20 Years of Growth! A ‘David vs Goliath’ tale of one small seed company surviving in a giant seed industry.
De Dell Seeds will be celebrating a huge milestone on December 23rd, 2019, as they will be entering their 21st year in business. “It is hard to believe it has been 20 years already,” states Vince Trudell, founder of De Dell Seeds. To Vince it seems like only yesterday when De Dell was operating out of his home, and he was delivering seed in his Volkswagen Jetta. From those humble beginnings, De Dell Seeds has come a long way. Two years ago, they built an office and moved all of their operations into one location near Melbourne, Ontario. One thing that hasn’t changed throughout the years is that De Dell Seeds is still a family-owned Canadian business, that specializes in Non-GMO and Organic corn hybrids. De Dell began operations in 1999 with a goal of providing farmers with healthy and sustainable alternatives to the corporate influence surrounding seed and technology. As a result, they have realized steady growth in both volume and geography since inception. “It hasn’t been easy going against the mainstream, but that is what has made this milestone even sweeter,” Vince boasts! “As our business grows, we are continuing to improve our hybrid portfolio,” says Trudell, “Our breeding program is constantly developing hybrids with better characteristics for the farmer, and, in the last 4 years alone we have added 21 new high-performing hybrids to our lineup”. This brings De Dell’s total to 38 conventional corn hybrids for the 2020 season, ranging from 2000 CHU to 3400 CHU. Of those 38 hybrids, 6 are dedicated silage hybrids offering fantastic feed value, and an astounding 12 hybrids are offered in an organic variant! This level of choice is unparalleled in the conventional corn seed market! Furthermore, De Dell Seeds also offers farmers a choice of seed treatment. Most of De Dell’s conventional hybrids are offered with a choice of untreated seed (bare yellow), treated with a fungicide alone, or treated with a combination of fungicide and insecticide, that is effective but does not contain neonicotinoids. This eliminates the need for the farmer to fill out the paperwork surrounding use of Class 12 pesticides here in Ontario. Having this choice allows farmers to limit their use of pesticides to only what is necessary in the fields that need it. This is more environmentally friendly and allows farmers to be true stewards of their own land. De Dell Seeds is a business with a conscience, and is dedicated to providing high performing, naturally bred corn hybrids for our environment. Check out De Dell Seeds online, in the Ontario Corn Committee results, or for yourself directly on your farm. e www.farmranchdairy.com

Preparing For Difficult Growing Conditions And Beyond
Starter Fertilizers Can Make A Difference! Noel Garcia, CCA Senior Consultant, TPS Lab
C
old, wet weather with low PAR light and few or shortened growing degree-days has made 2019 a disastrous year for agriculture in many parts of the United States. It has delayed planting in some areas and prevented planting in others – all resulting in a shortened growing season. Much of the same has been predicted for 2020. Developing a plan to mitigate the effects of difficult field conditions is essential for the farmer to survive and crops will need all the help they can get at the very start. So, what do we do to play catch-up and even avoid having to replant? “Pop-Up”/Starter Fertilizers can be game-changers to your ultimate success. Getting your crop off to a healthy, strong start is more important than ever in persistently poor conditions. Conditions such as compaction, crusting, cold soil temperatures, salinity and wet/dry soils are detrimental to most crops. Achieving good starts with rapid and strong early root development is essential - then followed by in-season monitoring utilizing sap analysis to proactively achieve balanced nutrition. While season-long balanced plant nutrition is needed to minimize plant stress for best yields and quality, phosphorous is the foundation for good roots, early fruiting and uniform maturity. Utilizing proper adjuvants based on soil type is essential for keeping the phosphorus plant-bioavailable for an extended period of time to keep the rhizosphere active during less than ideal conditions. The solubilities of other elements to form compounds holding or binding phosphorous are directly related to soil pH. The pH range of greatest phosphorus availability is 6.0 to 7.0. At a lower pH (< 6.0), when the soil is very acidic, more iron and aluminum are available to form insoluble phosphate compounds. In strongly alkaline soils (> 7.0), more calcium and magnesium are available forming insoluble phosphate resulting less available phosphorus. The use of starter fertilizer is a source of debate for many agronomists. Most growers see the benefit of early uniform harvest but are likely to over-fertilize. There are hazards to using fertilizer in close proximity to the seed and this scaresoff many advisors from recommending it. Like physicians, advisors’ first concern is to “do no harm”. It is easiest to say, “Just Don’t Do it”. But in dire times, the battle for profitability and survival requires stepping out of a traditional “safe” zone. Due to their close proximity to the roots, starter fertilizers 10 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
