A Welcome Change The holidays are a time for balancing tradition with change. So it’s fitting that I kick off my new role as editor of Viva with the holiday issue. In terms of keeping with tradition, I have been a writer and editor for almost 15 years. Also, I have always had a passion for health and wellness; whether it was working as a fitness director and personal trainer, running a marathon or biking with my kids. In the past I was editor-in-chief of two health publications; after having my first child almost seven years ago, however, I decided to switch to freelance so I could lead a more balanced life. Now, after seven years of writing for a variety of publications, it’s a welcome change to be part of a team again and return to my passion of delivering information people need to make healthy changes to their life. As a busy mother of three, I understand how difficult it can be to make time for fitness, to eat right, and to carve out a little me-time. At times it can seem impossible. Taking care of yourself, however, is a key ingredient of leading a balanced life. Our goal at Viva is to show you little ways to boost your health – and the health of your family – that take minimal commitment, while offering maximum rewards. I’m so excited to take on this new challenge and can’t wait to hear more about what you’d like to see from Viva in the upcoming year. Please send me your thoughts to nancy@vivamagonline.com.

The Mark for Events, where Nia Long’s VIVA photo shoot took place, lived up to its moniker. It definitely became an event from the moment Nia Long entered and then took center stage for the camera. Our cover team was prepared for the entrance of the actor and director who arrived in jeans, tee and a big smile. Upbeat music, girl talk and mommy chatter filled the space with the same enthusiasm usually reserved for a baby shower. “My little one is home with a cold,” said Long as she slipped into the burgundy velvet dress. “Ooooh this dress is so rich – it makes me feel so playful and romantic. Active Liver ™ Cleanse and flush the fat The liver has a vital function for the body, other than cleansing it! The liver is an important fat burning organ. It metabolizes and flushes fats from our system. But if the liver is burdened by an unhealthy lifestyle, it becomes less effective and starts storing fat, especially around the belly and on the inner organs. Active Liver tablets contain effective plant extracts to promote your liver's health and function.
#1 CHILI FAT BURNER *
Chili Burn™ Your natural fat burner Green tea and chili peppers have the ability to enhance your metabolism and help increase fat burning without the unhealthy side effects. Chili Burn contains both these ingredients as well as chromium, which helps the body release fat.
Nature contains some of the best remedies for safely relaxing the body and mind. Melissa Dream uses ingredients such as l-theanine from green tea leaves, as well as lemon balm and chamomile. The ingredients have been proven effective in promoting a deep relaxation, which can help you reduce stress but also help you sleep through the night, and wake up refreshed.
Apple Cider ™ Helps with water retention Apple cider has been used for centuries as a miracle ingredient, especially for weight and digestion. Apple Cider 600 is an enhanced product, also containing dandelion root and artichoke, which help the body rid itself of excess water weight as well as stimulating the liver process (important for fat flushing).

How do you define balanced living?
Nia Long
Viva Holiday 2013 Cover Girl and star of The Best Man Holiday
By bonnie siegler, photos: Elisabeth caren
Just being in the moment; enjoying the moment and having a sense of humor is key. To lead a balanced life you need a sense of humor, love, and a sense of spirituality or a connection to whatever you believe in that’s bigger than all of us. That, and I cannot imagine my life without my children. Doing what you love to do is also an essential part of leading a balanced life. Work with the idea that whatever it is you do, you will be successful at it and be respectful of the money you make. A lot of people say they love what they do and aren’t worried about the money. The truth is, we all need that to have a certain quality of life. I think respecting money in the sense that you’re not frivolous with it and understanding its value is important. You also need to give back.

Not tonight, I’m too tired When “I’m too tired” is more than just an excuse.
NPN 80023801
We’ve all faked a headache or used the excuse “I’m too tired” but the truth is many of us really are too tired…too tired for a little romance, too tired for exercise, and too tired to concentrate. Life is busy and trying to juggle family and work can leave you feeling exhausted and run down…especially if you are iron deficient. Never mind the fact that those dark circles under your eyes and pale skin can leave you feeling unattractive. When going to bed early is your idea of a “good time”, it’s time for a change. Floradix® is an easily absorbed, plant based, liquid iron and vitamin formula that is easy on the digestive tract and free of artificial colours and flavours. So redefine your definition of a “good time” with Floradix® and rekindle the romance. Available in natural health food stores, select grocery stores and pharmacies.

ok… who cut the cheese? When gas is no joke
NPN 80037365
It can sneak up (and out) at the most ill opportune times. We have all experienced it at one point or other – in yoga class, a crowded elevator, or in the middle of a game of Twister – no time is a good time. Gas is inevitable since cooking destroys natural enzymes in food preventing proper digestion and nutrient absorption. This is where Udo’s Choice® Enzymes can help. They begin breaking food down from the moment you start eating to ensure proper digestion and nutrient absorption from start to finish. Udo’s Choice® Enzymes contain natural enzymes that are formulated to prevent gas, bloating, cramping and lactose intolerance.
Udo’s Choice® Enzymes keep those embarrassing situations in check. Available in natural health food stores, select grocery and pharmacies.

Beauty secrets
The falling mercury means changes to your beauty regime are a necessity. Here’s how some of Hollywood’s biggest stars plan on looking great this season.
You can achieve the same stunning look as Adele with Suncoat’s Long Lasting Nail Polish enamels. These shades are vibrant and rich, reflective of the autumn season, contain no formaldehyde and boast a does of carmine*, a natural colourant.
THE NATURAL WAY
To give your brows more definition, we recommend Mineral Fusion’s Eye Pencil in Touch. The pencil glides on smoothly and is easy to blend to your liking. Ingredients like chamomilla flower extract and macadamia oil* have a natural ability to complement the delicate skin surrounding the eye area. As a bonus, this pencil can also be used as a liner! Mineral Fusion Eye Pencil in Touch (1.1g, $14.99)

THE NATURAL WAY
Volume is the main thing this Oscar-winning actress wants for her pixie hairstyle. Nature’s Rose
Who said roses are always sweet? Rosacea can wreak havoc on your skin. Luckily, it is relatively easy to treat. Here’s how to keep your rosacea in check and have beautiful skin again.
W
By nancy ripton
hat do Bill Clinton, Mariah Carey, Princess Diana and Cynthia Nixon all have in common? They all suffer from rosacea. While dealing with the skin condition can be inconvenient, these celebrities are proof that you can still look great and have amazing skin – you just need to know a few little secrets. What is Rosacea Rosacea affects close to 20 million North Americans. It is most likely to occur in fair-skinned people and tends to be genetic, but anyone can get it at any time in their life (it’s most common between ages 30 to 50 though). Rosacea can also look different on different people, but characteristics tend to include: redness on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead; acne-like bumps or pimples on the face; a tendency to blush easily; tight, dry or itchy skin on the face; a burning

or stinging sensation on the face; visible blood vessels on the face; and irritated eyes. Because of its appearance, rosacea is sometimes referred to as adult acne. While both conditions can cause pimples, rosacea requires different therapy. In fact, some acne treatments can make it worse. Because of the chronic nature of rosacea it rarely goes away by itself. “With time rosacea gets worse so it’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible,” says Dr. Lisa Kellet, a Toronto-based dermatologist. Rosacea Triggers One of the most important steps in keeping your rosacea in check is to learn your triggers and try to avoid them whenever possible. Flare-ups can be provoked by a wide range of environmental, physical, and emotional factors and rosacea triggers vary from person to person.

Rosacea3.indd 34

While rosacea is not a by-product of alcohol abuse, as little as one drink can aggravate flare-ups. Red wine tends to be especially problematic. Other triggers include: extreme heat, exercise, and stress. “Avoiding triggers can be extremely difficult,” says Kellet. That being said, it’s still important to identify your triggers. Keeping a rosacea journal might be useful if you are having trouble pinpointing what makes your rosacea worse. Knowing your triggers when you visit your dermatologist will make it easier for them to develop a plan to keep your rosacea in check. Once you’ve identified triggers you still need to monitor what causes your flare-ups. “New triggers can pop up over time,” says Kellet.
photo: Karen Byker
Managing your Rosacea Rosacea can’t be cured. It can, however, be treated. Because rosacea gets worse over time if left untreated, the first thing you should do is visit your dermatologist. “Treatments vary depending on your symptoms and triggers,” says Kellet. For example, topical treatments can be very effective in treating
According to a survey by the National Rosacea Society, 81 per cent of patients said that sun exposure was their number one rosacea trigger. Food is another huge trigger. Spicy foods tend to top the list of oral flareup inducers. other foods that can cause problems include: chocolate, dairy, hot soups, beans, citrus fruits and foods that are high in histamine such as cheese (except cottage cheese), eggplant, spinach, vinegar, and soy sauce.
acne-like papules, but they do nothing for redness or visible blood vessels. Likewise, Accutane and certain antibiotics can diminish papules but would also be ineffective in treating redness or blood vessels. Photothermolysis, a laser therapy, can be very effective in treating the later, however. “The lasers warm the blood vessel walls and help shut them down,” says Kellet. Lumenis One is another great option for non-papular rosacea. “Multiple wavelengths of light can help soothe the skin,” says Kellet.
Mariah Carey is just one of a long list of celebrities who suffer from rosacea.
Once your condition has been properly diagnosed and your triggers have been identified there is a lot you can do on your own to keep your rosacea in check. Finding the right skin care products is essential. Rosacea-prone skin tends to be sensitive, so products with alcohol and fragrance can irritate your skin. Witch hazel, menthol, peppermint and eucalyptus oil also tend to be triggers. People with rosacea should also avoid scrubs and toners and products made to treat acne. Ideally you should cleanse your skin with alcoholand fragrance-free products; then rinse with lukewarm water, and blot your face dry with a soft cotton towel. Also, always wear a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB protection) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Like Kellet said, avoiding triggers can be extremely difficult. That being said, aim to avoid extreme weather whenever possible. Cozying up by a fire or enjoying a hot bath or sauna can be overwhelming. If you have to go out in the cold, cover up with a hat and scarf. If exercise is a trigger, try to workout indoors in a wellventilated area – preferably by a fan. If you’re training outdoors, do so when the sun is at its weakest (early morning or evening) and make sure you rehydrate often. With a few simple lifestyle changes you may find that your rosacea is much easier to handle than you once thought. VM holiday 2013 / vivamagonline.com

