service companies during the last two decades on perfecting an “Icelandic approach” to pelagic processing. In this approach, fish is automatically graded, packed, frozen and palletised, reducing greatly the cost of labour, energy and packing material. This attracted the Faroese companies Pelagos and Varðin Pelagic to contract Frost and Skaginn for setting up factories in Suðuroy in 2012 and Fuglafjørður in 2014. Fully automated, these plants reach a capacity of 600 to 1000 tonnes per 24 hours. Since then, Frost and Skaginn have signed a contract with the Icelandic company Eskja on a state-of-the-art, 850-tonne plant for the autumn of 2016.
2016 - STAYING BUSY GOING FORWARD On-board refrigeration Kælismiðjan Frost is also constantly involved off-shore, seeing to the revamping or installing of chilling and freezing systems in fishing vessels.
10
In the course of this and next year, Frost will be providing cooling and refrigerating systems for ten new ships. Included are refrigeration systems in two filleting trawlers for the German company DFFU and in one Canadian prawn trawler, all three of which are being built in Norway, as well as cooling systems for seven wet-fish trawlers which are under construction in Turkey for Icelandic clients.
At least three of the wet-fish trawlers will be fitted with the innovative 3X super-chilling equipment, wherein fish can be cooled to -1°C and stored at that temperature without using ice.
RSW systems By installing or modernising RSW systems in pelagic vessels, Kælismiðjan Frost fulfils the sector's constant demand for improved raw-material handling and superior consumer products. Please visit our website, www.frost.is.
VERY STEP P OF THE WAY DESIGN, SUPPLY, INSTALLATION AND SERVICE OF ONBOARD AND LAND BASED REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS. Refrigeration systems: For more than two decades FROST has been designing and installing onboard and land based refrigeration systems. All our systems are approved by the vessels classification society.
About FROST: FROST is by far the largest company of its kind in Iceland with its headquarters in Akureyri northern Iceland and an affiliate in the Reykjavík area. The company has taken on projects all around Iceland as well as abroad. Projects abroad have been a growing part of our operation with projects in 13 countries in 4 continents last year alone.
Service: The company designs, supplies equipment and installs new refrigeration systems as well as servicing existing systems. FROST offers its customers the service of experienced engineers for troubleshooting and upgrading of existing systems, or for specifying and designing new systems.
FROST works according to ISO 9001. FROST has, last several years, been recognized as one of Iceland’s strongest companies by CREDITINFO.

FUEL SAVINGS Fuel is black gold these days of volatile fuel prices and burning fuel without needing to hurts. Marport gear sensors are designed to play a role as a contributing factor in maximising efficiency, targeting fishing at the most productive spots and keeping fishing time to the minimum needed to fill the fishroom while keeping your fuel bills down
CATCH QUALITY Short tows are the thing. Getting the fish from the water to the fishroom as fast and as fresh as possible it what keeps quality high and prices strong. Marport’s codend sensors aim to tell you when there’s just enough fish in the gear for a prime quality haul, without needing to tow that extra halfhour to be sure.
SUSTAINABILITY In today’s world sustainability has become more than simply a buzzword; it’s an essential aspect of modern fisheries. Today’s approach is to take what you need and leave the rest. Nobody wants to slaughter any golden geese and we aim to provide skippers with the gear they need to align their catches to the needs of the market.
EFFICIENCY Time is money, and cutting down on lost time and wasted effort is the key to streamlining any fishing operation. The better the sensors on the gear and the more detailed the information reaching the skipper, the shorter the time the fishing gear has to be in the water. Our aim is to provide the essential information to keep fishing time strictly to the time needed, without wasting time or effort.
COMPATABILITY Marport’s sensors have been designed from the outset to work seamlessly with other systems. We don’t see why you should have to fit an entire system when a single component needs replacing, so our sensors dovetail with other manufacturers’ sensor arrays and wheelhouse displays.