in particular, with high salt indices are to be avoided, as they cause reverse osmotic pressures on the roots resulting in dehydration of the plant – resulting in stress or death. Accordingly, components of starters must be carefully researched and selected. The risk of seedling injury is higher in sandy soils due to the low CEC of such soils causing more nutrients to remain in solution. The injury risk increases under dry conditions because of higher concentration near the seed for extended periods of time. Salt injury from fertilizers is typically not a problem if fertilizer and plant roots are separated by time, distance, or both. Starter placement for maximum benefit has been shown by research to be most beneficial when germinating seeds’ first roots immediately hit a band of high phosphorous - especially in cold, wet soils. It is safest to place the band of starter fertilizer in-furrow in a 2x2 band (two inches below and two inches on each side of the seed). With this placement, the risk of seedling injury is virtually nonexistent. Be aware that the benefit of early phosphorous decreases by each additional half-inch away from the seed. Seed treatments are now available for sown crops. Dr. F.L. Fisher of Texas A&M University was one of the first researchers in starter fertilizer in the early 1960s. Phosphorous by itself is seldom harmful. It is the other plant nutrients in fertilizer which have high salt that can harm germination and plant growth. Nitrogen, potassium and sulfur have high salt indices and should be kept to a minimum but are beneficial early as are micronutrients such as zinc, iron, manganese, copper and boron in minute amounts. Use fertilizer sources and rates that minimize the chance for injury. In addition to salt injury, some N compounds (such as UAN, urea, and ammonium thiosulfate) produce free ammonia, which can cause poor germination or seedling death. The best fertilizers for seed-row application have a low salt index and N compounds that do not produce free ammonia, and potassium phosphate rather than potassium chloride as the K source. Additions of carbon sources such as humic/fulvic acids, amino acids and sugars also help protect the seed and buffer the fertilizers. They also help keep the fertilizer in a bioavailable form for extended periods - especially in cold or alkaline soils. These carbon sources also feed the soil life thus increasing the microbial activity which slightly raises the soil

Corrosion – Why Do You Put Up with It? By: Richard A. Nay, CEO – Van Nay Corporation
I
t’s not the “Circle of Life,” it’s the “Circle of Destruction.” Premature corrosion of your equipment costs you plenty, and the manufacturers get away with it. While some may care, others blame the paint/coatings suppliers, or simply say “your corrosion warranty just expired.” Look at your own equipment – your expensive machinery, how does it look? Or better yet, how is it performing? Is corrosion eating away your equipment? Is your equipment lasting as long as the manufacturer suggests? Recently, I visited with a world-class trailer manufacturer in the Midwest. This manufacturer was quite busy, saying things like, “Sales are great. We can’t make them fast enough.” The facility was clean, and the employees were proudly doing their jobs. I asked, “What do you do to prevent corrosion?” to which they replied, “We paint them and ship them.” “What about corrosion warranty?” I asked. “One-year corrosion warranty” I was told, “That’s all we need.” According to a NACE Corrosion Cost Study (2016), “The global cost of corrosion is estimated to be $2.5 trillion.” Why do you put up with manufacturers that sell you on the “Circle of Destruction?” Much more can be done if you insist on corrosion prevention, and I mean insist. Do your written bid specifications include what you want done to prevent corrosion? Let me explain. Much of the equipment manufactured today is made and assembled with aluminum using steel or stainless-steel hardware. While today’s extruded aluminum is strong and light, many have shiny composite or plastic outer skins. But what about what’s underneath? Manufactures take great pride in producing your equipment painted with high quality urethane paint. They look good outside until the “Circle of Destruction” begins. Aluminum held together with steel hardware will always corrode. Some soon, some later, but they will always corrode. I have seen a $1 million fire www.farmranchdairy.com
