Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft web.com Event The Skins Game Continues – With a Twist!

T

he skins game, always a crowd favorite, returned with a new twist to kick off the 23rd Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft. In a Boise State versus University of Idaho versus University of Oregon matchup, three 2-man teams squared off against each other for dollars – and bragging rights – for the three schools. Web. com Tour player Troy Merritt and PGA TOUR player Graham DeLaet, both BSU alums, represented the Broncos golf team. Web.com Tour player Sam Saunders, grandson of Arnold Palmer, and 2-time RE/MAX World Long Drive champion Jamie Sadlowski represented the Idaho Vandals, while the Oregon Ducks golf team was represented by the former PGA TOUR player and current coach of the Oregon Ducks golf team Casey Martin and current web.com Tour player Andres Gonzales. The three teams went head-to-head…-to-head for $50,000 in skins. Team Vandals and Team Ducks each

won $20,000 in skins, then halved the 9th and final hole worth a $10,000 skin. In a great show of sportsmanship, both teams decided to give it to Team Broncos rather than playing off for the final skin. Of the six players, only DeLaet didn’t stay and play in the Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft. Saunders, Martin and Gonzales all made the cut, with Saunders finishing in a tie for 32nd. Martin tied for 55th, and Gonzales finished 69th. Merrit and Sadlowski both failed to make it to the weekend. Jeff Sanders Promotions In addition to the stability of holding the event at the same location with the same sponsor every year, the Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft has also been managed and promoted by the same company every year of its 23-year existence. Jeff Sanders Promotions has longstanding excellent relationships with the PGA TOUR and the United States Golf

Association. Jeff Sanders Promotions has been the tournament management company for the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft since its inception in 1990 as one of the original members of the Ben Hogan Tour. Currently, their schedule of events also includes the web.com Tour’s Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open Presented by Planters at the Dye’s Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. In addition, Jeff Sanders Promotions was the exclusive management company on both the1996 United States Amateur and the 1997 United States Women’s Open golf championships. Along with producing TOUR events and National Championships, Jeff Sanders Promotions has produced high profile celebrity tournaments, major charity events and the highly acclaimed regional professional golf events in the United States. Guthrie Wins 2012 web.com Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft Sept 16, 2012 BOISE, Idaho – They say it’s not how you start but how you finish that counts. For 22-year-old web.com Tour rookie Luke Guthrie, it was both on Sunday, Sept. 16th at Boise’s Hillcrest Country Club. Playing in just his sixth web.com Tour event, Guthrie started the fourth round going 3 under for the first 3 holes, and finished by going 2 under for the last 4 holes to cap a final-round 65 en route to a tournament-record 22-under total for his first win as a pro, 4 strokes better than the nearest challengers. Richard H Lee, Scott Gardiner, Michael Putnam and Steve Wheatcroft all finished tied for second in a logjam at 18-under par in the 23rd Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft. Golf fans in Idaho’s Treasure Valley were treated to a week of record-breaking golf in this year’s Albertsons Boise Open. Under mostly sunny skies, warm temperatures and little to no wind, the

scores were low from Day One on. In the opening round, 104 players were under par for the day, highlighted by Putnam, Andrew Svoboda and Tyrone van Aswegen all going low-low with 9-under 62s, tying for lowest open-

2012 Albertson’s Boise Open Champion Luke Guthrie

ing round scores in the 23 years of the tourney. Two more players shot 63, with Guthrie and Sam Saunders tying for sixth place at 64. In fact, of the 156

players entered, there were only eight players who finished the day more than 2-over par. The opening-round assault ended up with another tournament record, this for the lowest first round scoring average (69.365). Putnam followed up his first-round 62 with a 65 in Friday’s second round for a tournament-record 15-under par and a two stroke lead over Lee, who shot a 62 of his own to get into contention. And while Guthrie slipped to an even-par 71, with the way players were scoring, anything was possible. All told, Friday produced an even lower scoring average (68.966) than Thursday, and was the lowest average of any single round in tournament history. It also produced a cut-line of 5-under par, tying another record for the tournament. Saturday came, and Putnam continued to break records and remain the one to beat. He shot a 3-under 68 to set yet anContinued on page 16

