Move over the 3 step skin care regime of cleansing, toning and moisturising and take out time to pamper your skin the Korean way. Korean beauty products have entered the Indian market and their natural plant based face masks work wonders. Flawless skin requires no witchcraft. Just a 10-step skincare regimen! The K-Beauty 10-step skincare regimen, the reason for Korean women’s flawless, luminous complexion is out. Here's your guide to Korean beauty regime of the 10 Step Routine, courtesy Nykaa.

1. Cleanse-The first step is the same as the age-old routine, cleansing. Korean women use an oil based face cleanser to remove oil-based remnants of SPF, mascara, foundation and lipstick. The way you use the facial cleanser is important-Massage your face in circular motions with the cleanser increases circulation, giving you brighter skin! Massage away! 2. Cleanse Again - Cleansing is a huge part of the Korean skin care routine. The belief is that one must spend enough time taking off all that gunk from the face if one has spent 30 minutes putting it on in the first place! This step requires you to use a water-based makeup remover.

JMD Medico Furacol C cream ` 120

3. Exfoliate - This process sloughs off dry skin and cleanses out clogged pores. At the end of this step your skin will look fresher and visibly brighter! This step is advised twice or thrice a week if you have normal-combination skin. Sensitive skin needs a once-weekly exfoliation only. 4. Tone - Skin toner helps balance the skin’s pH levels and prepares it for the steps to follow. It’s important to use a gentle skin toner that doesn’t dry your skin out. You can simply dab it in on your skin with a cotton ball or apply on fingertips and massage all over your face. 5. Essence - Think of essence as the heart of a Korean skin care routine. A bit dual purposed, essence is a kind of toner and skin serum hybrid that hydrates skin and aids in cell repair and turnover. Apply directly to freshly toned skin with your hands and pat in.

6. Serum/booster - These are concentrated versions of an essence with a whole lot of active ingredients. Now that your skin is fully prepped for absorption, immediately follow up with a lightweight yet intensive treatment to boost elasticity and maintain skin health. Just tap, tap, tap away the product, lovingly encouraging it to seep into skin. This step helps in correcting and perfecting your skin, especially if you have pigmentation, wrinkles, dullness or acne. 7. Sheet Masks - This Korean invention has taken the world by storm! These face shaped sheet fabrics are soaked in powerful serums packed with skin loving ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamins. Keep the sheet mask on for half an hour on a cleansed face to give your skin time to absorb all the magical goodness from the mask, thrice a week. 8. Eye cream - In the battle against wrinkles, your eyes are always the first to show signs of fatigue. Prevent crows’ feet with a revitalising eye cream that delivers penetrative moisture to the delicate and thin under-eye area for common under-eye concerns such as wrinkles, dark circles and dullness. 9. Face cream - Depending on your skin type you can now use a face cream that works for you. This helps in locking in moisture to keep your face soft and supple. 10. Slather on SPF - Koreans are obsessed with sun protection! This is an essential and extremely important step. Sunscreen helps protect your skin from sun damage, wrinkles, pigmentation, tanning and other woes.

His passion for cinema, his infectious energ y, his inspiring spirit, his zest for life... this South Indian Superstar definitely is on a different high altogether! The kind of high you get when you are at peace with yourself and in love with your life. In a laidback, chilled out chat with Aruna R Krishnan, in her spanking new chat show Galatta With Aruna on the YouTube channel Galatta Tamil, Vikram discusses the myriad of things going on with him now... and on staying young and staying hopeful... EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW... 18 RITZ February 2018

SKETCH IS A NORTH MADRAS ROLE. DHRUVA NATCHATHIRAM HAS AN INTERNATIONAL FEEL. TELL US ABOUT THESE MOVIES... Sketch is set in North Chennai, that’s about it. And for the sake of cinematic drama, yes there is the ‘North Chennai’ slang. Truth be told, nobody really talks that way even in North Chennai these days. But yeah for the sake of it, that drawl is there. And yes, Dhruva Natchathiram is on the other side of the spectrum. Gautham Menon and I go way back. He actually wanted me to do Kaakha Kaakha, but that did not work out. And then we have met so many times and discussed what we could do next. I have always told him that I wanted to do something that was international, stylish and romantic. Dhruva Natchathiram is all of that! When you watch the movie you will feel like you are watching an English movie. If you watch the trailer that Gautham has done, you will go crazy. I can’t wait for people to watch the trailer and then the movie.

BUT YOU INSISTED ON DIRECTOR BALA? Yeah. When Dhruv was younger, Bala would jokingly say that only he would direct Dhruv’s first movie. But that is not why we chose Bala. It’s just that I could not think of anyone else who has a better understanding of people and characters. And Bala has told me several times that he wants to move away from his dark, rural subjects. I am sure Bala will do justice to the movie. And I am grateful producer Mukesh agreed to my request.

|

HOW DID YOUR SON GET CAST IN THE ARJUN REDDY REMAKE? HOW INVOLVED ARE YOU WITH IT? After Arjun Reddy released I heard that there were lots of actors who were interested in doing the remake. That’s when I got a call from producer Mukesh Mehta, asking if Dhruv would star in the Tamil remake. At first I was not sure if this was a genuine call. Then I met him. He’s a very sweet person and he had watched Dhruv’s dubsmashes and seen his pictures and was convinced that Dhruv would be the best for the part. But at the time Dhruv was studying Method Acting in New York. I was not sure he would be interested. But then I thought about Arjun Reddy. I felt that it was a beautiful film and would be the perfect launch-pad for Dhruv. So when I called him and he was apprehensive about leaving school and coming, I convinced him. He is a very smart kid and often so mature that it feels like he is the dad and I’m the son! There have been times when he has advised me to stay off social media for a bit, because I was over-active!

