Oregon State Parks beckon from just over the border

I

t’s not such a long cast to your next fishing vacation at an Oregon State Park. Several parks are just over the border, offering premier fishing, boating, camping and proximity to nearby attractions — all at an affordable rate and with Oregon’s renowned hospitality. Farewell Bend State Park sits on Brownlee Reservoir, popular each spring for its large and plentiful catfish, as well as bass and crappie. Just 1½ hours west of Boise on the Idaho-Oregon border, the park is also a popular base camp for hunters each October and November. Visitors can camp in electrical sites, tent sites or one of two rustic log cabins. Lake Owyhee State Park, a desert oasis just two hours west of Boise, boasts fantastic fishing each spring, especially smallmouth and largemouth bass and black crappie. The 54 mile-long reservoir also has channel catfish and is occasionally stocked with redband trout. The park’s campground offers two boat ramps and plenty of tent and electrical sites. Two cabins offer stunning lakeside views. This park is also in the perfect location for the fall hunting season. Eastern Oregon also has several small state campgrounds along scenic rivers, where fish are plentiful and distractions disappear. Scenic and quiet Catherine Creek State Park in the western foothills of the Wallowa Mountains is just 3½ hours northeast of Boise, but it feels a world away. Secluded Minam State Recreation Area on the banks of the Wallowa River is 3½ hour drive northwest from Boise. Upon entering the park for the Festival, visitors will be given a souvenir passport. With each visit to the villages, the passport will be stamped. When children have a full passport, they will receive a free prize. Adults who turn in a complete survey will have a chance to win one of two $50 gas cards. While Ontario is the kind of laid-back town you dream about when you want to get away from the hectic schedule of a busy, big city lifestyle, it also boasts a myriad of recreational activities for all ages, interests and skill levels within driving distance from its downtown area. he Northwest Carriage Museum in Raymond, Washington is North Pacific County’s most visited tourist attraction. Voted one of Washington’s best museums, the museum houses one of the finest collections of 19th century horse drawn vehicles and artifacts in the country. Every year, thousands upon thousands of people make the Northwest Carriage Museum a “must see” destination stop while visiting the Pacific Northwest. Visitors have been pleasantly surprised to find such a world class collection in the tiny town of Raymond. The Northwest Carriage Museum’s current collection has grown to over 50 horse drawn vehicles on display including elegant carriages, buggies, sleighs and work wagons. The collection includes a Stagecoach, hand carved Hearses, a Chuck Wagon and several “movie” carriages including one from “Gone with the Wind” all from the 1800’s.

Ocean Shores, Washington

The city offers many fine dining places, casual to classy; they all provide tasty food you will remember forever. Arts, crafts and photography shows are held several times a year in Ocean Shores. Shopping is at its best. Golf the championship 18-hole golf course and enjoy the pro shop and clubhouse. Horseback riding on the sandy beaches can be exciting and romantic. Coffeyville, Kansas Aviation Heritage Museum Coffeyville's Aviation Heritage Museum is dedicated to early aviation and pioneer pilots of the area, the Aviation Heritage Museum features memorabilia from the Coffeyville Air Base, a Funk airplane and Breezy, owned by Joe Funk and donated to the museum, plus many

other displays. Located in Pfister Park, the Aviation Heritage Museum is housed in a 1930's era hangar that was used when the Big Hill Airport was in operation from 1933 to 1960. The airport hangar was constructed in 1933 as a Works Progress Administration project. Dalton Defenders Museum The Museum, owned and operated by the non-profit Coffeyville Historical Society, is the realization of a dream of many Coffeyville citizens who understood the importance of collecting items not only relating to the Dalton Raid but also relating to early-day life

In the Museum, which is just east of the Plaza area, are collections of the following: • Mementos of early-day Coffeyville. • Mementos of Wendell Willkie– who lived and taught school in Coffeyville. • Mementos of Walter Johnson—who lived in Coffeyville during the off-season. • Mementos of the Dalton Raid (including recently located court records of Emmett’s trial). Midland Theater Built in the 1928, the historic Midland Theater, along with the Alamo building to the west, is currently undergoing restoration. The mission of the Midland Restoration Project is to preserve and restore the Midland Theater and the Alamo Building as a multipurpose facility to accommodate public performances, events and activities. The complex will also provide a focal point for further economic development in and revitalization of the downtown core of Coffeyville. Perkins Building The Perkins Building, AKA The Condon Bank, is one of two banks that the infamous Dalton Gang attempted to rob in 1892. The Perkins Building is the most recognizable building in Coffeyville. It was built in 1890 and became

