SCOTLAND

2012

EDINBURGH CASTLE This, our first edition of ABF The Soldiers' Charity (Scotland) newsletter, is our way of keeping in contact with the most important people involved with the charity - YOU. Our newsletter will appear biannually keeping you informed of events and whom is helping where. It is a chance to share fundraising ideas and to let you know how you can get involved. We can also say thanks to those who have given so much of their time and energy to raise the money we need for the charity's work. Some people stand out this time; David Dickson from Ayrshire and David Simpson in Dundee in particular. Inside you will discover how a remarkable young woman raised an amazing amount of money and meet a very brave young man who is a real inspiration to others and an ambassador for The Charity. Enjoy the 1st edition and do give us feedback!

NEW CHARITY TARTAN We hope you like the new tartan which is shown here. Do contact the Edinburgh office if you are interested in getting something made - skirts, kilts, trews, you name it!

REGIONAL ROUND-UP THE WINTER LECTURE Lt Col Dougie Graham, recently CO 2SCOTS, gave the Winter Lecture on his experience commanding the battalion in Afghanistan. Dougie enthralled his audience with the details of the very successful tour, one on which the battalion were lucky to lose no soldiers.

WELCOME ...to our first newsletter. Please read it and pass it on to anyone you think may be interested. Emailing this helps keep costs down, please send us your email address if you have not already done so and your next copy will be electronic. If you prefer a paper copy we shall continue to send you one - please get in touch and let us know what you think of our efforts at keeping you informed. Two new faces joined the staff of the Charity in Scotland this year. Claire Heyes has joined us from working with The Black Watch. As a one-time RN Wren, she is managing to keep the more junior service (Army!) in order. Claire replaces Cathie Davies who retired in April 2011 after 19 years, making her one of the longest serving members of staff in the charity in the UK. We wish Cathie well. Major Charles Dunphie has taken over a new appointment as Assistant Director, Scotland. Charles retired from the Army as an instructor at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in December 2010 after 18 years service in The Royal Green Jackets & The Rifles.

FEATURE PAUL LAMBERT Paul Lambert, the very brave face of ABF The Soldiers' Charity Scotland visited us in the Castle in February. Paul will be helping us now by getting the word out about how we helped him. Thanks and well done Paul.

DUMFRIES BALL Claire Beswick is a very remarkable young woman. When her brother-in-law, Bombardier Stephen Gilbert died of wounds suffered in Afghanistan she decided to do something in his memory. Together with her sister Jackie she organised a Black Tie and Diamonds Ball in Dumfries where she lives and where Stephen was born. The event was a runaway success and raised ÂŁ10,000 for us and ÂŁ4,000 for Stephen's Regiment, 4th Royal Artillery. soldierscharity.org