RITZ galatta with aruna YOUR SON IS ON THE VERGE OF DEBUTING IN MOVIES. YOUR DAUGHTER JUST GOT MARRIED. BUT YOUR ‘MARKET’ IS ONLY GROWING BIGGER. WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT AND HOW ARE YOU DOING IT? I have a process as to how I work. Or at least I used to. When I get in to a movie, I will be completely obsessed with it - fully immersed. I would not think about anything else. At the shooting spot I won’t take any calls, friends and family won’t visit me there and I just won’t listen to other stories. Only after the movie is over and the promotions are over will I listen to another script. But what happens, most of the time people come to me with just a knot - a story idea, which means it has to be developed into a script. By the time we arrive at something, six months have gone by. Then I would take another six months to prep for the role. In the bargain I would have lost a year. I soon realised that I did not want to do this. I did not need to follow this process. Why can’t I listen to a story while I am acting in a movie? That way by the time I’m done with one movie, the next will be ready and I can keep moving. This realisation has changed my approach and I am loving it!

HOW ARE YOU DOING IT ALL? I had this golden period in my career. I did Dhool, Saamy, Pithamagan and Anniyan all within a time span of one and a half years. That was amazing. And I strongly believe that I can repeat that. I know I can. And just knowing that this is possible, that I can once more create that kind of cinema, excites me. Seeing how my fans celebrate every movie of mine, has made me want to take up more projects. Why make them wait? So when Hari told me he had a good story for a sequel to Saamy, I thought why not. He told me the story and I agreed and we got started. Dhruva Natchathiram is Gautham Menon’s ‘dream project’. It’s got an international flavour to it. I am so happy we finally got to work together. As for Mahavir Karna... well, that is just a god-send. It’s going to be made on a 300 crore budget. Only the crème de la crème of Indian cinema will be cast in it. That’s the only one that’s probably going to take a while to get ready for, but it’s absolutely worth it. THESE MOVIES AND THESE DREAMS, DON’T THEY TIRE YOU AS YOU AGE? You must never let age get to you! The minute you start thinking that you are too old to do something, you get

old! It’s all in the mind. I even told one of my friends who is almost my age, to please not say she has to slow down because she is old now. She was making me feel old too! Age is just a number and it can’t touch you if you don’t let it. I am very positive. I feel like I can do anything and I will. AND WE ABSOLUTELY WANT HIM TO! LADIES

DAY OUT!

From time immemorial, there has been a myth that women aren’t ‘good drivers’. Though it has been proven wrong time and again, when it comes to driving luxury vehicles, we find the number of lady drivers dwindling. BMW Platino Classic decided to bust this myth by inviting a team of women to the special BMW Range drive on a 50km scenic route from Kochi to Alappuzha! RITZ catches up with some of the lucky ladies who recount their fun day out!

Text: RIYA SONNY DATSON PARVATHY CHANKRAMATH is a fashion designer from Thrissur who has boutiques in Calicut and Kochi. She drives from Kochi to Calicut all by herself. “I love long drives and have a weakness for sporty cars!” she admits. The BMW Range drive was her first outing where she experienced the driving comfort of the entire BMW fleet. “It was wonderful and I enjoyed every moment of it. I drove six different models and I must admit that I was impressed. I love their sporty look and the power of the vehicle is amazing. What I liked most was that the driving expert explained every little feature about the car in simple terms. Typically while judging a vehicle, I would consider only the driving comfort and its beauty but this was very enlightening.” When asked about the most memorable moment, she says, “We were a group of 15 ladies and it was great interacting with them and participating in the games. At the end of the event, I was awarded the ‘Best Driver Award’. That would definitely be one moment I will never forget!”

As we drove, it almost felt as though we were floating on the road.” Best Take away of the entire drive? “I drove all the different BMW models all the way from Kochi to Marari. Although we own an Audi, my husband always had apprehensions about letting me drive, but the BMW range drive gave me so much confidence that the very next day, I convinced him to let me drive our Audi,” she says triumphantly.

what was most amazing was the fact that it was the first time BMW Platino Classic had organised a ‘Women’s Only’ car rally in Asia. They organised a fleet of about 15 cars - all driven by women. Tell us about your first book, ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’. It’s always been my passion to be an author. ‘Blood, sweat and tears’ is my first book about a Ballerina’s life. We hear that your next project is a Trilog y. Give us a sneak peek into the story. Dual Dragoned Throne is my upcoming fantasy novel. It is the first in a fantasy trilogy. The story is going to have a lot of magic,

Are these pads more expensive? No, it’s not true that biodegradable pads are more expensive. A pack of 8 pads cost ` 40 which I think is pretty much the same as plastic pads but it is eco-friendly! Where do you buy these pads from? Saathipads.com is a nice website to shop from. The pads that are available are made from natural banana fibre. Can you tell us five steps to make our environment a better place? Well, the first step would be to segregate your waste at home. Second would be to recycle paper, plastic and cardboard waste. The third thing we could do would be composting all food waste. We can easily buy a composting machine online from dailydump.org or similar websites and get started. We need to be conscious about the waste that we generate, try to reuse, reduce and recycle as much as possible. And the fifth would be to keep the environment and city clean. It’s really sad to see people litter and spit on the road. There is a need to spread the awareness.

sword fights, dragons, adventure and many exciting characters in it. What is Revive and Restore all about? Revive and Restore is a cleanliness and waste management movement that was started by me and my friends. I am using the hashtag, #Reviveandrestore on social media to make people conscious about how they can manage and recycle their waste, create compost from their food waste and basically, reduce waste to have a cleaner environment and city – the city that we all love, Chennai! A lot of people who are already recycling their wastes are a part of this movement. It’s an exciting group initiative that involves the people of the city. You have been advocating the use of Eco-friendly Sanitary Napkins. Tell us about the initiative. I have been using eco-friendly sanitary pads for many months now and I will never use plastic pads again. I am hoping that I can make more women aware about the benefits of using these biodegradable pads. There are brands like Saathi and Anandi that make these pads. They are completely biodegradable and it helps to reduce the landfill to a great extent, unlike the plastic pads that lead to mountains of waste! February 2018 RITZ

flying THE

ELEPHANT

From lush green fields, beautiful backwaters to exotic spices, God’s Own country is unique, rich and vibrant in its resources. Quite naturally, its pulsating beauty reverberates into its traditions, culture and language as well. Viakerala celebrates its roots through its products that are reminiscent of Kerala’s typography and rich heritage. RITZ is in conversation with the mastermind behind the brand that is taking Kerala across the globe, Theresa Joseph George!