his museum offers so much to see. A rich region spills over with archaeology, paleontology and geology and the museum displays reflect this. The newly mounted Utahraptor “greets” you in the lobby in a spectacular action pose. There is a Hall of Paleontology, where you can see many dinosaur mounts of creatures such as the Allosaurus, Utah’s state vertebrate fossil, a camptosaur, stegosaurus and more. A unique opportunity at the museum are the Observation Labs where the visitor can speak one on one with a preparator and see the behind the scenes action. The delightful discovery area for the kids is a favorite where children can unearth dinosaur bones, search for pottery sherds or participate in an array of hands on activities. The museum also offers a Hall of Archaeology where you can see Native American exhibits and Ice Age Mammals such as the Huntington Mammoth and the Sabertooth. Here you will find the remark-

able clay artifacts, known the world over as the Pilling Figurines. They continue to excite archaeologists and pose mysteries about the Fremont Culture.

The Prehistoric Museum, USU EasternExploring life 200 million years in the making

Both the Hall of Paleontology and the Hall of Archaeology include two levels with fabulous views both up and down. A cell phone tour enhances the experience with an abundance of information on select exhibits. The Castle Country Regional Informa-

tion Center is located in the museum lobby. Information Specialists are eager to assist with everything from weather and road conditions to finding a hotel or a place to eat. The information center contains a vast array of free brochures, literature and maps to assist you with all of your travel needs. Located on the second floor, directly above the information center is the art gallery. Exhibitions rotate year-round and are always a delight to visitors. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, The Prehistoric Museum, USU Eastern is one of only five accredited institutions in the state of Utah and the only accredited facility located off the Wasatch front. It is also a state and federal repository. Plan your visit today, because “There’s No Time Like The Past”! National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Preserving, sharing and honoring the mining story.

F

ire in the hole! This classic warning from powder-monkeys, miners who set explosives, still rings out in the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum today. Begin your self-guided tour by walking up the stairs to the renovated 1899 high school building. You will be greeted by a friendly admissions assistant. View a model of the railroad located in Leadville, Colorado during the mining days. Walk through the Hard Rock Mine, a reconstruction of a blacksmith’s shop and mine complete with authentic sounds. Exit into the Gold Rush room, where you can find fascinating information about gold rushes in your state, and a 24-oz. gold nugget! The museum contains five levels of shining crystals, mining history, photographs, and mining equipment. Three mine reconstructions, a full-size molybdenum car, and a Gift Gallery featuring books, gold panning kits, onyx chess sets, and jewelry mean there is something for everyone to see in the National Mining Museum. Hold your meeting or wedding reception in one of the spacious Convention Center meeting rooms or

ballroom. From May through September, visit the Matchless Mine, a famous silver mine purchased by Horace Tabor in the 1879, and the cabin where Baby Doe Tabor lived for 35 years in her continual search for more silver.

Since its incorporation in 1977, and following its national charter signed by President Reagan in 1988, the National Mining Museum has often been the location of the Induction Banquet, held annually to install people instrumental to the development of the mining indus-

try into the Hall of Fame. The Matchless Summer Series is a round of costumed interpreters, knowledgeable lecturers, and exciting tours that engage people with Leadville and mining. Leadville is also home to Boom Days, a rip-roaring adventure that recreates the excitement of the Wild West. The National Mining Museum is located at 120 W. 9th Street in Leadville, Colorado. It is within walking distance of restaurants, antique shops, and historical points of interest. In the summer, hiking and mountain biking are available for outdoors adventurers, and in the winter, ice skating and sledding. Leadville is also a short drive away from ski resorts like Copper Mountain, Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge. The Museum is open year round, 9-5 summer hours, and 11-6 winter hours. Admission: $7 Adults, $3 Children; AAA, Senior, and Group discounts available. Info: 719-486-1229, mininghalloffame.org. The National Mining Museum is a private non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Funding comes from memberships, admissions, grants, donation, events, and facility rentals. RH

