S AV E YOU R SUMMER SKIN

Dr. Blossom Kochhar, Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies shares tips on Summer Skincare. Fair skin wrinkles more readily than dark skin because it contains less pigment, which acts as a natural sunscreen, blocking some of the sun's damaging UVA and B rays. To prevent wrinkles caused due to sunrays stay out of the sun, especially when it's almost directly overhead and UV radiation is strongest. Wear plenty of sunscreen and strive to apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before stepping outside. Sunscreen should always be reapplied after contact with water or after sweating. Sunscreen also should be worn year round--every time you leave the house. Smooth on a moisturiser that contains sunscreen in proper concentration. Put it on before you leave the house and reapply every two hours. 1

Steam your face regularly to open the pores and clean your face of the dirt (five minutes for dry skin and 10 minutes if it is oily). Pat dry with tissue and moisturise.

2

Cleansing your face is an extremely important step during summer. Due to going out in hot weather under the sun, your skin develops sebum in excess. You perspire due to the rising temperature. In case sebum stays for too long on the skin of yours, it can cause clogged pores and breakouts. Do not forget to cleanse the skin of yours in morning and as the day ends.

Regularly apply sunscreen. It is important to protect your skin from the UV rays of the sun. Select a sunscreen suiting best the type of your skin. For getting maximum protection from sunscreen you should not go under the sun immediately after you apply sunscreen. Instead apply sunscreen thirty minutes before sun exposure.

Do you think of your skin as a beautiful feature to be bared when the weather warms up? Or is it simply a protective shell, an instrument for touch, or a telling clue to your age? While your skin may be all of these things, it is also your body's most prominent organ. So it's essential you take care of it, especially during the summertime, when UV levels can wreak havoc on exposed skin. Summer is the season when you have to YVES ROCHER take special care of your skin. You may be surprised that your summer White Botanical Clarins Face skin, which looked radiant throughout winter, suddenly looks dull, Exceptional Treatment Clarins OneToner ` 750 OilsStep blemished and oily. This is because, in winter your skin's natural oils Gentle ` 2,950 Exfoliating solidifies, whereas in summer it flows freely. It's estimated that 90 percent Cleanser of wrinkles cause due to sun exposure. The sun's long- and short-wave ` 2,000 ultraviolet rays, or UVA and UVB, penetrate the deepest layers of skin, damaging the collagen, the spongy protein that gives skin its structure, firmness and elasticity.

Use light foundation as you will sweat in the warm weather. In place of using typical foundation of full coverage, use mineral makeup or tinted moisturiser. Light weight is felt by both products on your skin and the products are unlikely to result in clogged pores, skin irritation and breakouts.

Moisturisation is the most important part of daily skin care. Your skin needs more water than anything else and moisturisers are more needed in summer when you lose most of your body salts by sweating. Buy a water-based moisturiser and use it without fail. Make it a habit to wash your face gently with water a number of times. Rose water is also a good moisturiser and it can be sprayed on the face to tone and refresh it.

Use powder for combating oily skin. Warm weather causes shiny faces and perspiration so powder can be ultimate tool to combat oily T-zone as well as cheeks. You might use loose or pressed powder. Switch out the makeup sponge of yours every 1 to 2 weeks in case you are using pressed powder because with combination of sunscreen, natural skin oil and perspiration bacteria might build up.

1.

Makeup expert Suman Maharjan states that for blue eye makeup you need to first prep your lids with eyeshadow primer because the primer/base will protect the eyeshadow from creasing and also enhance the true colour of the eyeshadow.

2.

You can apply a blue eye pencil on the lash line and smudge it all over the lid, after which you can apply light blue or turquoise eyeshadow in the first half of your eye lids and apply a navy blue or a dark shade of blue in the outer corners so that the eyes look defined. Blend the eyeshadows well.

3.

Apply the same blue eye pencil in the lower water line and smudge that also.

4.

Now in the inner corners of your eyes you can add just a hint of highlight and use the same highlight on your brow bone.

Often neglected these brushes can be the most important tools in your makeup kit. The right kind of brush strokes need the right kind of brushes. A woman's face is no less than a canvas, where the artist carefully blends makeup to create a stunning picture that is worth a thousand words. Makeup expert Leila Sharma shares how to pick the brush that will work for you. 1.

There are two kinds of makeup brushes Natural hair brushes made from animal hair like squirrel, sable, fox and other farmed animals and Manmade bristles made from nylon, taklon, or other polyester synthetic fibers. Natural bristles are used for all powders, where as synthetic ones are used for liquids and cream based products.

2. Misnomer...makeup gives me pimples! More often than not it is unhygienic brushes/sponges that carry the bacteria to allow these problems. Regular washing is absolutely necessary as residual foundations etc are food for infections. 3. A few good brushes is all a girl needs. Chose wisely, 2 or 3 natural brushes and a few synthetic ones are all that are required for achieving a picture perfect look. 4. If cared for, brushes can last a life time. Always wash in tepid/warm water, use an antibacterial hand wash, remove all traces of makeup, rinse well, shake excess water and dry flat on a clean towel. Never soak for more than a few seconds. 5. When buying brushes always check the strength of the attachment of the bristles to the ferrule. If too many hairs come out it indicates a weak neck.