Interview: RIYA SONNY DATSON What inspired you to start Viakerala? I have been working in Kerala for 15 years now and I noticed that tourists or friends from abroad have a ‘Bollywood’ inspired perception of India. But down south, I don’t think Bollywood has so much of an influence, at least not until recently. Being a graphic designer with a specialisation in typography, my work deals with identity design. So I felt there was a vacuum, a space for this kind of expression, an identity that we could relate to in our everyday life and not just for festivals. I started to question my own identity or roots and that’s when the idea of setting up a brand was born. Viakerala is a modern take on what already exists as Kerala’s identity through a range of products that tells our story. Having been outside of Kerala during your childhood, how acquainted are you with the language? I’m from Kochi but I did most of my schooling in Yercaud. I remember

26 RITZ February 2018

coming to Kerala only during vacations, so I lost touch with the language but the nostalgia always remained. While traveling, the one thing I distinctly remember is that, the minute you cross the border, you immediately know that you have entered Kerala - not just because of the greenery or the landscape but also because of the visual impact, the curvy typography of the Malayalam language which is on every wall or building. I feel, being a literate state, everyone uses the language and script to communicate - be it political propaganda, movie and product promotions, the language is everywhere! It has very much become a part of our identity and day to day living. After returning to Kochi and settling here, I have revisited this notion of Kerala through its visual impact.

What is your brand philosophy? Even before we started as a physical entity, we had decided that any product, by default, has to be inspired by Kerala, it will be from here and made here - the process should have

RITZ spotlight

‘Kerala’ in it. And that’s exactly what you find in our product range. Majority of our products are made locally, except T-shirts because we don’t have such a unit here. But the message on the T-Shirt would reflect a ‘Kerala’ idea. Using the Malayalam letter form as the design element in the entire product range is something new and what I have found is that once people see our product, they never forget us because it is so unique

There is a strong social responsibility element in your brand… Yes, like the name suggests, Viakerala products are ‘via’ Kerala. We get the stationary printed locally and bound by smaller vendors here. Bags and toys are all hand stitched by self-help groups of women. We train them and supply the raw materials. They give us the products at a service charge. So we are imparting a skill and empowering them financially too.

a part of someone else’s name. I think it’s a great word to describe the identity of a Malayalee! We also have stationary, handloom bags, jewellery, posters, toys and ceramic products. Price range: Starting from ` 100 upto ` 3000

been handed down for generations. So we took ideas from literature that dated back to a 100 years and each artist interpreted it visually through posters or canvases that were specific to the Kerala scenario. Essentially, we tried to bring in different perspectives in the same thread.

Your logo has a Flying Elephant… The Elephant is again an indispensable symbol of Kerala and we find it in most of our Government emblems or signage. As Malayalis, we would have seen the elephant atleast once if not more in our lifetime as it’s so much a part of our environment. On the same lines, we have tried to create a brand that is not anything new, it is very close to our heart and identity - just that it has taken wings! A new or contemporary perspective to what already exists.

What has been your biggest challenge? Getting skilled manpower, be it designers or workmanship is a challenge. Keeping up with the philosophy of making every product here is not an easy choice either. It is very difficult to ensure that we get a timely delivery of the products. What was the turning point when you decided to enter the glam industry and why? While in my growing up years, there was never an iota of a doubt in my heart that this is where I belonged. Like a lot of people growing up in the 90’s meant being in awe of actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Karishma Kapoor to name a few. I would typically be aping their dance moves within the four walls of my room, standing in front of the mirror. Thankfully, my parents were always supportive. The only deal they made with me was that I will first complete my education and then I could continue to pursue my passion in full fledged manner. So I continued managing academics and indulged myself in making my craft better. Any experience or something memorable you would like to share from the movie shoot of MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and the feedback you received after the release? To be honest, it was dream come true to work with Neeraj Pandey. I admire his body of work immensely. The best part about shooting was that as actors he completely left us to our own creative discretion. He wanted us to bring our own essence into the characters and not dictate how it should be played. Though I was showered with appreciation post the release of the film, my favourite would probably have to be from my co actor, Sushant Singh Rajput. There’s a scene in the film where he is proposing to me over a phone call. The scene had been shot separately and only upon watching the whole film did we see each other’s part. He texted me saying that had he seen my performance in that particular role first hand, he would have been able to perform even better. As an actor you are only as good as your co actor so this was a huge compliment in itself. Another moment of appreciation I can recount is of the aced filmmaker Raju Hirani, who appreciated my work and loved my performance. Besides my many

fans who have loved my work so far. How was your experience working in Machine and Fugly? I owe my basic schooling about film making and acting to Fugly. It was my first time facing the camera for a movie hence it was the best platform to learn about even the most basic activities that goes on, on a film set. Though the movie was not a huge hit at the box office, it was a personal success for me and it also made realise that the ups and downs are a part of the industry. In a way it helped me to become stronger and toughened me preparing me to take on more challenges. Working with the director duo, Abbas Mastan was an incredible experience. They are not just great filmmakers but also humble human beings I have crossed paths with. I have always been passionate about dancing and in my film Machine I got a chance to have my own dance number and that too on Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast, one of the most popular songs of the 90’s. So it goes without saying that both the movies are close to my heart. How did the shoot for Bharat Ane Nenu go and when is the film releasing? Anything that you can share on your role or the storyline and your experience acting with Mahesh Babu? Bharat Ane Nenu directed by Siva Koratala is my first outing in the Telegu industry. I am extremely humbled at being given such a huge opportunity for my first foray in Tollywood. Working with Mahesh Babu Sir and the whole team is nothing short of an honour. It is due to release on April 27, 2018. Initially I had my apprehensions about the language because it’s completely new for me. But the whole team is so encouraging that it has been easier for me to accept the challenge. I had to put in hard work to make sure that I didn’t use a prompter and got the accent and tonality of the language right. Mahesh plays a chief minister and I’m his love interest in the film.