Skin
this winter, Save your …with Hyaluronic Acid By Dr. Linda Miles, D.O.M.
H

arsh winter weather and indoor heating can wreak havoc on your complexion. Skin can feel dry, tight and irritable, while looking dull and lifeless. In fact, you are probably asking yourself, what happened to my radiant, youthful glow? To survive this skin-challenging season, save skin with the unmatched hydrating properties of Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that binds to water to lubricate tissue, keeping it healthy and hydrated. As we age, our bodies stop producing this vital element. Therefore, not only are we dealing with winter’s drying elements, skin is getting drier with age. Dry skin accentuates fine lines and wrinkles and contributes to a rough, dull complexion. Known for delivering rich, superior moisture as well as antiaging benefits, Hyaluronic Acid has become a must-have in skin care products. When applied topically, HA (nicknamed, “the moisture magnet”) has the amazing ability to attract and bind water molecules to skin. This action helps visibly plump to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps keep skin hydrated, thereby improving skin tone and texture encouraging incredibly soft, smooth, healthy skin. Winter Skin Care Routine During winter, because the hours of sunshine are less, skin oil production slows which can leave skin vulnerable. Using harsh soaps or cleansers (especially those containing drying alcohols or those that are not pH balanced) can strip away the natural oils leaving skin defenseless against the cold, drying air. A natural, deeply moisturizing cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid will help wash away dirt, oil and impurities without drying, aging after-effects. Skin will feel clean, soft and smooth, not dry or tight. Follow with a hydrating toner or mist to leave skin feeling healthy and refreshed. Next, thoroughly moisturize to quench thirsty skin. Using a moisturizer that does not sufficiently hydrate the surface of the skin will cause dryness to continue. To ensure you find products that replenish the moisture lost in the drying winter elements, look for rich treatment serums and crèmes fortified with Hyaluronic Acid as well as lusciously hydrating oils. In the morning and evening, apply a treatment serum to clean skin. Formulated to wear under a moisturizer, a hydrating Hyaluronic Acid serum provides an extra layer of nourishment that plumps skin full of moisture and nutrients. Follow with a deeply moisturizing Hyaluronic Acid day and night crème that can deliver
long-lasting, much needed hydration while helping to plump and diminish the visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Skin will feel softer and smoother while looking more radiant and youthful. Lastly, target extremely dry, dull areas with a boost of intensive healthy moisture by applying Vitamin E oil. Adding one or two drops to your moisturizer, or layering it over your crème will help lock in essential hydration for healthy tone, renewed texture and exceptional suppleness. This winter, save your skin with the unparalleled moisturizing capabilities of nature’s moisture magnet. Get a beautiful, radiant, youthful winter glow with Hyaluronic Acid. VM Dr. Linda Miles D.O. This Holiday Season! Let these looks inspire you to do something a little more daring this year and say hello to a beautiful new you. By sarah byrne Photography Kimberly Metz
Dramatic Red This look is very Bauhaus – bold, abstract and dramatic all in one (with a rocking outfit to match). The model’s sleek look is a brilliant feminine contrast to the lines of the fabric. Get the Look To create this look, start by choosing a solid colour for the shadow. If you don’t like red, opt for any primary or secondary colour. Let your eyes be the primary focus of your face. Add a dramatic liner while keeping the rest of your face neutral. When you choose to play up the eyes, tone down the
lips to balance out the look. A soft gloss or nude lipstick suited for your skin tone is ideal. Is this trend a little too bold for your personal style? Use a feature colour as a liner to jazz up an everyday subtle look. Dip a small angle brush in some water or use a hydrating mist and mix it in your shadow to intensify the colour. Apply liner all the way across the top and/or bottom, depending on your preference. The most important part is that you are comfortable and confident, making it your own style–your own way.

NATURAL GLAM The natural look is an ongoing trend that most of us can all relate to and love. The key to pulling off neutral makeup is to highlight your skin. Whether you prefer a sheer tinted moisturizer or a full-coverage foundation, you need to create the perfect surface. It’s makeup, without looking made up. Get the Look It simply takes a bit of mascara, gloss and – one of my absolute favourite things – blush! Using a soft pink or peach blush, apply it to the apples of your cheeks. Consider trying a mineralized blush to add a touch of glow for the holidays. A touch of lip gloss will finish off the look. Opt for brands that are 100 per cent petroleum free and made of organic vegetable oil.

Zesty Yellow The fall 2013 makeup palette features a blitz of autumn hues ranging from beiges and oranges to never-ending shades of yellow. Zesty yet buttery colours will make you feel like the sixties are coming back. Get the Look To reinvent the era with a modern twist, combine bright colours with an au naturel base, perfectly pink blushed cheeks, and your favourite gloss. Be playful and have fun. Own it in your own way. Try a cream shadow for a different texture and application. Use your fingers and have fun. It’s not always about perfection. For the perfect finishing touch, use a bold black liner and apply a thick line across your eyelid with a bit of a wing on the edge. To up the glam a little (like in this look here) line the bottom as well.

Gorgeous THE BOLD LIP This trend has consistently been very popular. Its modern origins can be traced back to the forties and fifties. The bold lip is a timeless, classic look that takes next to nothing in terms of time and technique. All it takes is a little courage! Pulling off a bold lip can seem daunting to many. I always hear: “I can’t pull that off!” Well, guess what? Yes, you can! Get the Look The secret is taking the time to pick out the perfect product. This means trying on different shades and textures – understanding what you like about one and hate about the other. Consider trying a gloss that can look a lot more playful and casual. A matte lipstick won’t seem quite so bold if a strong lip is new to you. Keep the rest of your face neutral and polished. Try thin black liner across the top lid and some mascara with a touch of blush to finish it off. Less is more; all the focus should go to the lip.

Beauty TERMINOLOGY
Eucalyptus Oil Derived from the leaf of Eucalyptus, this oil is still used by Australian Aboriginals as a traditional remedy for different types of body pains, fever and colds. Eucalyptus oil is native to Australia. It is cultivated worldwide, however, extracted from the leaves of the Eucalyptus through steam distillation. Today, it’s also used as a flavouring agent in foods and as a fragrance component for its ability to contribute to a fresh and clean aroma in products like lotions, perfumes and soaps.
KELP Thriving in underwater “forests”, kelp are large seaweed or algae that require nutrient-rich waters. Kelp contains close to 60 different minerals and a number of vitamins and amino acids, making this seaweed a natural detoxifier with benefits like reducing the cellulite found near the surface of the skin. Kelp is also found in many skin creams and lotions because it has the ability to give the appearance of firmer skin. Algae can draw out any impurities and tighten the skin.

CARMINE Carmine, or carminic acid, is a bright red pigment extracted from the powdered bodies of cochineal scale insects native to South America and Mexico. It is used to naturally colour food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and as it was originally used in the 15th century, to dye fabrics. It is often used to add a pink, red, or purple colour to cosmetics such as lipsticks, blushes, eye shadows and nail polishes.
MACADAMIA OIL Macadamia oil is extracted from the edible nuts of the macadamia tree native to Australia. While many people are very familiar with the macadamia nut and its delicious flavour, macadamia oil is one of the most popular skin and hair care ingredients in the entire world because of its high content of essential fatty acids. Its high oxidative stability makes for an excellent moisturizer.

Choosing the right juice Why a well-informed trip to the juice Aisle can give your heaLtH A Boost
By Dr. Christine Davis, B.Sc., ND
I am always on the hunt for foods that can heal the body naturally. Here are my top four picks for functional juices. Not only are they nutritional powerhouses – they have healing properties that can literally change your life.