K

aushik Krish is all of 25 and is already on a high in his musical career. Confessing to have nurtured a childhood ambition of being a singer and music composer since his growing up days as a kid, Kaushik couldn’t have asked for anything more when his voice was recognised by many and soon became a hit at the age of 22. His romantic voice in the song Kannala Kannala in the Arvind Swamy starrer Thani Oruvan is still being talked about and he’s already a popular name to reckon with in the South Indian film industry. Kaushik speaks to RITZ Magazine in a free-wheeling interview on his passion for music and his future plans. “I'm from Chennai. Music has always been my passion and now I’m lucky that it’s turned into my profession. My childhood ambition was to become a music composer. I learnt keyboard and basic Carnatic music when I was 10 years old. Then I started learning keyboard on my own. Then in college when I met

Letting us in on his upcoming projects, the Loyola College graduate shares, “I’m doing music direction for a movie called 'odavum mudiyadhu oliyavum mudiyadhu which is directed by the YouTube sensation "yeruma saani" team. I’m making a debut as a music director with this movie. All the YouTube stars like Eruma Saani, Madras Central (Gopi and Sudhakar) Temple Monkey (Shara bro) Munishkanth are in it. Clapboard production (Sathyamurthi) is the producer of the movie and he is also acting in this movie. It's a very positive team and we are positive that it's going to come out well.” So is it all work and no play for the workaholic young musician we ask and Kaushik reveals, “I have to give my best in whatever I do and for that a lot of hard work is required, but I do take out some time to unwind. After a movie is released we take out some time to relax. My friends plan for me and we drive over to a hill station or to Mahabalipuram to rejuvenate for our next project. Whenever I’m feeling low, I look at Hiphop Tamizha and it’s my biggest motivation. We also watch a lot of movies together. Jeeva (Hiphop Tamizha) who was my classmate, I came to know about Aadhi (Hiphop Tamizha) through him. I learnt everything about composing from my friend Jeeva and Aadhi anna and I owe it all to them. My first song as a singer was Kannala kannala and even I had no clue when I sang it, that it would go on to become such a huge hit, as I had tried singing and had sung many songs for a few movies before that. But nothing had worked out,” shares Kaushik, who adds about the challenges he faced initially, “I came to know that my voice was finalised for the song only a day before the album got released. There was no looking back after that. That’s when my journey continued as a sound engineer for Hiphop Tamizha. I worked on the background scoring for their movies. And my second song was from Dhruva (Telugu) and third was "ennanadanthalum" from my brother Aadhi Anna’s movie Meesaya Murukku.” “After Kannala Kannala, we planned to make an independent music album. I fell in love with making songs for movies and I think music lovers loved me too as I got a very positive feedback. It was tough initially as I had to face many struggles. RITZ spotlight It’s been six decades since the company embarked on its voyage of crafting the perfect holiday for its guests. It has stood the test of time and today, the brand has become synonymous to trust, reliability and experiential holidays. With its third generation taking on the reigns, Kerala Travels has only become stronger, evolving with the times. Interview

RIYA SONNY DATSON How did the journey of Kerala Travels begin and how are you a part of this journey? It began almost six decades ago when my grandfather, PGC Pillai, was working in Mumbai for Scandinavian Airlines. Colonel G V Raja of the royal family, who was a passionate sportsman and travel enthusiast, happened to meet my grandfather and he suggested that they start a reliable travel company to assist his friends and guests who wanted to travel to Kerala. My grandmother was more than delighted at the prospect of returning to her hometown and it didn’t take very long for her to convince her husband. Thus was born Kerala travels, a travel company headed by a group of like-minded people like my grandfather, Colonel GV Raja, Hassan Marikar and other partners. Their first

Today, the Chairperson of the company is Princess Gowri Parvathy Bhai, who is the daughter of late Colonel G V Raja. Over the years, the reigns of the company have been handed down through generations and KT is one of the few companies that has the reputation of catering to clients over three generations. I worked as an intern with the company during one of

my breaks before I joined for my postgraduation. It helped me to get hands on training in the tourism sector. After I completed MBA, I got back on the rolls and presently, I am the Joint Managing Director. What makes Kerala Travels stand apart from its competitors? The most important point would be our credibility - the fact that we have been around for 60 years is very reassuring for our clients. Whenever we try to venture

We believe that travel is a personal experience. Our focus is to provide customised service for we believe that it is the people that make a destination, a holiday. Being one of the youngest directors on the board, was it a challenge to introduce new ideas and concepts? Well, the people I am working with now are the people who I have known through most of my life. To say the least, I report to my parents now, which is not easy always. We end up discussing work even at home and it is difficult to draw the line. Over the years, a lot of things have changed in the travel industry and even the travellers. The legacy becomes a bit of a stumbling block at times when we need to change with the times. I have tried to retain all the values of the company, while adapting to the current market. and had four children of her own to my mom. My strong faith in Jesus and my spiritual life also keeps me going and helps me to fight my battles. How do you strike work-life balance? It is definitely a challenge. Since I am my own boss, people perceive that I can take a day off whenever I want but it really doesn’t work that way! In fact, I don’t switch off my phone even on my day off as I can’t transfer responsibility. There are times when I feel there are more cons than pros! But it all works well finally.

