My gift to you It’s hard to lead a balanced life. You strive to be the best, both at work and at home. Your days are so packed you sometimes wonder how you do it. On top of that you try to lead a healthy life. Even though you might not be able to exercise as much as you’d like to, you still do your share, try to eat healthy as much as possible, take supplements and visit your doctor. Life can be so challenging you sometimes forget its little luxuries, guilty pleasures that can simply transport and inspire you. I decided it was time to help you with that. That’s why I called some of the top talent in our fashion and jewellery industry to create a story (page 84) unlike any you’ve seen in our pages before. I hope these sensual, powerful images put a smile in your day and make you dream of beautiful things. It’s my gift to you, our loyal reader.

ou reach to hug a friend, dance with your arms in the air, or even simply stretch and then, instant mortification. Body odour is a fact of life, yet it’s not one we are comfortable talking about. When soap and water aren’t cutting it and BO is continuing to pop up at the most inopportune times, it’s time to try something new. So we’re putting it all on the table and sharing our natural underarm beauty secrets. INTO THE PIT

The armpit’s job is to help regulate your body’s heat; it sweats to reduce the body’s temperature in times of stress, physical or emotional. However, sweat has no smell – it’s the bacteria that grow in the presence of sweat that cause body odour. CHOOSING YOUR PROTECTION

Antiperspirants are designed to stop perspiration, or block the body’s sweating mechanisms. This is usually done with the help of an aluminum-based compound. Since lymph nodes and breast tissue are found close to the armpit, some people have concerns about the safety of antiperspirants. However, The Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that the use of aluminum-based antiperspirants was not a risk factor for breast cancer (hormones appear to play the largest role in determining risk). However, if you want to play it safe, there are many natural underarm options. Deodorants use odour- and bacteria-inhibiting ingredients to help keep your underarms smelling fresh. CONVENTIONAL DEODORANTS MAY CONTAIN: a} fragrance b} antibacterial agents (triclosan) c} substances that change the skin’s pH (triethyl citrate) or d} an offending-smell binder (zinc ricinoleate) NATURAL DEODORANTS MAY CONTAIN: a} mineral salts b} hops c} lemon oil or d} cedar and other plant extracts that offer fragrance and antibacterial help Natural deodorants often come in conventional forms, including nonaerosol sprays and roll-ons. Some even offer natural ingredients, such as tea tree oil, providing delicate underarm skin with extra care.

‘AU NATUREL’ TIPS:

1. W ear loose-fitting clothing to allow your underarms to stay cool. 2. Use stress-relieving strategies, such as meditation and deep breathing, to help prevent excess sweating. 3. Eat organic, natural, whole foods to reduce your body’s need to excrete toxins in the form of sweat.

e all want a beautiful smile and a healthy mouth is an important aspect of our overall well-being. You use your mouth to eat, talk and breathe – all key elements to living a long and healthy life – so it is important to know whether the products are doing what they should be doing and if what they contain is beneficial to your health. Though many products promise the moon, their lists of ingredients often read like the owner’s manual of a spacecraft. Choosing natural oral health care products is an easy way to take care of our lips, teeth and tongue, without chemical side effects.

The foundation of good oral health is simple, according to naturopathic doctor Corinne Brown of Brownroots Wellness in Beamsville, Ont. “First and foremost, avoid sugary and acidic foods, which weaken the enamel of the tooth, leading to increased risk of cavities,” she says. Toothpastes containing baking soda are a great pick, as they also work as natural whiteners to break down stains and achieve a beautiful, white smile. “Propolis [derived from beeswax] is a great remedy for dry lips,” she adds. “It is a natural product with no chemicals or toxic compounds added, has amazing healing qualities, and feels very soothing to the lips. Most commonly, chapped lips signify dehydration, so drink a tall glass of water before applying your propolis!” Brown cautions that persistent symptoms such as bad breath, chapped lips or tooth decay could be warning signs of significant health issues. She recommends checking with your doctor if symptoms persist.

