Here’s to New Beginnings

I like to think of September as a second new year. For me, the month has always signified new beginnings and opportunities more than January ever could. While I no longer experience the anticipation of a new year at school (although my son soon will) I still like to use this month to challenge myself to be a little better. And what better way to start a fresh than with a makeover? In Fall Refresh (page 75) Viva gives four deserving readers the opportunity to enter September with a new look that is more representative of the way they look and feel inside. Each deserving woman was chosen for her amazing efforts. Whether it was an amazing effort at school, or a single mom opting for a career change, each of these women has made a bold step towards improving her life. Viva wants these women to look just terrific as on the outside. It’s amazing the difference a change in outfit or a hair cut can go in making you feel a whole lot better. So go ahead and treat yourself to a back-to-school outfit, even if it’s been years since you last set foot in a classroom. New beginnings can come at any time of the year (and at any age). Recovering my inner athlete i’ve always loved to run. These days I’m always running

after two young kids. That means less “me time”… and more joint pain. But now I’m in recovery. Thanks to Recovery® by Purica my pain is gone, and my energy is back. I’m jogging again, recovering my “inner athlete.” So I’m a little less stressed… and a lot more who I used to be.

Recommended for anyone with joint pain who wants to feel better than they ever thought possible. Not recommended for people who enjoy pain. We cannot guarantee you will even recognize the much-cooler-you after 30 days. Pure Recovery. Pure Relief. Pure Wellbeing.

www.purica.com This is the fine print. We want you to feel fine. More than fine in fact. Life is so awesome and we want you to feel better than you have ever felt, and then even better than that. And then, even better than that. Sounds like a fine plan?

HOW DO YOU DEFINE BALANCED LIVING?

Nancy Ripton Position at Viva: Guest Editor

On balanced living: Balanced living starts with taking care of yourself. If you’re not happy, healthy and focused nothing else in your life will get the attention it needs. So many women put themselves last, but taking just an hour a day to go for a run, do a yoga class or read a book will actually increase your productivity in other areas of your life. I recently tried to meditate as a result of an article I worked on. I have to admit with three kids and a busy freelance career I haven’t been that successful at sticking to even 10 minutes of silence a day. Buy my guru pointed out that if Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra can make time to mediate for an hour or two a day how can I not find 10 minutes to clear my own brain? Granted Oprah doesn’t have kids, but he does have a point. This September my goal is to set aside 10 minutes a day for silence and solitude. Wish me luck!

Easel of the Future

For the modern artist and tech enthusiast, Margeaux and Walter Kent have designed an iPad easel made out of vintage oak reclaimed from a circa 1800s stock. The two-piece fixture can be secured to a wall or tabletop anywhere in your home and can also be swiveled thanks to the wall mount’s pivot. Every piece is unique, with each marking in the wood telling a story about its pre-easel life. This easel is a minimalist and natureinspired way to blend the old with the new. (Branch, $60)

For a contemporary way to fill that bare spot on your floor or wall try CraftedSystems’ Petal Rug and Wall Hanging. It’s a custom item too, so your rug can be made into a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. (Branch, $140 per square foot)

The Tusk Desk Chair by Earth’s Friend Furniture combines comfort and modern style with eco-friendly materials. Working quickly and carefully, dip each ladyfinger into the coffee and arrange on top of the mascarpone mixture (if the cookie absorbs too much coffee, the texture of the dish will become too soft). 5. Once an even layer of ladyfingers is arranged on top of the mascarpone mixture, spoon the remaining on top and spread out an even layer. 6. Dust with cocoa, cover and allow to sit (refrigerated) for at least four hours.

Beans
A nutrient-rich food, beans contain protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre, antioxidants, iron and important B-complex vitamins. Try adding beans to a wrap, soup, pasta sauce or chilli. Bean dips are a great way to spice up raw veggies for an afterschool snack. Just puree chickpeas, lentils or white kidney beans with some garlic, lemon and extra virgin olive oil for a brain healthy dip.

Berries Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. They ward off damage caused by free radicals and may improve the cognitive function of the brain, improving memory and motor skills. For example, one cup of

sliced strawberries delivers more than a day’s worth of vitamin C. Berries are also a good source of fibre, folate, potassium and manganese – a mineral that maintains healthy bones and helps regulate blood sugar.

Chocolate Yes, eating chocolate can make you smarter! Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than blueberries and these antioxidants protect brain cells from damaging free radicals and improve cognitive function.

Olive Oil Olive oil contains brain-friendly monounsaturated fats that can lower bad (LDL) cholesterol. Extra virgin olive oil is also rich in potent antioxidants called polyphenols that prevent free radical damage to brain cells.

Nuts Walnuts are the top nut for brain health with their high concentration of DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid shown to improve cognitive performance. Just a quarter cup of walnuts provides almost 100 percent the recommended daily intake of DHA. Almonds are a great pick too because they are high in Vitamin E, also shown

Plus, vitamin B-12 and folate found in spinach improve brain health and help maintain cognitive functioning, including memory. Kale is rich in manganese, a trace mineral that helps synthesize fatty acids that are critical to healthy brain function. Try kale chips, and spinach brownies to give kids a nutrient boost in foods they like to eat.

Eggs Just one egg contains an amazing amount of nutrition. With six grams of protein per egg and more than a dozen vitamins and minerals including riboflavin, B12 and folate, they are a rich super food. Eggs are also an excellent source of choline, an important nutrient for brain development.

Grape Juice Look for grape juice blends made with concord grapes. Research shows that the polyphenols from concord grapes can improve the communication between brain cells. The antioxidant rich grape juice improves short-term memory and motor skills.

to improve memory function and make a great midday snack.

Fish Fatty fish are full of essential omega-3 fatty acids and you should aim to eat fish at least twice a week. Omega-3 rich fish such as salmon and mackerel are important for brain development. Your brain is comprised of approximately 60 percent fat. By eating more Omega-3 fats you are providing your brain with the essential fats it needs for optimal functioning.

Whole Grains A simple switch to whole-wheat pasta, whole-grain bread and brown rice can increase brain health. They are filled with vitamins and magnesium, which are important to cognitive health. Whole grains also contain vitamins including folate and B12 that increase memory and regulate energy levels to keep kids alert in class. Add oats and quinoa to your diet for a fibre and protein boost. VM

SOMETIMES YOUR BRAIN TELLS YOU TO STOP

When a long-distance runner approaches the finishing line and suddenly collapses to the ground we assume she has used up all the energy in her muscles. What few people know is that it is likely her brain telling the runner she’s too tired to go on. Researchers have found that serotonin functions as an accelerator when we train but also as a brake when the strain becomes too excessive. Looks like our brain knows how to make us stop when our body has had enough. iStock

Soothing Teas for Kids

Medicinal teas are a natural alternative to medicine for many childhood ailments. Here’s how to tell what type of tea your child needs and learn how to prepare it By Dr. Joyce Johnson BSc, ND TEAS ARE A GREAT HERBAL ALTERNATIVE TO TAKING REGULAR MEDICATION and this is even true for children. Many times, children don’t enjoy taking pills because they have trouble swallowing them. There may be other medications that the child simply doesn’t like the taste of. Luckily, there are a variety of herbal teas that children can take to soothe a variety of ailments.

