Touch 100 Years of Aviation History
T
here’s an adventure for everyone at Pima Air & Space Museum. Hundreds of thousands visit from all over the world to create lasting memories or relive them. The
this close to such a large, international variety of iconic and rare aircraft including military, commercial, civil, and experimental. There’s 250,000 square feet of indoor exhibits in six hangars,
museum offers endless opportunities for discovery with 360 aircraft on 80 acres and 100 years of flight at your fingertips from a Wright Flyer to a 747 Queen of the Skies. Nowhere else in the world can you get
of which three are dedicated to WWII. You’ll come face to face with history’s finest planes like the SR-71 Blackbird, the first Boeing 777 ever built, the oldest B-52, and the last B-36 ever built. You’ll even get to explore under
the wings of rare and sole-surviving aircraft like the Budd Conestoga, Columbia XLJ-1, and the Martin Mariner. The unprecedented collection of aircraft at Pima began in the 1960’s. Air Force Commanders at what is now known as the “Boneyard,” the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), wanted to preserve aviation heritage from going up in flames at the smelter. What started as a line of airplanes on the base’s fence is now the largest privately funded air and space museum in the nation. Pima Air & Space Museum has got something for everyone whether you’re a decorated pilot or have never taken to the skies. Visitors routinely rave that it’s much bigger with more to do than expected and fun for all ages. The museum is in Tucson, Arizona just minutes off the highway at 6000 E. Valencia Rd. It’s open 363 days a year from 9am-5pm. Your adventure begins at www.pimaair.org.

id you know that Lea County is home to more Rodeo Champions than any other county in the United States? Visit the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame, located on the campus of New Mexico Junior College, where permanent exhibits range from the history of Southeast-
ern New Mexico (there’s more than you think!) to the pioneers, ranchers, and rodeo champs who have put Lea County on the map in the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. Check out the artifacts on display, or be one of the first to delve deeper into our collections with our new touchscreen technology. “There’s so much history here, and
the population has such pride in their heritage, that it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement,” says Erin Anderson, Executive Director. Not only can you learn about the history of the area with the permanent exhibits, but you can always find something new in the traveling exhibits gallery. “We pride ourselves on providing

a unique, educational experience for all ages,” continues Anderson. “For example, a few years back we brought in Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which was HUGE for our area. Not only was that our most successful exhibit to-date, but it also made other museums in New Mexico look at us and say ‘If HOBBS can do it, then we can too!’ How cool is that?” More recently, the Museum has hosted exhibits about Rodin, National Geographic, dinosaurs, Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear, and so much more. “You do not want to miss what we have coming up,” explains Anderson. August 19-October 31, 2021 - Explore the newest National Park, White Sands National Monument, with Into the Great White Sands: Photographs by Craig Varjabedian. Before White Sands became a National Park on December 20, 2019, artist Craig Varjabedian explored the surrealistic landscape of White Sands, near Alamogordo, NM, creating masterful images over a period of five years. White Sands is breathtakingly vast, encom-
passing 275 miles, landscape entirely made of crystals of gypsum. Pure white dunes roll in waves for miles to the mountainous horizon- forming a landscape filled with spectacular color and astonishing light. The park is brimming with a history both ancient and recently relevant, contained in an environment with flourishing vegetation and wildlife - whose days begin in vivid sunrise and end in dramatically vibrant sunsets. The Sands is an unforgettably unique place - a land that words fail to adequately describe, but whose visual beauty and wondrous imagery Varjabedian has brilliantly captured in these eloquent and evocative pictures. The fifty images selected for this exhibition of Into the Great White Sands are from his collection found in his recently published book of the same name. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA examines the history of Apollo 10 and the Peanuts characters’ role in that flight and in the NASA Manned Flight Awareness safety program. It was a very great honor when the crew
of Apollo 10 chose to nickname their command and lunar modules Charlie Brown and Snoopy, respectively. The flight of Apollo 10 in May 1969 was the “dress rehearsal” for the lunar landing that was scheduled for July 1969. Charles Schulz’s involvement with NASA began a year earlier than the 1969 flight of Apollo 10 when he was approached by NASA with a request to use Snoopy as their safety mascot. The Silver Snoopy Award program was instituted to improve the safety record of NASA employees and contractors. It proved to be a huge success with the astronauts and the employees. The Silver Snoopy pin is a much-coveted award. Snoopy has been on the job for 50 plus years and continues to this day in his role as NASA’s safety mascot. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA is organized and toured by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, Santa Rosa, California. of the Mississippi in Anamosa, Iowa, artist Grant Wood’s territory, the Museum offers visitors a look at motorcycles from around the world, 1890’s through the 20th Century. If that huge motorcycle collection isn’t reason enough to visit, Museum staff recently installed the Early American Transportation Innovation exhibition focused on pre-1920 transportation ideas and inventions of all types. A timeline of innovations opens the exhibit and you’ll learn about the origins of steam power, internal combustion in motorcycles, even aviation innovation is touched on. Central to this new show is a one-off airplane the Museum received as donation recently. The 1911 STECO Aerohydroplane, a very innovative bi-plane on floats, created by Chicago inventor James Stephens is powered by a French Gnome-Omega seven cylinder rotary engine. Surprised to see an airplane in a motorcycle museum? It turns out that Glenn Curtiss, the Wright Bothers and other inventive types experimented with wheeled and winged transportation; there’s innovation cross-over. “So many interesting approaches to transportation were tried, so many patents established in these early years. The motorcycles, bicycles and the airplane show so much interesting and creative American innovation,” says National Motorcycle Museum chairman, Jill Parham. “This was a challenging project in so many ways. We are grateful to the Minnesota Air & Space Museum for donating the STECO collection, the monetary donations of support and for all the volunteers who helped get it installed in our Museum.” Motorcycles on display include a replica 1869 Roper Steam Cycle, Flying Merkel, Iver Johnson, Reading Standard, Excelsior, Thor, Sears, Thomas, the very rare Blue Bird and Crouch plus fine Indians and Harley-Davidsons. The National Motorcycle Museum rotates exhibits annually so don’t wait long to visit. Humboldt Museum
E
ver wonder what became of old Winnemucca, the town where brave pioneers sought their fortune and weary cowboys hitched up their steeds after a day on the Nevada range? Those days live on at the Humboldt Museum, along with the Great Depression, the Roaring Twenties, and even the Ice Age. The museum offers a compendium of area history through its many artifacts. Visitors will see a turn-of-the-century soda factory scene, several horseless carriages, a set of bones from a local mammoth, remnants from Chinatown and so much more. The three acre Humboldt Museum complex consists of four structures open to tours: the former St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church built in 1907 (the original home of Humboldt Museum), the 1880’s Greinstein Mercantile Building, the Cumley-Richardson House built in 1899, and the modern two-story brick museum building
which houses the bulk of the museum’s exhibits and collections. Visitors will also enjoy plenty of RV parking