truck that had significant corrosion around door handles, and the truck was only 45 days old. The manufacturer took care of the warranty, but at what cost? Would you be comfortable getting this truck back being told it was “just a bad paint problem?” Some OEM paint coating suppliers just roll over and cover or help cover warranty costs. The “Circle of Destruction” goes like this: You order equipment, they manufacture the equipment, you have corrosion issues, and then downtime. Sometimes this same unit has corrosion issues multiple times. Why do you put up with it? Recently, a world-class equipment manufacture showed me an ASTM B-117 lab test showing a frame rail piece that split open due to dissimilar metal (galvanic) corrosion. Mylar tape was used to isolate the aluminum and steel. The tape was ineffective and helped cause the corrosive destruction by trapping unwanted moisture. This manufacturer has since stopped using Mylar Tape, replacing it with Eck® Corrosion Prevention Coating. What can you do? When ordering or doing your specification, make corro-
sion prevention part of your requirements. I believe that corrosion prevention is like a 3-legged stool. One leg needs to create a barrier between the two different metals that are assembled. This barrier must stay moist to keep it from cracking and falling out. Another leg of the stool needs to seal out moisture, which includes sweating and condensation that acts as an electrolyte, allowing dissimilar metals to make contact. And finally, the last leg is most important. This leg is Zinc ingredients that act sacrificial, keeping the other metals from corroding. Simple as it may seem, choosing a coating that provides all three of these stool legs will make your equipment last longer. Don’t be sold on the “Circle of Destruction.” Be proactive about corrosion prevention with your equipment. Only the patented Eck® Corrosion Coating can give you all three types of corrosion protection. Is your equipment built and protected with Eck Corrosion Coating? Find out more information about the patented Eck® corrosion prevention products at www.eckcorrosion.com e Richard Nay Sr., President / CEO, Van Nay, LLC.

As long as water is moving, it will not freeze. Our Freeze Valve is infinitely adjustable from a full stream to a pinpoint stream or off for summer. It can be adjusted to deliver as little as 2 gallons in 3 hours. If your trough is of reasonable size, the additional water at night when few animals drink will not overflow the trough. The arm on our Weight Valves are hinged so it pushes the valve open when the water level goes down. Because the freeze valve will deliver water at night (when no animals are drinking) the weight floats up, but will put no pressure on the valve. This is unlike a float valve, because any water added to the tank (and not drank by animals) will submerge the float and bend the float arm, potentially destroying the float valve.

Natural Insecto Products
I
NSECTO is an insecticide alternative to chemical poison’s used for control of grain insects and house insects. INSECTO has been registered with the USA Environmental Protection Agency since 1984 (EPA Reg. # 48598-1). INSECTO is a formulation of a very refined (Micron average size 7) saltwater Diatomaceous Earth (DE) blended with several protein food products which act as baits. DE is the skeletal remains of plankton which feels similar to talcum powder, however when viewed under a microscope, one can see the sharp jagged edges on the DE which basically cuts up and breaks down insects waxy protective coatings. Also, the saltwater DE absorbs up to 175% of its weight in fluids compared to only 150% for freshwater DE. DE is allowed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Human and Animal food products up to 2% of weight; it is used as an AntiCaking agent in many food products.
INSECTO kills insects by cutting up the insects bodies, than absorbs their body fluids, which leads to their deaths by dehydration; a physical kill rather than a chemical kill. Insects don’t build up a resistance to INSECTO, unlike chemical pesticides. INSECTO is labeled with the EPA “For Organic Production” and is listed with the Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI).