ECHINACEA AILMENT: COMMON COLD

CHAMOMILE AILMENT: INDIGESTION

One of the first illnesses a child may face is the common cold. For the common cold, Echinacea is a common herb that has been used for centuries. For children, it’s easiest to combine the herb into a tea formula. Echinacea is a flower from the daisy family, and some varieties of Echinacea are used for medicinal reasons; the roots of the flower are what are used to make the tea.

Chamomile has many different uses including helping to ease digestion and stomach gas. Chamomile tea soothes the nervous system to calm children so it can be used with other ailments as well.

TEA TIME Dried Echinacea can be put into a cup, added to a pot of boiling water, and covered for 20 minutes (or prepared tea bags can be used). Lastly, the tea can be strained to remove the roots from the drink. If desired, the tea can be sweetened with a teaspoonful of sugar.

38 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FALL / 2013

TEA TIME Chamomile tea is made from the flowers; specifically, the tea can be made using two or three teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers per cup of hot water. The tea may then steep for up to three minutes, and can be strained through a strainer cup. Many people also like to add some fresh lemon juice or a teaspoon of honey for flavor.

FENNEL AILMENT: INDIGESTION, GAS OR COLIC TEA TIME When making Fennel tea, the seeds are used rather than the roots of the flower of the Fennel plant. To make Fennel tea, one to two teaspoons of whole Fennel seeds can be gently crushed and added to two cups of boiling water. It’s important that the tea is not brewed for any longer than three minutes. After the tea is finished brewing it can then be strained into a cup and allowed to cool until it’s reached

NETTLE AILMENT: ALLERGIES For allergies and to help cleanse the blood and immune system in children, there is a natural herbal tea that will also help with this. TEA TIME The Nettle plant can commonly be found already manufactured as tea bags in many grocery store outlets. However, natural herbal Nettle tea can be made by using fresh Nettle leaves. Also referred to as the Stinging Nettle,

Honey shouldn’t be given to children younger than one year of age a pleasurable drinking temperature. If wanted, this tea may also be sweetened with honey, sugar or other sweeteners.

SLIPPERY ELM AILMENT: SORE THROAT, INDIGESTION, CONSTIPATION OR DIARRHEA MAKING TEA The mucilage gel that is extracted from the underside of the Slippery Elm tree bark is what is used to make the tea with; however, the mucilage gel is obtained in a powder bark form. People may make the Slippery Elm tea by warming some water and adding up to two tablespoons of Slippery Elm bark powder to the water. Then, steep for three to five minutes. To provide a boost in taste, a spoonful of sugar or honey may be added to the tea.

AGRIMONY AILMENT: DIARRHEA, MILD COUGHS OR SORE THROATS Agrimony is also a great anti-inflammation drug, and it is a natural diuretic. Being a natural diuretic, Agrimony is able to help treat kidney or bladder diseases and disorders; this is due to the rich levels of antioxidants. TEA TIME Typically, the Agrimony tea is made using multiple parts of the plant including the flowers, stems, and roots. The Agrimony tea is made by placing one or two teaspoons of dried leaves and flowers into a cup of boiling water. The leaves and flowers should be allowed to steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, it may be allowed to cool and sweetened with honey.

these plants have a natural defense of stinging animals and humans by way of hollow stinging hairs known as trichomes. The trichomes inject histamine into animals and humans upon contact causing allergic reaction. Sometimes the itching pain has been reported to last for hours so it’s also vital to wear gloves when someone is harvesting their own Nettle leaves. When harvesting the Nettle leaves, the top two bracts of leaves are clipped to be used for the tea. Once the Nettle leaves have been harvested, they can be put into a pot of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, the water can be strained to catch the Nettle leaves and then throw them away. Many people sweeten Nettle tea with a teaspoon of honey for taste.

LEMON BALM AILMENT: PROBLEMS FALLING ASLEEP For helping children to relax at night for sleep, or any other time when they need relaxing, consider Lemon Balm tea. Lemon Balm tea can also be used to help relieve anxiety and stress in children through their day, or when needed. TEA TIME This tea is made by boiling up to one teaspoon of dried lemon balm herb in a cup of boiling water on the stove; the lemon balm should be covered and allowed to simmer for up to 10 minutes. Brewing the tea this way is important to trap the valuable antioxidants and medicinal aspects of the Lemon Balm tea in the pot. After brewing, the Lemon Balm tea is then strained to remove the loose herb from the drink. The tea is relaxing and calming to drink as is or a with a teaspoon of honey. The Tooth Health Connection

Tooth damage may signal celiac disease; here’s why early detection is the key to keeping your teeth looking good. By Lio Perron WHILE ALL CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE regular dental visits for good oral health, parents should take special care if they notice unusual tooth damage or have a family history of celiac disease.

Celiac disease is a hereditary autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that is caused by exposure to gluten. Not all cases of celiac disease are triggered by a genetic history; just because there isn’t a history of celiac disease in your family doesn’t mean your child is immune. “You can have autoimmune damage to other organs and one of them is teeth. Nobody is exactly sure how that happens,” said Dr. Mohsin Rashid, a gastroenterologist at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax.

40 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FALL / 2013

Researchers have presented two possible explanations. One is that autoimmune responses triggered by celiac disease may affect tooth development. Another theory is that malabsorption of nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D may prevent patients from building healthy tooth enamel. Although celiac disease can strike at any age, dental-enamel defects “can only occur when teeth are forming,” said Anthony Iacopino, a spokesman for the Canadian Dental Association and dean of dentistry at the University of Manitoba. “Children diagnosed with celiac disease before their adult teeth are fully formed, at about age seven, have a good chance of developing healthy tooth enamel if the disease is treated with a gluten-free diet,” he added.

Tooth defects resulting from celiac disease are permanent and don’t improve after adopting a gluten-free diet Tooth defects resulting from celiac disease are permanent and don’t improve after adopting a gluten-free diet. In patients with the disease, dental enamel may be rough and discoloured, with spots of yellow or brown. There may be structural defects, including deep horizontal grooves and large pits, or the entire tooth may be irregular in shape.

The Canadian Celiac Association has been trying to educate dentists on how to spot celiac disease when they see a patient with dental enamel defects. “In some patients, abnormalities in tooth enamel and recurrent canker sores are the only manifestations of celiac disease,” Rashid said. “This is a relatively easy way to identify this condition.”

Could you have celiac disease?

Iacopino notes that patients may have dental enamel defects for other reasons, including a genetic predisposition or exposure to tetracycline antibiotics. “Just because you see enamel defects doesn’t mean it’s automatically celiac disease,” he says. But if the patient has tooth abnormalities, as well as frequent canker sores, celiac disease is a likely culprit.

In adults, symptoms of celiac disease may include pain and discomfort in the digestive tract, chronic diarrhea or constipation. In children, the disease usually manifests itself by insufficient weight gain or inappropriate weight loss. Paediatricians refer to this phenomenon as “failure to thrive.” In patients with no other symptoms, dentists and dental hygienists can play an important role in recommending screening for celiac disease. Left untreated, celiac disease can lead to osteoporosis, serious vitamin and mineral deficiencies and an increased risk for lymphoma and other cancers. “Awareness of the link between tooth damage and celiac disease is crucial. If you talk to most dentists, they would not know anything about this connection,” said Rashid. A gastroenterologist can detect the disease by administering a biopsy. However, when dentists are knowledgeable about the manifestations of celiac disease they can easily spot it.