He is a very humble person in real life. I’m eagerly awaiting the film’s release and the audience’s reaction towards the performance. You’re also on board another Tollywood project with Boyapati Sreenu opposite Ram Charan. When does the shoot commence? It’s a huge honour for me to have just signed the film with Boyapati Sreenu opposite Ram Charan. I am looking forward to starting the shoot soon. The south-Indian industry has been very welcoming to me and that by itself is a humbling experience. Also tell us about Love and Lust with Karan Johar and Prabhudeva's next? The character I play in Love and Lust by Karan Johar is by far my personal favourite in the short career span I have had till now. I'll be seen in a different light by the audience so I will not talk too much about it and I hope I manage to give them a good surprise, while keeping upto the expectations of my fans. Who are your favourite stars down South and what kind of roles excite you? There are quite a few, but I recently watched Arjun Reddy and Vijay Deverakonda, who are both outstanding actors and I loved their performance in the movie. I am spending more time watching various movies and our regional industries are flourishing with the best of the stories and storytellers. Right now in the space I am in, the roles that are coming my way are extremely exciting. I can only hope to continue to work with enriching co stars and movie makers. You have bagged some prestigious banners from among the many stars struggling to find a footing. Any more directors on your wish list? I feel that cinema is a director’s medium and I am extremely grateful for the kind of directors I have already worked with and who were kind enough to have chosen me. I always had a wish list of directors I wanted to work with and by God’s grace I have managed February 2018 RITZ

to work with a few of them such as Neeraj Pandey, Karan Johar and Abbas Mastan. There are more I would love to work with and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’m thankful that my career has begun on a good note and I see a very steady graph from here. What are your fitness and beauty secrets? I love kickboxing and I've resumed my training for kathak every morning. I prefer functional training and believe whether you are an actor or not, fitness should be a part of everyone’s lifestyle. My three go to’s are drinking a lot of water, a sun block and making sure to wipe off every inch of make up before going to bed. What's your personal style statement? The clothes are always an extension of my personality. I always tend to pick my clothes depending on how I feel at that moment and of course the basic rule for me is that it should be comfortable. What are your other passions besides acting? I actually love to paint when I have the time off. I am also passionate about dancing, swimming and I’m also a fairly good bathroom singer (she laughs). What's in store for 2018 for you and what are your future plans ahead? My first Telugu film Bharat Ane Nenu with Mahesh Babu that releases in April 2018 will be a huge moment for me. I am extremely excited and eagerly waiting to start working on my second film in the Telugu industry as well. I hope to continue learning, working on more projects and growing through these opportunities.

The best compliment you've received so far? When my directors appreciate my work, it gives me the biggest high, because that means I've brought alive their story and vision.

RAPID FIRE What's in your handbag? My glares, a bottle of water and fruits. One thing you can't do without? Unfortunately my cell phone Your current car? BMW Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Doing many more films and entertaining the audience. The worst pick up line used on you? Sadly no one's used a pick up line on me.

What's your dream man like? Loyal, self-made and must have a great sense of humour! What do you think of award nights? Great for those who win and fun to perform at! If not cinema, what would you have been? Can't imagine myself as anything else, but an actor, as this has been my long cherished dream ever since my childhood days. Your biggest learning in the short time that you have been in the glam world? Talent, determination and hard work speak volumes. February 2018 RITZ

THE POWER GAME Gold at the Commonwealth Games and representing India at the Olympics, badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa is taking it all in her stride, one serve at a time. Turning Point:

I was always into sports which made my foundation strong. I performed well at the Junior levels and was en route to make it to the Senior Team. One of my biggest wins was winning the Commonwealth Games in 2010 (Gold Medal in Women's Doubles with Jwala Gutta). That was followed by a Bronze Medal at the World Championships in 2011.

Motivational force:

I started off playing for fun, mainly because I was super-energetic as a kid and my parents thought it would be best if my energies were transpired in playing a sport. That's how they put me into playing Badminton. It interested me and as I started playing competitive Badminton in the State and National Levels and my performances kept improving. After which I made it to the Indian team and am currently representing India, internationally. I was Commonwealth Games 2010 Gold Medallist (Women's Doubles and Team Event), World Championships 2011 Bronze Medallist in Women's Doubles, Commonwealth Games 2014 Silver Medallist and represented India at the Olympics 2012 and 2016.

Position of Power: The practice keeps me busy and the sport takes me to places across India and abroad. I do take out time to unwind as a team and as an individual. Challenges: In the initial days, my parents did

all the struggling of handling my brother and me, putting us into sports and keeping up with the schedule needed for fitness sessions, practice and school. They are the main reason I’m here today.

Bengaluru Matters: The weather in Bengaluru is one of the best! Also, it is the closest city to my hometown Coorg. Bengaluru has most of my closest friends, including the cats and dogs on all the streets where my homes here have been over the years.

STARTING YOUNG

Model and anchor turned social media manager for the country’s oldest political party, Elixir Nahar talks to RITZ on how she’s achieved all this at a young age of 23. Turning Point:

I was 16 when I started modelling, so I used to be the youngest at fashion shows. It prompts you to mature a lot faster and hold your own, as you are constantly interacting with people who are older. Modelling also enforced a lot of discipline and focus on exercise, eating right, skin and hair care, dressing well, learning makeup, and being polished and well groomed.

Position of Power: While modelling was fun and helped build my confidence, I wanted to do something that allowed more creativity. Prasad Bidapa used to let me host some shows alongside him and I found that I loved talking in front of an audience. But I’ve always had a knack for social media and have been on Twitter since I was 14. After an open letter I wrote went internationally viral, it widened my areas of interest. When I got the opportunity I took it up to build my political acumen with India’s oldest political party. Challenges: The role came to me after I had finished a stint as an anchor/producer with national television in Mumbai. Divya Spandana (actor Ramya), who had taken over Social Media & Digital Communications at INC, asked me to be a part of the new team she was putting together, that entailed a move to Delhi. I moved there for six months. Adapting to the requirements of the role was the challenging part. Political social media in Delhi is a different ball-game altogether. I had to keep abreast of India and the world. Also, working for the Opposition means you have to be reactive, as well as set the agenda. Motivational force: Being one of the youngest to work with some of the country’s most powerful people, while dealing with the challenges of living alone was a learning curve, but I told myself that there’s enough time ahead for fun and I have to focus on my work. For now I’m back in Bengaluru and am looking at helping out in the Karnataka elections in a different capacity, as well as focus on some of my other projects. I’m passionate about presenting and anchoring. I’ve already started as a sports presenter for Bengaluru Football Club and will also be hosting at Vh1 Supersonic again.

