Founded by Colonel John Floyd (1750-1783) it became the 40th county of 120 in the Commonwealth of Kentucky . It is 396 square miles in the heart of eastern Kentucky, has a population of about 39,000 and was once dependent on a thriving coal mining economy .
Floyd County is situated on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River and on Country Music Highway, a National Scenic Byway and has produced numerous musical talents . The county seat is Prestonsburg and Jenny Wiley State Resort Park proudly calls it home .
Floyd County has a rich history, culture and people . It was a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War but gave way to two Union victories at the Middle Creek National Battlefield and Battle of Ivy Mountain .