42 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FALL / 2013

Although celiac disease affects the small intestine, more than half of all celiac patients have no gastrointestinal symptoms, Rashid said. Dental enamel defects, however, are found in the majority of celiac patients. “Anywhere between 70 and 80 percent of celiac patients have some type of tooth abnormality.” Finding celiac disease as early as possible is critical because a diagnosis in adulthood is too late to reverse the damage to a patient’s teeth. Treatment options for dental enamel defects include sanding the teeth into more regular shapes and other cosmetic procedures. When it comes to your teeth, the earlier you find out you have celiac disease and make changes to you diet, the better. VM

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET FOOD VICE? I eat really healthy most of the time so if I want a greasy poutine every so often I’ll devour one and claim bragging rights. What is your number one comfort food? Just one? Impossible! Cheese and dill pickle sandwiches. Boiled potatoes with sauerkraut, and turkey sausages. What is your biggest food challenge? Trying to avoid dairy products. Cheese is one of my absolute favourite foods but I’ve been essentially dairy-free for a few years now. I’ve found lots of great substitutes. It’s been an adventure. What keeps you eating a balanced diet? I feel better and look better when I eat well. I believe very strongly in the power of food to make or break us. We really are what we eat and I want to be as healthy, whole and free of chemicals as possible. Any allergies or dislikes? I can’t eat pineapple, which sucks, because I love it. As a rule, I don’t eat beef, pork or dairy. I dislike raw onions and I won’t go near anything with artificial sweeteners. What must you always have in your fridge? Perrier, hummus, salad greens or kale, lemons, almond milk, almond butter, frozen berries and dark chocolate. What are some of your go-to meals? I eat a lot of salads with legumes, nuts and homemade vinaigrettes and I make a lot of soups.

Soup is great because I can jam so many nutrients in one pot. Plus, it’s so hearty and satisfying and great for freezing individual portion sizes for when I don’t have time to cook. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I LOVE to cook! Strangest food you’re tried? Cod cheeks. What’s your favourite meal to make for guests in your home? I love to make lots of small plates to nibble on throughout the night when I have people over. I make a killer red pepper hummus. What’s your most used or favourite ingredient to cook with and why? Coconut oil. It’s so easy and flavourful and can withstand high heat. Plus, it’s a super food. I try to put it in or on as many dishes as possible. What have you been busy with over the last year? I’ve been taking some time to travel. I went on an amazing trip to Zambia with the charitable organization I support: CARE Canada. It was lifechanging. I spent a good chunk of time in L.A. and took a trip to Cuba. What’s next for you? Taking over the world. Wait for it. Tyrrells introduces the Exceedingly English Potato Chips We’re Tyrrells and we’re obsessed with making the finest potato chips in the world. We started crafting our potato chips on Tyrrells Court Farm in England in 2002. Our soil is rich, red and fertile - perfect for growing high quality heritage varieties of potatoes such as Lady Claire and Lady Rosetta. They’re the names of the potatoes, not the farmers – just to be clear. We are close to the whole process, from planting to harvesting and finally creating our potato chips in small batches, knowing that quality will always be top notch – as evidenced by over 50 Gold Great Taste Awards won in England. We believe quality also comes from using the finest of ingredients. All our seasonings are made of real ingredients that are dried and carefully combined to become the perfect seasoning for our chips... so when you crunch into a Mature Cheddar chip, that’s real mature cheddar you’re tasting!

Now... Being English means that we have a certain outlook on life, and that we like to do things our way, a little differently. Our packaging is entertaining and different from what you’d usually find. The rather eccentric black and white photos dramatise our seasoning and present them in a very unorthodox way. You will find also that the characters are very English but mostly a little eccentric, like our mature ladies with a truckle of cheddar cheese or our bathers turning cartwheels on the beach. We reckon our potato chips are rather special and here are the variants that have crossed the Atlantic to delight your delicate pallet: Lightly Sea Salted, Mature Cheddar & Chives, Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar, Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper, Sea Salt & Black Pepper, and Worcestershire Sauce & Sundried Tomatoes. We also produce finger licking vegetable chips: Parsnip, Beetroot & Carrot chips with a pinch of Sea Salt. We reckon our chips are rather special - dig in and let us know what you think!

Available in natural food stores, speciality stores and selected grocery.

finally sees the light! by Bonnie Siegler / Photographs by Elisabeth Caren STYLING BY APRIL STEINER HAIR BY STEVEN MASON FOR EXCLUSIVE ARTISTS MANAGEMENT MAKEUP BY TOBY FLEISCHMAN FOR THE WALL GROUP EXCLUSIVELY SHOT ON LOCATION AT HOTEL SHANGRI-LA, SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA

HOW DID A SHY GIRL WITH THICK EYEGLASSES make the move from Oshawa, Ontario to Hollywood? Andrea Joy (A.J.) Cook’s mother always encouraged a creative outlet for four children and A.J. was no exception. She enrolled her daughter in dance at age four. Cook was a painfully shy due to an extreme astigmatism and dance and creativity proved to be an outlet for the little girl. Declared legally blind in the second grade, Cook recalls her early painful years. “Kids are cruel,” says the 35-year-old actor. “I had to wear these thick coke bottle glasses and really couldn’t see – everything looked like a smear of color with no shapes.” The other kids found out Cook was as blind as a bat because she wasn’t doing well in school. “At first, everyone thought I had a learning disability because I couldn’t read, but I couldn’t see the board.” Because she didn’t recognize letters, she didn’t know the sounds the letters would make. “It was a whole domino effect.”

Cook’s mom also has poor eyesight, as does her older brother. “But I was by far, the worst,” says Cook. The actor was required to wear special contacts or thick glasses. Growing up, dance recitals and performances kept Cook engaged because she didn’t have to recite or read anything. “I just didn’t want to become involved in anything at school,” she recalls. “The worst moment for me was in second grade right after getting those glasses. [I was] new to the school and I didn’t know anyone. There was a buddy reading program where the older kids would come and choose their younger partner. I was always the last to be picked; it gave me so much anxiety every time that I get sweaty palms just thinking about it all over again.”

SIMPLE, HEALTHY FOOD

It wasn’t until Cook turned 16 that she started to focus on acting. A year later she landed her first major role in The Virgin Suicides. Since then, she has appeared in over a dozen films and TV shows, but it wasn’t until she was cast as Supervisory Special Agent Jennifer “JJ” Jareau on TV’s hit drama Criminal Minds that she truly felt she had made it.

When Cook’s not stretching, working, or taking care of her family, you can find her making a trail mix of nuts, dried cranberries and dark chocolate bits and heading for the beach. “We’re an on-the-go-family so keeping this trail mix in a zip lock is something that will keep our energy up for the day.” The former vegan also keeps fresh fruits and vegetables ready in her beachside kitchen so that smoothies and protein shakes are regular (and simple) snacks.

SEEING AGAIN Six years ago, Cook made another huge life step when she got a corneal implant – a procedure that changed her life. “It’s the best thing I’ve done,” she says. “It’s been such a blessing for me – someone who has been plagued with [poor eye sight] her whole life.” Concerns about self-esteem and self-image no longer plague Cook who says motherhood has empowered her as a woman and given her the self-confidence that nothing else could. “Having my son was a complete game changer,” says Cook speaking of her fiveyear-old son Mekhai. “You have to grow up really quickly and there isn’t time not to have confidence. All of a sudden you’re forced to find the answers you never really bothered to find out before because now you have a little one you need to teach. You need to figure out who you are or else how is your child going to find out who he is?”

