National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Preserving, sharing and honoring the mining story.

ire in the hole! This classic warning from powder-monkeys, miners who set explosives, still rings out in the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum today. Begin your self-guided tour by walking up the stairs to the renovated 1899 high school building. You will be greeted by a friendly admissions assistant. View a model of the railroad located in Leadville, Colorado during the mining days. Walk through the Hard Rock Mine, a reconstruction of a blacksmith’s shop and mine complete with authentic sounds. Exit into the Gold Rush room, where you can find fascinating information about gold rushes in your state, and a 24-oz. gold nugget! The museum contains five levels of shining crystals, mining history, photographs, and mining equipment. Three mine reconstructions, a full-size molybdenum car, and a Gift Gallery featuring books, gold panning kits, onyx chess sets, and jewelry mean there is something for everyone to see in the National Mining Museum. Hold your meeting or wedding reception in one of the spacious Convention Center meeting rooms or

ballroom. From May through September, visit the Matchless Mine, a famous silver mine purchased by Horace Tabor in the 1879, and the cabin where Baby Doe Tabor lived for 35 years in her con-

tinual search for more silver. Since its incorporation in 1977, and following its national charter signed by President Reagan in 1988, the National Mining Museum has often been the location of the Induction Banquet, held annually to install people instrumental to the development of the mining indus-

try into the Hall of Fame. The Matchless Summer Series is a round of costumed interpreters, knowledgeable lecturers, and exciting tours that engage people with Leadville and mining. Leadville is also home to Boom Days, a rip-roaring adventure that recreates the excitement of the Wild West. The National Mining Museum is located at 120 W. 9th Street in Leadville, Colorado. It is within walking distance of restaurants, antique shops, and historical points of interest. In the summer, hiking and mountain biking are available for outdoors adventurers, and in the winter, ice skating and sledding. Leadville is also a short drive away from ski resorts like Copper Mountain, Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge. The Museum is open year round, 9-5 summer hours, and 11-6 winter hours. The Museum At Warm Springs “Feel the Spirit”

T

he award-winning Museum At Warm Springs was created to preserve the history and traditions of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon. The Museum is arranged to resemble a traditional encampment among the cottonwoods along Shitike Creek in the Deschutes River Canyon. The Museum is intended to be a place in harmony with the natural environment. Our newest feature is the Twanat Trail. The Trail meanders along Shitike Creek and features exquisite views and educational kiosks that relate the natural history and tell about the animals, fish, birds, and plants of the Museum’s site. Visitors can picnic near the towering cottonwoods and wild roses along the Trail....and children can run and play on our wide west field. The Museum itself is built of natural materials that reflect the surroundings and traditions of the Tribes. Native stone, heavy timber and brick are all finely detailed to demonstrate the integration of art into everyday life. Meaningful symbols that are used by the Tribes, such as the drum, dance costume bustles and patterns from Klickitat baskets are also integrated as art form in the building design. Summer weekends at The Museum visitors can meet Warm Springs master artists who demonstrate their arts and crafts. This year’s summer exhibit is “Warm Springs Beaded Tapestries” and runs from June 21 to September 16. This beautiful exhibit features beaded clothing, dance regalia, and accessories such as beaded bags and jewelry from The Museum’s Collections. August 11 is the date of The Museum’s 17th Annual Huckleberry Harvest dinner and auction. Funds raised support The Museum’s mission to preserve, advance, and share the knowledge of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. October is members’ appreciation month at The Museum. T

he evening of July 19,1805, was a hot one in the wilderness that would later become Montana. On the Missouri River, not far from present day Helena, the hardy members of the Lewis and Clark expedition toiled to move upstream. Rock embankments made towing from shore impossible, and the deep channel forced the men to row rather than pole their boats forward. Suddenly, there loomed before them towering rock formations unlike any they had ever seen. From both sides of the river, limestone cliffs rose to a spectacular height of 1200 feet. “In many places,” wrote Meriwether Lewis, “the rocks seem ready to tumble on us.” At each bend in the waterway, great stone walls seemed to block passage, only to open like gentle giant gates as the expedition drew near. In his journal, Meriwether wrote: “I

shall call this place: “GATES OF THE MOUNTAINS”. The name stuck, and for nearly two centuries travelers have ventured down this stretch of the Missouri to marvel at its natural wonders. Today, most visitors enjoy the beauty of the Gates of the Mountains from aboard one of three tour boats – the”Pirogue” (named after the boats used by the Expedition, pictured above), the “Sacajawea” (named after the only women and indigenous person on the Expedition), and the “Hilger Rose” (named after Nicholas Hilger, who began the tours in 1886 on a vessel named “Rose of Helena”). The 105-minute cruise starts at our marina, just 3 miles off Interstate 15 in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains between Helena and Great Falls, Montana. Aboard a comfortable openair boat (covered in case of rain), you’ll glide through magnificent country Meriwether Lewis would still recognize if he could return. Great towering walls of limestone still stand guard over the river. Bighorn sheep and Mountain Goats scamper in the rocks high above the water. Ospreys, eagles (bald and golden), vultures and falcons (peregrine and prairie) still soar on the updrafts. The canyon is also home to otters, deer, squirrels, ermine, beaver, mountain lions, black bears and other wild creatures. The life list for bird species is

over 120 right now. At Meriwether Picnic Area, the boat stops for 15 minutes of leg stretching. If you like, you may temporarily abandon the tour here and complete the trip on a later boat. You can bring a picnic and the whole family will enjoy a day out next to the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness Area and the Missouri River. Swimming, fishing, and hiking can be engaged in. From the picnic area you can hike to Mann Gulch, the site of the raging forest fire that killed 13 smokejumpers 50 years ago. There will be a special gathering for the 50th anniversary this summer around August 5, 1999. This tragedy was the main subject matter of Norman Maclean’s book “Young Men and Fire”. The story of Mann gulch is one of the more interesting stories told by the guide and pilot. Between Meriwether Picnic and Mann Gulch the pilot will hug the shoreline to give you a look at Indian pictographs painted on the rock wall. Proof that indigenous people lived here long before Meriwether named it the Gates of the Mountains. The tour’s main attraction, though, is the inexhaustible scenery – wooded slopes, rugged rock formations, and the placid beauty of the timeless Missouri. Hidden Wine Industry Emerging into its Own