What are your interests outside of work? I enjoy writing and used to write regularly for The Hindu but now I rarely get the time. ANJALI ON HER EXPERIENCES IN THE INDUSTRY, RELATIONSHIP RUMOURS AND HER FUTURE She made humble beginnings sans any luxurious landscapes or glamourous gowns. She’s bold! She’s fun! She’s smart in an uncanny way and she can be shrewd when she wants to be, yet she keeps it simple and gives her best in everything that she does. RITZ Magazine speaks to the cover girl Anjali, who made her debut in Tamil cinema as the simple smalltown girl Anandhi and soon made everyone sit up and take notice of her acting talent. The actor wants to be remembered for her roles and wants to be part of some of the most memorable movies ever made.

RITZ personality You had no formal training in acting when you made a debut in Kattradhu Tamil. Yet you did not flounder... When I worked in Kattradhu Tamil, it was the first time I was facing the camera. I did not know much about the process. But fortunately for me director Ram was there to tell me what to do. He would show me exactly what was required and how to go about it. I just followed everything he said. People who watched the movie said that I had given a very mature performance, which made me feel good. I learnt everything on the set, on the job. Then my next movie was Angadi Theru. The role was so much more serious than before and hence I really had to put in more effort. And just like that from one movie to the next, from one role to the next I figured my way out. In most of the movies you have done, you have co-stars who are well-known actors. How do you hold your ground in spite of that? When I listen to a story, I try to understand my role. I need to feel a spark and make a connection with the character. I accept to do the part only if I am confident that I can do justice to the role. And then when it comes to the time of shooting, I should be able to become that character, only then will it stand out. When you’re in front of the camera you have to focus on the character completely. You have to put 100% effort into making the character as believable as possible. At the end of the day, what counts is how well you have performed, that’s the only way to hold your ground. When you are a part of multi-starrers that are attached with bigger stars, do you feel intimidated? I think that feeling was there only when I did Iraivi. The movie had stars like Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, SJ Suryah... all of them are good actors. And we all had equally important roles. When we started the shoot I had lots of scenes with Vijay Sethupathi, and I was very conscious of the fact that I was acting with a guy who has given some fantastic performances. And in being so

26 RITZ April 2018

fell into place. My character managed to stand out and was also much spoken about. Every actor needs to do a variety of roles. But sometimes they get labelled or stereotyped. In your case, you did a lot of non-glam roles so when you suddenly turned glamorous, it came as a shock... It’s not like I said I would never do glamorous roles. I think it was around Settai and Kalakalppu that I did my first glamourous role. In both movies the characters I played were sketched in such a way that I needed to look glam. I am not saying that I will only do glamourous roles or that I will never do them either. I will do whatever is required of the character that I play. You acted in Mankatha but you were not paired with Ajith. Likewise in Singam 2 also, you were featured in just a song. Does it irk you that you have not starred with big heroes? I did have a few scenes with Ajith sir and I was very happy to work with him. I may not have been paired with him, but I am definitely happy that I got to work side-by-side. In general for me to do a role in a movie, I should have a meaty part to play. Just because I want to be paired with a big hero, I do not chase after roles in their movies. I want to play a substantial part in the plot. And actually these days even though the movies are riding on the big heroes, the heroines are also given importance. So if something like that comes along, I wouldn’t mind doing it. For me what matters is what role is being offered to me.

conscious of that and in wondering whether I was doing a good enough job, I was losing my originality. I was losing grip of the character. That’s when I just told myself to stop bothering about how good the co-stars were and focus on giving my best to my role. Each actor must work to their fullest potential to the story. ULTIMATE REJUVENATION! Text by RIYA SONNY DATSON The soft glow from the Vellaku (lamp) is the only glimmer of light in the dark room that is soaked with the distinct fragrance of Ayurvedic oils and rose petals. Even under this faint flicker, the soothing music, entwined with the sounds of chirping birds gently calm your nerves. As the warm concoction of oils touches your skin, your body starts to unwind and before you realise it, the smooth yet firm massage swiftly drifts you into a state of sheer bliss. The Ayurvedic massage is the ultimate form of rejuvenation that eliminates stress, fatigue and pain using medicated herbal oils. The science of life that dates back to over 5000 years is one of the oldest traditions of healing that has its roots in India. Ritz explores the Ayurvedic therapies offered at the Ayuh Spa at the Le Meridien hotel, with Dr. Amrutha Raj, who has been practising Ayurveda for over a decade now. What is the basic philosophy of Ayurveda? Ayurveda is one of the only forms of ancient healing which focuses on treatment and prevention of diseases using natural herbs. Ayurvedic treatment and medication differs for each person depending on his/her ‘Prakriti’. Vatha, Pitha and Kapha are the three basic elements that determine each person’s ‘prakriti’. These elements are present in everyone in different permutations and combinations. A person falls sick or feels uneasy when this delicate balance is disturbed. During a consultation, an