PUTTING FITNESS FIRST Through it all, Cook has figured out what is best for her health and longevity. Staying active is her number one secret. “That’s my healthiest habit,” she admits. “I love Pilates and you’re talking to someone who hated to exercise before. It always seemed like such a chore. But honestly, my favorite time of day (besides being home with my family) is relaxing and stretching during Pilates. I work my muscles, breathe and just focus on myself. To me, it’s better than a massage. The release of those endorphins – I need them… they’re my drug.”

SWEET INDULGENCES Cook is as passionate about her unhealthy habits as she is about her healthy choices. Salt and vinegar Kettle Chips are her absolute favorite. “They’re crunchy and sooooo delicious…I’m trying to keep those down to a minimum.” Being Canadian, she’s holds a soft spot for Tim Hortons. “I love those little donut holes. It’s probably a good thing I don’t live there anymore because I’d be eating way too many Timbits.”

60 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FALL 2013

At mealtime, grass fed beef is a staple. “My husband always has to have a steak but I won’t bring beef into my home if it isn’t grass fed and free of antibiotics and hormones.” An admitted picky food shopper and former yo-yo dieter, Cook says she doesn’t put any limits on herself now. “As soon as I tell myself I can’t have something, that’s all I want and I go crazy. I try to keep everything in moderation and not get into the deprivation mode.”

BUBBLES AND BALANCE At the end of the day, Cook relishes a warm bubble bath filled with lavender oil. “It helps me settle down before bed.” Cook also likes peppermint or spearmint oils which are on the opposite of the spectrum. “I do those baths for energizing and invigorating. I’m a big bubble bath person.” Her strategy to achieve overall balance seems to be working. The self- described “natural, calm and comfortable woman” who culminates life with a healthy mix of activity, organic eating, me-time and work says: “I think appreciating where I am right now in my life truly gives me a sense of peace. A lot of times I don’t take those moments of appreciation, but just sitting at the beach and looking out at the water brings a sense of calm to me.” Cook’s belief in living a healthy lifestyle in the here and now while keeping it simple is just the icing on the balancing act cake. “You have to respect yourself and everyone around you. Just being a good person – I’d say it’s why I am who I am.” With this knowledge has come a broader choice of priorities. “I feel most beautiful when I’m getting a giant hug from my son. I’m really happy where I am right now because I feel fortunate in having my child, my career, my friends and family. So I think at every stage of life there are amazing pluses and minuses. Leveling out in my adulthood means I’m living it.” VM

/ BAL ANCED LIVING

Bellamy Young changes her name and her diet to make it in Hollywood By Bonnie Siegler STAGE NAMES ARE COMMONPLACE in an industry that puts a premium on projecting perfection. This phenomenon explains how Robert Zimmerman became Bob Dylan, Chan Kong-sang became Jackie Chan and Angelina Voigt became Angelina Jolie. In Bellamy Young’s case, changing her name was an a necessity to continue as an actor in Hollywood. She was born Amy Young in Asheville, North Carolina and it wasn’t until she applied for her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card that she was forced to change her name. The SAG doesn’t allow two actors to have the same name and someone else has already laid claim to this moniker.

BECOMING SCANDALOUS

Young started out on Broadway in productions such as Faust and The Life, but soon moved to Los Angeles to star in film and TV. She took a turn opposite Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 3 and last year Young was cast in the political thriller and break out hit Scandal. As First Lady Mellie Grant, Young plays a scandalous political animal on screen. In real life, however, Young is a gentle soul who enjoys regular yoga and a vegan lifestyle. She needs the solace and meditation of a hike or yoga for her exercise.

THE VEGAN EPIPHANY

Young became vegan in 1988, during her sophomore year at Yale. “They served baked breast of chicken and the server plated it off kilter,” recalls Young on her vegan epiphany. “As it was lowered down to my tray, it literally looked like my mother’s little dog rolling over for me to pet its little pink stomach.” She’s never eaten meat again. “I am so fortunate that my body functions much better without meat and it definitely does much better without dairy.” The actress doesn’t fuss over cooking her own vegan dishes. “I make quinoa or put peanut butter in my oatmeal, which is a great breakfast for me,” says Young. Her oatmeal variations include: turmeric and cinnamon, or hemp seeds topped with nutritional yeast. “I’m a whole foods kind of girl.”

Young also starts each day with a green drink. One of her favorites includes aloe vera juice with spiruline and a squeeze of lemon juice. She is also a big fan of almond milk and almond yogurt.

SUPPLEMENTS ARE KEY TO YOUNG’S VEGAN LIFESTYLE

Young feels that supplements are an essential part of her healthy vegan lifestyle. “Iron is super important, as are B vitamins,” says Young. “I take vitamin D too because it seems prudent since I’m staying out of the sun. And I always take a calcium, magnesium and zinc [vitamin] in the morning.” Along with these nutritional supplements, Young makes sure to supplement for her hair. “I take Viatin and a product called Lustrous Hair. Sometimes different considerations are based on different needs that are current.”

BALANCE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

While eating healthy and exercising are important, you can’t have true success without balance. “It’s been a journey towards being more gentle with myself,” says Young. “I used to drive myself really hard.” Now, Young remains mindful about being gentle towards herself and others. All of this together have helped deliver a scandalous career. VM FALL / 2013 VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

Gloria Estefan has a passion

for life that is gonna move you LIFE CAN CHANGE IN A BLINK OF AN EYE – it’s a lesson not

lost on Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan. Miami Sound Machine’s mega hit Conga propelled the band to international stardom after the release of their second English-language album in 1985. But five years after her breakout hit, Estefan was nearly killed while touring. In 1990, the sultry singer and her band mates were riding their commercial peak when a semi-truck slammed into the back of their tour bus. Estefan’s back was so severely broken that her surgery required 400 stitches, and two titanium rods were placed along both sides of her spine. The setback inspired a new direction for the Miami Sound Machine. After

64 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

a yearlong hiatus, the group returned to the stage with their comeback album, Mi Tierra. It featured original Cuban tunes from the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s and received a Grammy award as best tropical Latin album of 1993. Maybe it’s her Cuban roots that contribute to Gloria Estefan’s ongoing success and her ability to bounce back even stronger. Maybe it’s the harrowing bus accident. Or it could be her long, happy marriage to Emilio Estefan whom she married in 1978 – a rare feat in the entertainment industry. Whatever the reasons, Estefan has rebounded from an injury that would have left many others sidelined.

“If I’m able to make someone happy, to be a part of the soundtrack of their lives, then I’m happy, says Estefan.” THE INSPIRATIONS TO HER SUCCESS Estefan’s hectic schedule includes a CD release, overseeing her successful Cuban-themed restaurants in Florida, and her favorite role as wife, mother and – yes – grandmother. “My own grandmother was a very big influence on me – an amazing woman ahead of her time,” says Estefan on one of the biggest inspirations in her life. “We started the restaurant because that was her dream and she was never able to fulfill that. It helps promote our culture through food,” says Estefan. “And I love to eat.” She rolls out the rest of her inspirational list: “my kids, my grandbaby and Emilio. The word ‘no’ is not in his vocabulary.”

HEALTHY CUBAN FOOD Estefan has coined a new phrase when it comes to food. “I call it The Triple C – calorie, conscious, Cuban.” Traditionally Cuban food consists of white rice and fried plantains. To give her native food a healthy spin Bongo’s Cuban Cafes make brown rice with the roasted chicken. They also bake fish, plantains and banana chips instead of frying them. Plus they play up one of the staples – beans. Beans are very good for you as long as they’re prepared correctly. “We’re trying healthier alternatives for Cuban food.” Estefan eats healthy at home too. “I’m very big on quinoa”, she says. “We eat a lot of alfalfa sprouts, chicken, salads, veggies, eggplant and brown rice. I’ve turned my whole family on to healthier eating.”