Best for Treating: Urinary Tract Infections and Preventing Tooth Decay Treating urinary tract Infections (UTIs) is the most touted benefit of cranberry juice. The compound (proanthocyanidin) found in cranberry juice makes it harder for bacteria to adhere to cell walls in the urinary tract, mouth, stomach, vagina and intestines. If you’re having little success with antibiotics you may want to turn to cranberry juice. Studies have shown that pure cranberry products reduced the overall incidence of UTI’s by 35 per cent in a 12-month period. Other preliminary research suggests cranberries may inhibit H. pylori growth in the stomach, which can help reduce stomach ulcers and gastritis (inflammation in the stomach). Regular consumption of cranberry juice may even be beneficial against antibiotic-resistant strains of E. Coli. What’s less known about cranberry juice is its role in oral health. Recent findings out of the University of California suggest that cranberry juice can inhibit colonization by oral streptococci to the tooth surface and can slow development of dental plaque and tooth decay. For optimal results try a quality brand such as Just Juice 100 per cent Cranberry. TRY: Just Juice 100 per cent Cranberry

Cherry Juice Best for Treating: Insomnia, Arthritis, Muscle Pain and Gout Bonus: It may even help you lose weight! Cherries have been rated as having one of the strongest ORAC values – a number which denotes the strength of the antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds that can protect against tissue destruction (aka oxidative stress) that contribute to aging and disease. Cherries contain an abundance of antioxidant compounds including: anthocyanins and melatonin. Drinking cherry juice before bed has been shown to boost melatonin, our sleep hormone, thereby improving sleep quality and duration. Cherries could also provide an alternative for treating arthritis, gout, and muscle pain. Michigan State University used a dose of 20 tart cherries to inhibit Cox-1 and Cox-2, replacing anti-inflammatory drugs and other pain medicines. Cherry intake over a two-day period was associated with a 35 per cent lower risk of gout attacks. The University of Michigan has studied cherries in animal models and has found lowered cholesterol, triglycerides, body weight and belly fat in the animals fed a cherryenriched diet. It will be interesting to see if there are human studies that corroborate these findings in the future. TRY: Just Juice 100 per cent Organic Sweet Cherry

pomegranate Juice Health Boost: Improve Cholesterol, Cancer Prevention, The pomegranate is one of the oldest known fruits, referenced by many ancient cultures as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life. It is one of the most nutrient dense and antioxidant rich fruits we have. Pomegranate juice, such as Just Juice 100 per cent Organic Pomegranate contains a variety of antioxidants, especially polyphenols that can reduce low-density lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol. It also seems to protect HDL (good) cholesterol from damage. Several small studies have found that it can reduce plaque formation in the arteries and prevent them from becoming thick and stiff. Preliminary evidence also suggests it may lower systolic blood pressure. Other recent studies of heart patients with severe carotid artery blockages have shown blood pressure lowered by over 12 per cent and a 30 per cent reduction in atherosclerotic plaque in comparison to the control group that showed an increase in plaque size of nine per cent. Not only are pomegranates good for your heart and blood vessels; they have been shown to inhibit prostate cancer growth. Studies in rodents have shown that it can decrease the rate of development, growth and spread of prostate cancer. One clinical trial using pomegranate juice in men with prostate cancer showed that study participants who drank the juice had an increase in their prostate-specific antigen (PSA) doubling time, meaning there could be a potential lowering of the aggressiveness of the cancer. Pomegranate juice also holds promise for breast cancer, colon cancer and leukemia. Several in vitro studies have shown an anticancer effect and current clinical trials are hoping to reveal this remarkable effect on humans. TRY: Just Juice 100 per cent Organic Pomegranate
blueberry Juice Health Boost: Eye Health, Cancer Prevention, Weight Loss, Brain Health Blueberries have a long history of use in the native medicines in North America and Europe. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, K, potassium, manganese, and pectin. Blueberries, and their European counterparts bilberries, have long been touted for eye health. In vitro studies show the flavonoids in blueberries can protect retinal cells from age-related and oxidative stress-induced cell death. A study published in Nutrition Research showed that blueberries may inhibit DNA damage by a staggering 18 per cent. A journal submission in Circulation showed that anthocyanin found in blueberries may reduce plaque formation and dilate blood vessels. In addition, the antioxidants in blueberries have also been shown to prevent and fight various cancers including colon cancer and breast cancer. Blueberries may also be an important strategy for those attempting to lose weight. Studies are linking blueberry consumption with improved satiety (feeling of fullness) and better weight management, as well as improved insulin sensitivity for dieters and diabetics. Blueberries seem to also play a role in maintaining mental acuity and preventing neurodegenerative changes in the brain, especially as we age. A study published in the Annals of Neurology looked at sample of more than 16,000 women and concluded that women with highest intake of berries delayed their cognitive aging by as much as 2.5 years. Research using rodents is even suggesting that a blueberryenhanced diet may overcome genetic predispositions to Alzheimer disease. TRY: Just Juice 100 per cent Organic Wild Blueberry

Blue Christmas
Do the holidays leave you feeling more jaded than jolly? Here are some natural ways to give your mood a boost. By Dr. Joyce Johnson ND
M
ost of us feel like we should be happy during the holidays. Sometimes reality doesn’t always play out the way we think it should though. The holiday season can ignite an underlying depression that may have been smoldering inside for months. Feeling down during the festive season is a common problem that can be exacerbated by a variety of factors ranging from the stress of shopping and financial woes to eating the wrong foods and dealing with family drama. 56
While individuals suffering clinical depression need to seek out professional assistance, those experiencing a touch of seasonal blues can usually find a natural way to boost their spirits. Here’s how to have a happy new year – and get through all the festivities that lead up to it.
Mixed Messages Starting as early as October we are bombarded with media messages telling us to feel joyful, giving and merry. It’s easy for individuals to become programmed as to what they should expect and how they need to feel during this time. There may, however, be significant discrepancies between the image of how we should behave or feel and our actual experiences in the real world. Many individuals that suffer depression or the blues during the holidays often experience a sense of not feeling good about themselves or being frustrated about their daily life. This melancholy can lead to mild or severe depression.

Why You’re Feeling Blue Feeling blue during the holidays is a real condition that is often exacerbated by outside conditions. This form of seasonal depression can most often result from being – or feeling – alone. It may be that an individual’s family is far away, or they live in a community without any close ties. In other scenarios, an individual’s family may be close by. However, because of hurtful past experiences they choose not to relive those moments by spending time together during the holidays. The other side of holiday blues can be caused by feelings of obligation. Any type of reunion might bring with it high levels of guilt, distrust or unhappiness. Even though the individual might feel obligated to spend time with family and friends, the get-together might bring with it fighting, agitation and/ or anxiousness.
5. Natural Treatments
The sadness felt during the holiday times can also be triggered by a variety of components in everyday life. These can include: fatigue, financial stress, emotional stress, family commitments, loss of a family member, unrealistic expectations and being away from one’s family. One of the easiest solutions for managing stress and anxiety during the holiday season is to use natural and alternative medicines and treatments. These may include: aromatherapy, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic treatments, dietary supplements, massage therapy, hypnosis, meditation, yoga and relaxation. Music can also be powerful. In fact, music therapy is proving to be an effective approach for reducing grief, stress, anxiety and fear. Music is often considered a natural tranquilizer that works well at transforming the human spirit. Essential oils can also be very powerful in affecting both mood and appetite. Essential oils are extracted from natuBeating the Blues ral plants, herbs and botanicals. Much like the heavy scent of Trying to avoid the holidays rarely has a positive a beautiful red rose, essential oils affect a person’s olfactory effect on one’s mood. Consider giving time instead of gifts and money. The gift of time is often just as appreciative as any costly item. Not spending money during the season will avoid breaking the bank by purchasing gifts that are generally quickly forgotten. 4. Be Around People
Research shows that individuals that spend a significant amount of time alone during the holidays tend to suffer from the blues. Getting out of the home and mingling offers an easy solution to managing the effects of mild depression.

Nature’s Flu Fighter Keep your family healthy all year long with nature’s antibiotic

p to five times a year the same parent will seek Naturopathic treatment advice because school is missed, work is cancelled, and social occasions have been turned down. The culprit? Cold and flu. While a good night’s sleep, proper nutrition and down time are your body’s first line of defense, the next piece of advice to prevent and treat infections is a stabilized bioactive allicin garlic supplement called Allimax. Why it works When fresh garlic is cut or crushed, a sulphur compound, allicin, combines with an enzyme, allinase and a chemical reaction starts. The first compound that is formed is allicin. It is the allicin that, in total or in part, is responsible for the antifungal,
58
antiviral and antibacterial properties attributed to garlic. Allicin-sensitive viruses are: the human cytomegalovirus, influenza B, herpes simplex virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, vaccinia virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, and human rhinovirus type 2. Allicin-Stable Technology With resistence to antibiotics on the rise, researchers turned to allicin-stable products and, in the past several years, clinical reports showing efficacy against the superbug, MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) have been published. MRSA is a nasty bacterium, forever changing its structure and developing resistance to many pharmaceutical antibiotics. In 2004, a study reported in the British Journal

of Biomedical Science showed that stabilized allicin killed 30 strains of MRSA. And, three cured case histories of patients having MRSA, were delivered at the American Society of Microbiology, Atlanta, USA, and the European Congress on Clinical Microbiology, Chemotherapy and Infectious Diseases, at Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2005. Allimax was the first of its kind to conduct a double blind study on the use of just 1 capsule a day to prevent the common cold virus. Research conducted by The Garlic Centre*, based on a 90 day trial of 144 volunteers, conclusively demonstrated that allicin, garlic’s crucial active ingredient, will provide invaluable protection against this destructive and irritating virus. The placebo group suffered 65 colds while the active group suffered only 24 colds. The most interesting results of the study found that the severity, duration and symptoms lasted an average of 5.5 days for the placebo group and 1.5 for the active group. Allimax has the potential to assist the immune system in a number of different ways, stimulating immune cells, killing pathogens and detoxifying carcinogens. Fascinating history It is thought that garlic originated in the Kirgiz Desert in Siberia around 7000 years ago. It was imported into Ancient Egypt to feed the slaves who build the pyramids and to keep them fit, healthy and free from infections – a fact that was inscribed on the Great Pyramid of Cheops in 3000 B.C. The Egyptian ‘Ebers Codex’ papyrus from 1500 B.C. was also found recommending garlic as a cure for 22 different medical condi-
tions including: heart problems, headaches, bites, worms and tumors. In fact, the only slave revolt in Egypt was by labourers over a lack of garlic when the Nile flooded the garlic fields. Since that time garlic has played an important part in almost every civilization across the globe. In Ancient Greece, garlic was consumed in large quantities to improve circulation and build strength. The first Olympian athletes consumed vast quantities before a competition to build stamina and keep free from illness. Dioscorides a Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist and author of a five-volume encyclopedia about medicine, wrote in 80 A.D. of garlic’s ability to “clear the arteries” and was held in esteem as the founder of the modern pharmacy. He dispensed garlic to treat rabid dog bites, snake bites, infections, bronchitis and cough. In 1665 A.D. the London College of Physicians recommended garlic for the Great Plague while at the same time, leading English physician, Sydenham, used garlic in Africa to cure typhoid fever & cholera. In 1942, during WWII, penicillin and other sulfa drugs were scarce and garlic was used as an antiseptic to disinfect battle wounds, prevent gangrene and cure dysentery. In traditional Chinese Medicine garlic is the mainstay for many common ailments. In the last 50 years an enormous amount of research has been published all over the world to confirm the many beneficial properties of garlic and the components that are generated when garlic is cut, crushed, cooked or processed. With resistance to antibiotics on the rise, researchers turned to stabilized allicin and in the past several years, clinical reports showing efficacy against the superbug, MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) have been published. The fact that stabilized bioactive allicin can have an antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral benefits means that there are so many uses available for this product. Allimax has shown proven results in the treatment of cold sores, warts, fungal nails and candida.