INSECTO has been and is being used by Bunge, Cargill, Consolidated Grain & Barge, ADM and other large companies for several decades, along with on farm storage by thousands for farmers
around the United States and Canada. INSECTO has been exported to Japan, UAE, Israel, Jamaica, Brazil, Nicaragua, and several other countries. INSECTO is now being used in Poultry Housing for control of Mites, Darkling Beetles, Lesser Mealworms and other insects which plague this industry. Insects in poultry houses are destroying the insulations as well as adversely affecting the health of the birds. INSECTO should be blown in at a rate up to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet of surface area. INSECTO was originally developed as an alternative to the chemical poisons which were in wide use in the 1970’s and 80’s, and has become one of the few registered insecticides on the market today. Control your insect problems today and in the future with INSECTO. e

fter carefully listening to customers who were disappointed with the performance or lack of features in ATV sprayers available, C & R Supply set out to design a series, or family of sprayers to meet their needs. The family began with the EZ ATV Sprayer which features a unique tank design that was created with input from customers and ATV manufacturers. Using this input, and keeping the operator in mind the EZ ATV Sprayer was designed for ease of operation, functional ability and safety. The design was a success! This unit has been in demand since 1998 and continues to hold a strong presence in the market today. The EZ ATV Sprayer has a sleek design which brings the weight forward and more to a center of gravity for better machine balance. Allowing the legs of the tank to wrap around the fenders of the ATV gives the sprayers dual sumps maximum drainage and the ability to run on side hills without losing its prime. The pump, strainer, and main shut off are mounted underneath the tank in a protected cavity, which also serves as a dual slosh baffle. The top of the tank is designed with a fill catch area to prevent chemical from getting on the operator. The EZ Sprayer is fitted with a 4 gpm Shurflo Pump and a quality Tee-Jet trigger style handgun in the convenient control panel at your side. All brackets and boomless nozzle or boom accessories are attached to the tank for quick and easy mounting. The EZ ATV Sprayer has several different options and accessories to meet your needs.

temperature, enhancing germination. Areas with potential for heavy surface crusting that may interfere with germination, over-the-top applications of soil inoculants (beneficial soil bacteria) can help alleviate this potential problem. Additionally, a multiple hormone (auxin, cytokinin, gibberellins, seaweed/kelp) formula can yield dramatic results, especially during prolonged bad weather. Root systems are a plant’s lifeline and the use of plant hormones with starter fertilizers or foliar-applied can give a plant the best chance at success. The bigger and healthier the root system, the bigger and healthier the plant. It has been proven that the use of these products can: • Promote the growth of roots and shoots; • Improve early season vigor; • Enhance a crop’s ability to produce its own natural growth hormones; • Reduce early season stress with increased healing abilities; • Increase the overall health of the plant, and • Increase both yield and quality. Again, many consultants avoid using these, as they don’t well understand them and they must be fairly precisely applied. Phosphorous can be sprayed directly on the seed but caution is advised, as too much of any good thing can be harmful. Use products that are designed for foliar application and have low salt indices. Only one quart per acre of a high phosphorous formula next to the seed is needed to produce benefits. It is generally recommended that one to three gallons per acre of a high P formula be used that contains a balance of nutrients. This should be mixed with enough water to allow accurate application. Five gallons per acre total solution is minimum but a 10-gallon per row-acre rate would be much better for dilution as well as accuracy of application. Application equipment must also be functioning properly to deliver uniform rates of starter fertilizer when using in-furrow placement. Fertilizer injury often occurs from problems with application equipment on the planter. A common problem is getting rates too high due to improper settings or calibration, or unequal distribution on liquid systems (some rows receiving more than others) that can lead to over-application and fertilizer salt injury. Foliar applications while crops are under stress from excess soil moisture and cloudy conditions for extended periods are highly effective. Plants under prolonged anaerobic conditions will be stressed and have retarded development. Supplementing with a balanced phosphorous formula can boost plants while mitigating stress and enhancing development. Guidance from sap analysis at critical stages of plant development is used to formulate the proper foliar program and customize it to specific crop needs. This is essential to playing catch-up in times of duress. First feeding the soil and then the plants with a balanced diet at their critical stages of growth will accelerate maturity, lower production costs and increase yields and profits. e www.farmranchdairy.com

Meet the all-new Bale Baron 5250!
