Bisbee, Arizona – Queen Mine Tours

I

n 1877 a reconnaissance detail of army scouts and cavalrymen was sent to the Mule Mountains to search the area for renegade Apaches. What civilian tracker Jack Dunn found instead were signs of mineralization indicating the presence of lead, copper and possibly silver. The first mining claim was staked in what would later become the City of Bisbee. The filing of this claim, and a multitude of others filed by George Warren, sent prospectors and speculators scurrying to the Mule Mountains in hopes of striking it rich. Numerous rich ore bodies were located and Bisbee soon became known as the "Queen of the Copper Camps"

During almost a century of mining, 8 billion pounds of copper, 102 million ounces of silver and 2.8 million ounces of gold along with millions of pounds of zinc, lead and manganese were produced. By 1974 ore reserves had been depleted and December brought the announcement of the impending closure of mining operations in Bisbee. Phelps Dodge curtailed open pit operations that year and ceased underground operations in 1975. It appeared as though the queen was about to be laid to rest. With the departure of its industrial base, the real estate market in Bisbee collapsed as hundreds of homes went up

for sale. The availability of cheap real estate drew retirees, "hippies" and eventually a new group of speculators. These new residents purchased property and slowly began to contribute to the renovation of the city. The Bisbee of today is a well-known artist's community whose architectural and historic heritage has been preserved. Located at the center of the natural and historic beauty of Cochise County, the city has transformed itself into the ideal spot for tourism. These benefits combined with "the most perfect year round climate" make it an attractive place to visit and a great place to call home. RH

Buffalo Bill Center of the West

T

here’s a big celebration going on at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West* in Cody, Wyoming—a celebration of the Spirit of the American West! Whether you have a couple of hours, or a day or two, a visit to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West is guaranteed to be the biggest and best part of your trip out West. It takes a museum as big as the Buffalo Bill Museum to recount the tales of the legendary showman William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody and the West he loved.

And that’s just the beginning. It takes a gallery as big as the Whitney Gallery of Western Art to capture the masterworks of artists who chronicled the action-packed sights and sounds of the American West. It takes a place as big as the Plains Indian Museum to present the history of the Northern Plains tribes where native voices and beautiful objects tell the stories of Plains Indian peoples. Whether cowboy or trapper, settler or Native American—the story of the American West is incomplete without the firearm. Housing the most com-

prehensive collection of American firearms in the world, it takes a space as big as the Cody Firearms Museum to tell that story.

And, it takes a setting as big as the Draper Museum of Natural History to portray the nature and science of the Yellowstone area. Here, visitors become explorers—even coming faceto-face with the live birds of prey of the Greater Yellowstone Raptor Experience. Celebrating the Spirit of the American West in a big way is what we do every day at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.* Our entire facility—plus research library, store, and eatery— are all in one location for one admission price. Block out an hour or a day to celebrate with us! Great Plains Sampler

Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Chadron, NE

A

uthoress and Nebraska native Mari Sandoz may be one of the most rough-and-tumble chroniclers of West during the mid-20th century. She was born on ranch on “the Flats” of the northwest Nebraska to an abused mail-order bride and her Swiss-aristocrat husband. The eldest of six children, Mari (born Marie), was responsible for the raising of her brothers and sisters, in addition to working on the family ranch. Her father, known as Old Jules - even when he was a young man, was notorious for his cruelty towards his family, his land, and his animals. Mari’s only means of escape was through writing. Her first short story was published at age 11 in a state newspaper. From then on, Mari knew that she was supposed to be a writer. Sandoz was a passionate, life-long advocate for Native American rights. As a child, the Lakota would camp on the Sandoz family’s property and Mari played with the children who came to visit. She had knowledge of the Native Americans, primarily the Lakota, which even authors of her day could only dream of having. That intimate

knowledge came through her work, specifically her book “Crazy Horse.” The Center houses Sandoz’s papers and personal items. These materials are on display in Center’s permanent exhibit gallery. The Coffee Gallery, located on the lower level of the Center, tells the history of the cattle ranching industry for the High Plains Region. An art gallery is located on the first floor of the Center hosts several different shows throughout the year. Concerts, speakers and other presentations are held

in the Center’s Chicoine Atrium. The Heritage Gardens project has received national attention for its concept and implementation of design showing plants in thematic plantings, such as Lakota medicinal plants. The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is located on the campus of Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska. For more information, please call 308-432-6401, visit us on the web at www.csc.edu/sandoz, or follow us on Facebook at Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. RH