NATURAL PRODUCTS TO KEEP YOU SMILING • Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Toothpaste contains 100 per cent pure tea tree oil, a natural antibacterial agent, keeping the mouth fresh for longer. It also assists in reducing tooth decay, with regular brushing. (110 g, $7.99). • Dr. Ken’s Maximum Care Whitening Toothpaste naturally whitens and brightens your smile using papaya plant. Its green tea extract fights bacteria, cavities, gum disease, plaque, cell damage and bad breath. (170 g, $7.49)

beauty tips

the natural guide to teenage skin With expert tips from our pros, you’ll learn how to help your teen get the perfect complexion — and set up good skincare habits for life by lena grady

1

Wash Your Face

Is your teen suffering from breakouts? He or she is not alone. Eighty-five per cent of teens suffer from acne, an inflammatory skin condition that can pop up on the face, neck, shoulders or upper back, says naturopath Dr. Meghan Haggarty of the Nardella Clinic in Calgary. Washing the face morning and night with a gentle cleanser free of irritating sodium lauryl sulfate is the first step to keeping skin fresh and pimple free.

2

Clean Diet

That favourite chocolate bar doesn’t necessarily cause acne. Yet eating a clean diet and avoiding inflammatory foods, in combination with good hygiene, can help reduce this condition. Limiting artificial sugars, citrus fruits, wheat, dairy, caffeine, juice and peanuts, along with fried and processed foods, will help the body find a balance.

3

Eat More Veggies

While you can no longer force your teens to eat vegetables, they can and should nosh on veggies for the good of their skin. Chow down on lots of green leafy produce, lean protein choices, such as fish and chicken, antioxidant-rich fruits, such as blueberries and omega-3 oils. Use anti-inflammatory spices such as cinnamon, basil and ginger to flavour foods.

4

Take Vitamins

We’ve heard it before — take vitamins! Vitamin A helps repair skin tissue and prevent dry flaky skin, vitamin B6 will help balance hormones and fish oils can decrease inflammation. Don’t forget about the benefits of maintaining a healthy level of flora in the stomach — probiotics can help balance the gut and promote a healthy digestive system, which can improve the skin’s appearance, says Haggarty. Extracts from dandelion root and burdock are also key in helping to support the liver and aid in detoxification, she says.

5

Moisturize

Remember to moisturize! Drying out the skin with abrasive cleansers won’t help acne or skin conditions — in fact, it may make it worse. Skin that’s stripped of moisture will overproduce oil, and this can lead to more breakouts. Stick with moisturizers labelled “non-acnegenic” or “non-comedogenic.”

6

Exfoliate

Exfoliate — just be careful not to damage the skin. Steer clear of abrasive products with sharp fruit grains and look for ones with gentle particles, such as rice, or use a hemp facecloth. Exfoliating sloughs off the layer of dead skin that can clog pores — just try not to overdo it.

7

Avoid Tanning

Does your teen think a tan is sexy? Think again. The sun’s rays cause damage to skin in the form of a burn and also break down collagen and produce melanin, causing wrinkles and sun spots. Because most of sun damage happens before the age of 20, teens should slather on natural physical sunscreens such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to protect skin from damage.

8

Check Labels

Check the labels on all face products: anything oil-, wax- or paraffin-based may clog pores, says Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, owner and medical director of Bay Dermatology Centre, in Toronto.