MOVE THAT BODY Good health also calls for a regular exercise regimen. Less than a year after her accident, Estefan performed in Miami, where

66 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FALL / 2013

she still lives, with an appropriate opening song: Get On Your Feet. “When I did the rehab after the accident, it was really hardcore,” reflects the five-foot-two powerhouse. “I worked out every single day.” Before long, Estefan added Pilates to her rehab program. “Pilates took me to another level,” says the songstress. “Pilates is a totally different exercise program and very good for my neck and back because it works the small muscles.” It’s also great for the hips and lower back. Now that she’s healthy again, the 56-year-old admits that with her hectic schedule her previous seven-day-a-week workout regimen has trailed off to three times a week. “Balance is the key word for me,” says Estefan who also does cardio and strength training.

BALANCE IN LIFE AS WELL “You can’t focus on everything at the same time,” says Estefan. Be in the moment; be fruitful and useful. “My priority has always been my kids so I’ve had to make choices in life. For me, a perfect day would be doing absolutely nothing and being surrounded by the energy of the people I love. That, to me, is my escape.” Estefan recalls a song she wrote called Remember Me With Love. “If I’m able to make someone happy, to be a part of the soundtrack of their lives, then I’m happy,” she says. “And to make someone get up off their butt, run onto the dance floor to just let go and have fun – to me, that’s the best.” VM

The

10-minute toner

Short on time? Here’s how to buff up in just minutes a day By Nancy Ripton / Photographs by Laura Arsie Back to school can be so busy that you have little time left over to work out. But getting fit doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment. When it comes to muscle conditioning, it’s okay if you can’t make it to the gym, but you should try to do a short burst of strength training at home twice weekly. How long does it take? Karen Vouri, a personal trainer at Heaven’s Fitness in Calgary created the following time-saving workout that can be done in just 10 minutes. The exercises are compound movements so they train multiple body parts in a single move to save time. Do the following five exercises once through, two times a week, and watch your body transform into something great. SQUATS WITH ALTERNATING LATERAL RAISE WITH FRONT RAISE

how to: Stand with feet about hip-width apart and slightly turned out. Your arms are relaxed at your sides holding a dumbbell in each hand. Slowly bend your knees, lowering your butt into a squat position. Stop just before you thighs reach parallel with the ground. Simultaneously, lift your straight arms to the sides, stopping just before shoulder height. Straighten your knees as you lower your arms to return to the starting position. Repeat the squat, but this time bring your arms to the front instead of sides. Stop just before weights reach shoulder level. Repeat series for 10 repetitions. you’ll see results in: The front and middle shoulders, hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps, and core muscles.

NARROW ROW WITH REVERSE FLY COMBINATION

how to: Stand with your knees slightly bent and feet hip-distance apart. With a straight back, lean from your hips at about a 45-degree angle. Holding a dumbbell in each hand let your arms hang straight below your shoulders. Keeping your elbows in tight to the body, pull the weights up and back in a rowing motion. Return to starting position, then lift your arms out to the sides, stopping just before shoulder height. Return to starting position and repeat series for 10 repetitions. you’ll see results in: The back, rear shoulders, biceps, core, glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings.

SINGLE LEG STEP UP WITH CROSSOVER REACH AND ONE-ARM OVERHEAD PRESS

how to: Stand about 10 inches behind a bench with feet hip-width apart. Lift your left foot and place it on the step. Hold a dumbbell at your side in your right hand. Transfer most of your weight to the left foot and bend your left knee slightly. Rotate your torso, bringing the dumbbell down and across your body to the outside of your left knee. Then, push off the front foot, lifting the right leg upward until the right foot is inline (but not in contact with) the step. At the same time, bring the dumbbell back across your body and press it upward into a one-arm shoulder press. Return your right foot softly to the floor to prepare for the next repetition. Repeat for 15 repetitions on each side. you’ll see results in: The shoulders, triceps, glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, core muscles (especially the transverse abdominals), and lower back

CHEST PRESS ON BALL

how to: Place a Swiss ball on the floor and lie back so your neck and shoulders rest on the ball. Place your feet hip-width apart on the floor with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle. Engage your abdominals and back to create a “bench” with your body. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and bend elbows to make a 90-degree angle. Without moving your body, press the dumbbells upward, straightening your arms. Slowly lower to starting position or just lower. Repeat for 15 repetitions. you’ll see results in: The chest, hip flexors, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and core.

PILATES OBLIQUES

how to: Lie with your back on a mat and your knees elevated directly over your hips and bent at a 90-degree angle. Your hands are behind your head. Contract your abdominals as you lift your right shoulder off the mat, opening your chest toward the left knee. Your chin is off your chest as you maintain a neutral neck position. At the same time, extend the right leg away from your body. Hold for two seconds; then repeat on the opposite side. Continue to alternate for 10 repetitions on each side. you’ll see results in: The entire core (primarily the obliques and transverse abdominals), and the hip flexors

With fall just on the horizon, Viva gave these four ladies the chance to refresh their look for both the new season and the new opportunities to come.

SHONDA WHITE / 20 STUDENT, BFA IN INDIGENOUS VISUAL CULTURE AT OCAD UNIVERSITY BRAMPTON, ON When Shonda switched out of her psychology program to pursue a career in art, she knew that she needed a look to accompany her fresh start. “You want to embody what you’re about,” she said. “If I’m about art, then I’m not going to look like a scientist. I want to be fresh and new.” The Viva Makeover stylists kept this in mind, giving her a mod new ‘do brimming with creativity. “[This was] actually one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with having a haircut,” she said after recalling a previous cut gone wrong. When asked what she’ll take away from her experience, she said, “Confidence. Viva is all about taking care of yourself and having a balanced lifestyle. Part of that is feeling good and confident about yourself.

HAIR

Shonda came in with a lot of hair; it was actually kind of like a helmet. Big, puffy, droopy: it wasn’t the most flattering shape for her. We removed a lot of the thickness and kept the top a little longer in order to get the shape to shrink. She has a more sleeker, broken apart and softer look than when she came in, with more movement, lines and definition. We used the blue highlight in front, wispy bangs and a really soft nape just to keep it very feminine. We could’ve chosen many colours. This spray bottle [on the counter] was the inspiration of her colour to be honest with you. She actually showed us this bottle, and it’s pretty close. Having a blonde base, you can pretty much do almost anything. Pink, blue, red — everything goes with this colour. — ERNESTO DOMANICO

MAKE-UP

As Shonda is entering an art program this fall, Makiko took creative liberty and gave this candidate a fresh and playful look. With a mix of strong bright colours and soft pinks, this look had a fierce punch of colour while maintaining a feminine glow. Bright and bold eyeliner is a very big trend now, especially aqua, as pictured on Shonda. Add yellow eye shadow to give the liner a more playful boost. Apply soft pink blush on the apples of the cheeks to create a fresh and cute look. Necklace, H&M, $20; Dress, BCBG Max Azria, $344; Bag, BCBG Max Azria, $102

ZOFIA CIOLEK / 50 RENTAL AGENT, BRAMPTON, ON When Zofia’s daughter Victoria nominated her for the Viva Makeover, Zofia admits she was surprised, but also a little scared. However, Victoria knows her mother barely gets a break from her job as a building superintendent and doesn’t have the time to get dolled up and pampered. “She’s hardworking and she told me she’s always wanted to do a makeover, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for her,” said Victoria. “Sometimes I’m confused,” said Zofia. “I don’t know what to wear, how to wear it, or how to wear makeup, so I’m really excited.” While she admits that the photo shoot was nerve-wracking at first, Zofia couldn’t help but express that she felt like a movie star. “It was an unforgettable experience,” she said. “I enjoyed the photo shoot, but most of all I can’t get over my new hair. I love my look!”