TImeless Beauty Actor ANDIE MACDOWELL shares her secrets for looking and feeling great at any age.
I
By Bonnie Siegler
It’s been almost 20 years since Andie MacDowell enthralled audiences – and Hugh Grant – in Four Weddings and a Funeral, but the five-foot-eight actor and model still manages to turn heads wherever she goes. Here’s how MacDowell manages the stress in her life and why she still looks drop dead gorgeous at 55.
Beauty Secrets MacDowell is honest in acknowledging that her looks are a still a big part of her job. In addition to exercise, MacDowell maintains a svelte figure by doing a variety of cleanses and getting at least eight hours of sleep a night. Cortisol and serotonin levels are important for lowering anxiety and achieving a sound sleep. To help keep her hormones in check, MacDowell regularly eats red or purple potatoes. “I read that eating potatoes (with the skin on) at night helps build serotonin so you sleep better,” says MacDowell.
Stress Management MacDowell’s latest project, a Hallmark Channel series Cedar Cove, has relocated the actor to Vancouver – which suites her just fine. British Columbia provides the perfect backdrop for a healthy lifestyle and allows MacDowell to indulge in one of her favourite pastimes – hiking. “Exercise is the best thing for me in terms of reducing any stress For dinner, MacDowell cuts up a variety of fresh vegin my life,” says MacDowell. “I’m fortunate because I actually enjoy etables, with potatoes, and steams them all together. “I it and have never been one for sitting.” Hiking may be one of her first sprinkle on a spice called Ghost Salt or add salsa, and top loves, but her schedule doesn’t always allow for it. orna Vanderhaeghe’s self-titled company is likely a little younger than you would expect. In just over a decade the entrepreneur has turned a small supplement start-up into a company that landed her a top five position on Profit’s list of female entrepreneurs for 2013.
Her e-newsletter has over 50,000 subscribers and her forum got so big that they had to temporarily suspend it when it topped 500 questions a day. So what’s the secret to Vanderhaeghe’s success? Creating a women-friendly company in every way, educating the consumer – and creating products that work.
Building the Brand
Vanderhaeghe didn’t blindly jump into the nutritional supplement industry. She had already owned and sold Klaire Labs Canada. Vanderhaeghe had also served as the marketing manager for Flora distributors, founded a nutrition course program and co-authored the international best seller The Immune System Cure. With degrees in both biochemistry and nutrition, Vanderhaeghe has always known what she’s doing when it comes to nutrition. Women would come to her lectures and ask questions about hormonal health. Afterwards people would come up to Vanderhaeghe and say they were unable to find all the supple-

ments she was recommending. Around the same time, Vanderhaeghe developed uterine fibroids. She started searching for solutions to her own problem and looking into ways to provide the products she was recommending to others – and Lorna Vanderhaeghe Health Solutions, Inc. was born.
A Family-Focused Company
Vanderhaeghe tries to bring her family and work values to her office. “We have a very young staff. The average age is 27,” says Vanderhaeghe. As a result, there are a lot of new moms. “We do everything we can to accommodate women with babies so they can continue to work.” Some moms work from home and one even has a crib in her office. “Moms need flexibility. My business is very pro women and pro family.
“Our products work,” says Vanderhaeghe. “Most people look at how to mask the problem. I look at the root problem. Everything is based on science.” Vanderhaeghe seeks to find patterns in illness and solve these by creating products that are based on scientific studies. “So many problems come from hormonal imbalance,” says Vanderhaeghe. “Often having too much estrogen in relation to other hormones. I research how we can balance hormones naturally.” Vanderhaeghe’s business is also different from many others in that it’s rooted in family. “Back when I had Klaire Labs, my kids used to help me pack boxes after school. I think it’s important to balance career with kids, and for your kids to see that their mother works hard,” says Vanderhaeghe. Vanderhaeghe has four children and six grandchildren. Her partner’s three teenage sons also live with the couple part time. Her house has always been busy – everyone always knew she had time for them though. “You need to be there at 3:00 for your kids. It’s so important,” says Vanderhaeghe. The key to mixing work and family is setting boundaries. “My kids grew up with two phones in the house,” says Vanderhaeghe. There was a work phone and a home phone. “They knew when the red phone was in use no one could talk or fight.”
Fitting It All In “You have to realize what’s not important,” says Vanderhaeghe. “When I had young kids I remember staying up until midnight for nights on end to make Halloween costumes from scratch.” It’s okay to go out and buy a costume. Does it really matter if you make it from scratch? Sure it’s nice. In the long run will it make a difference in your kids life? Is it worth stressing yourself out over? “You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to make a cookie with every kid’s in your child’s class name on it for Christmas. Prioritize and delegate.” Vanderhaeghe admits that one of the hardest things for her to do was to hire a cleaning lady. When she did, she made so much more time for important things. “Find that work and life balance,” says Vanderhaeghe. “Your kids are only little for a very short time. Five years is gone in a blink and you never get it back.” You may not be able to have it all, but you can have all the important stuff. VM

Ime Ukoka, her partner and father of her two-year-old son, Kez Sunday Udoka, is on the road with the San Antonio Spurs basketball team. Kez and his big brother Massai (13) are sound asleep. This is Long’s time – and, as any busy mom knows, alone time (even in the wee hours of the morning) is precious. Long starts her day with 20 minutes of meditation. “I set my intention on what I need to accomplish so that when the kids get up I’ve already done the work I need to do in order for everyone to have a good day,” says Long. “Don’t get me wrong, I still feel frazzled at times. “Life is never perfect – there are always challenges, always moments • More Peaks Than Valleys After more than 20 years spent in the spotlight of television and film, Long has had to learn to block out the noise and focus on what’s important. The five-foot-two actor was born in Brooklyn, New York; then moved with her single mom to Los Angeles to find initial success as a Disney star and on the soap opera Guiding Light. Her audience reach is now broader than most actors. You may know her as Don Cheadle’s love interest on Showtime’s House of Lies, or as the star of movies including: Made In America, Soul Food, and Big Mamma’s House. Going back a little, Long played Will Smith’s long-time girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Brandi in Boyz n the Hood. (One of my favourite movies of all time.)

Throughout her journey Long, now 43, admits to experiencing peaks and valleys both professionally and personally. “If you don’t experience ups and downs in life, you’re downright boring!” says Long. “You need to be able to balance out your mind, body and spiritual sides on a regular basis. For me, the spiritual side is meditation and prayer. Working out is for the body and the emotional part is just understanding that I can handle it, even when it’s difficult.” Long has always been a strong, independent woman who has a solid grip on life. “Listen, I am probably one of the most sensitive people. I cry at the drop of a hat, my feelings get hurt easily. It’s because I’m vulnerable, and I want to live my life being vulnerable when I need to be.” On this sun-soaked morning, with minimal make-up, jeans and comfortable tee, Long turns serious for a moment, admit-

of worry because people have free will and we have to honour that” ting that the ability to recognize her vulnerability has ultimately given her strength. “Because it’s a choice. It’s not that I’m vulnerable because I’m not strong or I don’t know how to handle things. I’m vulnerable because that’s the only way I believe you continue to learn, re-create yourself and re-generate, and understand that life is not always easy. When it’s great – enjoy it! And when it’s difficult, just know that you can get through it.” Long feels there’s nothing like parenthood to put life into a clearer perspective. “I can’t imagine life without my kids. It is a challenge sometimes making time for myself. I love going to the movies with Ime whenever we can; I love music. I love traveling and I love good food with a bottle of wine with friends. I love interior decorating. So making moments for all of these things is difficult at times.”
• Making Time for Fitness Taking care of your body is part of any balanced life. Long opts for a mix of Pilates, yoga and boxing – each with their own benefits. “I do more yoga now than Pilates because it goes along with my meditation. Boxing is very aggressive so when you just want to get it out or you’re frustrated about something, just making your body have to work that hard is great. Afterwards, I feel wow! I just kicked some butt and it feels great. Now just let me go kick life’s butt and keep it going.” • Eating for Pleasure – and Health Long loves food. She’s aware of how to balance her eating with her body’s nutritional needs. “I choose quinoa, avocado, fresh fruit, vegetables – all mostly from the local farmer’s market because the produce is better and you know what you’re eating.” Long tries to eat as gluten-free as possible and to include more protein in her diet. “I am a blood type that needs to eat more meat. I was raised a vegetarian so it’s an interesting mix.” On any given night, you may find the working mom whipping up turkey tacos in the family kitchen. “I make the best ground turkey tacos on the planet,” she boasts. “The secret is Spike, a spice I put in everything and a dollop of regular sour cream. They are absolutely divine. I don’t always have the sour cream because I’m constantly trying to make room for the chocolate chip cookies for dessert.” • A Balanced Life “Everyone should try to balance themselves out as much as possible,” says Long. In addition to eating healthy and exercise, Long recently gotten involved in homeopathy. “The whole idea is very intriguing to me. I’ve learned so much about the importance of the adrenals – working moms especially can relate to this. When you are depleted, your body doesn’t function as quickly and efficiently as it should. Building that part of yourself up by going straight to the cells is much more effective,” says Long. “Modern medicine means you take a pill for this, a pill for that, but it’s just really a band-aide for a cellular issue. What I’m doing is more