Bengaluru Matters: Just the comfort that knowing wherever I go or whatever I’m doing, I can always come home to Bengaluru and nothing will ever change. It’s where I was born and bred, it has my family, my school, my college and my friends. It has shaped me into who I am as a person.

I started doing quite a few assignments Position of Power: I’ve walked the right after and that’s when I decided to ramp for some of the topmost designers. give modelling a shot. I also did a small role in a Bollywood film recently. There is a fair bit of work Motivational force: I have this zest and traveling lined up this year and it to keep doing better in life. Kingfisher looks like a good year, but let’s see how had auditioned me the previous year and much more this year has in store for me! that’s why they wanted me this year. I’m sure it must have been a very difficult

Bengaluru Matters: Bengaluru

FRESH AS THE MORNING DEW Her indepth knowledge, research acumen and entrepreneurship skills led her to create a unique brand. Mitali Tandon who developed a drink to beat your hangover blues at the young age of 23, now has a young workforce of 40 plus employees and is spreading her wings across India. Turning Point:

In school, I was part of the Young Enterprise Program, where I was shortlisted and visited other young entrepreneurs in Seattle and in college I started two properties, Shop for A Cause; that brought together products that were curated and sold/donated for a cause and a live cook-off event called Burger Riot. After having tried my hand at traditional 9-5 jobs, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone.

Motivational force: I was 23 when I joined the R&D team at Sericare (parent company of Morning Fresh) doing intensive research, brain storming and purging the extensive information and insights we have into silk protein, sericulture and related industries. Morning Fresh was born through our research discovering the ability of silk protein to boost liver health. With a team of PhDs in bio technology and chemistry we created this product 100% made in India, for young and urban Indians to help them stay fit, healthy, detoxed and hangover free. 3 years, 1 patent, 30K + bottles, mistakes, successes, collaborations and learnings later, I am 26 now and ready to conquer! Challenges: I learnt very early on that there was

nothing about this industry or business that was going to be predictable and we have to adapt, change and improvise. My day starts at 6 am to squeeze in a quick work out before the madness hits. I love making todo lists, so by breakfast I have a long task list. I use time in traffic to listen to podcasts, stay abreast with industry news and make work calls. I visit partner outlets where we might have an event planned and often great collaboration ideas can happen over some good craft beer!

40 RITZ February 2018

Mitali Tandon Position of Power: Deciding to be your own boss has its perks and drawbacks. We are working on ensuring Morning Fresh is easily available online and offline in all major metro cities, and are already in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and moving to other cities rapidly. We also have a number of export opportunities that will be furthered this year, as our product is unique, 100% made in-house and is patented for its formulation. Bengaluru Matters: Bengaluru city, my home with over 15+ microbreweries and counting, the city has a rhythm unlike any other. It's helped us test the market with Morning Fresh as customers are well-read, open and experimental. The start-up culture is active in the city, which allows you to connect with likeminded entrepreneurs, exchange ideas and share learnings.

IN THE NAME OF

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR, WHEN ROMANCE REIGNS SUPREME. CANDLELIT RESTAURANT DINNERS, CANDY, CARDS, GIFTS, FLOWERS. ENDLESS EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE. Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I’m all for celebrating love – but strangely enough, there aren’t too many like me left. The thought process around me seems to be so different from mine, that I am left questioning myself at times. Even though Valentine’s Day is extremely popular with the youth, the generation doesn’t quite believe in love anymore. We belong to that set of people who are on multiple dating apps, randomly hooking up and are ever-so-spoilt with choice. Commitment is a phobia and forever seems too boring. We’re all borderline dysfunctional and seem to be quite proud of it. But on the other hand, in the middle of this, there are still a few, who have managed to keep their sanity in place – those few who believe in the ‘happily ever after’. They were not scared of tying the knot as they didn't think marriage would tie them up.

Keeping the spirit of February 14 alive, we picked a few of those couples – who are our ray of hope at the end of this dark tunnel. Read on ahead, to know them better and understand their relationships a bit more...

TAKING THE

REINS Born to a hotelier’s family in Delhi, he was always fascinated by the hospitality industry. With his father being the Chef at the Oberoi and then the Leela, he got the opportunity to travel extensively around India and abroad. The fascination gradually grew into inspiration and then, became his passion. After completing his degree in hotel management, he joined the ITC group and his 16 year journey in the food and beverage sector and later, operations and admin, led him through wonderful properties in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Rajasthan and finally the ITC Grand Chola, Chennai. Being passionate about new learnings and experiences, he has never shied away from venturing into new horizons. So when the Marriott group beckoned, he decided to take the plunge yet again! RITZ is in conversation with Sumeet Suri, the newly appointed General Manager at the Kochi Marriott!

Text: RIYA SONNY DATSON 56 RITZ February 2018

What is your perception about the Marriott brand? I have heard a lot about the brand and now, I am experiencing it personally. As I understand, it is the world’s largest hotel company and now with the integration of Marriott and Starwood, it is exciting to see it growing by leaps and bounds across the world! When it comes to running such a large organisation, I think it is fascinating to understand the processes involved. I think it’s a great learning opportunity not just to understand the process orientation but to ensure that the desired results are achieved. I also find Marriott’s core value of putting people first very exciting. Marriott empowers its associates in decision making and welcomes them into the Marriott family, thereby encouraging them to grow along with the group. As a leader, what are your strategies to motivate your team? I believe in a simple formula. The first one being empowering your team – to

encourage them to take up responsibility and to inculcate an aspiration to grow. Second, would be to ensure open communication, which is very very important. Work life balance is another critical area. Marriott gives a great culture for work life balance which ensures that people don’t get burned out. I believe it is important to have light moments with the team, to spend time with them informally and of course, to challenge them to perform better. What do you think is the one quality required for a hotelier. I would say – Passion and patience. Which would be your favourite department? Having worked in the food and beverage department for the longest time, I have enjoyed it the most. I feel it is a great space for innovation. Early in one’s career, as a restaurant manager, you also become a good sales manager. But I am trying to spend more time now on revenue management and aspects of front office, which I feel is a vital part of business. What is it that you like most about being a hotelier? This industry takes you around the world and I love experiencing new things and meeting people. Every single day is different in this industry and I look forward to each day with its new challenges. What do you think is your biggest challenge? People! It is alarming that today, not all hotel management graduates opt for hotels, most of them move to other industries. Talent is dwindling but the number of hotels are increasing.