Zofia came in with long hair in the back and quite short hair in the front. I didn’t want to add more layers; it’d just make it look too dated. So, what I’ve done is removed some length in the back and cleaned up the layers. It’s ultimately given her more volume, softness and movement. She came in with this rusted red colour that was just kind of bland. Now her hair is rich, soft and natural — and it makes her look so young and fresh. The browns, the reds and anything to do with natural tones always come back in the fall. — ERNESTO DOMANICO

MAKE-UP

Makiko wanted to maintain a mature and classy look for Zofia. By using clean, light shades and dusting in a dash of colour, Zofia’s complexion was brightened up with healthy look that glowed with sophistication. A perfect base and clean eye makeup are very important keys to achieving a clean, healthy glow. Light contours with a tiny bit of highlight and cream illuminator will brighten up the skin. Also, coral blush will give a healthy look. For the eyes, using black eye shadow as an eyeliner will soften the image. Apply very thin eyeliner on the bottom lash line to define the eyes. / BEAUT Y MAKE0VER LINDSAY LAMB / 29 SENIOR BUSINESS SYSTEMS ANALYST CHATHAM, ON If there’s one thing 29-year-old Lindsay Lamb is, it’s a go-getter. Lindsay, who just finished her CMA designation, is now ready to embark on her career. However, with a goal of having her MBA and CMA before her thirtieth birthday, this candidate has put me-time on the backburner in order to pursue her goals. On makeover day, her go-getter habits didn’t stop in the salon chair. As the white-blonde dye settled into her locks, Lindsay knew change was coming, but she admitted she wasn’t nervous. “It’s going to be a change, which is good,” she said. “Nice and vibrant. This is the lightest I’ve ever been. I’m ready to start fresh and welcome 30 next year by looking and feeling great!”

HAIR

Lindsay came in with shoulder length hair; all beat up from highlights. She also had it razored in the past so it was getting a little scraggly at the ends. Since she’s moving into a professional line of work, I wanted to give her something that was still professional, yet with a lot of movement and softness. If you look at her skin tone, eyes and features, Lindsay is a natural born blonde. We always try to stay in the parameters of natural blonde, but also give it punch, and that’s what we’ve done. We got the regular highlights, bleached them all out and gave her a crisp, clean look. Bob haircuts are professional, good for work, versatile and easy to maintain. These blunt types of looks never go out of style for that reason. And once you dress it up with some nice colour, you can make an old style new again.

—ERNESTO DOMANICO

MAKE-UP

For Lindsay, Makiko decided to pursue a clean and natural look using a soft contour and highlight. Smudging the liner of Lindsay’s smoky eyes made sure the look was soft and not overdone. To get the smoky eye, Makiko applied medium brown eye shadow on the crease and light beige on the lid. Light beige in the inner corners of the eyes makes them pop while still maintaining a natural look. Apply medium brown eye shadow (the same used on the crease) under the eyes, moving halfway from the outer corners. Get the soft smoky eye look by applying black pencil eyeliner and smudging it to blend with the dark brown shadow on the eyelid.

NAMI SUGIMOTO / 32 REAL ESTATE AGENT, TORONTO, ON After working in the fashion industry for over five years and making a sudden career switch into real estate, Nami realized her personal style was suffering. “Being extremely busy and always on the go, I’ve found it hard to maintain my personal style,” she says. “I am simply tired of my look.” A subtle yet sultry makeover brought life into Nami’s style. She also rocked the feminine skirt and blazer look during the photo shoot, which was why we were surprised when she said she didn’t even own a business suit herself. “I’m not your every day real estate agent,” she said. “It was a nice change. You have to sometimes trust other people, and that’s what I did. I put my looks in someone else’s hands and it turned out great.”

HAIR

Nami came in with long hair — it was halfway up her back, sitting really flat on top and big on the sides. We took it a little shorter and did some beautiful ombré shading on the ends of her hair, just to give it that sun-kissed look. Ombré is really in style now as well. Nami is a professional, and we tried to stick with something professional and versatile. But she’s a young woman as well, so we want her to look young, cool and with it. At Salon Solis, our philosophy is to give soft and moveable hair. Things that are really feminine, soft and simple we find will please every customer. These kinds of looks are timeless. We have these nice browns in there, which is a fall colour that we usually work with. On top of that, this is a really loose, soft look — even walking in the wind will look great. — ERNESTO DOMANICO

MAKE-UP

For Nami, Makiko aimed for a professional look with a fun edge to it. Playing with some bronzer and winged liner, Nami was given a timeless look that’s good from mornings in the office to nights on the town. To create sun-kissed skin, apply bronzer on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. Winged liner is a timeless trend and can be both elegant and edgy. To create edgy winged liner, extend your stroke and hold it with less of an angle. Nami has beautiful long eyes, so she’s perfect for this style. Adding gold eye shadow to the centre of the lid gives even more of an edge and matches her sun-kissed skin. Necklace, vintage, Anna Dello Russo; Cardigan, Christopher Paunil, $265

Rejuvenate

and go beyond

Healthy Andrew Munaweera

Why?

Because the health threats from our modern lifestyle reduce the health and functioning of our complex and sensitive digestive system. What are these potent lifestyles threats that can compromise our health? • Constant stress from work, family and financial pressures • Rushed eating • Eating at irregular times • Suboptimal or poor food choices • Not enough sleep or poor quality sleep • Spending too much time using electronic gadgets such as tablets, smartphones, computers, televisions and e-readers • Exposure to environmental pollutants which accumulate in the nervous system tissue and body fat tissue over time • Presence of aggressive, undesirable microorganisms caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. These microorganisms can create extreme illness or even death. These health threats exert unwanted effects on our highly complex, active and sensitive digestive system. The human digestive system, or gut for short, consists of the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, and the small and large intestines. Consider these amazing facts about your digestive system: • Average Length: 27 feet long (in an adult human) • Weight of the bacteria in your digestive tract: 3.5 pounds • Number of bacteria in your digestive tract: 100 trillion — or 10x the number of cells in your body • Surface area of your digestive tract: the size of a tennis court (if you laid it out completely) So how do you maintain and restore digestive health to protect yourself from our 21st century lifestyle threats? Simple…with a complete Rejuvenation System—one that leverages the power of probiotics.

Why probiotics?

Because you need gut care that goes beyond simply managing and fixing. You may have, or could have, real issues in need of resolution. If any of the above mentioned threats pertain to you, you can benefit from rejuvenation and starting with the gastrointestinal tract is your answer.

The Rejuvenation Solution

The rejuvenation solution starts with the rejuvenation of your digestive tract. Rejuvenation happens by shifting the quality and the quantity of the friendly bacteria living throughout the entire length of your digestive system. Let me introduce you to the concepts of rejuvenation and probiotics so you can better understand the importance of why you need to rejuvenate your digestive system with a

VIVAAPR2012_DOCKET_ADVERTISER_PRODUCT_FP.indd 1

probiotic system.

Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation means to restore to an original or new state; to make young or youthful again. True rejuvenation starts at the core where all health, healing and vitality begins – the human gastrointestinal system, or gut. More specifically, gut rejuvenation starts by focusing on enhancing the balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria along the entire length of your digestive tract.

Probiotics

There are good bacteria and bad bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotics are the good, friendly bacteria. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as “Live bacteria that may confer a health benefit on the host.” The quantity and quality of this microflora balance within your gut can either make you vital and alive or sick and dead. That’s why gut rejuvenation is so important – it quickly and powerfully enhances the quantity and quality of your friendly bacteria.

Rejuvenation: Go Beyond Healthy

Because of the complexity and power of the digestive system, rejuvenation is the only answer to truly improve gut health, gut function and move beyond just being healthy. By combining ancient health knowledge with modern scientific research, gut rejuvenation uses a unique and powerful probiotic system of friendly bacteria to gently transform the health and functioning of your entire digestive system. The results are immediate and noticeable.

So how do you spot an authentic probiotic rejuvenation system? Easy…for what they contain and what they don’t contain. The use of five core technologies allows us to difsuper strains of microorganisms proven safe 1. Select and effective in published human clinical trials (look

for Lactobacillus bulgaricus, LB-51 strain; Lactobacillus acidophilus, NAS strain; and Bifidobacterium bifidum, Malyoth strain)

must be grown appropriately so that they ex2. Strain press maximum probiotic properties

3. The use of an effective delivery system to help the bacteria survive passage through the harsh environments of hydrochloric acid and bile

during manufacture, distribution and 4. Refrigeration storage stated potency through a printed expiry date 5. Clearly for each strain of probiotic used packaging made of dark glass bottles and 6. Protective metal lids to maintain potency through protection of heat, moisture and damaging UV light

And, finally, here’s what an authentic probiotic rejuvenation system doesn’t contain:

1. Potency of microorganisms expressed by weight only (in milligrams, mg)

The Key to Rejuvenation: A Powerful Probiotic System

Only a complete and specialized probiotic system is powerful enough to rejuvenate your incredibly complex gut and protect it from your lifestyle. To understand why, you need to understand the difference between a probiotic rejuvenation system and conventional probiotics.

2. Two or more species listed on the label without potency expressed in colony forming unit (cfu) activity

3. Gas-producing fructooligosaccharides (FOS – a type of indigestible, fermentable prebiotic)

4. The claim of shelf-stability

Conventional Probiotics

Conventional probiotic products work fine for general health maintenance. Much research has been done over the past 50 years — and especially in the last 20 years on probiotics in many forms (capsules, cultured milk products, powders and drinks) and using many different types of probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium longum, to name just a few). You can recognize conventional probiotic products because they’ll usually contain multiple strains of bacteria on the label in specific “mixtures”. The better quality probiotic products will be found in the refrigerator.

Probiotic Rejuvenation System

In contrast, a probiotic rejuvenation system moves beyond these conventional probiotics because a probiotic rejuvenation system contains powerful technology designed to deliver the most potent probiotic microorganisms directly to target areas in your digestive tract.

Safflower: Traditionally, Safflower is grown for its seeds and used for colouring and flavouring food. In skincare products, safflower oil is used as a lubricant because of its occlusive properties. Safflower locks in moisture by forming a protective barrier to prevent water from leaving your skin. It works with your skin to soften, smooth and soothe.V

Licorice root: In traditional Chinese medicine,

licorice root is commonly used to harmonize other ingredients in herbal formulas. It’s also used to reduce inflammation and soothe irritated skin. Recent research has demonstrated the powerful anti-inflammatory and hydrating characteristics of licorice root in the successful treatment of eczema. *See Viva’s Get the Look on page 82 to find out how these natural ingredients can benefit your beauty routine.

Eucalyptus oil: The cineole-based oil is used as a component in certain lozenges, ointments and inhalants to relieve the symptoms of influenza and colds. Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial effects on pathogenic bacteria in the respiratory tract. Inhaled eucalyptus oil vapor is a decongestant and treatment for bronchitis.

/ YOUR LIFE

Inspired Living

In this issue, our Viva Makeover winners step up to the plate and share their health and lifestyle challenges and their secrets to attaining optimal health, naturally.

CHALLENGES: When I was younger, I didn’t really care about what I was eating or doing, which lead to me never really being fit. There also didn’t seem to be the same health hype that there is today. Now it’s all about fast weight loss pills, gym memberships and foods that are marketed as low in fat and good for you. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: I think the most important part of having a balanced lifestyle is education. It’s not just about knowing that vegetables are healthier than a chocolate bar and that you should exercise regularly. Find out where your food comes from, explore organic options, learn what benefits certain types of exercises can offer, try yoga at least once in your lifetime, and make sure that you share the knowledge you gain. There are a lot of scary things out there that can affect our health and we don’t even know about them yet. It’s going to take more than just fad diets and crunches to get ourselves on a path to healthy, balanced living that affects everyone physically, mentally, socially and economically. For me, the challenge isn’t to get to the gym, but to actually stay there. So, these one-hour classes are great, since once you start, you have no choice but to finish.

Name: Shonda Age: 20 Occupation: Full-Time Student

CHALLENGES: Although my focus on health took a back seat during significant times of achievement, like getting my MBA and CMA, upholding healthy living still has a place by assisting me during my journey by helping me managing stress. My balance was off when I wasn’t able to wear my favorite clothes. Yes, as shallow as that sounds, I feel out of balance when I cannot wear my favorite fashions and express myself. When I turned 29, it hit me. I had achieved my MBA and CMA but my health had been put on the backburner. I wanted to look and feel great at 30.

Name: Lindsay Age: 29 Occupation: Senior Business Systems Analyst

90 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FALL / 2013

HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: Turning 30 in the upcoming year inspired me to make a change in my lifestyle by joining a gym and getting a personal trainer. Fitness recommendations that have worked for me are cardio circuit training and drinking lots of water. So far, I’ve lost five pounds and I’m feeling great in the hottest fashions. My health is the far most important focus of my life. When I eat well, exercise and get proper rest, I am at my best and ready for life’s events. This also means being at my best to celebrate life’s success. A proper BMI is how I measure my balance; life is really that – a balance. Bring on 30!

CHALLENGES: I think my number one challenge is eating right. As a realtor and a single mom who is always on the go, on the road, and in and out of appointments, it’s hard to keep a balanced diet. Being a foodie doesn’t help either. I think my major weakness is food, mainly salty, savory and spicy. When I first started in the industry, I found myself eating whenever I could sneak in a moment, and normally, that meant binging on whatever was around in massive quantities, which is never a good thing. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to realize that maintaining a balanced life and diet are extremely important, not only for my physical self, but for my inner health and future. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: I have started taking baby steps with making better choices. I’ve started to watch my salt intake, fried food consumption and started drinking a lot of water, which was never a favourite of mine in the past. I try to keep only healthy stuff at home. Lots of fruits and veggies in the fridge help keep the junk out of my daughter’s mouth too. I recently enrolled in classes at a local women’s studio where I have taken anything from pole dancing to hula classes, and they are great.