River Market Antiques
T
he River Market Antiques is positively a one of a kind antique shop located in Columbus, Georgia, where the owner, Allen Woodall, is most often available in the store to share an experience, or to answer questions about unique items in the store. With a wide variety of distinctive and limited pieces, The River Market has offered customers an enjoyable shopping experience for over 20 years. And in addition to the retail experience, customers are able to take a walk down memory lane by stepping into The World Famous Lunchbox Museum.
Columbus, Georgia native, Allen Woodall, purchased his first lunch boxes from The Lakewood Fairgrounds in Atlanta in 1985; The Green Hornet and Dick Tracy lunch boxes were the first in his collection. He found the lunch boxes to be one of the greatest forms of pop art, and it was the art that would keep Woodall on the hunt to accumulate more, and more boxes to add to his growing gallery. After a few years of compiling these miniature masterpieces, Woodall decided to write a book. He hoped his book would inspire others and promote the hobby of collecting metal lunch boxes. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Metal Lunch Boxes was Published in 1990, and re-released in 2000. The book was Woodall’s way of sharing information about lunch box manufacturers, care and cleaning instructions, carry-alls, and even advertising and original art. Today, there are over 5,000 pieces in The World Famous Lunch Box Museum, where people come from all over the world to take a walk down memory lane. Today, there are over 6 museums located inside of The River 22 R i t z

We invite you to visit Harlem, Georgia!
H
arlem, Georgia, founded in 1870, is a charming small city about half an hour west of Augusta, Georgia. In Harlem, you will experience precious small-town life and abundant southern hospitality. Harlem is the birthplace of comedic pioneer Oliver Hardy. Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel paved a path for comedians with their historic careers, which bridged the gap between the silent era short films into “talkies” or sound films culminating in full-length features. The city celebrates Oliver’s comedic legacy throughout its quaint downtown. You will find a fun Laurel and Hardy mural beside the railroad tracks, the historic water tower is crested with Oliver’s jolly smile, and inside the Harlem Museum and Welcome Center located in the historic Columbia Theater, you will discover The Laurel and Hardy Museum of Harlem, GA. The latter is the only museum dedicated to the careers of Laurel and Hardy in The United States. Each year on the first Saturday in October, Harlem hosts tens of thousands of guests at the Oliver Hardy Festival dedicated to celebrating the heart of creativity of the dynamic duo by inviting craft vendors, entertainers, lookalikes, and more. The museum also contains a deep dive into the rich history of Harlem, Georgia. Discover why the city was developed,
www.ritzhospitalitymag.com
how it was named, how the city became a summer haven for surrounding cities, and how Harlem pioneered entertainment and innovation for Columbia County. As the first city in the county, Harlem had a significant impact on the local area and the State of Georgia. Let the museum take you on a journey through both time and entertainment. In Harlem, you can enjoy an afternoon filled with shopping downtown, feasting on superb cuisine in one of the local eateries, treating yourself to some yummy ice cream at our local ice cream parlor, or even appreciate a walk through the town to experience the beauty of an eclectic blend of historic architecture. Of course, you are also encouraged to stay the evening at Columbia County’s only bed and breakfast, The Red Oak Manor. Harlem is ripe with activity as the city, the Harlem Merchants Association, and others routinely host fun-filled, family events throughout the town. So many of Harlem’s three thousand plus residents are young families, growing and nurturing the small-town with class and southern charm, making Harlem an extraordinary and welcoming place. Add us to your itinerary for any trip through Georgia and the South to get an authentic taste of both the past and present of a vibrant, growing, small southern city.

Nelson’s Cottages
L
ocated in the Adirondack Mountains of NY State, where the lakes are very pristine, Nelson’s is only 2 to 3 hours from major airports. We are open from mid-May to midOctober........... where you can get away from it all.... in the cottages there are NO PHONES OR TV’s to distract you. During the summer, when the rest of the nation is sweltering in the heat, we enjoy very comfortable temperatures. There are numerous activities for the whole family to enjoy, as I said pristine lakes to swim in, fish from, or boat on. For those without children, fall is a beautiful time to visit, as it is not as busy, but the weather is still great and the beauty of the fall colors (leaves changing) is just unbelievable. There are many things to do up here, which don’t have to cost a dime, like sitting on the beach, reading a book and enjoying the beauty of the lakes and mountains beyond, lots of easy hiking trails, and mountain climbs,
sensational sunsets. For those with some money to burn, we have sea plane rides, white water rafting trips, dinner cruises, golf
courses with reasonable rates. Come join us at Nelson’s Cottages and enjoy the beauty of the lakes and mountains beyond.