Hidden Wine Industry Emerging into its Own

I

daho’s famous potatoes have started to share the limelight with another great agriculture product, grapes. Tucked between the Rocky Mountains and the Snake River lies a perfect climate for growing grapes and crafting extraordinary award winning wines. The climate is moderate with limited precipitation and a consistent growing season that adds complexity and uniqueness to the grapes. Idaho grows and produces vinifera wine grape varieties such as Syrah and Viognier, as well as classic varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling. Idaho has more than doubled the number of wineries in the last 10 years and has added acreage, now holding 43 wineries and 30 wine grape growers. Officially designated in April 2007, the Snake River Valley Appellation is the first registered AVA (American Vi-

ticulture Area) for the state. The 8,263 square miles of AVA stretches East to Twin Falls, and West to Oregon, including 12 Idaho counties in-between. The large size of the AVA works in favor for Idaho and offers a chance for growth. Vintners, viticulturalists, soil experts and geologists insist that Idaho’s high desert terrain; volcanic soil, hot days and cool nights create the perfect environment to grow grape vines. Deserving recognition has recently been served to many wineries in this state. At the 2010 Northwest Wine Summit Competition Idaho wineries competed against over 1,100 wines from areas including Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Altogether Idaho wineries held an outstanding place in the competition by receiving 9 Gold Medals, 17 Silver Medals and 20 Bronze Medals for a total of 47 medals.

The Idaho Wine Commission hosted another successful Savor Idaho: Idaho’s Premier Wine and Food Event on June 13, 2010. The beautiful scenery at the Botanical Gardens was one of the many attractions for consumers. The event included 30 Idaho wineries, 22 restaurants, 5 exhibitors and 17 sponsors. The environment was full of excitement for beginning wine drinkers as well as experts. Guests could sample a new item at each station. Around 900 consumers sipped great wine and indulged in delicious local food. With this tremendous success you can bet that many are saving the date for Savor Idaho 2011 on June 12th. With the boutique hotels and great restaurants in downtown Boise, the Idaho wine industry is on the rise having all the perfect elements for a great weekend getaway. other tournament record – this time for lowest 54-hole score of 195. And while he remained the outright leader by 2 strokes, things began to get crowded at the top. Guthrie, despite three-putting the par-5 16th hole and missing a 7-footer for birdie at 17, shot a 62 – the tournament’s fifth – to finish in a 5-way tie for second, only two strokes back of Putnam. Included in that tie was the Web.com Tour’s leading money winner Casey Wittenberg, already a two-time champion on the tour this year. And for Putnam, even more ominous is the fact that of the five players who held the previous record for lowest 54-hole score, none went on to win the tournament. Thus, Sunday’s final-round table was set. Playing in the final group, Guthrie jumped out to his great start of par-bird-

of Jeff Sanders Promotions, it takes a community - no, make that communities - to stage a web.com Tour event like the 23rd Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft. In fact, it takes over a thousand volunteers from 30 communities to make it happen. It takes a great golf course like Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, Idaho. It

ie-eagle while Putnam went bogey-birdie-par, and suddenly Guthrie was out in front by a stroke. He turned the front nine with a two-stroke lead, and birdied the par-4 tenth to go up by three. From there, he secured pars on the difficult stretch of holes 11 through 14, then – after driving into a greenside bunker on the short par-4 15th, he blasted out to within a few feet and calmly sank the birdie putt. He managed a twoputt birdie on the 16th, the same par 5 he three-putted the day before, to go to 22-under for the tournament and a four stroke lead, effectively slamming the door on anybody else’s chance to win. From there, he calmly parred 17 and 18, securing the record and the title. Along with the winner’s check for $130,500 and the crystal trophy, Guthrie also bettered his web.com Tour position from No. 22 on the money list to No. 4 which - with only 6 events left on the Tour’s calendar for this year - also takes thousands of hours. And it takes an area like the Treasure Valley in Idaho to support it for 23 years … and counting. The web.com Tour and its tournaments are committed to supporting charities in the communities in which the events are played. The three Tours of the PGA TOUR and their tournaments have reached the $1 billion milestone in charitable giving dating back to the first recorded donation in 1938. RH