Math’s Alive At the Strategic Air & Space Museum MathAlive! Is opening September 21, 2013 at the Strategic Air & Space Museum in Ashland, Neb. This one of the most interactive and inspiring exhibitions exploring the world of mathematics ever to tour. MathAlive! is designed to inspire, to spark the imagination and to reveal not only math at work, but also the endless possibilities of math. Primarily designed for kids in grades 3-8, the exhibition brings to life the real math behind what kids love most – video games, sports, design, music, robotics and more – and creates interactive and immersive experiences that bring to life the math at work in each, whether in design, application or use. In this 5,000-square-foot exhibition, visitors will ride snowboards in a 3-D experience, design (and play) their own video games, capture their 360-degree images in a unique interactive, jump into a binary dance party, even design a custom skateboard for “pop” – the quick, snapping motion that allows a board to do the best tricks. Through nearly 40 unique, interactive experiences, the exhibit takes math from its native form into the applied worlds of design, engineering, technology and science. Strategic Air & Space Museum guests will explore and operate simulations of NASA’s latest robotics, including the Robonaut 2 and Curiosity rover. Around a large-scale futuristic bridge they learn how engineers work to make a city hum while taking on different engineering roles to design a more sustainable infrastructure. The exhibition is designed to help answer the age-old question: “Will I ever use all this math they’re teaching us?” Guests are accompanied by fun and quirky virtual guides. Along the way they’ll meet and hear professionals, visionaries and inspiring personalities talk about math in their work across fields kids are most interested in exploring. The exhibit addresses all math strands and subjects for upper elementary and middle school, and neatly aligns with standards for educator planning. “This innovative exhibit responds to the national movement toward greater focus on STEM development and www.ritzhospitalitymag.com

STEM career awareness,” said Scott Tarry, President & CEO of the Strategic Air & Space Museum. “By engaging kids in fun, math-based activities, the content can inspire students to make math a priority, reaching them in that window of vulnerability when math

gets more challenging and kids begin to lose interest. I’m confident that the exhibit and related hands-on activities developed will ignite the thrill of innovation and discovery for all those who visit the museum. I know people will be

impressed and learn something new as they interact with math coming to life right in front of them.” The Strategic Air & Space Museum located between Lincoln and Omaha near Interstate 80, utilizes over 300,000 square feet of exhibit, education, and event space to ignite the thrill of discovery and innovation in guests of all ages. Organized in 1959, the original mission of the museum was to commemorate the contributions of the Strategic Air Command, which until 1992 was headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base. The museum moved to its current location in 1998 upon completion of a new indoor facility. The museum houses an impressive collection of military aircraft and space artifacts, many of which have been restored in the museum’s on-site restoration facility. To better serve the community, the museum has recently established a partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities for students, teachers, families, and adult learners. Traveling exhibits, permanent exhibits, and a variety of special events provide additional unique experiences for the museum’s members and guests. RH

Windmill Inns & Suites’ Top-Notch Services, Unique Amenities Generate Rave Reviews from Guests

Y

ou know you’re doing something right when guests say their only disappointment is not finding your hotels everywhere they travel.

The Scottsdale-based group of two in— Chandler, and Tucson, Ariz.—is earning rave reviews from guests who have experienced Windmill Inns & Suites’ spotless guestrooms and public areas, top-notch ser-

vice and highly affordable rates. Guest satisfaction is so high that many patrons take the time to not only fill out comment cards, but to write glowingly of their experience. “Our hallmark has always been great rates; sincere, friendly service; and roomy, clean accommodations,” said Windmill Inns & Suites President and C.E.O John Cauvin, a 30-year hotel veteran. “It’s incredibly satisfying to have people tell us personally, in the lobby or at the front desk, that they’ve enjoyed their stay,” Cauvin said. “But when they take the time to write to us about how much they enjoyed the experience... well, that’s very special and meaningful to us. It tells us that all the hard work we put into delivering great service, clean accommodations and desired amenities—all at affordable rates—is being rewarded.” At Windmill Inns & Suites, those amenities include free Continental breakfast, free local calls (and free access to long-distance calls), free daily newspapers for each guest, and free parking. Cauvin points out

that some of these amenities are also offered at other hotels, so he’s implemented an amenity program that goes above and beyond the typical hotel offerings. For example, both Windmill Inns & Suites allow pets to stay—for free; all make bicycles available for free; all make available free lending libraries and free games for children; and all offer highspeed Internet access—for free—as well as access to free help-desk assistance, should the need arise, via a toll-free phone number. And there’s even a bonus included in the free Continental breakfast—guests can even make their own waffles! “We’ve always tried to do things that set us apart from our competitors and provide more satisfaction for our guests,” Cauvin said. “That’s been our philosophy for more than 20 years, and we’ve instilled it in our staff culture and emphasized it in our ongoing staff-training programs. Devil’s Tower