9

Try Tea Tree

Dab tea tree oil on problem areas. This essential oil is different from pore-clogging mineral oils and helps naturally kill the bacteria that can contribute to acne, says Haggarty. Make sure to wash the face after sweating and always remove makeup at night. Most importantly, though it might seem tempting, avoid squeezing pimples or picking at the face. This can lead to long-term scarring and can actually push bacteria deeper into pores.

laura nistor, mid 30s inside sales customer marketing manager for canada, barbara’s bakery colborne, ontario Laura Nistor hails from Romania, is a mother of two and admits to being a thrillseeker at heart. As a mom, it’s easy to forget how it feels to be a woman, so Laura was looking forward to a new look and fresh start, as part of a new process she’s embarking on to evolve as a person. To enhance her skin tone, we went with a cooler, darker brown colour tone and strategically placed lighter golden tone-ontone highlights to bring attention to her eyes: this created a more sophisticated, harmonious look, with a touch of glamour. For the hair shaping, Laura has soft features, so we created a look that was more angular, while still maintaining the appearance of length. We gave her an asymmetrical cut at a 45-degree angle, emphasizing her cheekbones for a more upscale, sexy look. –pierre lalande

To make her skin look slightly tan and dewy, we mixed light foundation with a little bit of moisturizer and applied it with a foundation brush, using circle strokes. Darker lipstick and stronger, more defined eyes make her look more sophisticated and ready for a cocktail evening. –evgeny loukianenkov

This September she takes her youngest child back to university for her final year of school, leaving Gail with an empty nest and lots more time on her hands for watercolour painting, studying historic architecture and maintaining her healthy lifestyle - with the help of jazz dancing, hot yoga and Pilates. Gail has warm tones in her eyes and skin, so we chose to play this up and work with a dark, golden coppery brown colour to bring out and match the warmth in Gail’s facial features. As she’s petite, we cut her hair with sharp pixie-like details for a more youthful and fun appearance to match her personality. –pierre lalande

s time faithfully ticks onward, we all try desperately to stop, prevent, treat, fi x, prolong, avoid - anything in hopes of sipping a little more from that elusive fountain of youth. Over time, skin tends to lose its elasticity, due to lower production of collagen, Q-10 and natural oils, causing sagging in certain areas. The dryness of mature skin emphasizes the appearance of lines, while the slowed generation of new skin cells creates a rougher skin texture. Sun damage, genetics, poor diet and other factors contribute to uneven skin tone and discolouration. Healthy, youthful skin tends to be supple, smooth, even and luminous. Here are some practical things we can do to prolong that youthful glow:

• SLEEP WELL. Nothing makes you feel and look so healthy as a good night’s rest. Try to catch at least six to seven hours of sleep a night. Sneak in a siesta, if needed. • EAT WELL. It’s not rocket science! What we ingest directly affects how we look, including weight, hair, nails and skin. • GO NATURAL. Eat as much unprocessed, organic, whole food as you can – it really does a body good. Many natural ingredients are also good topically (rosewater for toner, or extra virgin olive oil for skin moisturizer). • PROTECT YOURSELF. Maintaining good skin is a battle, so be prepared. Follow a skincare regimen that suits your skin type. Avoid overexposure to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. • GET HELP. Vitamins and minerals can benefit everyone. Take a complete multi-vitamin daily, and consult an expert to see how you can customize a healthy support system. We have all heard the hype surrounding organic and natural products – yet do these really work? Research says yes! So take the time to read labels (remember that the ingredients on product labels are listed in order of quantity, from greatest amount to smallest).

My teenage daughter uses bleaching cream to hide dark hair on her face. Is this safe? Can you recommend natural alternatives to bleaching and hair removal? While bleaching cream is considered safe, I would recommend that your daughter try another type of hair removal that would potentially not be absorbed by the skin if she intends to bleach on a regular basis. There are many temporary methods such as waxing and threading, as well as more permanent methods such as electrolysis and laser hair removal. Waxing and threading is effective for eyebrows, yet on facial hair it can lead to an ongoing commitment that she may find bothersome in the future. C

MY

Electrolysis is the only form of permanent hair removal and is best suited for the face and smaller areas. Laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction and is excellent for thicker hair and larger areas. I would recommend you seek out a qualified electrologist and laser technician to see which method would best suit her needs and comfort level.