My mom has a master’s in art and we still had a tough life. So when amazing things started to happen in my life, I immediately wanted to share that with young women who may or may not be a part of the community that I grew up in. To sit down and talk with someone for 70
20 minutes is a personal obligation that I feel I have gifted in a real positive way that will hopefully help. Long’s journey is constantly unfolding before her eyes. The lengthy ride has given aim at finding, accepting and loving herself for the woman she is today. “Don’t get me wrong, life is never perfect – there are always challenges, always moments of worry because people have free will and we have to honour that. The simplest of recipes to make your holiday season sophisticated and effortless.
It’s the time of year when the invitations begin to circulate, holiday festivities are being planned and guest lists are being compiled. If you’re thinking of hosting people in your home why not make it as simple as possible. For some people
Ingredients:
entertaining can be a daunting
•F latbread or Greek-style pitas • Fig jam • About 1 cup (250 mL) blue cheese, you can try Gorgonzola (Italy) or St. Agur (France) • About 10 pieces of thinly sliced prosciutto, each slice cut into four pieces • A generous handful of arugula
prospect, but with a little advanced preparation you can throw a stylishly chic party with little effort. Having an assortment of simply prepared, yet flavourful hors d’oeuvres is the key. And to accomplish this you’ll want to use fresh, colourful ingredients in dishes that are relaxed and not too contrived. The recipes below will help you achieve your goal. Each recipe makes enough for 10 people as an hors d’oeuvre (about 2 pieces per person). 74
Fig and Blue Cheese Flatbread
Directions:
There really is no real “recipe” for this dish, it’s about as easy as making a sandwich. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Generously spread flatbread with fig jam, dot the bread with pieces of blue cheese and prosciutto. Bake flatbread in middle of oven place until warmed through and cheese has softened and bread is lightly toasted, about 8 minutes. Remove from oven, sprinkle with arugula and cut into wedges.

spicy lime and honey shrimp Ingredients:
• 2 tbsp (30 mL) vegetable oil • 2 tsp (10 mL) fresh red chili pepper, thinly sliced (the long thin ones!) • 2 lb large shrimp*, peeled and deveined • Zest and juice of 1 lime • 1⁄3 cup (80 mL) honey • 1⁄4 cup (60 mL) fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped • Lime wedges for garnish
* shrimp sizes are determined by how many come in a pound, therefore the larger the number on the bag the more shrimp there will be, but they will also be smaller. The most common retail sizes are 21-25’s (jumbo) and 41-50’s (medium). For this recipe the bigger the better.
Directions:
Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat, add chili pepper and cook for 1 minute. Add shrimp, lime zest, lime juice and honey. Increase heat to high and stir, cook until shrimp just turn pink and liquid has reduced to a light glaze. About 4 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature with toothpicks and lime wedges.

GLUTEN-FREE CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES
Make your own gluten-free, fair trade and organic chocolate truffles—they’re so delicious and easy to make, your taste buds will ask for more! • by camino Makes approx. 20 truffles
INGREDIENTS 1 bag of Cuisine Camino Semi-sweet chocolate chips* (225g) ½ cup of organic whipping cream or fair trade and/or organic coconut milk (vegan option) 1 tsp of organic vanilla extract 1 cup of Cuisine Camino Bittersweet chocolate chips* 4 tsp of organic margarine *Now available gluten free and allergen free!
DIRECTIONS 1. Empty a package of Cuisine Camino Semi-sweet chocolate chips in a heat resistant glass bowl. In a saucepan, heat the whipping cream—or the coconut milk—over medium heat until it reaches boiling point. Pour the cream over the chocolate chips and mix with a wooden spoon. For a uniform texture, place the bowl on low heat and stir until chocolate is completely melted and smooth. 2. Add vanilla extract and let the mixture (ganache) cool at room temperature. Refrigerate for 1.5 to 2 hours. Texture should be firm. 3. Using a small ice cream scoop or two spoons, form 20 balls of ganache (they don’t have to be perfectly round at that stage) and place them on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Refrigerate for 1 hour. 4. Using a double boiler, melt Cuisine Camino Bittersweet chocolate chips with the margarine. On low heat, keep stirring until a smooth chocolate texture is reached. Remove the cookie sheet from the fridge. With your fingers, gently adjust the ganache balls to make them rounder if necessary.
5. Dip the ganache balls into the melted chocolate to coat them and place them back onto the cookie sheet. If the melted chocolate becomes harder, return the bowl to the double boiler and stir until texture is soft again. If you would like to add toppings onto your truffles, do it while the chocolate coating is still warm so the toppings can stick to the chocolate. See our topping suggestions below. 6. Refrigerate truffles for another 20 to 30 min. Truffles are best served cold.
SUGGESTED TOPPINGS Depending on your food allergies, intolerances and your tastes, you can be as creative as you want to make your own perfect truffles. Camino suggests the following toppings: cocoa powder, shredded coconut, cinnamon, chili powder, nuts (whole or crumbs), pistachio and sea salt, or simply sea salt. Enjoy!

here has been much talk about chocolate and wine pairing over the last number of years. It makes sense, as interest in wine grows why wouldn’t people start to consider its pairing potential with one of the world’s favourite foods, chocolate? This is a debate with many opinions. There are those who are strong believers in the partnership of wine and chocolate, and those who are against it. I fall somewhere in the middle of the discussion. There is something There is something instinctual that instinctual that makes us want to put wine and chocomakes us want to put late together. It’s like setting up your two favourite pals on a blind date – you love wine and chocolate both of them. That doesn’t, however, together. mean they’ll like each other. If you’re simply looking to have a bit of fun by matching up wine and chocolate then the match doesn’t have to be perfect. Just relish in the fact that you’re indulging in two of life’s great pleasures. If, however, you want to get more serious you need to tread lightly. The wrong wine and chocolate can result in very unpleasant effects in the mouth, and will spoil the taste of both the wine and the chocolate. The key point to consider when pairing chocolate with wine is its cocoa percentage. This will determine its amount of tannin (a bitter compound found in grapes, walnuts, chocolate, black tea). Also consider the sweetness level. Tannins and sugar are what will have to match up properly with the wine. Otherwise these two components can destroy its taste. When in doubt the best choice for chocolate is a sweet dessert wine. On the other hand, the riskiest endeavour is to match dark chocolate (high in tannin) with dry red wine (no sweetness, and usually high in tannins). Never one to shy away from a challenge I’ve chosen to match an Australian Shiraz from Mitolo, a winery in McLaren Vale with an extra dark chocolate from Camino Fair Trade Organic. The two together create a really luxurious sensation in the mouth. The high alcohol percentage in the wine mimics the velvety texture of the chocolate, and helps to tame the tannins’ mouth-gripping effect. The notes of cocoa and eucalyptus in the wine seem to be elevated by the chocolate, and they both have a similar length and weight, which is important. You never want one side of the pairing to overwhelm the other; you should always still be able to appreciate both partners. So next time you open a bottle of red wine, and there’s some The wrong wine and good quality chocolate chocolate can result lying around have a little in very unpleasant nibble. See what happens, effects in the mouth, you might have a winand will spoil the ning combination on your taste of both the wine hands. And like I always and the chocolate say, even a bad match is a chance to learn. VM

Ingredients • 1 lb SUNSET® Kumato™ Tomatoes • 12 large oranges • 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced • 2 ripe but firm avocados
SUNSET® Kumato™ Caprese Salad
This salad is remarkably simple, but impressive in its presentation. Dazzle your friends with this dish as a gourmet starter to any meal. Makes 4 servings Ingredients: • 4 SUNSET® Kumato™ Tomatoes • 4 medium size fresh mozzarella balls (the kind that are packed in water), drained well • 1 small bunch fresh basil • 4 Tbsp balsamic glaze* • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil • coarse sea salt & fresh cracked black pepper Directions Cut each tomato into four slices. Cut each mozzarella ball into three slices. On individual plates, stack the tomato slices alternating with the mozzarella slices and basil leaves – starting and finishing with a tomato. Reserve extra basil for garnish. Drizzle each tomato mozzarella stack with one tablespoon of the balsamic glaze and half a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper. Garnish with additional basil. Chef’s Notes: *Balsamic glaze is found in many wellstocked grocery stores and specialty food shops. If you are unable to find it, then you can make it easily. Combine 3/4 cup balsamic vinegar and 2 Tbsp sugar in a small pan. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Reduce heat to low and slowly simmer for 10 to 12 minutes to reduce liquid to about 1/4 cup or a light syrup texture. Watch carefully so as not to over-reduce. Store covered at room temperature until needed.