C

olonel Dodge was said to be credited for giving Devil’s Tower its name, as he said that the Indians call it “The Bad God’s Tower”, hence calling it Devil’s Tower. Rising over 1200 feet into the Wyoming sky, Devil’s Tower is located 29 miles northwest of Sundance, WY. There are several different theories on how exactly Devil’s Tower was formed. Some say it is an extinct volcano, although no evidence of volcanic activity in the area. The Tower is approximately 60 million years old and is slowly eroding. The area of Devil’s Tower National Monument is a sacred place for Indians. The tribes who hold this massive formation sacred all have different legends on the Tower. Many of them involve young children playing around the area of the Tower (before it was a tower). A bear sees them and chases them when the girls climb onto a large rock. They pray to the Great Spirit to help them,

www.ritzhospitalitymag.com

and the rock slowly starts getting larger and larger. The columns that you see on the side of the tower are made from the bear’s claws as he was trying to reach the girls while the rock was growing. Another myth about Devil’s Tower is that many years ago, three Indians were hunting near the tower. They discovered a tunnel under the Tower and they proceeded to explore. What they found was a lake, which was surrounded by mounds of gold. They had no way to transport the gold so they hid the entrance and made plans to return. They never did. Nobody has ever found a passageway underneath the Tower, but the Black Hills area is known for their many caves. Climbing Devil’s Tower is also a very popular activity. More than 4,000 climbers visit the Tower each year. The first person to reach the summit of Devil’s Tower was a local rancher named William Rogers on July 4, 1893. With

help from Willard Ripley, they made a 350-foot ladder, securing it into a vertical crack up the mountain. Exactly 2 years later, William Rogers’ wife duplicated his climb to be recorded as the first woman to reach the summit. Some parts of that ladder are still visible. If you’re planning on climbing the Tower, make sure you have a solid plan on your decent! On Oct 1, 1941, professional parachutist George Hopkins parachuted to the top of the Tower, but the rope he was planning on using for his decent landed on the side of the mountain, out of Hopkins’ reach. He spent 6 days on the top of the Mountain as airplanes dropped blankets and food to him. Finally, a group of professional mountain climbers rescued him. If you’re not into climbing the Tower, there are trails to go exploring on, and they range from easy to difficult. Also, make sure you keep your eyes out for all the wildlife in the area of Devil’s Tower. RH

Coffeyville, Kansas Aviation Heritage Museum Coffeyville's Aviation Heritage Museum is dedicated to early aviation and pioneer pilots of the area, the Aviation Heritage Museum features memorabilia from the Coffeyville Air Base, a Funk airplane and Breezy, owned by Joe Funk and donated to the museum, plus many other displays. Located in Pfister Park, the Aviation Heritage Museum is housed in a 1930's era hangar that was used when the Big Hill Airport was in operation from 1933 to 1960. The airport hangar was constructed in 1933 as a Works Progress Administration project. Dalton Defenders Museum The Museum, owned and operated by the non-profit Coffeyville Historical Society, is the realization of a dream of many Coffeyville citizens who understood the importance of collecting items not only relating to the Dalton Raid but also relating to early-day life in this area. In the Museum, which is just east of the Plaza area, are collections of the following: • Mementos of early-day Coffeyville. • Mementos of Wendell Willkie– who lived and taught school in Coffeyville. • Mementos of Walter Johnson—who lived in Coffeyville during the off-season.

• Mementos of the Dalton Raid (including recently located court records of Emmett’s trial). Midland Theater Built in the 1928, the historic Midland Theater, along with the Alamo building to the west, is currently undergoing restoration. The mission of the Midland Restoration Project is to preserve and restore the Midland Theater and the Alamo Building as a multipurpose facility to accommodate public performances, events and activities. The complex will also provide a focal point for further economic development in and revitalization of the downtown core of Coffeyville. Perkins Building The Perkins Building, AKA The Condon Bank, is one of two banks that the infamous Dalton Gang attempted to rob in 1892. The Perkins Building is the most recognizable building in Coffeyville. It was built in 1890 and became home of the Condon Bank, plus other offices and retail stores. Luther Perkins used the design of a similar structure built in Time Square in New York. The “Flat Iron Building” design referred to its unusual shape and the use of metal on the fascia of the building. Its unique wedge shape, which conformed to the tapering of the plaza block, and its

placement at the junction of three streets with a vista in five directions, made it a focal point of town. For information contact the Coffeyville Area Chamber of Commerce (800) 6263357, www.visitcoffeyville.com RH