Getting quality manpower is the biggest challenge. I think it is important for companies to invest in the right people. What would be your Inspiration? The drive to learn and experience new changes. Ever felt that you were in the middle of a crisis but you came out of it in flying colours? There have been many occasions where I have felt that I am at the end of the tunnel and that there is no way out but something eventually works out. I think, opening a new property is always very challenging. The flavour of facing the challenges and then when it turns out really well is very satisfying. With so many options for guests, what is your strategy to engage them? Great Service and great personalisation. I think Kochi Marriott has been blessed with a great product. Personalisation is a key factor which involves creating great experience and wow moments for guests. Then of course, food and beverage is a great space for innovation where people get to experience new tastes and cuisines not available here. The Marriott brand has a good loyalty base as well and I think guests today opt for the best loyalty benefits, which the group has an edge over. What are your interests outside of work? Watching movies, reading, spending quality time with family and traveling. I prefer short holidays now and wherever I am, I like to explore the place completely. How is your first experience in Kerala? Kochi seems to have an interesting mix of cosmopolitan and culture. I would like to explore the cultural aspect and know more about it. I am looking forward to exploring the beaches, the offbeat holiday destinations and of course, going on long drives.

XANDARI HARBOUR

Close to the Dutch Palace in Mattanchery was a beautiful waterfront merchant property that once stocked spices and lodged ship captains. Postindependence, the property gradually fell empty and began to deteriorate. But it stood the test of time, until it was bought over by the Muthoot hospitality group, who transformed it into the ‘XandariHarbour’. Nestled in the busy market street, this 16 room property has simplicity at its soul with it’s name ‘Xandari’ meaning elegance, simplicity and tranquillity. The ancient go-down has now been restored as the popular restaurant, ‘Restaurant 51’, that serves Malabar Soul Food, which essentially brings together Indian and Mediterranean cuisines. The farm to table philosophy adopted by the group focusses on using fresh supplies of fruits and vegetables, animal livestock and dairy products from its backwater farm property. Their alliance with the local fishing community has brought about the sea to table extension of this philosophy. The infinity pool right at the centre of Xandari Harbour, overlooks the sea and is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the sunset in the evening. Watch out for Xani, the colourful rickshaw that has been parked in the courtyard to engage guests! The giftshop, Viakerala offers ethnic and handcrafted products that serve as perfect souvenirs. THE VIP PROTECTOR

RITZ corridors of power

ANAND MOHAN, IPS BY SANJAY PINTO

Y

ears ago, a swashbuckling journalist tried to barge into the Rashtrapati Bhavan without an entry pass. But this dashing young officer of the Delhi Police stood his ground and did not buckle under pressure, as the names of almost the entire Cabinet of Ministers were dropped by the mediaperson. It was just one of many piquant situations that Anand Mohan found himself in throughout his almost decade long innings with the Delhi Police. There was no dearth of VIPs in the national capital who would brazenly flaunt their 'don't you know who I am' attitude. Without getting hot under the collar, this 1994 batch IPS officer would “remain calm and like a rock”. A brilliant student, Anand was among the three IPS officers that the History Department of Loyola College used to proudly hold up as role models for their freshers, year after year. The other two are the present Commissioner of Police, Chennai Dr.A.K.Viswanathan and Inspector General of Police Davidson Asirvatham. Post Loyola, came a predictable jump to the premier Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for a Masters in International Relations, followed by a semester of M Phil before the Civil Services beckoned in 1994, with a berth in the IPS, assigned to the Union Territory cadre.

ANAND MOHAN, IPS – Inspector General of Police – CISF (Southern Sector) 64 RITZ February 2018

Quite like a Bollywood movie, Anand's first posting was as Assistant Commissioner of Police, of the frenetic commercial hub - Connaught Place. If this was baptism by fire, confirmation of more sensitive posts came in the form of Additional Deputy Commissioner – New Delhi and then as Deputy Commissioner of the Prime Minister's Security. “This was a zero error job” where he had to oversee and coordinate the highest security apparatus covering the visits of “more than a hundred Heads of States” at all the PM's events. Anand's three year stint as the

Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, was among his “toughest” assignments. As Jantar Mantar, Parliament and India Gate fell under his jurisdiction, “there was not a day without some demonstration or the other” and with the “everyone is someone” syndrome, that his tenure was relatively 'incident free', came as a relief. From VIP movements to the murky terrain of crime, Anand had to tackle criminal gangs operating from the Western Uttar Pradesh side, as the Deputy Commissioner of Police – East Delhi. Kidnapping for ransom was prevalent. A two year old child had been kidnapped and whisked away to Uttar Pradesh. “I formed 5 special teams for the hunt. That was the time my dad was undergoing an operation at Escorts Hospital and I was shuttling between the hospital and office. It turned out that the kid's mother was a staff nurse with friends at Escorts Hospital. When the nurses got to know that I was the officer investigating the case, they requested me to take special care.” The case was cracked within a week and the child was reunited with the parents. “The look on the faces of the parents and the rescued child was unforgettable and gave me immense saitisfaction.”

General of Police of the Andamans. There was also a big “humanitarian crisis” as Rohingyas, who had set sail from Burma, were left to drift into the Andamans by the Thai Navy. We had to set up a camp and they were repatriated through embassy channels.”

As he left Delhi, Anand headed to the former French colony of Pondicherry as the Senior Superintendent of Police (Law & Order). There was a live encounter with a gang of hardened criminals. “The encounter was covered live on TV and my wife was watching the action with bated breath, terrified with every shot fired. The cameraman of the tv channel was right behind me! The criminals ultimately surrendered. We had recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition including about a hundred gelatin sticks.”

Anand's deputation with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) began with manning the Training Centre at Arakonnam as the Deputy Inspector General of Police and later as the DIG of Airports in the South Zone. “We had to tackle several hoax calls without taking any chances and also not triggering panic among passengers.” On his promotion as the Inspector General of Police, Anand was transferred to Mumbai in charge of the Western Sector of the CISF. Nuclear installations and other sensitive projects in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh came under his sway. Currently posted as the Inspector General of Police – CISF (Southern Sector) he is now at the helm of security of the Madras High Court, Sea Ports, Coal & Lignite Mines, Space Installations and Steel Plants.