Poppy seed Vinaigrette • 3 Tbsp white wine vinegar • 2 Tbsp Dijon mustard • 3 Tbsp honey • 1/4 tsp Tabasco or a pinch of cayenne pepper • 1/4 cup salad oil or light olive oil • 2 tsp poppy seeds • 3/4 tsp salt Directions Halve the tomatoes and then cut into 1/4-inch slices. Place tomatoes, oranges, onions and avocados into a large bowl. In a small bowl, combine all dressing ingredients and whisk together until smooth, then drizzle over salad. Osteoarthritis, All Joints, Relief also guaranteed for
Rheumatoid, Sciatica, Back pain Pain Free in 2 Weeks
This is what happened to me personally after suffering for years. I spent $2000 on pills, creams, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnetic devices etc. No relief until I took specially processed shark cartilage for 2 weeks and all pain was gone. Realizing that there are 5 million men and women suffering in Canada , I started promoting shark cartilage to help others. I have helped hundreds of thousands of men and women around the world with a specially processed shark cartilage that doesn’t lose the active ingredients through chemical treatments. I am exporting it to 80 countries. Most need 3 bottles or 2-3 weeks and after that go on a maintenance dose of just a few capsules. However, still others may need 4-6 weeks, which is still quick relief, if a person suffered for years. Everybody is different. Look at the box with a guarantee printed in big letters. It works in most cases as stated. It is a natural treatment and no serious side effects were ever reported. No other arthritis product we know has a printed guarantee like ours, because none of them work well enough to be guaranteed.
Pain killers are all high-risk
states Mount Sinai Medical School newsletter October 2013. Lancet medical journal writes the same thing. So, why do health professionals still recommend them? They list the well known NSAIDs in their newsletter. They all cause internal bleedings, strokes and heart attacks if frequently taken. Some also cause kidney and liver failure. The vicious fact is this, they must be taken frequently on a daily basis, if a person has arthritis pain, and thus they are extremely dangerous. Bell Shark Cartilage #1 has none of these side effects.
Osteoarthritis Actual results by people:
<I have extensive degeneration in my spine, which caused much pain in my back and hips to the extent that I had difficulty just to walk. After starting Bell Shark Cartilage #1 eight years ago I am happy to say that I’m back walking 2-3 miles a day with no pain. I am very grateful. I also take Bell Shark Liver oil #51 and I have no more colds or flus. Alice Courvoisier, 76, Cremona, AB <Cancelled Knee replacement I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK <Tried another brand and my pain came back. 2 weeks on BELL brand and the pain is gone again. (Note: Bell Shark Cartilage is processed differently to preserve the natural active ingredients.) Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON <Shark Cartilage, not glucosamine I was taking shark cartilage and glucosamine at the same time and couldn’t be sure which was making my joints more comfortable. After being out of your shark cartilage for several days, stiffness and pain were returning and I knew. I asked my wife to order more shark cartilage and the 6 days were a long wait. I will not wait to run out of it again! William G. Elliott, Hannover, ON <Many people on our website write: “Can walk again for hours”;”Can climb stairs without hanging on to railing”;”First time in 15 years can sleep at night”…hundreds of testimonials all with full names and towns. Shark bones/cartilage was a previously thrown away by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught for their cartilage. Don’t let any activist confuse you. More than 300 true testimonials you will find on our website. NO money is paid for testimonials.
Rheumatoid arthritis Truthful experiences:
The Toronto Star Newspaper had a full page feature article in September saying that a young woman with rheumatoid arthritis takes one hour each morning to get dressed because of joint pain. A young man in Penetang wrote us that he had already joint replacements and Bell Shark Cartilage #1 was the first thing that brought him relief. A young Toronto woman wrote us a similar story. Here are a few detailed testimonials: Stop needless suffering. Bell can help:<Prostate inflammation relief in days ask for Tea #4a < Incontinence, bladder infection relief for women Tea #4b < Men can perform like in their 20s ask for Eroxil #6 < Women regain their desire like in their honeymoon guaranteed Erosyn #7 < Intestinal cleansing #10 < Headache relief all types in 30 minutes Migraid #15 < All allergies relief guaranteed #24 <Wrist pain relief #30 < Bladder & Yeast infection #31 < HRT Menopause hot flashes sweats #33 < Super IQ Brain Function #36 < Natural blood pressure relief #26< Nursing mother’s to increase milk flow #39 < Blood sugar control helps with weight control #40 <Prevent colds #51 < Immune booster key supplement for total health #52 <Stress Relief at work or home #66
<Allison Bergamorto, Winnipeg, MB lebfam@shaw.ca wrote us: “March 2010 I have been on many different medications for my rheumatoid arthritis and Bell Shark Cartilage #1 helped me more than all the meds.” Normally we don’t follow up on testimonials. We did in this case and she answered September 2013: “I will answer freely and say, yes, I am still taking my Bell Shark Cartilage for my rheumatoid arthritis and if I miss a day or so, I surely feel the difference. I also recommend it to many people at the NPN 80042283 Helps to gym and at work. Many blessings to who ever invented the stuff. I feel blessed.” <Avril Goldie, 68, Stoney relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. Creek, ON wrote us: “I suffered for 24 years with rheumatoid arthritis and have been through hell. Three President’s own story: different specialists came to the same conclusion that I 15 years ago I started to should have many joints replaced. Jerch completely after spending many thousands of dollars for medication that didn’t work. The surgeries would have been a huge amount of money to the tax payers. “ More on the website. I feel bad that in our advertising lately we overlooked to specifically mention that Bell Shark Cartilage #1 may help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers or we refund the money. We could have helped probably a few thousand people with rheumatoid arthritis this year alone. I personally feel a greater satisfaction to help more people than making more sales.
Sciatica, Pain running from your back down your leg, calves and feet
I had sciatica for many years and tried everything. Pain was so severe I could not get out of the car without grabbing the roof of the car and pulling myself up and out. Same to get into the car. Worst pain I ever had in my life. On Saturdays only I would take 5 Tylenol No. 3 narcotic pills to be able to function for recreational family use. However, I realized that I cannot continue this as I would get hooked on these narcotic pills and then be in still greater trouble. I experimented with many things and this is how I got on Bell Shark Cartilage. On the Bell website we have a number of people that wrote us that Bell Shark Cartilage helped them with their sciatica. I refund your money, if it does not help you as well as it did for me. Based on refund claims it helps almost all people.
Wrist Pain Testimonials on website:
Many people working with their hands including tradesmen or even people typing daily may get wrist pain, also called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This colourful soup is the perfect starter to your next dinner party. The tangy lime cream swirl plays nicely against the sweetness of the peppers. Serves 4 as an entrée or 6 as a starter
Ingredients •2 (8-oz) packages SUNSET® Sweet Twister™ Peppers (about 4 – 5 peppers), stemmed, seeded and cut into 1” pieces • 3 Tbsp olive oil • 1/2 cup diced onions • 1 tbsp chopped garlic • 2 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1/2 to 1 tsp hot sauce • 2 cups chicken broth • 3/4 cup heavy cream or half-and-half • 2 tsp cornstarch • 1 Tbsp water • Salt to taste • Garnish: Chopped fresh parsley or thinly sliced chives Lime Cream • 1/4 cup sour cream • 1 Tbsp fresh lime juice • 1 Tbsp water Directions Soup In a large soup kettle, heat oil over medium-high heat until hot then add peppers and onions. Cook, stirring often, for about eight to 10 minutes or until tender. Add garlic, coriander and cumin; cook for about 30 seconds while stirring. Add hot sauce and broth and bring to a boil. Add cream, bring to a simmer then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 10 minutes. In a small bowl mix the cornstarch and water then stir the mixture into the soup. Stirring constantly, return the soup to a simmer to thicken. Very carefully puree the hot soup in a blender in small batches until very smooth. Taste for salt and season to taste—saltiness will depend on whether you used canned or homemade chicken broth. Keep warm until ready to serve. LIME CREAM In a small bowl whisk together the sour cream, lime juice and water until smooth. Serve the soup in bowls and drizzle a swirl of lime cream over soup. Garnish with parsley or chives if desired.

Occupation: Author. I write books for children and young adults. What’s your secret food vice? Potato chips . . . who doesn’t love potato chips. What is your number one comfort food? Boiled potatoes and toast. Pretty boring What is your biggest food challenge? I drink mainly water and tea, but every now and again an ice cold Coke on ice calls out my name. I cover my ears and close my eyes and refuse to listen. What keeps you eating a balanced diet? My wife. My desire to live forever. The bathroom scale. A need to keep moving forward and staying healthy enough to do that. Any allergies or dislikes? No allergies. I really don’t like squid though. Who was the brave or troubled soul that decided that was food? What must you always have in your fridge? Cold water, chocolate ice cream (although I guess that’s in the freezer), fresh butter, and thinly sliced roast turkey What are some of your go-to meals? Stir fry, breakfast for every meal, lots of pasta especially homemade lasagna Strangest food you’ve tried? I had crocodile once in Kenya. They always say that exotic foods taste like chicken. Crocodile tastes like chicken dipped in mucus and rolled in slime. What’s your favourite dish or food to eat in the winter? Homemade stews and soups, lots and lots of pasta dishes What is your favourite meal to make for guests in your home? My favourite meal for company depends on what they would like – are they vegetarians, what do they like, are they trying to lose weight, are they meat eaters. The meal is always about what the guest wants. What is your favourite ingredient to cook with and why? Garlic and butter. Basically cardboard would taste good with garlic and butter (and maybe some cheese on top) What have you been busy with over the last year? I have six books coming out next year including the first two in gigantic trilogy. The first book comes out in January and is called The Rule of Three. What’s next for you? Keep writing, keep eating. / HOLIDAY 2013

