Veterans Memorial Museum–Chehalis, WA Civil War Siege of Petersburg n the July weekend of the 12th – 13th we will continue our recognition of the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. We will be having another large battle and encampment not far from the Museum. These are really exciting events as we watch the battle unfold, learn about life in the 1860’s from the living historians and learn about the featured battle. This year’s battle will focus on the Siege of Petersburg. This battle began in June of 1864 and featured a unique event where the Union forces dug a mine underneath the Confederate trenches to break the siege. The mine was filled with explosives and detonated on July 30th. A military debacle ensued when the Union troops ran headlong into the massive crater rather than going around it. For hours Confederate troops launched a counterattack that resulted in a “turkey shoot� as the Union troops could not climb out of the crater. For this year’s event we are working with the engineers to re-create the crater event. It will be a big BOOM! You won’t want to miss this Civil War Battle! Vietnam Traveling Wall To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of the Vietnam War, the Veterans Memorial Museum will host “The American Veterans Traveling Tribute�, commonly referred to as the Vietnam Traveling Wall, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2014. The Traveling Wall that will visit is the largest of the 5 around the country, 360’ long and 80% of the size of the real Wall. Six special programs will be held while The Wall is at the Veterans Memorial Museum. Thursday – Laying of the Wreaths: 6:00 PM Friday: Opening Ceremonies, 6:00 PM, Travis Wofford speaker Saturday: Vietnam Remembrance Day, 11:00 AM, John Plaster speaker Saturday: POW/MIA Remembrance Day, 4:00 PM Sunday: Early Morning Community Church Service, 8:00 AM, Chaplain Stan Baker, speaker Sunday: Closing Ceremonies, 2:00 PM, Ron Averill, speaker The theme of the program is “To Heal and Honor�. Many veterans returning from war bury emotions deep inside their mind and heart and do not learn how to reconcile with them until 20 to 50 years later. Unfortunately some never are able to come to grips with these emotions. One of the major goals of the Veterans Memorial Museum is to sponsor events such as this to help the HEALING process begin. All of the museum’s programs are intended to HONOR those who serve or have served our country. The freedom our citizens and our County currently have is a direct result of the millions of American servicemen and women who have served their country in peace and war! Secondly with the Traveling Wall at the museum we will also HONOR those who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. RH

The Museum At Warm Springs “Feel the Spirit�

T

he award-winning Museum At Warm Springs was created to preserve the history and traditions of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon. The Museum is arranged to resemble a traditional encampment among the cottonwoods along Shitike Creek in the Deschutes River Canyon. The Museum is intended to be a place in harmony with the natural environment. Our newest feature is the Twanat Trail. The Trail meanders along Shitike Creek and features exquisite views and educational kiosks that relate the natural history and tell about the animals, fish, birds, and plants of the Museum’s site. Visitors can picnic near the towering cottonwoods and wild roses along the Trail....and children can run and play on our wide west field. The Museum itself is built of natural materials that reflect the surroundings and traditions of the Tribes. Native stone, heavy timber and brick are all finely detailed to demonstrate the integration of art into everyday life. Meaningful symbols that are used by the Tribes, such as the drum, dance costume bustles and patterns from Klickitat baskets are also integrated as art form in the building design. Summer weekends at The Museum Visitors can meet Warm Springs master artists who demonstrate their arts and crafts. This year’s summer exhibit is “Warm Springs Beaded Tapestries�

and runs from June 21 to September 16. This beautiful exhibit features beaded clothing, dance regalia, and accessories such as beaded bags and jewelry from The Museum’s Collections. August 11 is the date of The Museum’s 17th Annual Huckleberry Harvest dinner and auction. Funds raised support The Museum’s mission to preserve, advance, and share the knowledge of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. October is members’ appreciation month at The Museum. American heritage marketplace with local artisans selling their authentic jewelry, handicrafts, and weavings. Math’s Alive At the Strategic Air & Space Museum MathAlive! Opened September 21, 2013 at the Strategic Air & Space Museum in Ashland, Neb. This one of the most interactive and inspiring exhibitions exploring the world of mathematics ever to tour. MathAlive! is designed to inspire, to spark the imagination and to reveal not only math at work, but also the endless possibilities of math. Primarily designed for kids in grades 3-8, the exhibition brings to life the real math behind what kids love most – video games, sports, design, music, robotics and more – and creates interactive and immersive experiences that bring to life the math at work in each, whether in design, application or use. In this 5,000-square-foot exhibition, visitors will ride snowboards in a 3-D experience, design (and play) their own video games, capture their 360-degree images in a unique interactive, jump into a binary dance party, even design a custom skateboard for “pop” – the quick, snapping motion that allows a board to do the best tricks. Through nearly 40 unique, interactive experiences, the exhibit takes math from its native form into the applied worlds of design, engineering, technology and science. Strategic Air & Space Museum guests will explore and operate simulations of NASA’s latest robotics, including

the Robonaut 2 and Curiosity rover. Around a large-scale futuristic bridge they learn how engineers work to make a city hum while taking on different engineering roles to design a more sustainable infrastructure.