B
uilding on the original design principles that Bale Baron owners appreciate, the new 5250 models feature many impressive upgrades designed to improve productivity and serviceability while still maintaining the outstanding reliability the Bale Baron brand is all so well known for. This year Marcrest Manufacturing Inc released 2 new models; the all-new 5250 and the refined 4250. Both of these units are available in the P (pick-up) and T (trail) models. The 5250 has a hydraulic requirement of 40 gallons per minute while the 4250 requires 30 gallons per minute. Let’s walk around the 5250 and see what fantastic upgrades have been made. At first glance you can immediately notice the wider front stance and wide flotation rear tires which keep the 5250 firmly planted. You will also see that the body work has been completely remodeled and looks fantastic! The ladder has been conveniently attached on a generous angle allowing for safer climbing to the knotter. Upon opening the knotter cover the relocated and re-engineered knotter miss-tie sensors cannot be missed; the new sensor location is a sure-fire way to detect actual knotter miss-ties. Another upgrade to the already extremely reliable low maintenance Rasspe knotter is the 4-lobe knotter sprocket which reduces the knotter cycle time by 25%! After the easy climb down the angled ladder you will notice the massive twine boxes, which swing out to allow full exposure to the compression chamber
www.farmranchdairy.com
and hydraulic lines for inspection and maintenance purposes. While walking around the 5250 one can easily notice that there are no grease nipples on all pivot points; this is achieved by using nitride treated pins paired with composite bushings. This design has been proven and adopted from the 6240 self-propelled Bale Baron. A serious feature that has not been mentioned is the ISOBUS compatible PLC. What does that mean? It means that if your tractor has ISOBUS the 5250 can be fully controlled and monitored right from the seat in your tractor! Ahh, no, my tractor doesn’t have ISOBUS?... No worries, there are ISOBUS screens available from Marcrest! And for those who aren’t into the latest and greatest technology, the 5250 can easily be operated by our ever-proven standard cab control box. Now let’s take a quick look at the 4250. It has maintained the same body work and stance as the 4240/4245. However, it shares some of the fantastic upgrades mentioned on the 5250 such as the greaseless pivot points thanks to the nitride treated pins and composite bushings. It also has the new 4 lobe knotter sprocket on the low maintenance Rasspe knotter for faster tie cycles. And like its big cousin the 4250 also has the new ISOBUS compatible PLC which means ISOBUS connectivity is ready and available for the 4250 when you are. Duck Foot Tines Help Farmers Save Time and Money
D
id you know that 80% of soybean loss occurs at the header? Grain loss was the reason behind the development of the Duck Foot paddle tine. Saskatchewan farmer, Steve Kastning, was tired of watching his lentils sit and shake on the cutter bar and fall on the ground. He had previously used things like belting or duct tape but wanted something better. So, he got innovative and created a part that works with the regular tines on a combine header, clipping right over top. The wide paddle-like design feeds crop that standard tines can miss. It has proven to increase yield in most specialty crops as well as short and thin crops. What started as an idea in 2015 has led to Duck Foot Parts Inc. The Duck Foot was first made to fit MacDon headers as that’s what Steve used himself. However, due to farmer interest for other headers, the product line is expanding, and a new part made to fit John Deere and Hart Carter reels will be available for the 2020 harvest.