She’s the bomb
odi Balfour, better known as Gladys Witham on the wartime series Bomb Girls, has a life that can best be described as balanced chaos. In addition to Bomb Girls, the actor has two mini-series coming out in 2014– The Best Laid Plans and The Husband. She is also an avid yoga enthusiast and plays the ukulele in an indie band. Here’s how Balfour fits it all in and makes time for fun and health. ment and lifestyle of the Vancouver-area agree with the 26-year-old actor. “I find getting outside helps a lot in getting a perspective on life,” says Balfour. In fact, her favorite pastimes include hikes and bike rides to Vancouver’s Stanley Park or the beach with backpack of snacks, a book to read and a partner in crime along for the ride. “I try to do this a number of times a week, depending upon weather and I find it’s more than just exercise. It clears my head to breathe some fresh air and just take in the environment a little bit,” says Balfour. Balfour is a bit standoffish when it comes to a regular exercise routine,

Switching to GREEK Viva talks with Thu Pham, Director of Research and Development for Olympic Dairy Products Inc. about how Greek yogurt is made and why it’s so good for you. By nancy ripton Q. What is Greek yogurt? A. Greek yogurt refers to a style of yogurt that is rich in texture, high in protein content, and is typically high in fat. Q. When did people start eating Greek yogurt? A. Greek yogurt has been widely consumed in the Middle East and Balkan Regions for ages and has only been introduced to North America diet about a decade ago. Q. How is Greek yogurt made? A. Traditionally, Greek yogurt is made by placing yogurt in cloth bags and straining overnight to concentrate the solids. The process is time consuming and labour intensive, making mass production for commercialization a challenge. Over the years, technological advancements have enabled the commercialization of Greek yogurt through innovative methods such as ultrafiltration and the application of milk protein. The ultrafiltration method uses membrane technology to concentrate the solids. The application of milk protein involves the use of powder to increase protein content and, with the aid of shear equipment, generates thick and smooth texture without by-products. Q. What type of milk is Greek yogurt created from? A. Generally, skim milk is used in ultrafiltration, as it can be concentrated up to seven times. As a result, ultrafiltration increases the concentration of protein, while reducing sugar content because lactose has been permeated through the membranes.
“Ultrafiltration increases the concentration of protein, while reducing sugar content.”
istockphoto.com
Q. What is the difference between Greek yogurt and Greek style yogurt? A. Through my research I am not aware of a clear definition for Greek-style yogurt. However, Olympic has a line of Krema 11%MF products that we call Greek style. The product is rich, thick, and creamy like Greek yogurt, however it is not processed using the above methods. Q. What are the health benefits of Greek yogurt? A. Greek yogurt has high nutritional values. Whereas conventional yogurt would have protein around five per cent, Greek yogurt’s protein count is about 10 per cent. Also, the sugar content is less in Greek yogurt. There is also more calcium and phosphorus in Greek yogurt.

instead choosing activities that are also fun for her. The former dancer still takes the occasional dance class. “My ballet shoes are hanging in my closet yearning to be used,” says Balfour. She is also passionate about yoga and practices hot yoga five or six mornings a week. “I do this first thing in the morning. I find yoga really helps get my thoughts out of my head and I find when I’ve done a class and I’m out by 10:00 a.m., I’ve communed with myself, said an intention for the day, stretched my body, breathed a lot and it’s just a great way to set myself up for a good day.” Why Dairy Had to Go A good start to Balfour’s day also beings with a fresh raw juice or a smoothie, sometimes with her favorite guilty pleasure added. “Yeah, I love peanut butter,” says Balfour. “I’ll add it to my smoothies sometimes or snack with a cut up apple. I guess having peanut butter [and other guilty pleasures] in moderation–and really enjoying them when I do–allows me to lead a balanced life,” she says. Balfour eats healthy for the most part and her nutritional staples include: an ample selection of herbal and green teas, lots of fruit and vegetables (“for my juices and smoothies”), oats, brown rice and quinoa. “I recently stopped eating dairy so no more cheese and crackers in the house. I love cheese, yogurt and all that stuff but I found it wasn’t agreeing with me. It had a bad effect on my skin and after two months of no dairy, I saw a significant difference – for the better – in my skin.” For dairy substitutions, Balfour turns to almond or homemade hemp milk. “I’ve found I’m not really missing it much – except the cheese,” she laughs. “Maybe someday in the future, I’ll begin slowly adding back in some dairy like sheep or goat’s milk or cheese, but not cow’s milk.” Growing up with a physician father wagging his finger at her for forgetting vitamins and supplements, Balfour feels she leads a rather healthy lifestyle, albeit a busy one. “I aspire to live a balanced life; I thrive when I’m focusing and putting attention on some sort of stability and working at finding a healthy balance,” she says. “But being an actor and a nomad of sorts, one can indulge in organized chaos every now and then. So I guess I balance myself between organized chaos and a very calm, routine based life. It sways from one another every now and then, but mostly I put the emphasis on finding structure, routine and balance where I can.” The Perfect Mix Her to-do list for the day speaks volumes for Balfour’s lifestyle. “I did yoga earlier and am going to have brunch with my roommate. Then a bit of a band practice this afternoon because we’re having friends over tomorrow night to play some music for them. Then I have my emails, which I try to do every day where I give myself a three-hour time period for 102

administration stuff. This evening I’m going downtown to listen to a bluegrass and honkytonk band with my friend.” Whew! Balfour laughs after ticking off her day’s goals, realizing how jam-packed it must sound. “Balanced living is a good mixture of allowing yourself everything you love, disciplining yourself with things you know are good for you and keeping an open mind on what you need; what your body and mind are telling you. Listening to yourself informs balanced living more than anything else.” VM

Happy ✈Travels
How to make your family’s air travel a whole lot easier – and happier – this Holiday Season
By elizabeth pantley
I
f you’re afraid of turning into “one of those families” we’ve all seen aboard planes with squalling, unruly children, don’t worry – with a little forethought and preparation you can get to your holiday destination with minimal stress and a happy family. Here’s how: Sweat the Details Before you Travel When you’re travelling with small children, the details of your vacation can mean the difference between success and disaster.
Great ideas when planning:
1
Aim for direct flights so you can avoid changing planes. If you have to make a change, avoid short layovers that give you too little time to get from gate to gate; conversely, avoid long layovers that require lots of idle time in airports. If your child is restless before they get on the plane, the flight will be a disaster.
2
When you make your reservations, ensure you provide the agent with the ages of all passengers. You may learn some important rules, such as:
104 vivamagonline.com
Baby Travel.indd 104
• Regulations allow only one lap-child per adult. If you’re traveling with two children and only one adult, one child will require a seat of his own. • Some airlines don’t allow newborns to fly so check age requirements. • Some airlines offer discounted prices for children’s tickets. • Most airplanes have only one extra oxygen mask in each row, which means you can only seat one lap-child per row. If two adults are traveling with two children under two, consider sitting across the aisle from each other, or in the seat directly behind. • Some airlines count car seats or strollers as extra baggage.
3
If your child falls asleep easily, try scheduling travel during your child’s nap or sleep times. If you have a finicky sleeper, on the other hand, avoid traveling during usual sleep times as your baby may just stay fussy and awake.
4
Reserve your seats in advance to be sure your entire party sits together. If you have an infant, ask for the bulkhead (front row) and request a bassinet.

Contrary to popular advice, it’s best to avoid the bulkhead with older babies and toddlers because these seats offer neither under-seat space nor seat pockets, so you’ll have to store all your toys and supplies in the overhead compartment. The food trays in the bulkhead also pop up from the armrest, effectively trapping you in your seat when food is served. Don’t put your child in the aisle seat as the food cart and passengers carrying luggage could injure him.
5
If you can afford to, buy a seat for your child and bring along his car seat. The familiarity may make it easier for him to sit still and even sleep. This only works when your child is able to fit comfortably in the tight seat compartments. A toddler with long legs will be scrunched between his seat and the seat in front of him. The added benefit of bringing a car seat
TWO essential Checklists: Airport Ease Get to the airport early. Check as many pieces of luggage as possible to avoid overloading yourself. Remember that your child will have to be taken out of the stroller when you go through security. When you check in, tell the desk attendant you are traveling with a baby. Let her know if you have a stroller or car seat with you. Change your baby’s diaper immediately before boarding the airplane. Avoid breast- or bottle-feeding your baby just before boarding as he may fall asleep and wake up crying as you struggle to carry him and your belongings to the gate. Wait until you are seated and unloaded, then feed him and maybe he’ll take a nap. Saving food and drink for when you’re on the airplane is also a great way to keep older infants entertained. Whenever possible, check your stroller at the gate just prior to boarding so you don’t have to carry your infant through the airport. If traveling with two adults and multiple children, ask if one adult can do early-boarding to set up while the other adult gives your little ones a chance for some last-minute exercise before boarding.
Pack the Perfect Carry-on The right carry-on bag can be a lifesaver. Make sure that your bag is easy to lift or roll, and that it falls within the airline’s size limitations. Here’s what to pack in your carry-on if you have a baby or small child with you: Extra diapers-plan for an unexpected layover or delay. A baby blanket.
106 vivamagonline.com
Baby Travel.indd 106
is the safety feature of having your child in a protective seat on the plane. Make sure your car seat has a sticker that says it’s FAA approved for air travel so that it’s not turned away at the gate.
6
Visit your baby’s pediatrician a week before your trip to be sure he isn’t harboring an ear infection or other illness. If possible, avoid exposing your child to other children the week before the flight so he’s less likely to catch a kid-carried bug. If your baby will be taking any medication on the day of the trip (such as a decongestant or pain reliever), be sure to test it out before the day of travel to gauge any side effects.
7
Dress yourself and your child in comfortable layers of clothing. Airplanes are often cramped and temperatures can fluctuate. VM
A diaper-changing pad Simple mess-free snacks. We love infant puree pouches like the one from Earth’s Best. Not only are they a healthy way to feed your child on the go, but the small spout makes them virtually mess-free. A sippy cup or bottle. Infant pain reliever in case of ear pain or other discomfort. (But Earth’s Best Organic Food Pouches are a great way to don’t try anything new; make sure your child gets make sure it’s somehealthy, mess-free foods on the go. thing your baby has tolerated well before.) Lots of new toys-or old favorites that have been hidden for a few weeks. Avoid noisy toys that will annoy fellow passengers. Extra pacifiers if used. A small medical kit with bandages. Wet wipes for diaper changes and cleaning baby’s hands and face. Empty plastic bags for soiled diapers. A bib and complete change of clothes for baby and an extra shirt for you (spit up and spills happen). Toothbrush and toothpaste for unexpected layovers. If only one parent is traveling (and you are traveling internationally), make sure you bring a letter of permission from the other parent. This should be signed and assert that the parent gives permission for the child to leave the country. Passports If you’re traveling as two adults with two children, divide up the children’s supplies into two separate bags in case your seats are separated on the airplane.

