INHABITABLE PALIMPSEST “A Museums’ Entrance Plaza” Snug Harbor, Staten Island
Spring 2019 Graduate MFA Thesis Pratt Institute, New York
Statement: Materializing Inhabitable Memories & Architectural Intentions, while revealing Historic Layers can facilitate Place making & Place identity. The thesis perceives an existing built environment as a palimpsest of memories. It explores the memory of how the structure was built and occupied by people. The idea behind the thesis is to create urban places which reinterprets its connections to the past and also evolves with the current design trends. It tests various strategies of editing the interiors to reveal the former layers in order to establish the connections to past and create a sense of belonging. The interlocking Greek Revival buildings at the Snug Harbor in New York State borough of Staten Island, are a group of five buildings which were once home to the retired sailors and now celebrate the naval history of the island. The site chosen to test the thesis idea is one of the five buildings, Building B which would be adapted to serve as an Entrance Plaza to the Museum Complex. Although the buildings are listed under the national historic landmark, I would argue the fact that they can be edited in a manner such that the architectural and historical significances become productive drivers for design and its deterioration can serve as an opportunity to generate new cultures. The interior is adapted for new use but the traces of past are still visible. Various tactics including Excision, Mending, Layering, Revealing are employed to either expose/conceal or interact with the layers and create architectural moments throughout the space. The space should feel contemporary with various opportunities to contemplate the past.

THUNDER “Breaking the Thresholds-A feminist space for TOM TOM Headquarters” Crown Heights, Brooklyn
Spring 2018 Graduate First Year Pratt Institute, New York
Just few decades ago females were domesticized and being a homemaker was supposed to be “feminine activity.” Similarly, other issues like equal representation, right to vote, right to express yourself and safety have been a continuous struggle for females and continues to be even today. But gradually the women are becoming empowered, creating awareness and breaking the existing thresholds in their life. A modern woman is confident, outspoken, multifaceted, ambitious, independent and fearless. She can maintain a balance between her home and work life. The TOM TOM headquarters is one space, led by such females and continuously thriving to create awareness and include a greater population in its mission. Thus the conceptual drive behind the project was to design a space which is breaking these thresholds at all level. I was inspired by the idea of a lightning bolt in a cloud to symbolically represent the break through. The lightning bolt in the project is actually an Urban Street which connects the building through and through from outside to inside. The street becomes a female centric space in the neighborhood. It’s a safe place for females to collaborate, discuss ideas, organize activities or just spend some time. The project is located in the Crown Heights area in Brooklyn. The neighborhood has a predominant male centric space, a men shelter just in the vicinity of the site and does not feel a very safe place to be in.The project responds by being a black box in the neighborhood which tries to make its own distinct identity and is an inviting and safe place for all. We dealt with a real client, the owner of the TOM TOM magazine to understand and incorporate the brands requirement in the space. .

RESONANT BODIES “Designing a physical Drum set for female body”
Spring 2018 Graduate First Year Pratt Institute, New York
The project aimed at designing a Drum Set which is light, easy to transport and the ergonomic meets the female body. The standard drum set is always designed keeping the male anthropometric in mind and female drummers have to put in extra effort in playing them. Thus the idea was to optimize the drum set and design in it in such a way that it can be packed together to form a back pack. Light material such as plywood was used so that it’s easy to carry around and install before and after a performance. The snare and the floor tom is in triangular shape which reduces the distance to the cymbals and fits better between the legs. The top of the drum is tapered to provide a better angle to strike. The base drum is also tapered to provide more volume at rear end.The drums has three finishes such as the plywood, felt and rubber which produces different sound when used with a contact mic. Thus it gives option to play different types of sounds.