The most significant feature of the Duck Foot is that it quickly and easily slides over the existing tine and attaches to the reel pipe, with no tools
required. A new feature is a clip that is included to further secure the paddle tine in place. It is recommended to outfit a header with the Duck Foot on
every second tine, no less than every third. Customers see the benefit of constantly moving the crop for less header loss and a more even feed for better threshing. The combine operator can slow their reel speed which prevents shelling and stripping meanwhile allowing for an increase in ground speed. Steve and Chrisa Kastning attended their first trade show, Canada’s Farm Progress Show, in 2018 as a new innovation where they were awarded a Sterling Innovation Award. Since then they have attended numerous events in Canada, the United States and Australia meeting directly with farmers and farm dealers to discuss how the Duck Foot can improve yields and speed up harvest. You can see the list of upcoming trade shows they’ll be attending under the ‘News’ heading on their website. Steve and Chrisa are connected to their product and to providing exceptional customer service. For more information, please visit www.duckfootparts.ca or call 1 (306) 903-7448. e

Kuhns Mfg. “ No Hydraulics or Electronics”
I
n the summer of 2002, Kenny Kuhns, a hay farmer in northeastern Ohio, decided he needed a more efficient way to handle hay. With small hobby farmers composing most of his customer base, he couldn’t switch to large square or round bales. But with several hundred acres of hay, most of it far from his barns, he needed a mechanical handling system.
Kuhns had tried a hay accumulator, a machine designed to leave bales in groups throughout the field. A specially designed grapple moved these groups of bales wherever they
needed to go. This worked well enough under the right conditions, but constant rain, uneven fields, and the occasional ill-formed bale made the right conditions a rarity. These complaints convinced Kuhns that he needed something better, but none of the other available designs really fit his needs. With constant rain keeping him out of the fields, Kuhns decided to use his time to design his own accumulator. Kuhns started by making a list of necessary features. His machine had to be simple (no hydraulics or electronics), fully automatic, and adaptable to all conditions, including muddy fields, stubble, and unevenly sized bales. He also wanted the bales to be on edge for better curing, since hay for horses must cure almost perfectly to avoid forming dust. By August of 2002, the first model was ready to test. It had several completely new features, most notably a twisted chute to get the bales on edge, and a raised platform that used gravity to sort the bales. Though the first test failed—the machine was too narrow to allow bales to slide easily—it came close enough to convince Kuhns that his concept could work. He set to work tweaking the design, removing one glitch after another. Finally, after three years of tweaking, he had a product that fit all of his criteria. With a patent pending on the design, he went into full production under the name Kuhns Mfg. LLC. Having already exceeded his production goal for the year, he is now grateful for the “ruinous” rains of 2002. e

Texas A&M University and Beefmaster Breed Join Forces
T
exas A&M University (TAMU) in College Station, Texas is making a change in direction for their beef cattle herd. They have made the decision to upgrade with two new breeds, Beefmaster and Red Angus. Beefmaster Breeders United has been working with TAMU leadership since the fall of 2018 on this project. This partnership demonstrates that Beefmaster cattle are being recognized for outstanding maternal traits, growth, efficiency and adaptability not just in Texas, but globally. “There are multiple reasons why we decided to initiate a herd with Beefmasters,” said TAMU Animal Science Department Head Dr. Cliff Lamb. “Globally, about 70% of the world’s beef cattle are in tropical or sub-tropical regions. It is certainly a reason to have a breed that is associated with the ability to adapt to those climates.” Dr. Lamb is determined to make the Texas A&M Beef Center a highlight for the Animal Science Department. Lamb and his team would like to create the best possible cow herd for teaching, research and demonstrations, as well as be a place for visitors and international guests. “We made a decision early on that we were going to establish a reputable Beefmaster herd, along with a Bos taurus based breed, so we could use this as front door to our department,” Dr. Lamb stated. This is a tremendous opportunity for the Beefmaster breed to become a part of a leading agricultural university’s quest to build a premier Beefmaster herd. Beefmaster breeders are cur-