My hair has become noticeably thinner in the last few years. Is there anything I can do to restore fullness or add volume? There can be many causes for thinning hair, from hormones to vitamin deficiencies. It is best to eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in refined and processed foods. Ensure that you are supplying your body with antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and especially E, as it is known to promote healthy hair growth. Fish oil and silica supplements are excellent for hair, nails and skin. Certain hair products can contribute to thinning hair. Try using products that contain gentle ingredients such as rosemary, chamomile and gentle cleansers. Oiling your hair a couple of times per week can help to thicken the hair and add shine. Use a small amount of almond, olive or coconut oil and massage into your scalp. Cover and leave on for a few hours, and then wash with a gentle organic shampoo. Regular exercise will also ensure that the hair follicles are receiving blood flow as well as releasing stress, as there is a correlation between stress and hair loss. understanding IBS W Coping with Irritable Bowel Syndrome dr. joyce johnson nd

e all experience digestive troubles from time to time – so how do you know if it’s irritable bowel syndrome? IBS complicates the life of more than 16 per cent of the population, mostly women. For some, it is a mild annoyance; for others, it may sabotage their ability to work, travel and enjoy normal social activities. Rare in young children, the onset age is usually adolescence or early adulthood; however, older adults are not immune.

Unlike irritable bowel disease, IBS is a disorder marked by a collection of specific symptoms related to the functioning of the large colon. Cramping, abdominal pain and bloating, are telltale symptoms. For the IBS sufferer, these conditions usually disappear following a bowel movement. Abnormal bowel movements that may alternate between diarrhea and constipation, or primarily one or the other, are also key indicators. Other indicators include loss of appetite, whitish mucous in the stool, the feeling that you have not completed a bowel movement and a worsening of symptoms during menstrual periods. While there are no specific tests for IBS, your doctor may want to do a complete medical examination and blood tests to rule out other possible sources. A GI series and/or colonoscopy may also be scheduled. The causes of irritable bowel syndrome may be multifactorial. It would appear that the muscles in the large intestine, known as the colon, are extra sensitive to stretching, moving or nerve stimulation from the brain. Stress also appears to be a trigger of an eruption of symptoms. The nerve endings in the colon may overreact to brain warning signals, causing painful contractions and cramping.

Treatment for IBS includes three components: lifestyle and diet changes, natural health products and stress relief: • Lifestyle adjustments may include adding regular exercise improving your sleep habits to reduce anxiety levels. Eliminate caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, dairy products, chocolate, artificial sweeteners and grains. A natural diet of whole foods, fibre-rich fruits and vegetables is recommended. Learning to eat slowly is beneficial. • Natural remedies: • Probiotics: 1-10 billion CFU per day • Fibre: 3-5 grams daily at bedtime • Peppermint oil: take capsules as directed between meals daily • Stress relief through counselling may provide useful tools for reducing anxiety and depression. Meditation and hypnosis as well as life coaching can also alleviate some of the stress. Proper treatment can limit the symptoms of IBS and improve your overall quality of life. As with any medical concern, talk to your healthcare practitioner before you try to address this condition yourself.

t’s almost that time of year again – sniffle season. We all try so hard to keep ourselves healthy, yet colds and the flu seem to sneak up on us year after year. We all want to get our immune systems in fighting form this season, and prevention is the best form of medicine. The body has an amazing array of immune cells to protect us from getting sick, so with the right support, it’s easy to stay healthy all year long. First-line treatments are diet and lifestyle – given the right nutrients, our bodies have no problem identifying, isolating and removing bacteria and viruses, allowing us to stay healthy and active throughout the fall and winter. Many of us may not realize that 60 to 80 per cent of our immune system is actually in the lining of our gastrointestinal tract, so a healthy gut is the first place to start in supporting a healthy immune system. With our cold Canadian climate, warm foods such as unrefined fats, lightly cooked vegetables and plenty of protein in the winter should be at the forefront of any good immune-support strategy. Try making soups and stews using natural sea salt, to taste, and fats such as olive and coconut oils, which work as natural antibacterial and antiviral agents in our bodies. Emotional and physical stress also play a major role in our immune systems. Keeping a balanced lifestyle and managing stress properly by reducing the consumption of excess sugar and refined grain products, while enjoying regular exercise and getting plenty of good quality sleep, are all important in cold and flu prevention. Stress reduction techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, yoga and meditation can help boost immunity by balancing stress hormones and increasing immune cell circulation, while improving digestion.