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, SANCTUARY Student life: Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT- Manipal). Design highpoints: We have bagged four National Awards. Sanctuary Office was shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival- Berlin 2017. We were selected as 50 most promising GenX Designers by Architecture and Design 2017. We were shortlisted as one amongst three MIT Architecture Alumni’s to propose a design for the new facility for the Faculty of Architecture. We have conceived ZenDen- What I believe will be the future of housing in the country to for that matter even in this world. Awards and recognitions: Sanctuary has won several awards and recognition over the years of which Sanctuary Office, The Open Box Restaurant and Puma Social Club and Nautanki Galli have won National Awards. Signature style: My signature style is to exercise restraint and keep things minimal (minimalist), highly functional (form follows function), create a sense of grounding by use local material, and arts and crafts (wherever necessary), break stereotypes by subtly mixing the old and the new, and introducing soul through light, materiality, texture and colour (or the lack of it). What my clients like about me is that I am always open to listening to them and working together with them rather than in isolation and that I give my heart and soul into every project because I truly love what I do.

Current trends: The current trend is about finding new sustainable approaches in design and construction together by using and exploring and creating new technologies rather than waiting for them. This then can give rise to new ways to construct, newer materials to construct with and hence giving rise to new fresher ways to design as well. Today one has to re-invent design by re-inventing or creating new technology. April 2018 RITZ 33

RITZ trending Now SANDEEP KHOSL A , FOUNDER + PRINCIPAL, KHOSLA ASSOCIATES, ARCHITECTURE + INTERIOR DESIGN Student life: I studied Architecture at Pratt Institute, New York, and in the undergraduate program I was introduced for the first time to Architectural discourse. I was exposed to a variety of methodologies and complex abstract exercises in the making of form. The inspiring professors I had were architectural thinkers and not practitioners. On returning to India, I worked with the late Charles Correa in Mumbai. At Charles’ office I learned how an intelligent practice has drawn inspiration from our history and tradition and developed a strong contemporary design language. This is where I gained the practical knowledge of practicing in India. Interior design as a discipline has been completely self-taught. I picked up skill by delving into one project after another, from Hospitality to residential interiors. I started designing interiors innately from the gut, and I still do. Design highpoints: I established the firm in 1995 and it has been an exciting journey ever since. I have also had a strong and rewarding 15-year working relationship with my partner Amaresh Anand who is the other Principal in the firm. We both head a relatively small boutique outfit of 15 architects and Interior designers, and have a very collaborative approach to our work. The excitement for us has been to be able to work on a varied palette of projects, with some exciting clients and inspiring sites. The shifting of scale in our work from a small detail to a large master plan keeps us engaged and never bored of a single typology of project. Awards and recognitions: Our body of work at Khosla Associates has won us over 30 national and international awards in the past 23 years; Awards that stand out include the Inside Outside Designer of the Year Award, 2010, The ‘Education’ Category winner at the World Architecture Festival WAF/ INSIDE Festival 2013 in Singapore, and very recently the Winner of “House of the Year 2017” at the WAN (World Architecture News) Awards, London. We have also been named by Architectural Digest India one of the 50 most influential names in Indian Architecture and Design in the Subcontinent for 5 consecutive years (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). Some of our key award winning projects include ‘Retreat in the Sahyadris’, a weekend home in the Western Ghats, the ‘Cliff House” in Kerala and the ‘Bhuwalka House’ in Bengaluru. In the Education space ‘The DPS Kindergarten School’ in Bengaluru, and ‘The Arts and Media Centre’ at The Doon

School, Dehradun have brought our firm recognition. ‘Shiro’, ‘Loft 38’, ‘Touch’ and ‘1Q1’ have been key breakthrough projects in the Hospitality category. Signature style: Our work is highly contextual and rooted to ones environment and to a particular site. We draw inspiration from traditional concepts, craft as well as local material and interpret the same in new and innovative ways. In doing so, we have over the past 20 years developed our own version of an ‘India Modern’ Sensibility. There is a certain timeless quality to our work that seems to appeal to our clients. Current trends: Trends in Architecture are short-lived. The time has come to create buildings that are truly "relevant" and “sustainable”, not just "trendy". Concerns of buildings should be driven by the need (social, economic, cultural, environmental and local) rather than only an image. There is no doubt that there is some sensitive and thought provoking architecture emerging from our country, but a majority of architecture in our urban environment has been put up by developers and sadly in their case, whether residential or commercial it's really about building an image and selling an aspirational dream. Hence ideas from distant parts of the world are transported and replicated in a cut-and-paste way into our urban fabric with absolutely no sense of context. In Interior Design there is a wave of eclecticism with the barrage of images that everyone has from the Internet. As a firm we personally seem to be gravitating towards interior spaces that are hand crafted, authentic, natural, tactile, warm and friendly.

