Oregon State Parks beckon from just over the border

I

t’s not such a long cast to your next fishing vacation at an Oregon State Park. Several parks are just over the border, offering premier fishing, boating, camping and proximity to nearby attractions — all at an affordable rate and with Oregon’s renowned hospitality. Farewell Bend State Park sits on Brownlee Reservoir, popular each spring for its large and plentiful catfish, as well as bass and crappie. Just 1½ hours west of Boise on the Idaho-Oregon border, the park is also a popular base camp for hunters each October and November. Visitors can camp in electrical sites, tent sites or one of two rustic log cabins. Lake Owyhee State Park, a desert oasis just two hours west of Boise, boasts fantastic fishing each spring, especially smallmouth and largemouth bass and black crappie. The 54 mile-long reservoir also has channel catfish and is occasionally stocked with redband trout. The park’s campground offers two boat ramps and plenty of tent and electrical sites. Two cabins offer stunning lakeside views. This park is also in the perfect location for the fall hunting season. Eastern Oregon also has several small state campgrounds along scenic rivers, where fish are plentiful and distractions disappear. Scenic and quiet Catherine Creek State Park in the western foothills of the Wallowa Mountains is just 3½ hours northeast of Boise, but it feels a world away. Secluded Minam State Recreation Area on the banks of the Wallowa River is 3½ hour drive northwest from Boise. These primitive campgrounds don’t take reservations; they are perfect for that spur-of-thewww.ritzhospitalitymag.com

moment fishing trip. Farewell Bend and Lake Owyhee take reservations up to nine months in

advance, and cabins especially tend to fill quickly. Learn more and make a reservation at oregonstateparks.org 

Welcome To Ontario, Oregon Home of “America’s Global Village Festival”

O

ntario, Oregon is nestled on the lush banks of the Snake River and is proud to be the first Oregon city you encounter when traveling west from the Idaho border. Once you enter the uniquely rugged landscape of the Treasure Valley, you will come to understand why many people never

want to leave. Those who choose to live here understand the meaning and importance of a quality, family oriented lifestyle. Thus, the community reflects the energy, distinction, and diversity of its surrounding geography and residents. And speaking of diversity, this year the Ontario Chamber of Commerce will host the 18th annual America’s Global Village Festival in Lions Park on June 2nd – the first Saturday in June. The

festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. with a multicultural parade through the park followed by a flag ceremony. The Festival celebrates the authentic cultural villages of African, Basque, German, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mexican, Pioneer, Scottish and Native American cultures. Each village features food, arts and crafts, cultural demonstrations and free youth activities. The main stage will highlight cultural entertainment throughout the day. Upon entering the park for the Festival, visitors will be given a souvenir passport. With each visit to the villages, the passport will be stamped. When children have a full passport, they will receive a free prize. Adults who turn in a complete survey will have a chance to win one of two $50 gas cards. While Ontario is the kind of laid-back town you dream about when you want to get away from the hectic schedule of a busy, big city lifestyle, it also boasts a myriad of recreational activities for all ages, interests and skill levels within driving distance from its downtown area. Here you can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, golfing, camping, sport fishing, bird watching, kayaking, river rafting, horseback riding and much more. Ontario is situated only two hours from four separate ski resorts, including the world renowned Tamarack

Ski Resort in Cascade, Idaho. You can not only downhill ski to your heart’s content, but also snowmobile, cross country ski and ice skate as well. There are also 61 acres of lush parks within the city if you’re looking for a place to

just relax and enjoy the landscape. Ontario is a town where you will find the people are genuine, authentic, friendly, and down to earth. It is a town with a fascinating history, rich traditions, and a diverse population. It is also a place filled with things to do, places to see, and four distinct and beautiful seasons, so any time you choose to visit will be the perfect time. his is not a pay your money and become a member type organization. When the association was formed in 1926 it began with 35 members and today it has only a few more than 100 members. Ranches seeking to become members of The Dude Ranchers’ Association go through a rigorous two year screening process. It includes a thorough review of their application, a review of references from former guests, an appearance before the board of directors and on-site inspections during actual dude ranch operations. Typically, only 30% to 60% of the ranches that file a paid application are able to demonstrate they can provide a Western ranch vacation that meets the high standards of the association. Once accepted, ranches go through a year of probationary membership during which they undergo a second on-site inspection. Only after a satisfactory second inspection are they admitted to full membership. When you book your vacation at a Dude Ranchers’ Association member ranch you can be assured that it’s actually a ranch and not just a hotel with horses. This means you’ll find the genuine, personal Western hospitality which has helped ranch guests feel a part of the ranch family since the late 1880s. To ensure a safe, comfortable atmosphere, member ranches accept only extended stay guests during their dude ranch season. A three night minimum stay is required and week long stays are encouraged. This enables the development of the friendships and sense of belonging that seems to grow when people share special experiences. Most folks think of horses when they think of a dude ranch which is natural since horses are the primary focus. Dude Ranches also offer a wide variety of other activities for those who want more than just ridding. Fishing from private river banks, hiking, 4x4 trips, western dancing, cowboy singalong’s, overnight pack trips, children’s programs, mountain biking, spa treatments, game rooms, game courts, horsemanship clinics, skeet shooting, fitness centers are just a few of the activities provided. For a more relaxed pace, lounge around the pool or hot tub, sit on your private porch and read a good book or just enjoy the peace and quite of a simpler lifestyle. When planning your next vacation seek refuge from the pressures and routines of everyday life and vacation at a DRA ď Ž Dude Ranch. www.duderanch.org, 866-399-2339. www.ritzhospitalitymag.com