Coastal Security and the “arrest of foreign poachers who were trading in exotic marine species like sea cucumbers” was part of Anand's next stint as the Deputy Inspector

Once an opening batsman for the Delhi Police Team, this former champion cricketer from Santhome High School in Chennai, is open to conducting a friendly cricket match

with lawyers of the High Court his men protect. Introduced to marathons by his former senior colleague in the CISF – Dr. Jayant Murali, the present Additional Director General of Police, CB CID, Tamil Nadu, Anand, after two marathons under his belt, is dusting his keds for an upcoming marathon in February. Work aside, his priority is to cut his teeth in family outings with his dentist wife – Sangeetha and play doting dad to Saina and Saiyansh. But whether he is protecting and securing our vital installations or chilling out at home, Anand Mohan ensures that he is always on his toes. To let his light shine. Like a true blue Loyolite.

RITZ POINT BLANK

LIGHTS, CAMERA... SCREAM! BY SANJAY PINTO

W

hen the usual suspects are paraded on prime time tv debates, on which I too figure, not as an anchor anymore, but a panelist, I cannot help wondering if we can also form a cricket team! If two is company, and three a crowd, then would ten 'experts' and spokespersons with an anchor become a mob? Having been on national television for two decades myself, I find this template a turn off. For discerning viewers, at least. Not just the sheer number of panelists popping out of boxes on the screen like pigeon holes but a veritable slanging

66 RITZ February 2018

match that national discourse has degenerated into. My professor of jurisprudence at Law School used to harp on three sides to every dispute – yours, the other party and the right side! The idea to have so many voices is to make the debate look holistic, comprehensive, dynamic and all that. But if you dissect the show, you will realise that it's not a case of 'more the merrier' but 'more the drearier'. On a one hour show, on Prime Time, commercial breaks would usually account for roughly ten minutes. That leaves you with fifty minutes of talk time. Of this, knock off about seven minutes for the show sting, preamble (which can sometimes be a long sermon) headlines, introduction of guests and teasers. Out of the forty odd minutes, questions from the anchor and pontification and sound bites and footage of stories may run into another fifteen minutes. You are then left with about half an hour. On any panel, at least two 'experts' will be more than pedantic and get personal with each other, eating into half the time available. The remaining eight guests who sit patiently for their turn, the only sign of distress in the form of the finger going up like a cricket umpire, will have hardly fifteen minutes to state their views, at an average of less than two minutes each. There are times when extremely civil panelists who do not take the anchor's cue: “I'm opening up the debate” or are schooled to rudely interrupt others, don't get a chance to have their say at all. On even the most contentious topic, three or four panelists should do. That will do justice to their presence and time. But it's an ingredient of an orderly debate. Is that out of the studio window? When was the last time you saw a mature debate minus the brazen display of lung power? And guess what? The ratings for these prime time slanging matches are much higher than the other time bands when regular news stories are aired. It proves that like the average Indian voter has become corrupt, the average tv news viewer has become a tad voyeuristic. So when anchors rile up panelists and tempers run high, the viewers seem to lap up what observers may dismiss as a 'circus'. Often, the outrage is an act to win eyeballs. Few believe me when I tell them that some of the most vociferous anchors, who happen to be my former colleagues, are actually soft spoken otherwise! While I usually keep calm, avoid speaking out of turn and have always believed in logic, fact and wit to counter arguments, I confess to having lost my cool a couple of times when uncouth speakers have tried to interject and drown my voice. I guess that Voltaire gem: “I do not agree with what you have to say but will defend to death your right to say it” is lost on these souls who seem intolerant to any contrarian view.

As a television news channel Editor not too long ago, here's an inside perspective. It's a lot easier and cheaper to put together an hour long live debate than to commission ten special reports from across the country, requiring reporters to fan out on ground zero to get you real news. In this age of large scale retrenchment and cost cutting and the new concept of 'mojo' – mobile journalism, where a tv correspondent plays solitary reaper – reporting, shooting with a selfie stick, editing and uplinking, the jobs of camerapersons, editors and broadcast engineers, and indeed OB Vans and Bureau offices are sadly on the chopping block. Forget the cost of travel and shooting and editing news stories to make up an hour. It requires a whole gamut of news meetings, vetting of scripts, editing, inserting graphics and other post production work. All you need for a live debate is a controversial topic centred around a news development, quick research by your team, a few calls from the Guest Desk to panelists and presto, you have a show! This disturbing template on national television - of a big group of panelists screaming their guts out, has spread like a virus to regional channels. Some of these local anchors seem to fashion themselves after their national counterparts. That said, there are honourable exceptions among channels, anchors and panelists. You don't have to shout to be heard. Often, folks raise their voices when they have little or nothing to say. There is more to an informed debate than belting out a few punchlines that the channels' social media desk can tweet out. The patience to listen to another view, the grace to accept a misconception and the courage to be politically accurate and not politically correct is what distinguishes a good debater from a demagogue. But who cares for old fashioned decency when TRPs are the bottomline? That's the new low. Dancers pep up the mood at IKF 2018

AHMEDABAD: UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE CITY If Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat, Ahmedabad is its heart. Plonked in the heart of the state, this city never ceases to amaze and enliven your senses. More than 600 years old, this walled city of Ahmedabad on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river, founded by Ahmed Shah was recently declared India’s first World Heritage City and aren’t we proud of it. The city presents a rich architectural heritage from the Sultanate period and still retains much of its old world charm so evocative of Ahmedabad with a good blend of modern development and infrastructure. The NID Ground at Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad came alive with thousands of kites at the 29th International Kite Festival – IKF 2018 from January 7 to 14, 2018. Vibrant hues and eye-catching and innovative kites took to the skies, signifying unity in diversity, filling the venue with a festive mood from dawn till dusk. Watching not just Gujaratis but people from across the world come together to lift their kites aloft and watch them soar high during Uttarayan, Makar Sankranti, or Kite Festival is a treat for sore eyes. Food and Craft Bazaar and cultural dances added to the fervor of IKF.