Name: Nami Age: 32 Occupation: Real Estate Agent

CHALLENGES: I’ve always been a healthy individual but I’m constantly struggling with high blood pressure. My symptoms of high blood pressure include nervousness and fatigue. With hypertension it’s not a great feeling so you want to do whatever it takes to get rid of it. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: I turned to running which has lowered the side effects of my illness. I work out regularly to keep my body in shape. Exercise and good diet have helped me with this issue. For health recommendations I would say cook at home. Homemade food is not only delicious, but you are 100 per cent aware of what is used in the food you consume. I eat plenty of salad, but try to stay away from red meats. I ended up losing 15 pounds from incorporating nutritious foods into my lifestyle. The main point is to enjoy yourself when you workout and realize the good you’re doing for your body.

The right spa visit should touch you mentally, emotionally and spiritually

Although summers in Scottsdale sizzle, the other seasons average 80 degrees during the day and offer cool, comfortable nights. Whatever season you choose, ease your body into the desert climate with Joya spa’s signature treatment of the Hammam Ritual. “Being a Moroccan and Andalusian inspired resort and spa, the Hammam Ritual was created to represent a traditional treatment prominent from this region.” The bathing ritual incorporates the benefits of a cleansing exfoliation from the black soap and kassa cloth scrub to the increased circulation and detoxification from the hot and cold circuits.

ACTIVITIES IN THE SURROUNDING AREA On lazy afternoons, head over to Prado, the resort’s AAA Four-Diamond restaurant for one of their tapas cooking classes. Or head into Old Town Scottsdale and visit one of the many galleries dotting the streets or enjoy the challenging hiking trails at Camelback Mountain. If you want to go a little further, head to the foothills just outside the city to see Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and school. Wright lived in the desert from 1937, before running water was installed, until his death in 1959 at age 91. Today it is the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture with striking examples of organic design and construction. The eccentric architect felt a very strong connection to the desert with its sweeping lines, local desert rocks and magnificent natural lighting. Scottsdale is a destination full of exciting activities to keep visitors of all ages busy… or not. Relaxation and rejuvenation are unexpected reprieves in the midst of the desert. / HOROSCOPE

Libra

BY LOUIS ROBERT

LIBRA (SEPT. 23 – OCT. 23) Your balancing act could use some fine tuning. You’ve had plenty of time to play throughout spring and summer but you well know your best opportunities come in the autumn. So, tip the scales in your favour and throw yourself into your work. Don’t worry about rewards now; they’ll come in time for Christmas or the New Year. Not that playtime is over; it’s just that you should be playing with your career right now. Think of ways you can be more expedient, creative or efficient at your job and have fun while doing it. SCORPIO (OCT. 24 – NOV. 21)

Yes it has been a tough year Scorpio but you’re one of the most powerful signs of the zodiac so you can take it. Try not to be as exacting on others as you are with yourself as we’re not all as strong as you. Take your frustrations out on gym equipment instead. People in your immediate circle need some space; give it to them. You have wonderful effulgence this fall that is contagious so let your light shine! Remember, a candle loses none of its light while lighting another.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 – DEC. 21) Power struggles at work or at home should abate during autumn. Don’t fall prey to the temptation to be deceptive or manipulative because what you sow you will reap. You’ll get better results in conflicts by being sincere – even brutally honest, or risk being seen as untrustworthy. The good news is your energy level increases dramatically and when it comes to showing the world what you are capable of, heads will turn in your direction. A new friend or romance provides valuable rest for the weary.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 – JAN. 19)

It has been said that money is power and Capricorns are well-versed in all things financial so watch your power increase this fall. Not that everything has to be a power struggle. Why not utilize that reliable but often hidden charm of yours instead? Yes, Capricorns can be very charming through being supportive and by providing sage advice to others. However, your self-discipline needs to be turned up a notch or two to reap the best of this rich time of growth for you. Your transformation process has only just begun. Think outside the box for best results.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 – FEB. 18)

Your new venture may look very promising, and probably is, but don’t count your chickens just yet. Sudden, unexpected developments could throw a wrench in the works, especially in October. Keep your eyes on your goal and your feet on the ground and you will get what you want eventually. Ignore the naysayers; your commitment to your

98 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM FALL 2013

ideals will pay off in the long run. But it’s not all work; romance, fun, friends and socializing are highlighted for you this fall.

PISCES (FEB. 19 – MAR. 20)

Your dreams and fantasies are taking up a lot of your time this autumn but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Are your creative juices flowing as well? If not, find your inner muse and start being more creative as the quality of your creative works should be very high now. Someone in poor health may need your help now, but you won’t complain. You love to be there for other people, a testament to your highly compassionate nature. You deserve a little self-indulgence so go ahead and say yes to all those social invitations.

ARIES (MAR. 21 – APR.19)

You may be forced to change some of your foundations or boundaries this autumn, but try not to fight it, as the time is right to improve some areas of your life – especially in September. Keep fluid in your activities as Uranus continues to challenge the Rams with unexpected twists and turns. Your ego is running high so keep that in mind before you blow up at people. For the sake of your health, look for ways to “go with the flow” in October and, if you can afford it, buy that new electronic toy you’ve been eyeing for months.

TAURUS (APR. 20 – MAY 20)

Relationships are proving to be more of a challenge now, and if someone leaves your life it is for the best. Now you can focus on taking better care of yourself. Pull yourself up out of that negative attitude; there are opportunities lurking nearby, but first you have to work at putting the past behind you. A fresh new look and attitude will do wonders for making you feel better. Never one to be rushed, you will find you need to pick up your pace this autumn to avoid larger frustrations.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21)

Don’t believe everything you hear this autumn.

It’s possible you could be deceived, perhaps even by yourself. Also, try not to get yourself too tangled up with unnecessary problems or activities. October will be far too busy for you to waste time; good thing you normally have the energy level of two people. Money may arrive in one way or another but avoid any “shady deals” offered by people with questionable motives. And of course avoid shady people.

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22)

Wow, it’s a whirlwind of activity this fall for you. But it’s all for the good. One or more of these areas will likely see improvement: finances/investments; home/real estate; family relationships; creative activities and perhaps a new job or promotion. Something you’ve been waiting for during most of this year may finally arrive giving you more stability and a new start. The one downfall? Watch your diet. All this abundance may cause you to be less than disciplined while you celebrate.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUG. 22)

You’re still digging yourself out of a huge mess but why are you taking so long? Quit complaining or daydreaming and get it done Leo. You’re all fired up for September with loads of energy to meet the demands so just do it or you’ll be wasting a valuable period. That thorn in your side isn’t being removed quite yet so ignore him or her for the time being and do what you know needs to be done. Look for a new friend or romance soon.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPT. 22)

Now aren’t you glad you didn’t rush into that new endeavour in the spring? Sometimes delays and frustrations occur for this very reason; to take a longer look and see a better way to do it. Your resourcefulness will be rewarded this fall and allow you a new beginning. Let go of worrying and manifest the final details with a positive attitude. Your health should greatly improve (this IS your time of year) so even if feeling very well think of a way you can maintain these good healthy vibes, make up a plan then GO! VM

Long, strong lustrous hair

Hair that would make even Rapunzel jealous. Thin hair, weak nails and less-than-supple skin are all signs of a mineral deficiency. The good news is that you don’t need an Enchantress to fix it; it can often be reversed by supplementing with Florasil®. The silica in Florasil® helps to reverse some of the effects of aging by rejuvenating collagen, promoting the growth of strong, flexible nails, and thick, lustrous hair.