Shortlisted for WAF (World Architecture Festival 2012-Hotel Category. Signature style: A fusion of traditional and contemporary styles. We tend to blur the lines between the built and unbuilt spaces. Current trends: We find that washroom designs in residences, corporate office collaborative spaces and open office plans are a trend that will stay for a while. We experiment with technology and skilled engineering in built spaces without compromising on giving a traditional touch to the space through courtyards, passive lighting techniques, etc., April 2018 RITZ 35

CHIEF DESIGNER AND DIRECTOR, WHITE SPACE - INNOVATING DESIGN, INDIA & EUROPEPRINCIPLE ARCHITECT AND FOUNDER, GEORGE DESIGN GROUP Student life: I studied design in Jenson & Nicholson in India in early years. Later at Greek Oaks, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA & The Art Institute of Toronto, Canada. I’m now based out of both Europe and India, providing design consultation and execution in both parts of the world. Design highpoints: Completing end to end interiors of two highend bungalows in a record time of four days to be ready for a corporate film shoot. We are known for our skill in execution, a finer touch to things around and to bring about special themes through breathtaking designs across the world. Awards and recognitions: Something big is coming my way sometime this year and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Signature style: Though I create spaces with varied thematic implementations, my signature styles are European Countrystyle, Vintage and Heritage styles. Scandinavian style inspires me a lot. Indian heritage style has surprising

intricacies that never fails to amaze me. I love to make a space feel timeless and make people feel connected. Home designing can be a story telling too, through the selection of texture, elements and colour palette that reflect the lifestyle of the dwellers. If a home does not envelope the character of the people who belong to it, the space will never belong to the people. Half of the design is made after I meet them twice and taking them through the process of reaching the solution. They often ask me how I reach the design solution that they completely relate to, despite them not having expressed much on their desires. Providing the clients with a functional space designed aesthetically with a timeless bound makes them feel safe and secured to trust me with their space. Current trends in interiors/architecture: Trends are ever changing or never changing. The term that was called Modern in midcentury might still be in vogue till date. Curative is better than decorative! The modern designers like to have collectibles than decoration items. Geometrics and abstracts, bold and the pastels, fusion and pure, will always find a way and make trends with their turns. I like to go by what my mind imagines looking at a space. We have designed homes in styles as diverse as European Classical, Indian traditional, Classical, Eclectic, Industrial Chic, Minimalistic, Modern International, Scandinavian, Rustic, Shabby Chic, Bohemian, Kitsch, etc. Current trends: The Home Interiors industry in India is seeing a predominance preference of the Modern International style. Clean lines, geometric profiles, muted colour palettes and few statement pieces are the flavour of the season. With exposure to international trends increasing, we are able to include sub-styles that are in trend as part of the design solution based on the client’s individual style: European Classical, Indian traditional (which is seeing a revival), Eclectic, Industrial Chic, Minimalistic, Scandinavian, Rustic, Shabby Chic, Bohemian, Kitsch, etc.

SONYA SURI , DESIGNER AND FOUNDER, IDESIGNZ Student life: I finished my course in Interior Design and Architecture from Exterior- Interior Pvt ltd by Jenson and Nicholson, New Delhi. Design highpoints: During my stint with Juneja Associates, I worked and designed big Hotel chains like ITC Hotels, Leela Hotels, Oberoi and executed and handled 132rooms for Ista Hotel Bengaluru. The other project close to my heart was designing Himani Modi’s residence while working with Prem Nath and Associates. Signature Style: My style is minimalistic with a strong bend towards Zen interiors concepts which are purely about straight lines. I like mixing natural elements together like stone and wood. I dedicate my time solely on one project while finalising designs before taking up other projects and through the implementation process. I have a very practical approach towards home interiors and like to strike a fine balance between daily activities with a good blend of comfort and attractive interiors.

Current trends: The trends internationally are moving towards a look which is beyond what we Indians are used to - keeping the interiors rough, rugged, unfinished, unpainted and giving a very natural look to your abode. In India, we have adapted a few elements of these trends where the usage of terracotta for floors or walls is being seen a lot. Rustic and reclaimed wood usage requires less maintenance and is friendly on the pocket too. April 2018 RITZ

hen it’s beautiful skin and hair on your mind then it has to be Juicy Chemistry, the only certified Organic brand with over 100 SKU's Certified Organic by Ecocert France according to COSMOS Standard. This is what sets them apart from brands that claim to be natural, pure, herbal or ayurvedic. If you’re thinking beauty then think organic ingredients that go in the making of makeup and skin-care products that are rich in antioxidants and entirely free of synthetic fillers. From the lush fields of Kashmir to the intoxicating mountains of the Nilgiris, from the mineral rich Dead Sea to the majestic Alps, their experts travel great lengths to source the finest and the most nutrient rich ingredients the region has to offer. These rich and exotic ingredients are skillfully incorporated into all the Juicy Chemistry products using precise manufacturing techniques, bringing together the delicate balance of powerful active ingredients with exceptional functionality. The formulations are carefully created with a blend of essential oils, butters, base oils and botanicals, each serving as a powerful nutrient source for our skin.