rently in the process of nominating their embryo donations. Embryo selections from the pool of nominated genetics will be made by TAMU personnel. Their goal is to source at least 120 embryos of high genetic merit, based on the approved EPD parameters, to build an early spring calving Beefmaster herd. Their second new herd of Red Angus cattle was initiated last fall and has been set up as a fall calving herd. “The Beefmaster cattle are going to be at our Beef Center and we are going to utilize those Beefmasters to not only teach classes and educate producers, but we are also going to utilize that herd to do some cutting edge research that will have a positive impact on not only livestock producers in Texas, but around the world,” stated Lamb. According to Lamb, the Beefmaster females in their herd will be of high-genetic merit and with these animals they will investigate some fundamental research associated with reproduction, genetics and carcass-based traits. The department’s goal is to be able to identify things that they can take into their other larger cattle herds that belong to the department and utilize those ideas they developed, then further expand those technologies on a larger scale somewhere else. Ultimately, distributing that information out to livestock producers. “We certainly are excited about this and we certainly value what the Beefmaster breed is doing in terms of helping us get this herd established,” said Lamb. For more information about BBU please contact the office at 210-732-3132 or visit www.beefmasters.org. e

Rawhide Portable Corral to blend the Old with the New
J
ohn McDonald knows a thing or two about livestock equipment after working with cattle and rodeo livestock most of his life. Knowing there had to be a better portable corral design out there; he came up with it himself. In 2003 the public was introduced to his original Rawhide Portable Corral. It could be set up by one person without any lifting and it could be done quickly; yet it could also be pulled down the road at highway speeds, ensuring that no time would be wasted while catching cattle. Fast forward to 2018 and now customers have two different corrals to choose from; the Rawhide Original, throwback to the first design, or the Rawhide Processor. Even though the Processor’s design is viewed as the superior portable corral on the market, John believes that there are still those who will want a smaller, more affordable system. Enter the Rawhide Original, which is a blend between the two designs he has offered throughout the years and has a bumper hitch with permanent transport

wheels. The Original is only offered in the Standard and Large sizes. The Processor is offered in three sizes for the convenience of ranchers and cattle producers throughout the world and the main difference with this design is the ability to customize the corral upon ordering by including a hydraulic alley, head gate or loading chute. Whether you simply want to catch your cattle or process them on site and load them into a trailer from
the pasture, you are able to do so with the Processor. The design of the Processor continues to impress cattle producers with its versatility and ease of use. The permanent sheeted adjustable alley aids with working your livestock, whether it is done on site or in the field. The adjustable alley can be sized from thirty (30) inches down to sixteen (16) inches; either manually or hydraulically. The most notable features of the Rawhide corrals are that they are easy to set up and they are easy to transport. We mean it when we say that one person can open up the corral without lifting a panel. This will continue to be the model as we move forward with our newer designs. The key is one person can handle it all by themselves. Customers can manipulate the panels so it is not just one big pen, but two, three or even four pens for sorting, as one can never have enough pens when it comes to working cattle. John’s design was the first portable corral on the market to offer the hydraulic lift option. This has been so popular that we now offer customers the option to buy the Hydraulic Lift Kit with or without the battery so that they may upgrade existing equipment of their own. A lift kit includes the jack, power unit, solar panel and of course the option of including a battery at time of purchase. John and his wife Mary run the family business at their manufacturing plant in Abilene, Kansas, which is the only place where a Rawhide may be purchased outside of South Texas, where we now have a dealer in Hempstead. Animal plasma in calf milk replacers By: Rob Costello
A