60 to 80 per cent of our immune system is actually in the lining of our gastrointestinal tract

As viral and bacterial exposures typically come from surfaces and person-to-person contact, prevention should also start with good hygiene. Proper, regular hand washing with soap and water keeps us healthy all year. For those who get sick easily, nasal irrigation with a solution of sea salt and baking soda is also a very important strategy for staying healthy. Nasal irrigation kits, available in most pharmacies, keep the nasal passages clear of viruses and bacteria when used several times per day. All colds and flu are caused by different viruses that can develop into secondary bacterial infections when we don’t listen to our bodies and rest. Common cold symptoms, such as runny nose, sore throat, cough and mild fevers, or flu symptoms, such as chills, fevers, muscle aches and significant weakness, are all signs of the immune system trying to clear up the infection. When possible, let it run its course, providing the body with immune support and natural treatments if needed.

feeling the burn

Heartburn affects millions of Canadians, yet it can easily be managed with lifestyle and dietary changes

haun was 19 years old when he first started to experience symptoms of heartburn. “I was living away from home for the first time and it wasn’t easy to eat healthy anymore,” he says. “I was eating late at night, drinking more alcohol and eating tons of fast food,” he says. For many years, he relied on medication to help alleviate the pain. But it wasn’t until almost 10 years later, when Shaun finally made some significant changes to his diet and lifestyle, that the symptoms of heartburn really went away.

THE BURNING FACTS Shaun was one of the five million Canadians who suffer from heartburn and/or acid regurgitation at least once a week, according to the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation. Gastroesophageal reflux (more commonly known as heartburn) causes an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, burning sensation in the chest or throat, most commonly after meals or when lying down.

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a small band of muscle that wraps around the bottom of the esophagus, the tube that food travels down after swallowing. Normally, the sphincter acts as a valve that opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and stomach acid from rising back up into the esophagus. If the sphincter is not functioning properly, stomach acid may flow back into the esophagus, causing symptoms of heartburn such as pain and coughing. HEARTBURN RELIEF Contrary to popular belief, you don’t necessarily have to rely on antacids to treat heartburn over the long term. While these remedies reduce stomach acid production, this is counter-productive to the absorption of key nutrients such as calcium, iron and vitamin B12. Many dietary and lifestyle changes can work just as effectively to reduce painful symptoms of heartburn: • Stop smoking • Avoid overeating, especially at bedtime. Having too much food in the stomach increases the risk of reflux. Try smaller, more frequent meals instead • When lying down, elevate your head • Maintain a healthy weight, as excess abdominal weight is a risk factor for reflux • Choose clothing that is loose-fitting around the waist • Learn to manage your stress NATURAL HELPERS A number of natural health products can also help reduce heartburn by improving digestion or easing an irritated or inflamed esophagus: Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is an herbal remedy that can help soothe and heal tissues in the digestive tract by providing a protective barrier against the damaging effects of gastric acid. Dosage: Chew two 380 milligram DGL wafers three to six times daily. Slippery elm (Ulmus fulva) is rich in mucilage, a gelatinous substance that can coat and soothe irritated or inflamed mucous membranes in the stomach and throat. Dosage: In capsule form, take 800-1,000 milligrams three times daily. Digestive Enzymes help the body to more effectively break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins in food to reduce uncomfortable symptoms of heartburn. Dosage: Take one to two broad-spectrum digestive enzymes with all meals that are difficult to digest.