I

daho’s famous potatoes have had to start sharing the limelight with another great agricultural product: grapes. Tucked between the Rocky Mountains and the Snake River lies a perfect climate for growing grapes and creating extraordinary award-winning wines. The climate is moderate with limited precipitation, and a consistent growing season adds complexity and uniqueness to the grapes. Idaho grows and produces vinifera wine grape varieties such as Syrah and Viognier, as well as classic varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling. Officially designated in April 2007, the Snake River Valley Appellation is the first registered AVA (American Viticulture Area) for the state. The 8,263 square miles of AVA stretch east to Twin Falls, west to Oregon, and houses 12 Idaho counties in-between. Vintners,

viticulturists, soil experts and geologists insist that Idaho’s high desert terrain (volcanic soil, hot days and cool nights) create the perfect environment to grow grape vines. Idaho has more than doubled the number of wineries in the last 10 years to over 50! In addition, the state has added acreage, now boasting 56 vineyards and 1,600 acres planted. In the past 12 months alone there were four new wineries added in Idaho. The Idaho Wine Commission created a new event, “UnWined at the Movies,” that will be held on March 27, 2013 from 5-9pm at the Egyptian Theater in downtown Boise. Nine Idaho wineries will be present, each with a variety of wines to try. In addition, 3 Girls Catering will be providing food to complement the wines. The feature film, Bottle Shock, is the award-winning story of the early days of California wine making.

The film begins at 6:30pm and patrons are able to refresh their glasses throughout the movie. In June of 2012, the Idaho Wine Commission hosted another successful Savor Idaho: Idaho’s Premier Wine & Food Event. In addition to the beautiful scenery at the Idaho Botanical Garden, the event included 27 Idaho wineries, 17 restaurants, nine exhibitors and 18 sponsors. Guests could sample a new item at each station, and both beginners and expert wine drinkers had a fantastic time. Around 900 consumers sipped great wine and indulged in delicious local food. With this tremendous success you can bet that many are saving the date for Savor Idaho 2013 on June 9th. Coffeyville, Kansas Aviation Heritage Museum Coffeyville's Aviation Heritage Museum is dedicated to early aviation and pioneer pilots of the area, the Aviation Heritage Museum features memorabilia from the Coffeyville Air Base, a Funk airplane and Breezy, owned by Joe Funk and donated to the museum, plus many other displays. Located in Pfister Park, the Aviation Heritage Museum is housed in a 1930's era hangar that was used when the Big Hill Airport was in operation from 1933 to 1960. The airport hangar was constructed in 1933 as a Works Progress Administration project.

Dalton Defenders Museum The Museum, owned and operated by the non-profit Coffeyville Historical Society, is the realization of a dream of many Coffeyville citizens who understood the importance of collecting items not only relating to the Dalton Raid but also relating to early-day life in this area. In the Museum, which is just east of the Plaza area, are collections of the following: • Mementos of early-day Coffeyville. • Mementos of Wendell Willkie– who lived and taught school in Coffeyville. • Mementos of Walter Johnson—who lived in Coffeyville during the off-season. • Mementos of the Dalton Raid (including recently located court records of Emmett’s trial). Midland Theater Built in the 1928, the historic Midland Theater, along with the Alamo building to the west, is currently undergoing restoration. The mission of the Midland Restoration Project is to preserve and restore the Midland Theater and the Alamo Building as a multipurpose

facility to accommodate public performances, events and activities. The complex will also provide a focal point for further economic development in and revitalization of the downtown core of Coffeyville. Perkins Building The Perkins Building, AKA The Condon Bank, is one of two banks that the infamous Dalton Gang attempted to rob in 1892. The Perkins Building is the most recognizable building in Coffeyville. It was built in 1890 and became home of the Condon Bank, plus other offices and retail stores. Luther Perkins used the design of a similar structure built in Time Square in New York. The “Flat Iron Building” design referred to its unusual shape and the use of metal on the fascia of the building. Its unique wedge shape, which conformed to the tapering of the plaza block, and its placement at the junction of three streets with a vista in five directions, made it a focal point of town. ounded in 1909, the community of Powell is twenty miles south of the Wyoming-Montana border in the heart of the Big Horn Basin, our rural town of about 6,000 celebrated its 100th birthday in 2009. Beginning in 1904, the Shoshone Reclamation Project, brought an influx of hopeful homesteaders to the Basin. Originally named Camp Coulter, Powell became a center for business in the region. Just a few miles north is the Elk Basin Oil Field, also one of the oldest in the state. Agriculture and the oil industry provide many of the area jobs. In addition, Powell Valley Healthcare, Park County School District #1, Northwest College, and a wide variety of down-

town businesses keep the unemployment rate below the national average. Powell has three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. There are recreational opportunities for all-an 18-hole community golf course, six tennis courts, an aquatic center, soccer fields, baseball fields, and softball fields. Paved pedestrian trails, bicycle routes, and thirteen parks are also available for all to enjoy.