Skincare should be as simple as eating healthy and that’s why in the quest to craft products that are in its purest and raw form, petroleum and petro-chemical based derivatives have been replaced with natural ingredients. The brand is organic certified and that assures you that your skin care products are free of the synthetic chemicals often used in the skin care industry. Juicy Chemistry was co-founded by Pritesh Asher and his wife, Megha in 2014. It all began one day when Pritesh was on a routine Sunday visit to the mall. While pretending to help his wife with the chores, he was approached by a sales person with a brand new product launched into the market, claiming that it was all natural. While reading, a few of the ingredients caught his attention as he was using them as raw material in his manufacturing processes at his petroleum products plant and that got him thinking that there has to be an alternative, a genuine personal care brand that cared! Juicy Chemistry was born with a goal to provide effective skin care products formulated with the purest and the most nutrient rich ingredients the nature has to offer. Pritesh states, “At Juicy Chemistry, we bring together the elements of nature

in perfect harmony to craft pure and nutrient rich products. With over 70 variants, ranging from serums, day creams, body butters, scrubs, foot creams, toners, anti-ageing cream, lip butters and scrubs, shampoo bars and 10 gourmet soaps, we provide complete facial care, body care, hand and feet care, and hair care products. The formulations are carefully created with a blend of essential oils, butters, base oils and botanicals, each serving as a powerful nutrient source for our skin. Once we started showcasing the products, and reviews had started pouring in, we created an online platform where we not only sold the products but also created awareness about the benefits of using 100 percent natural, nutrient rich products. Simplifying Skincare was what we wanted to do!” Talking about learning the techniques behind skin care making, he adds, “The first step for us was to find alternatives to replace petroleum and petro-chemical based derivatives with natural ingredients. Once we did this, we realised that we would have to compromise shelf life for purity. Given the volatile nature of these natural ingredients, handling and formulation of these products require precise manufacturing techniques to ensure nutrient values of active ingredients are not lost during the process. Juicy Chemistry products offer maximum therapeutic benefits upon application. All our recipes are unique and are formulated in house using carefully selected ingredients to create various blends and combinations that work together to heal renew and nourish the skin cells.” Look out for the latest range of refreshing Toners, like – Hibiscus and White Tea Toning facial mist. “Knowing the harmful ingredients that are present in commercial toners we came up with a unique concept and introduced our brew it yourself facial toning teas. We have also launched a new line

of Gourmet Soaps, which will be ready by September. Our Bug Me Not Body Butter was specially made on demand, by a mother whose child suffered from horrible mosquito bites that led to severe rashes. Some of the most potent skin care ingredients are found in nature, including antioxidant vitamins, anti-bacterial essential oils and anti-inflammatory herbs. We are available across 20 states in India and over 15 countries internationally and are working with multiple online platforms. We currently have channel partners in Goa, Mumbai, Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Nilgiris district and we further plan to extend our reach in Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi in the next 6 months.” It’s all about creating your “juicy chemistry” with nature! A TAX MAN WHO FILES HIS RETURNS TO SOCIETY! DR. SIBICHEN MATHEW, IRS BY SANJAY PINTO

'A

DR. SIBICHEN MATHEW, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai & Puducherry 50 RITZ April 2018

Tax Man' may well be his core avatar, but it's a title that Dr.Sibichen Mathew is not particularly fond of. And for good reason. Because it does little justice to his versatility. The 'short' CV of this 1992 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Officer runs into three full pages and if you miss his present designation – Commissioner of Income Tax, at the top, you may wonder if it's a Vice Chancellor's credentials! Consider these academic distinctions: A Masters in Sociology from Loyola College, University of Kerala, Post Graduation in Management and Public Policy from I.I.M Bangalore, M Phil in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, a doctorate in Fiscal Sociology and Public Finance from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, LLB from the Karnataka State Law University, Gold Medals galore and University top ranks.

We are not done yet! Courses in International Public Policy, from Syracuse University, USA, Corporate Taxation and Advocacy Skills from Duke University, USA, specialised training in Cyber Crimes, Money Laundering and Capital Markets from various institutes in India, Research Fellowships from the UGC, the Common wealth Fellowship through the Govt of India and nominations for ICSSR and ISEC Fellowships. More to go! 7 research publications, papers presented at national and international seminars, the tag of a Certified Fraud Examiner, 2 books and a blog. Phew, here's a candidate who will have trouble choosing from a wide array of post-retirement assignments! Not surprisingly, at one point, Sibichen wished to be “an arm chair academician” but gradually realised that “it is easy to dissect individuals and groups in cozy libraries, seminar halls and project reports. One needs to be part of the governance to make a difference in society.” That explains his plunge into the Civil Services well aware of the “Weberian notion of the bureaucracy as an iron cage.” The IRS, as opposed to the IAS or IPS, seemed to have a a natural pull as “we are relatively independent of political masters”. Is that so? Sibichen is quick to qualify that. “Especially at the micro level.” Assignments range from “Assessment & Criminal Investigation to Judicial roles, Audits, Administration & Systems Management”, with exposure to all types of businesses, tax laws, economic offences, innovative techniques of investigation and transnational tax practices.” Does that sound like ta glowing advertisement for the IRS, a la Indian Army's 'Do You Have It In You?' clarion call? Coming from “a non-business background” Sibichen's parents – Mr. Mathew, whom he lost early in his life and Mrs. Thresiamma,a teacher, who is his “oxygen” and most of his relatives had jobs “either in academics or in government”. It took a while to grapple with the nuances of business and its inter-play with tax laws and procedures. “What is apparent may not be real” and the challenge was to ferret out “the truth behind what has been window-dressed.” With two Gold Medals, one from the Director General of the National Police Academy during his Civil Services foundational course and the other from the Director General, National Academy of Direct Taxes, for his performance in extra curricular activity, left his mentors in little doubt of his professional flair. Straight off the block, as an Assistant Commissioner, Sibichen cracked a large money laundering racket “in the guise of NRI gifts involving

hundreds of taxpayers, through a very challenging and complex investigation.” While working as the Deputy Director (Investigation), he had the unique record of being “successful in every search case processed.” As the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, he led investigations and assessments “in many scams including the penny stock scam and illegal mining income frauds involving high profile politicians.” These feats won him recognition by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) consecutively for 6 years in a row, which is a “rare honour” but small wonder, given his motto of 'Promise Less, Deliver More.' In his four year stint as Advisor, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in charge of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala, “it was very heartening to April 2018 RITZ