Why having good health is her most valuable asset by bonnie siegler

A

decade ago, 42 year-old actress Tisha Campbell-Martin was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, a disease that can affect multiple organs in the body, mostly occurring in the lungs. She also had gained 65 pounds from her first pregnancy with her son, Xen. With her sarcoidosis in remission, the actress, best known for her roles in My Wife and Kids, Martin and Everybody Hates Chris and now starring in the Lifetime TV drama series, The Protector, then became pregnant with her second son, Ezekiel, and gained 90 pounds, with the sarcoidosis returning. Now Campbell-Martin is on a quest for good health that began two years ago. “When I gained weight with the second baby, I was up to 210 pounds and now I’m almost near my goal,” says the now 158-pound talent who is looking to shed another 18 pounds. “But I’m losing it the right way.”

celeb health Actually, she has been on a health quest since she was 18. “I saw how people in my family were getting sick from being overweight,” she says. “So I started taking care of my body then. Unfortunately, certain circumstances happened and I was diagnosed with a genetic lung disorder, but once I got it, I had the quest of keeping healthy and not letting it get me down. She first began walking, then jogging and “the healthier I got, the more in control of the disorder I became,” she says. “And I keep reminding myself everyday that I want to be here for my husband [actor Duane Martin] and kids.” Campbell-Martin approaches her healthy lifestyle without looking at the obstacles that have been thrown in her path. “I can accept the fact that something might be going on with me, because I’m not in denial, but I always think I will beat it.” With diabetes and coronary disease in the family, Tisha has a doctor monitor her regularly, and she supplements her healthy eating plan with vitamins. “They’re just regular over-the-counter vitamins,” she says. She takes Vitamins E, C, B, B1, calcium, magnesium/zinc,

multi, fish oil and B complex. “And I watch my sugar and carb intake. Sugar is like a drug; once you get off the wagon, it’s hard to get back on it.” Snacks include low-fat yogurt topped with berries, a protein bar, carrots or some fresh fruit. “I was asked to be the spokesperson for Yoplait yogurt and they incorporated how I eat it into their campaign. I even keep some in the freezer and then it’ll thaw in my bag so I can have it later as a snack.” Daily exercise includes a 30-minute morning treadmill workout and 150 sit-ups with afternoon light-weight training and another 150 sit-ups. “I’m always doing sit-ups. I’ll even do some in the evening, watching TV or the baby next to me.” Motivated to get in the best shape ever, the busy mom of two is in it for the long haul. “You need to take into account the mind, body and spirit for overall well-being,” she says. “So when I went on my quest to live a healthier lifestyle, I had to recognize that I needed to make time for myself, let all negativity go and fill myself up spiritually, fill myself up physically and realize the mind will follow.”

what is torch disease? Knowing the facts could save your baby’s life by nicole visschedyk

T

he human body has a built-in shield that protects the vulnerable developing foetus. In most cases, even when mom falls ill, the baby is fine. Yet certain diseases specifically target the foetus, and the mother may not show symptoms of a serious infection. Normally, the placenta not only supplies the growing baby with nutrients and oxygen, it also acts as a filter that keeps the baby safe from any viruses or bacteria that may have infected mom. However, there are several exceptions. Certain diseases easily bypass the mother’s defences and cross the placental barrier to infect the foetus, with devastating consequences. Doctors refer to these particularly deadly infections as TORCH diseases. The name is

a medical acronym for a list of diseases, any of which can target the baby during critical growth stages and cause brain damage, deformations and miscarriage. These diseases include malaria, Lyme disease, chicken pox, rubella and herpes. The good news is that most of these diseases are not easily picked up or transmitted. Dr. John Kingdom, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Chair at Mount Sinai Hospital, says women looking to get pregnant can avoid infecting their baby by taking a few precautions. First, they should not travel to malaria-infected areas when they’re pregnant or are looking to get pregnant. Malaria, which is caused by a bloodinfecting parasite, is a seasonal disease.