home of the Condon Bank, plus other offices and retail stores. Luther Perkins used the design of a similar structure

built in Time Square in New York. The “Flat Iron Building” design referred to its unusual shape and the use of metal on the fascia of the building. Its unique wedge shape, which conformed to the tapering of the plaza block, and its placement at the junction of three streets with a vista in five directions, made it a focal point of town. Hays is famous for being a frontier town with a colorful history that features the legendary “Wild Billâ€? Hickok, “Buffalo Billâ€? Cody and General George Custer. Hays City was founded in the fall of 1867 when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the military post of Fort Hays along the banks of Big Creek. Because many of the first citizens were railroad workers, saloon owners, soldiers and even desperados, the early days of Hays City were wild and dangerous. During several months in 1869, “Wild Billâ€? Hickok served as the acting sheriff after several incidents prompted the citizens to form a vigilante committee. Many of the outlaws were buried at the original boot hill cemetery, which was located on a hill just north of Hays City. Historic Fort Hays and the Ellis County Historical Museum feature many displays and provide tours for visitors to relive the exciting frontier history. With attractions like the Stone Gallery, Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art, The Hays Arts Center and 711 Studio, Hays is the arts and entertainment mecca of western Kansas. The crown jewel of the Fort Hays State University entertainment scene is the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. he C.M. Russell Museum pays tribute to Charles M. Russell, Montana’s best-known artist and one of the masters of Western art. The museum houses an extensive collection—more than 2,000 pieces—of Russell’s art, as well as personal belongings and archival materials, the largest such Russell collection in the world. Works by artists such as Olaf C. Seltzer, Winold Reiss, and Gary Schildt, as well as Plains Indians ethnographic objects bring the total number of items in the museum’s permanent collection to approximately 12,000.

Permanent exhibits at the museum include multiple galleries of original works by Charles M. Russell, plus The Bison: American Icon, Heart of Plains Indian Culture, the Browning Firearms Collection, the Josephine Trigg Collection, and the Russell Riders Sculpture Garden. The museum also temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The museum complex includes the museum galleries as well as the artist’s original home and log cabin studio, which have been designated together as a National Historic Landmark. The house and studio will reopen in March 2019 after a twoyear closure for restoration and reinterpretation. The C.M. Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center

I

n her novel, The Cattlemen, Mari Sandoz wrote, “I have tried to take the reader to a high ridge, where all but the nearest arroyos and canyons are hidden, where the cactus and the sage blend into the greening sweep of the prairie that reaches far into the hazy horizon of May.” Through numerous short stories and twenty-eight novels, Mari – known as “The Storycatcher of the Plains” – brought stories of the Sandhills and the plight of Native Americans to life. The Nebraskan author’s life and works are permanently on display at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. The Center includes other exhibits, such as the C. F. Coffee Gallery showcasing early cattle ranches and banking in Northwest Nebraska, the Graves Photograph Collection of the region from 1906-1940, and the High Plains Gallery displaying temporary exhibits of art, history, and life in the region. The Center also has research facilities, a children’s corner with interactive activities, and a gift shop. The adjoining Chicoine Atrium provides a unique space for activities and events. The Center is conveniently situated thirty miles east of historic

Fort Robinson, one hundred miles south of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and about ninety miles north of the Oregon Trail sites Chimney Rock and Scottsbluff Monument.

We are open from mid-May to midOctober........... where you can get away from it all.... in the cottages there are NO PHONES OR TV’s to distract you. During the summer, when the rest of the nation is sweltering in the heat, we enjoy very comfortable temperatures. There are numerous activities for the whole family to enjoy, as I said pristine lakes to swim in, fish from, or boat on. For those without children, fall is a beautiful time to visit, as it is not as busy, but the weather is still great and the beauty of the fall colors (leaves changing) is just unbelievable. There are many things to do up here, which don’t have to cost a dime, like sitting on the beach, reading a book and enjoying the beauty of the lakes and mountains beyond, lots of easy hiking trails, and mountain climbs,

sensational sunsets. For those with some money to burn, we have sea plane rides, white water rafting trips, dinner cruises, golf
