Founded by Colonel John Floyd (1750-1783) it became the 40th county of 120 in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It is 396 square miles in the heart of eastern Kentucky, has a population of about 39,000 and was once dependent on a thriving coal mining economy. Floyd County is situated on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River and on Country Music Highway, a National Scenic Byway and has produced numerous musical talents. The county seat is Prestonsburg and Jenny Wiley State Resort Park proudly calls it home. Floyd County has a rich history, culture and people.