The Public Health Agency of Canada keeps track of high-risk areas and lists up-to-date information on their website. Children are vaccinated against rubella, which is also called German measles. It causes serious problems with heart, lung and brain development in the baby and can result in a miscarriage. Women should make sure their vaccinations are up-to-date before they get pregnant, Dr. Kingdom says. Persistent diseases such as herpes, hepatitis or HIV can also target the baby. The good news is that precautionary measures can be taken. Women should get tested, before they get pregnant, for any STD or other diseases that could infect the baby, says Dr. Kingdom.

The dangerous-sounding cytomegalovirus often infects daycare centres. Women with toddlers in childcare should be extra careful to avoid contracting the virus, which only causes mild illness in young children or adults yet can be serious for the foetus. Regular hand washing is vital. Leslie Solomonian, a professor at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, says there are some simple ways women looking to get pregnant can keep their immune system in fighting form. “It’s important women get lots of rest, lots of fluids and manage their stress,” she said. Women often try to do too much, even when pregnant, and taking the time to breathe and relax is key, Solomonian adds. Certain naturopathic practises are not a good idea for women trying to conceive, she says. “In general, detoxification shouldn’t be encouraged during pregnancy,” Solomonian says. “In the first three months, the baby is especially vulnerable because its nervous system and organs are developing.”

What does TORCH stand for T. Toxoplasmosis: the disease is caused by exposure to raw meat or cat feces and results in mild flu-like symptoms in adults. Most adults have immunity to the disease. O. Other infections including malaria, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis can infect the baby. R. Rubella or German measles cause mild flu-like symptoms and a three-day rash. Most adults are vaccinated against the disease in childhood as part of the MMR shot. C Cytomegalovirus is a herpes class of virus and causes very mild symptoms. Most adults have immunity to the illness because they have been exposed as children. Hand washing can present the disease. H. Herpes simplex virus causes blisters to the mouth or genitals, depending on whether it is type I or type II.

FACT BOX

A prescribed probiotic can help keep the bacteria in the gut and vaginal canal healthy in preparation for birth, she explains. Solomonian cautions that some herbs can be toxic to the foetus, so it’s important that women review all herbal and pharmaceutical prescriptions with their doctor and naturopath before they try to conceive. a) Protect your baby from disease during pregnancy b) Get lots of rest to keep your immune system in fighting form c) Avoid travel to countries where you could be exposed to malaria d) Make sure your shots are up to date e) Wash your hands often f) Get screened for sexually transmitted diseases or other infections that could harm the baby before you get pregnant. If doctors know ahead of time, they can often prevent the disease from spreading to the baby FR ESH STARTS 2011 VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

e all know what the uterus is, yet do you know how to keep it healthy? Located inside a woman’s pelvis, it is a hollow pear-shaped organ where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. Uterine conditions can range from prolapse to excessive bleeding, and may be caused by a variety of conditions. The first sign that you may have a uterine disease is bleeding between periods or after intercourse. This abnormal bleeding may be caused by hormones, thyroid conditions, fibroids, endometriosis, polyps, cancer, infection or pregnancy. ENDOMETRIOSIS This occurs when there is abnormal growth of endometrial cells outside of the uterus. The cells usually grow in the pelvic region; however, if the condition worsens, they can grow all over your internal organs, such as the bladder, and can grow as far up as the lungs. During menses, these cells bleed, which can lead to serious problems, such as internal bleeding. This condition may also cause infertility. FIBROIDS These are fibrous tissue that grows in the muscle wall of the uterus. They can range in size from that of a pea to that of a grapefruit. The large ones may cause pain and irregular bleeding during menses. PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an

infection of a woman’s pelvic organs, including the uterus. PID can cause infertility and is associated with a number of different infectious organisms, such as N. gonorrhoea, and C. trachomatis that enter the uterus and spread. PROLAPSED UTERUS This occurs when the uterus sags down into the vagina. Symptoms may include vaginal discharge, difficult urination, incontinence and a feeling that something is coming out of the vagina. Prolapse occurs when the muscles that support the uterus become weak. This damage usually occurs in childbirth, however, it may also be caused by heavy lifting, strenuous physical activity or aging. UTERINE CANCER This is also known as endometrial cancer. It begins in the lining of the uterus, called