TETRIS “Designing a Hub for Innovation and Productivity Industry City, Brooklyn
Fall 2017 Graduate First Year Pratt Institute, New York
The definition of a workplace has evolved a lot during the past decades. An average individual spends most of his time in his workplace. Therefore, it is necessary for the space to be inspiring, stimulates creativity, collaboration and reduces stress and minimizes health problems. It needs to be physically and mentally comfortable. With the advancement in technology and media, there is also a need for the spaces to be flexible to meet the needs of all types of users. The space needs to be flexible in terms of its usage, posture and privacy. Since the site is located in New York, there is always a need to deal with space crunch. The space should be multi usage. A meeting room should be flexible enough to turn into a large conference room and vice versa. Working and sitting at a single spot can be a major health hazard. It is thus necessary to provide various options for seating, standing, lounging, collaboration etc. while working where one spends majority of time. Different People prefer different level of privacy while working to produce quality work. It is necessary to have different work environments to work effectively. Some would not prefer to have a physical connection but would want visual and acoustical boundaries or vice versa. The solution to the option was to have sliding moving partition in the office space where different configuration can be worked out as per the need of the user. The moving partition work both as a partition wall and movable ceiling panels which can be pulled down to achieve total privacy.

RESPONSE “Reinventing Meanings in a Historic Context: Craft and Design Centre” Golcha Garden, Jaipur
Spring 2015 Undergraduate Thesis School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal
The making or remaking of structures cannot be done in void. They always need to respond to some context. Thus it is necessary to know how the response will take place if one has an existing strong context. The challenge is to understand how to respond within such limitations. Responding to the context is necessary and the intervention should integrate the spirit of the place. The thesis is an attempt to design one such built form in a historic context and making decisions as to how should it respond. The context involved is the city of Jaipur. Jaipur’s rich cultural heritage is displayed in the traditions, customs, lifestyle, art and architecture of this place. The city is so rich in its culture and crafts and needs a common platform to showcase it. The proposed program is a Design and Craft Centre where one can experience and learn about the various crafts under one roof. The center is located on one of the properties in Ghat ki Guni. The historic complex of Ghat ki Guni or Purana Ghat is located at a distance of 3 km from Jaipur on the Agra Road. It has an impressive conglomeration of 52 unique properties of great architectural and historic significance within a scenic narrow valley surrounded by sprawling hills through which serpentine road to Agra passes. The concerned site is the Golcha garden site which has the existing Golcha Garden with a palace and a 20th century hat factory which needs to be reused. The center designed on the site is one of the possible responses one can make in the given context.
TIMELESS DECOR “ARTUSI: Italian Restaurant & Bar Gurugram, Haryana
May 2017 Professional Experience Architecture Discipline
Sited in Gurugram, Artusi is one of the top Italian restaurants in the city. The brief was to design a restaurant and bar which is true to the country of origin and not tarnished by the fusion over the years. The idea was to create a space which is simple, inviting and timeless using soft colors and lighting. The approach was to use materials that are classic such as timber and brass with vaulted ceiling but reinterpret them with modern design elements. Custom Designed light fixtures, furniture and vents helps to tie the place together and give it an antique feel. My role was to coordinate the entire project and develop the drawing sets for all stages from conceptual design to working drawings. I was also involved in budgeting and estimating as well attended meetings with client, contactors and administered the construction.

GREEN RETREAT “Waikiki Wetland Resort” Vengurla, Goa
Spring 2014 Architectural Intership Architecture Brio
Strengthening the existing ecosystem, the design for a Resort in Vengurla recreates a waterscape with interconnected ponds and waterbodies around which homes are clustered as stilted pavilions. The site is located near this small fisher’s village behind Vengurla beach and is surrounded by a creek in the north and east and water landscapes on the other sides. The creek was once the landing place for the Dutch where they restocked their ships in their battles with the Portuguese. A 17th century warehouse stands witness to the Dutch activities. The development of the 6 hectares’ site on the southern bank of the creek will include the ecological restoration of an existing lake and the development of 16 holiday homes and a boat house. The site is understood as a landscape in flux over the centuries, eventually destined to become an ideal spot for ecotourism. Renewing the strength of the wetlands surrounding the creek and its diversity as a living ecosystem will promote riparian habitat for migrating birds and endangered wildlife as well as enrich the experience of a lush and rich landscape as a retreat from a busy urban life. My role was to develop presentaion drawings and assist in the design development process. I was part of a three person team including the principal architect.
Stilted villas are situated around several water bodies, forming an interconnected eco system with the recreational lake and creek