RITZ corridors of power directly interact with the consumers and other stake holders in the telecom sector and get vital policy inputs.” In his current posting as the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), his “aim is to discover truth, render justice and clear the backlog through extra efforts.” Targets set by the department have been “exceeded”, he reveals with a sense of justifiable pride. Are these targets met by the perceived 'harassment' of the common man? Sibichen makes it clear that “the current focus of the department is to detect potential tax evaders through non-intrusive means. It extensively uses data mining, data analytics and digital surveillance to detect tax evasion and understand the tax compliance profile of the assessees.” The high tech 'snooping' also admittedly involves “reactive forensic auditing and investigation in collaboration with other domestic and international agencies in gathering primary and direct evidences of crime and also satellite imagery to assess historical claims.” Post demonetisation, the Income Tax Department launched the Operation Clean Money Mission. “It found that a staggering 78.4% who made huge cash deposits were business persons, of which 53.4% were from the trading sector. It was found in the preliminary analysis that cash deposits made by 18 lakh persons were not in tune with their tax profile. 36% of PAN holders among the cash depositors had not filed their I.T returns. About 6 lakh new cases were detected and it identified 14000 recent acquisition of properties of more than 1 crore, where owners had not filed returns. Since huge data is with the department, work load of the department has increased. Sibichen rubbishes claims on the high cost of tax enforcement arguing that “India’s cost of collection is only 66 paise (0.66%) of every 100 Rupees collected.” A prolific toastmaster and author, Sibichen has written extensively on the ‘why and how’ of black money in his book 'Making People Pay: The Economic Sociology of Taxation.' Released by the Governor of Karnataka in 2010, the book has seen three re-prints. Black money, he says, is “inextricably linked to its application in elections and for bribes.”Why does the real estate transaction template still have a black and white component? “Property transactions continue to be an area where substantial black money is circulated. We can curb tax evasion through undervaluation in a limited manner by estimating capital gains by adopting the guideline value.”

52 RITZ April 2018

'When the Boss is Wrong',his more recent book, received adulatory endorsements from corporate head honchos like Cyrus Mistry, Narayanamurthy and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. It has become a best-seller, again with three reprints in 12 months, probably “because of the narration of experiences of people who faced bad bosses.” His blog 'Sibi - Cyber Diary' is a stress buster, safety valve and and a creative space to share “the way I think, feel and respond.” Having started blogging nine years ago, he has contributed around two hundred articles on society, relationships, lifestyle and inspirational real life stories, some gleaned from his career guidance of poor students and leadership training modules through his brainchild – the IRS Social Responsibility Forum. It's not just speaking and writing, Sibichen has also directed three short films on social causes. With such a power packed schedule, one wonders if 24 hours a day are enough! With the skin of his teeth, the top IRS officer makes time for long walks and family dinners with his dematologist wife Dr Vanita Mathew and his son Nirmal Mathew, a budding lawyer and daughter dear Nilima Theresa Mathew, now in Class XII. If the Life & Times of Sibichen Mathew is to be made into a 'Catch Me If You Can' sort of film one day, it certainly cannot be short like the CV he emailed me. Because he is more, a lot more, than a tax man.

THE CONSUMER IS A GLORIFIED SLAVE, NOT THE KING BY SANJAY PINTO

A

TV serial, on good old Doordarshan, that I would seldom miss as a school boy, was 'Rajini', in which the inimitable Priya Tendulkar had essayed the role of an intrepid consumer activist. That programme almost triggered a movement in the country. And it was no coincidence that the very next year, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, came into being in India. But just how far have we come 32 years since the statute was enacted and 56 years after former US President J.F. Kennedy moved a bill to safeguard consumer rights, strangely enough, on the 'Ides of March, which has come to be observed as World Consumer Rights Day? It's an occasion to come up with platitudes and awareness drives. Little else. Because,

54 RITZ April 2018

much as citizens flock to consumer fora to redress their grievances, it's a charade on the ground. Don't get me wrong. I am a consumer activist at heart. When I moved from TV to Law, I earned my spurs with a victory in a Consumer Court, representing an international sportswoman against a big private bank. My pessimism is not unfounded. It is based on ground realities. Hear me out. The Consumer Protection Act provides for the resolution of disputes within 3 months if no lab testing is required and 5 months if analysis of samples is to be done. So that's a prescribed time frame of either 90 or 150