The exhibition is designed to help answer the age-old question: “Will I ever use all this math they’re teaching us?” Guests are accompanied by fun and quirky virtual guides. Along the way they’ll meet and hear professionals, visionaries and inspiring personalities talk

about math in their work across fields kids are most interested in exploring. The exhibit addresses all math strands and subjects for upper elementary and middle school, and neatly aligns with standards for educator planning. “This innovative exhibit responds to the national movement toward greater focus on STEM development and STEM career awareness,” said Scott Tarry, President & CEO of the Strategic Air & Space Museum. “By engaging kids in fun, math-based activities, the content can inspire students to make math a priority, reaching them in that window of vulnerability when math gets more challenging and kids begin to lose interest. I’m confident that the exhibit and related hands-on activities developed will ignite the thrill of innovation and discovery for all those who visit the museum. I know people will be impressed and learn something new as they interact with math coming to life right in front of them.” The Strategic Air & Space Museum located between Lincoln and Omaha near Interstate 80, utilizes over 300,000 square feet of exhibit, education, and event space to ignite the thrill of discovery and innovation in guests of all ages. Organized in 1959, the original mission of the museum was to commemorate the contributions of the Strategic Air Command, which until 1992 was headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base. The museum moved to its current location in 1998 upon completion of a new indoor facility. The museum houses an impressive collection of military aircraft and space artifacts, many of which have been restored in the museum’s on-site restoration facility. To better serve the community, the museum has recently established a partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities for students, teachers, families, and adult learners. Kansas Cosmosphere And Space Center

F

ounded in 1962, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center started out as the Hutchinson Planetarium. It now consists of 105,000 square feet dedicated to space science exhibits and educational programs, including a planetarium, an IMAXÂŽ Dome Theater and the internationally recognized Hall of Space Museum.

The Cosmosphere houses the most significant collection of U.S. space artifacts outside of the National Air and Space Museum, and the largest collection of Soviet space artifacts in the Western world, The Cosmosphere tells the story of the Space Race in a way that no other museum can. The Cosmosphere’s collection includes one-of-a-kind artifacts

such as the Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, the space capsule Gemini X, the SR-71 Blackbird #961, and rare V-1 and V-2 rockets. It also has on display a complete set of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spacecraft juxtaposed with a complete set of Russian Vostok, Voskhod and Soyuz spacecraft. It is also the permanent home of the Mercury capsule, Liberty Bell 7, which the Cosmosphere and Discovery Channel recovered from the ocean floor. Approximately 150,000 visitors visit the Cosmosphere yearly from every state and dozens of foreign countries. Named one of the first affiliates of the Smithsonian Institution in 1998, students visit the facility every year as part of school field trips. For more than 25 years, students have attended nationally recognized camps at the cosmosphere. Camps are designed for students as young as those going into the second grade through high school age. The Cosmosphere also offers camps for adults, scouts, and custom camps tailored to any group. Named an official project of Save America’s Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the White House, the Cosmosphere is known worldwide for its space artifact restoration program including the complete restoration of Apollo 13 and Liberty Bell 7. When Liberty Bell 7 completed its nationwide tour late in 2005 and returned for permanent display at the space museum, the Cosmosphere became one of only three locations in the world to have flown Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo spacecrafts. Fargo-Moorhead is the home of Bonanzaville, USA, a recreated frontier town and museum that allows visitors to experience a small community of the late 19th century. Nowhere but in Fargo-Moorhead will you find a museum dedicated to baseball great Roger Maris, a Fargo native. Fargo-Moorhead is also home to the Plains Art Museum, the Rourke Art Museum and the Fargo Air Museum, that specializes in flyable war planes. Visit The Most Notorious Bars In Texas

untsville is home to the finest prison bars in Texas and the first gated community since 1849. The idea for the museum budded in the mid-1980’s by community volunteers and administrators of the Texas Department of Corrections who began collecting and preserving artifacts scattered throughout the vast prison system. Some of the artifacts were displayed in the Criminal Justice Center of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. The growing interest in the prison collections led to the opening of the Texas Prison Museum in 1989 - located in a small, leased building on the downtown square. While the most prominent artifacts on display were loaned by the prison system, additional items were loaned by individuals. As it grew in

popularity, the museum board and the prison system shared a vision to build a new home by Interstate 45. In 2002,

the Prison Museum opened its new 6,000 square foot facility. The new museum grounds is also the home of the Sesquicentennial Plaza, dedicated in 1998 to past and present employees

of the Texas prison system. The Prison Museum still receives donations of artifacts and is planning the addition of a new museum wing to accommodate the need for additional space. Over 31,000 people visited the museum in 2013. A popular and interesting tour includes Old Sparky, the Texas electric chair that executed 361 men between 1924 - 1964; artifacts from the famous Texas Prison Rodeo; inmate-made weapons; guns used by guards; artifacts from the 11-day hostage situation in 1974; a detailed model of the Huntsville “Walls” prison; and a replica cell that you can enter.