The mission of the Midland Restoration Project is to preserve and restore the Midland Theater and the Alamo Building as a multipurpose facility to accommodate public performances, events and activities. The complex will also provide a focal point for further economic development in and revitalization of the downtown core of Coffeyville. Perkins Building The Perkins Building, AKA The Condon Bank, is one of two banks that the infamous Dalton Gang attempted to rob in 1892. The Perkins Building is the most recognizable building in Coffeyville. It was built in 1890 and became

home of the Condon Bank, plus other offices and retail stores. Luther Perkins used the design of a similar structure

built in Time Square in New York. The “Flat Iron Building” design referred to its unusual shape and the use of metal on the fascia of the building. Its unique wedge shape, which conformed to the tapering of the plaza block, and its placement at the junction of three streets with a vista in five directions, made it a focal point of town. Elk City, Oklahoma

Where the Roads to the Past and Future Meet!

E

lk City is the epitome of Oklahoma and its rich heritage. From the establishment of what was once a rural community in 1901, the development of Route 66 as the nation’s first highway system to world champion cowboys, Elk City represents the heart of the great state of Oklahoma. For entertainment, visitors can “get their kicks” at a variety of museums including the National Route 66 Museum, Old Town Complex and the one-of-a-kind Transportation Museum which gives a great education in the history of how automobiles, trains and plains impacted travel in the United States. The Farm and Ranch Museum showcases decades of equipment used to harvest crops in the second largest industry in the state and the Blacksmith Museum takes you back to a time forgotten. Elk City also hosts plenty of events each year for tourists and visitors to enjoy. From the Southwest Farm and Home Expo in April, the award winning annual PRCA Rodeo of Champions on Labor Day weekend, the Fall Festival in September featuring the best in arts and crafts and the Oklahoma National Junior Heifer Show in November brings

visitors from all over to showcase their stock. The largest Christmas light display in Southwest Oklahoma, Christmas in the Park, brings back old fashioned family traditions with train rides on the candy cane express, old fashioned horse-drawn carriage rides, light tours and of course, kids of all ages enjoy riding the Centennial Carousel or the Choctaw Miniature Train. Elk City’s vibrant downtown shopping district boasts everything from rustic cowboy décor to boutiques showcasing the latest in fashion. Make a day of shopping in Elk City during Route 66 Days in June, the Sizzlin’ Summer Sidewalk Sale in July and scare up some frightful deals during Moonlight Madness in October. Be sure to bring a hearty appetite as Elk City offers a variety of restaurants guaranteed to satisfy everyone from cowboys to city slickers. When you’re ready to hang your hat, Elk City has over 850 rooms for the visitor to choose from. Located on Interstate 40, Elk City’s endless blue skies, rich rolling hills and red earth make this community a great place to hang your hat any time of year. So plan your trip to Elk City and let us share our Western Oklahoma’s hospitality. 

Nelson’s Cottages L

ocated in the Adirondack Mountains of NY State, where the lakes are very pristine, Nelson’s is only 2 to 3 hours from major airports. We are open from mid-May to mid-October........... where you can get away from it all.... in the cottages there are NO PHONES OR TV’s to distract you. During the summer, when the rest of the nation is sweltering in the heat, we enjoy very comfortable temperatures. There are numerous activities for the whole family to enjoy, as I said pristine lakes to swim in, fish from, or boat on. For those without children, fall is a beautiful time to visit, as it is not as busy, but the weather is still great and the beauty of the fall colors (leaves changing) is just unbelievable. There are many things to do up here, which don’t have to cost a dime, like sitting on the beach, reading a book and enjoying the beauty of the lakes and mountains beyond, lots of easy hiking trails, and mountain climbs, sensational sunsets. For those with some money to burn, we have sea plane rides, white water rafting trips, dinner cruises, golf courses with reasonable rates.

Come join us at Nelson’s Cottages and enjoy the beauty of the lakes and mountains beyond.