A CONSUMER DISPUTE MUST BE RESOLVED WITHIN 3 TO 5 MONTHS. BUT EVEN ADJOURNMENTS ARE MUCH LONGER! ON AN AVERAGE, A CASE GOES ON FOR 2 TO 5 YEARS AND MORE. days for the whole case. Sadly, a single adjournment mechanically given is for half that period in district fora or State Commissions and even 9 months at the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. On an average, a consumer case takes a minimum of 2 years for a judgment and it can go up to more than 5 years. Factor in the three tier appeal apparatus, and the execution of an order, and you will realise how 'expeditious' the system is! There have been vacancies unfilled for a whole year. The Tamil Nadu State Commission, for instance, had been headless for more than a year and work had come to a standstill due to lack of quorum. Is our commitment to the cause so shamelessly inadequate? Is it limited to insipid slogans only on the 15th March every year? Do vacancies come with the suddeness of flash floods? Is talent so hard to come by that retirees cannot hand over the baton to new hands before they demit office? Is forward planning rocket science? Although the Act allows aggrieved consumers to appear in person and even send their complaints by post, without hiring lawyers, the filing requirements and resultant 'compliances' are so needlessly cumbersome and time consuming designed to frustrate even a trained legal resource. The calibre of some members in these fora is another concern. I remember arguing a case of an airline switching off the air conditioning for an hour, after boarding, for refuelling, causing the passengers cooped up inside to feel suffocated and claustrophobic. The learned judge dismissed the complaint on the ground that “there would have been no possibility of suffocation, as even if the AC had been switched off, the fans would have been running. Good grief! The client was justifiably shocked and let down that although it was a fit case for an appeal, he chose to cut his losses and lump the injustice. Now taking deficient service and unfair trade practices, the twin evils that haunt consumers, in their stride, is unacceptable in this era of awareness. But I know scores of clients who choose to look the other way just to get closure rather than fight in court. Last week, I myself

was in a quandary. I bought a tube of Biotique Shaving Gel from a Nilgiris franchisee in Alwarpet, Chennai. When I tried to use it, the gel seemed dried up with just a small quantity oozing out. It was just seventy five rupees. I could have flung it into the dustbin and bought some other brand from another store. Instead, I chose to complain. As my work involves appearing in court and on tv and a slew of public platforms, I could ill afford a skin allergy on my face due to a seemingly defective or spurious product. So I took the trouble to call the store and ask for the Manager. The person wasn't available and although I left my number, he did not have the courtesy to return my call. A complaint to the Biotique call centre toll free line elicited a robotic response with the operator asking for a range of details, except my hororscope! A tweet to the manufacturer's handle drew a blank. E mails to the company and the store resulted in responses seeking details, most of which was already in my initial mail. I often wonder if the strategy at complaints cells is to tire out the customer in the hope that he would give up. In both cases, while the store and the manufacturer insisted on my full address, despite the signature on my email carrying my name, designation and contact information, their replies carried no name and job title. Reading the bar code and the date of manufacture on the crimp often require a magnifying glass even for a person with reasonably good eye sight. Is 75 rupees worth my time and energy? Or should I fight on principle? My instinct is to take it to court. But a more pragmatic solution would be for me to chuck it, move on and boycott both the retailer and the manufacturer. If a 'let it be' approach is the better part of maturity, then the consumer is not the king but a slave and an enabler. Now that's hardly a close shave!

COOL CHOPS! KOCHI

As the temperatures soar to new heights, stepping outdoors would leave you with a nasty sunburn or rashes or even worse a heat stroke! It is also a time when you need to watch what you eat and there is nothing as soothing as a light summer salad to beat the heat! Chill off this season with some delectable yet nutritious fruit and veggie salads. RITZ catches up with renowned nutritionist, Dr. Mumtaz Khalid Ismail, who shares some interesting tips and healthy salad recipes!

Interview by RIYA SONNY DATSON Say ‘Yes’ to: • WATER: It is most important during summer. A healthy person should consume 1500 – 2500 ml of water per day for proper functioning of the body and to prevent dehydration, constipation, urinary infection etc. • SALADS: Summer salads have extra nutritional benefits since fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants and other phytonutrients that may slow ageing, protect against cancer, stroke, improve blood pressure and keep your heart healthy. And just about all is low-calorie, so your waistline stays in check, another big health benefit. • SPROUTS: Sprouts are very good during summer as they are rich source of vitamin C. Niacin content is increased to 60 – 100%. Iron gets loosened from its bound form and becomes easily available. Germination also uses up the indigestible sugars in the seeds so bean sprouts produce less intestinal gases than beans. Sprouting also substantially increases some of the B vitamins present in the bean,

60 RITZ April 2018

including thiamine, folate, B6 and biotin. Sprouts are also high in protein and low in energy. • SARDINES: Among the non-vegetarian foods, fish can be taken in plenty since it provide the omega 3 fatty acids and a rich source of long chain n-3 PUFA which are biologically more active than their parent member namely alpha linolenic acid in providing several health benefits. Sardines and mackerel are rich source of these fatty acids.

Say ‘No’ to: • Foods that put stress on the heart and small intestine in summer include alcohol, red chillies, tamarind, masala, fried foods, foods with chemical additives, coffee, chocolate, and soft drinks. • Overeating, especially meat, cheese and eggs. Salads with greens, vegetables, fruits and nuts work perfectly for summer meals.