guaranteed himself a place on the PGA TOUR for 2013. In his six web.com Tour events since turning pro, Guthrie now has a championship to go with a 2nd place finish, a T3, a T6, and a T10, along with a T5 in the PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic two weeks before he debuted on the web.com Tour. Not bad for a young man who is also still finishing up his studies at the University of Illinois, where he is just 13 credit hours short of his business degree.

Guthrie taps in on 18th hole to win the 23rd Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft.

As always, the biggest winner is the charities the tournament helps support. This year’s total was $1.25 million. NOTE: The very next week, in the web. com Tour’s WNB Golf Classic in Midland, TX, Guthrie rode his hot streak to a 1-stroke victory, catapulting him all the way to No. 1 on the tour with only 5 events left. Capture that College Town Spirit!

H

ome of Washington State University and the National Lentil Festival, Pullman Washington is a wonderful community in which to spend time. Pullman lies in the heart of an area known as The Palouse, made famous by its gently rolling, dunelike hills of some of the most fertile soil in the country. The climate is perfect for growing crops of wheat, barley, peas and lentils. Endless undulating fields make this a favorite stop for photographers. Whether a quaint, round barn nestled in a beautiful valley or ever expanding horizons as seen from the top a butte, this unusual geography changes season to season, minute by minute. Fall is a favorite time to capture amber harvest

hues and the geometric patterns left by the combines. A visit to WSU is brimming with arts and culture. Be sure and stop by Ferdi-

nand’s Dairy Bar. Here you can watch cheese and ice cream being made and sample some of their delicious prod-

ucts. Be sure to take home some award winning Cougar Gold Cheese! Check out the Grizzly Bear Research Center, the only one of its’ kind in the country and see wildlife up close. Take in some PAC 12 Athletics and catch the Cougs in action. Fall in Pullman means football! Biking on the Palouse could mean mountain biking or touring the 26 miles of paved trails in and around Pullman, including the Downtown Riverwalk. And if that isn’t enough, hit the golf course and finish out your day tasting locally made wine and beer. Pullman boasts two local wineries and two local breweries. Great accommodations, restaurants, galleries and lovely shops round out your visit. e

n the pristine Platte Valley, you will find areas where you can hike without crowds, hear creeks rushing by, smell the scent of evergreens, or listen to aspens sway in the wind. Want more? Immerse yourself in the free hot pool, where legend has it that these waters were enjoyed by ancient Indian tribes. Winding through the town of Saratoga is the Upper North Platte River. The Encampment River flows through Riverside and feeds into the Platte River. These rivers boast some of the best Blue Ribbon trout fishing anywhere. Travel the boardwalk at the Storer-

Saratoga Lake Wetland Project, nesting habitat to many bird species and adjacent to the popular Saratoga Lake. While in the area, you can tour the National Fish Hatchery. The Town of Encampment has a rich mining history, and at the Grand Encampment Museum, you can relive the past through colorful exhibits and authentic cabins. Displays and dioramas at the Saratoga Museum also illustrate times gone by, offering interpretive presentations as well as a beautiful outdoor pavilion. Shopping the Valley is a unique opportunity with specialty shops to fill every

need. Whether looking for something special for you, your family or your horse, you’ll find it here. The breathtaking Sierra Madre and Snowy Range Mountains majestically surround the Valley. Ideal for hiking, camping and wildlife gazing in the summer, these mountains are also perfectly suited for wintertime cross country skiers and snowmobilers with over 300 miles of groomed trails.