Ginette Couture Age: 54 Occupation: Sales representative for Lindt & Sprüngli Health issue: Menopause Symptoms: When I turned 45, my whole body changed. I gained weight, became anxious and I had problems falling asleep at night. I was totally drained of energy, had memory loss and hot flashes. Health recommendations: I knew I wasn’t ready to start hormone therapy. I wanted to try a natural remedy first. I went to the local health food store and the salesperson recommended Feminex Pre-Meno from Adrien Gagnon, a product dedicated to premenopausal women. The first year, I took three capsules every day. The next year, I took two capsules every day for the first six months, then one capsule every day for the rest of the year. I also started going to the gym and changed my diet – cut back on coffee, tea, alcohol and sugar. The results: Natural remedy, good diet and exercise proved to be a winning combination. I feel healthier today than when I was 45. I eat well, sleep well and feel more energetic.

for a few years and expected that giving up alcohol would solve my health problems. Unfortunately, it only made me more aware of how poorly I’d been treating my body. I had terrible digestive cramping, painful bowel movements and overall exhaustion that made it difficult to get out of bed. I went to see my family doctor who sent me to a special clinic for gastro-intestinal health. They did some tests and said they couldn’t find anything wrong with me but diagnosed me with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and gave me Imodium, which made things much worse. Health recommendations: At the end of my line, I met a Naturopath named Masina Wright who suggested that I might have Candida overgrowth in my digestive system. She recommended doing an anti-yeast diet that involved me taking a break from sugar, vinegar and fermented foods. The results: Within two months of my “Candida diet” my symptoms were clearing up. I firmly believe there are some things that natural medicine is more effective for than tradition techniques. I have been inspired to attend Naturopathy school and become a Naturopathic Doctor myself.

Andie Musina Age: 33 Occupation: Wellness Specialist and Vegan Lifestyle Coach Health issue: Depression and a life-altering accident Symptoms: My life was on a downward spiral. My days were spent recovering from a jumble of anxiety, depression, self-hate and self-induced illnesses. I wanted to spend my time sleeping, as this was the only time I was actually at peace with myself.
I couldn’t cope. Then one day, while hiking with my dogs, the ground eroded from under me causing me to fall about 50 feet. I was caught by a tree that broke my fall – and also broke my back and ribs. While I was grateful that I was not paralyzed, I was far from healthy. I had regular seizures, was condemned to a bed and couldn’t work or socialize. I thought: “I have nothing left to live for.” Health recommendations: I had refused pain medication after the first week because I didn’t want to spend my days as an addict. I decided I wanted to opt for natural healing regardless of how painful the experience was going to be. Doctors told me I would be a hunchback, would need back surgery, and my brain injury would greatly affect my life. I refused to accept my own demise. I started small. I began stretching and exercising (something that was completely foreign to a punk rock kid like me). I stopped drinking and smoking, and started eating healthy raw and vegan foods. Suddenly I realized that the positive energy I was feeding my mind and body was creating positive things in my life; including a new and amazing appreciation for myself. The results: I got my life back! I believe in myself and my life experience so much so that I started my own Wellness Company – a vegan-based lifestyle coaching company called Veeg. My mission is to help others with their personal journey to wellness using natural information and tips. Change is never easy and sometimes we all need a cheerleader to help guide and motivate us.
Véronique Dubé Age: 30 Occupation: Writer and translator Health issue: Post-partum depression Symptoms: After giving birth to my second child I had no energy. I was always tired and I couldn’t concentrate. I was suffering from migraines and premenstrual and menstrual disorders. I was not able to loose my baby weight and felt bad about it. I was overcome with feelings of worthlessness and guilt. Health recommendations: When my baby was eight months I went to see my doctor who was really open to natural remedies. He suggested evening primrose oil to treat my chronic headaches, help with weight control and PMS. I took three capsules per day for six months. I also needed to look at my diet and start a fitness plan. The results: I started to see results after three months. I was less tired and I lost about five pounds. I quickly became addicted to the gym, or should I say to the wellbeing I felt every time I finished a workout. After a year and a half, I went from 148 to 118 pounds. Now, I regularly run 10-kilometers and I feel healthier than I have ever felt before. VM

Or do your flights of haunted fantasies tend toward the bride who was not to be, high heels heard nightly in an atrium, and slamming doors? New Mexico legends live freely within the walls of La Posada Resort & Spa in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico. julia’s home Within six historically rich acres sits the La Posada with its 157 guest rooms and beautifully landscaped grounds and fountains. Then there’s the historic Staab House, a Victorian mansion built by German emigrant, Abraham Staab in 1882 for his beautiful wife Julia who he brought to the New Mexico Territory in 1865. It still stands today as the fashionable mansion it was a century ago. Now it’s the welcoming main structure of the La Posada Resort. Back in its day, the house quickly became a place where artisans gathered, and society galas were held. It all was not all happy times within the walls of the second story home where the family lived though. “We’d probably call it post-partum depression now,” says Marcia Sky, area marketing manager when speaking of Julia’s infamous blue moods. The Staabs had eight children. It was the death of a son, however, who died soon after birth that threw Julia into a deep depres-

YOUR Horoscope By Chrissie Blaze
Scorpio (Oct. 24 – Nov. 21)
This is your time to shine with the Sun in Scorpio until November 21. Saturn in your sign, however, reminds you of responsibilities. A long waiting period is over and opportunities for change appear. Be alert and accept support. It’s an intense time; decisions you make now will impact your future.
Sagittarius
(Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may begin the month questioning a previous financial decision you made but you can learn from it, and begin planning your next big adventure – Sagittarius-style! You’re ready for the holidays and a positive year ahead but don’t neglect details. Be realistic or you may be distracted by wishful thinking.
Capricorn
(Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The month begins intensely with long-term changes that began last year. Mars in the area of adventure and higher truth is now inspiring you to strengthen yourself physically and mentally. You are normally cautious; now is the time to take a risk in love though. Prepare for a romantic and pleasant holiday season.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
The Sun and Saturn join to bring a career challenge that brings out your leadership skills. Your bright intellect steers you through life. Buried feelings pop out around November 14 causing unexpected ripples in relationships. Now is the time to face issues head on and clear the decks for 2014.
Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
In November you find yourself facing decisions for the future. The Scorpio New Moon on November 3 prompts you to reconsider previous choices. You may feel uncertain so spend time in meditation and use your intuition. The month ends blissfully and you now feel ready for a fun holiday season.
Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)
You feel ready to enjoy the holidays. A tense relationship aspect between Uranus and Pluto may thwart your plans though. You’re independent and don’t enjoy others imposing their will. Reflect on what you really want; you may need to make a change. Don’t act until Mercury goes direct on November 10.
Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)
Put holiday plans on pause until November 10 and then get to work. The Full Moon in Taurus on November 17 brings a new commitment in relationships. November continues with

support from the cosmos that boosts your confidence and inspires you to positive action to improve your life in 2014.
Gemini (May 21-June 21)
November is great for streamlining your life and improving your health. You could experience challenges at work but use your communication skills and you will win. You may be called on to smooth over family disputes around November 25 when Mercury joins Saturn, bringing a serious note to holiday plans.
Cancer (June 22-July 22)
Romance and enjoyment is in the air. Be careful what you promise before November 10 when Mercury is retrograde. The Taurus Full Moon on November 11 signals a great time for networking and friendships. Be prepared to accept holiday invitations that you might normally reject; a positive surprise awaits you.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
You can now close the door on a difficult chapter of your life, although some issues from the past may emerge from November 1 to 10. Your spirits lift on November 12 when your ruler, the Sun, joins with Jupiter, brings you healing, and a glimpse of an uplifting holiday season.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
November begins with Mercury retrograde and a stressful aspect between Uranus and Pluto: you may finally have to accept that what you want is not realistic. Seek new opportunities around November 17 when the Taurus Full Moon brings possibilities for further education. Jump into the holiday spirit on November 27.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
An astute Scorpio New Moon Eclipse on November 3 encourages you to take positive action with finances so you’re in good shape for the holidays. Relationships could be intense around mid-month and honesty is your best approach. You end the month in high spirits, filled with fresh ideas and new plans for 2014.