nimal plasma provides a unique protein source which is often referred to as functional proteins. These functional proteins contain biologically active albumin and globulin proteins. Immunoglobulins such as IgG are important antibodies that circulate in plasma. Animal plasma is a highly soluble, high-quality protein source with an amino acid profile and nutritive value comparable to nonfat dried (skim) milk and casein. Animal plasma was introduced in commercial calf milk replacers more than 20 years ago. Today, about one third of all calf milk replacers made in the United States contain plasma. Large calf ranches where calves are co-mingled and often have not received adequate colostrum are the major users of animal plasma milk replacers. These operations recognize the advantage of plasma from a health perspective as well as a cost savings. In the digestive tract As well as being an excellent source of nutrition for young calves, animal plasma has additional beneficial effects in the digestive tract. During the first two weeks of life, the calf secretes a portion of the immunoglobulins it absorbed from colostrum back into its digestive tract. The more colostrum absorbed, the more immunoglobulins secreted. This recycling of immunoglobulins helps protect the calf against diseasecausing pathogens. Providing animal plasma in milk replacer increases immunoglobulin levels in the digestive tract and provides an ongoing source after the calf has stopped secreting immunoglobulins from its own bloodstream. Research with both young calves and baby pigs demonstrates that feeding animal plasma to young animals has a direct effect on the integrity and function of the small intestine. Animal plasma may directly affect antigen growth and attachment in the small intestine, affecting intestinal growth and improving its barrier function. Calf performance There have been at least 30 trials conducted to evaluate the effects of animal plasma on the growth and performance of baby calves. In these trials, plasma always performed as well as or better than all-milk protein milk replacers. Improvements include: • Fewer, shorter scour episodes • Reduced medical costs • Better gain • More starter intake • Lower cost than all-milk-protein milk replacers Animal plasma characteristics • 78% protein, 0.3% fat, 0.5% fiber, 7% moisture, 8.5% ash • Light tan color that does not change the color, aroma or solubility of the milk replacer For more information, contact Jessica at MC Sales, 630957-7027. e 36 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy

Golden Hz Farms F
.N. Bard wanted a tough cow that could make him money in the Arizona back country. He couldn’t find that in any existing breeds, so he set out to make his own. The Barzona was developed by selecting entirely on performance, to produce a cow that would handle the rough terrain, less than favorable living conditions and still breed. Barzona cattle are used in rough country, often times being the only cattle that will reliably bring calves back with them in the fall. Here at Golden Hz Farms, we aren’t necessarily in rough country, but we believe in holding up the standards that F.N. Bard required. Bard cows were required to wean a calf 4 out of every 5 years, no matter what the environmental conditions. Our cows are given only basic supplements, are required to have some natural resistance to parasites, and we track successful production records measured by weaned calves. Calves are born small (less than 70 lbs, average is 55-60) and are streamline shaped for calving ease. They are vigorous, often getting up and traveling within 15 minutes of being born. Compared to the Barzona of old, temperament is rarely an issue. We select heavily for quiet cattle that are easy to handle. Marbling is a distinct trait, with 15% of our
market cattle grading Prime at Omaha Pack. These are no maintenance cattle that take care of themselves, no matter if you look at them twice a day or twice a year. The goal is profit, and any rancher knows you can’t control the market. You have to control your inputs. So if you are ready for a cow that can ease your work load, invest in Barzona–a working cow, ready for a job with you. e

American Agra Curtains Inc. The Original Customized Insulated Curtain For Livestock Buildings
I
n the early eighties, virtually all of the “Farrow-toFinish” swine confinements were single story buildings with make-shift ventilation systems constructed as the individual builder saw fit. In the attempt to improve ventilation, standardize construction, and cut costs, an automated insulated curtain system was designed. The original multi-layered insulated curtain was developed and patented in 1984 by Carolyn Henderson, American Agra Curtain’s president at the time. Since then, many modifications and improvements have been incorporated into their insulated curtain which is marketed under the name of Insulated MAR-CO- LITE. Most of their curtains are still on the job after seven or eight years of service. In addition to their insulated curtains, they have many other products designed specifically for the agricultural building industry such as room and shop dividers, fan covers, bird barriers, pulleys, stainless steel cable, rope, cord, split bolts, curtain clips, and insulated curtains with no film for dairies, concrete blankets, sidewall insulation for garages, door cov-
ers for basement rooms, and crawl space covers. Installation instructions are included with all orders. Call 765-564-3979 and see what they can do for you. e