SABARMATI ASHRAM – The moment you step into the home of Gandhi, where he lived from 1917 until 1930 with his wife Kasturba, you’re filled with a sense of unflappable poise and calm. The peaceful retreat on the banks of the River Sabarmati away from the bustling city life takes you back in time when the Mahatma’s peaceful protest brought an end to the colonial rule in India. He also started the famous Dandi or Salt March from Sabarmati Ashram. There’s also a museum here where you can see his books, life size artworks, photographs of the Mahatma with his wife, and actual relics like his writing desk and the spinning wheel. ADALAJ STEPWELL – An Indo-Islamic architectural marvel in the village of Adalaj in Gandhinagar. Step five storey’s down the stairs on three sides descending into an octagonal opening supported on eight pillars. Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty of Dandai Desh started the construction and after he was killed, his wife Rani Rudabai agreed to Mahmud Begada’s marriage proposal on the precondition that he would complete making the stepwell. The Rani decided to end her life after the completion of the stepwell

or vav (in Gujarati). Look out for intricate carvings in this water building that was built to collect rain water with erotic scenes, sculptures of a king seated on a stool under parasol, two chauri-bearers in attendance, scenes depicting churning of buttermilk, female dancers and musicians, birds and animals and more. SARKHEJ ROZA, SIDI SAIYYED MOSQUE AND JAMA MOSQUE – A unique Indo-Saracenic architectural style, you will see a fusion of Islamic influences from Persia with indigenous Hindu and Jain features at Sarkhej Roza. The intricately carved jaalis, jharonkhas, arches and domes add to the magnificence of the place. On the day we stopped by at the Roza Complex at Sarkhej built at the advent of Sultanate era by Mohammad Shah, and completed by Qutb'ud-Din Ahmed Shah and Mahmud Begada, there was a Muslim mass marriage going on. If you don’t have much time at hand, do stop by at the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque for a quick look at the famous Tree of Life Jaali or latticework on the semicircular arched windows. Go back in time at Jama Masjid in the old walled city where the tombs of Sultan Ahmed Shah, his son, Mohammed Shah and his grandson, Qutub-Ud-Din Ahmed Shah 2nd are located. BEAUTIFUL BHUJ: VILLAGE HOPPING IN QUEST FOR ART AND CRAFT From Ahmedabad drive 350 km to reach Bhuj, famous for several handicrafts villages - Gandhi nu gaam, Bhujodi, Hodka, Dhamadka, Ludiya and Khavda. Kutch is the Mecca of the vibrant Kutchi handicrafts and the entire families from grandparents to grandchildren can be spotted engrossed in embroidery work. The skills of these traditional handicrafts have been passed down from generation to generation. Ludiya might seem like a staid hamlet at first sight, but this humble village near Bhuj in Banni district of Kutch is home to

some of the most talented craftswomen adept at Kutchi embroidery, accessories, terracotta pottery, lacquerware, and home decor. The Khatri family at Nirona village is taking the legacy of Rogan Art forward. The humble village earned its share of fame when our Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a Rogan Art painting created by Abdulgafur D Khatri to US President Barack Obama in 2014. The art originated from Persia and Pakistan 300 years ago and is practiced only by Gafurbhai’s family on bags, wall hangings, sarees, dress materials, jackets and stoles. Besides the colour pigments, castor oil is used and requires a unique technique of handcrafting each of the breathtaking pieces. On our drive we saw endless plantations of castor bean plants flanking the highway, from which they make the oil for Rogan Art. Also take a lesson or two in Copper Bell Art making from the Luhar family. Husen Luhar has been handcrafting these copper bells all his life and till today at the age of 70, he’s going strong; beating iron into the shape of a bell, joining the ends, coating each of them and then burning it in a woodfire place with a mud casing, resulting in a beautiful copper bell. His entire family assists him in this step-by-step process that is a marvel to watch. Also visit Dhamadka village to watch and learn the process of block printing. NOTHING SHORT OF A DREAM: RANN OF KUTCH On your drive from Bhuj to Dhordo to reach the Rann of Kutch you will pass through the spot where the Tropic of Cancer passes through. Because of Dhordo’s close proximity to Pakistan, a permit is required to enter the area, which is available easily. The mere mention of Rann of Kutch conjures one of two things, desert and salt, or even both together. One of the most stunning sights has to be the vast expanse of pristine white sand marshes in the Little Rann of Kutch. The best time to visit the Rann of Kutch is

Sunset and pristine white sands at the White Rann of Kutch make for a picture perfect moment

The tradition of selling handcrafted Kutchi embroidered clothes, fashion accessories and home accesories at the Ludiya village in Gujarat passes from one generation to the other

during full moon as the moonlight on mystical white sands makes it all the more alluring. Stay at the Rann Utsav, Tent City for an experience of a lifetime. You can experience India’s biggest White Rann Desert Festival at Tent City which hosts cultural dances and shows every evening post a lavish traditional Gujarati buffet dinner. Now you know - Kutch nahin dekha toh kuch nahi dekha! WILDLIFE AT ITS BEST: WILD ASS SANCTUARY Open up a bagful of surprises at the Rann of Kutch. We stayed at the Royal Safari Camp, Bajana and drove to the Wild Ass Sanctuary, before sunrise to catch the last population of the Asiatic wild ass roaming free in the cold, arid deserts. Being up, close and personal with the wild ass is an experience in itself. FOOD CHRONICLES: They might sound like tongue twisters but they’re a musttry on every foodies to-do list. Tuck in some fafda, khakra, thepla, khandvi, handvo, sukhdi, panki, khichu, thalipith and dhokla and you won’t be disappointed. A stopover at SaasuJi Dining Hall in Ahmedabad is a must for its mouth-watering and wholesome thali filled with shahi dhokla, patra, methi papad, paneer pasanda, undhiyu,

bataka tameta, bajra na rotla, sitafal basundi and malpua. For your fix of the best of authentic Gujarati snacks also head to Swati Snacks and bite into some flavourful satpadi roti with gatta nu shak. On your highway drive do look out for Chamunda Krupa Restaurant, Maraj that serves a delicious Gujarati thali, fit for the royals. We head back home with memories of soul-satisfying food, precious moments of walking on white sands under the moonlit sky, bagful of shopping from the famous Law Garden and various handicraft villages and promises to come back.