the endometrium. These endometrial cells are stimulated by estrogen, and undergo a precancerous cell division called hyperplasia. This may be in response to chronic exposure to excessive estrogen. UTERINE POLYPS These are attached to the inner wall of the uterus. An overgrowth of cells in the lining of the uterus leads to uterine polyps. The sizes range from that of a sesame seed to that of a golf ball, or larger. Occasionally, the polyps may slip down through the opening of the uterus into the vagina. Protect your health! Being proactive with regards to uterine health involves getting regular check-ups and maintaining a normal body weight – being overweight can result in unpredictable hormone production. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fibre, while low in animal meats and dairy, is recommended. Avoiding caffeine, alcohol and smoking. Consider adding to your diet foods high in phytoestrogens or supplementing with phytoestrogens to balance your hormones.

coping with chronic fatigue syndrome Learn natural ways to prevent, cope and treat CFS by lena grady

Despite sleeping 16 hours a day, Stacey couldn’t muster the energy to take her garbage to the curb. A once active 30-yearold, her energy levels had dropped so low that she couldn’t do basic daily activities. She knew this was more than something a good night’s sleep or antidepressants could fix. Finally, Stacey found a naturopath who diagnosed her with chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS. WARNING SIGNS

It can have a sudden onset, explains Simon Lo of the Toronto Naturopathic Clinic. Usually a period of severe stress precedes the condition, or an infection. Warning signs can range from flulike symptoms, such as low energy, muscle pain, poor sleep patterns, swollen lymph nodes and headaches, to digestive issues, such as cramps, diarrhea and bloating. Brain fog, in terms of both concentration and memory, can make you feel disoriented. Increased sensitivity to chemicals can

also be an indicator that something’s not right. The symptoms have an effect psychologically and emotionally, and the most common misdiagnosis is depression. “I have had patients who cannot go to work, or school, and these are patients who sleep upwards of 12 to 14 hours a day,” says Lo. It affects more women than men, with the most common age group being from 40 to 55, though it can occur even in teenagers. CHRONIC FATIGUE VS. CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Not all fatigue is the same — there’s a difference between chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome. CF is a feeling of tiredness that has persisted for a long time — months or even years. It’s often a symptom of underlying conditions such as candidiasis, lupus, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, or an allergy. CFS, in comparison, is continual tiredness that no amount of sleep can fi x — one that’s not caused by other medical conditions. Basically, CF is a symptom of other ailments, while CFS has no known cause. If you suspect you have one of these conditions, make sure to explain exactly the way you’re feeling to your doctor or naturopath.

health WHAT’S THE CAUSE?

The most common cause behind this long-term debilitating feeling of exhaustion is depleted adrenal glands. “These glands are like your bank account,” explains Lo. “You can take $20 out everyday, but if you only put $15 back at the end of the day, after a while, there is nothing left. You have overspent. Now your savings can run very low, but people with CFS basically have bankrupted their account. And just like in real life, it takes a long period of time to recover from bankruptcy.” DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

To diagnose CFS, extensive testing is required for things such as anemia, diabetes, Lyme’s disease and checking food sensitivities and B12 levels.

vitamins, iron, an adrenal extract, ginseng, vitamin C, vitamin D, licorice, eleutherococcus, rhodiola, ashwagandha, astragalus and various homeopathics — you’ll need a naturopath to tell you exact amounts that will work safely for you.

The most common cause behind this long-term debilitating feeling of exhaustion is depleted adrenal glands.

The best treatments, according to Lo, are specific adrenal support using vitamins, herbs, intravenous therapy and a B12 vitamin injection. Dietary changes are also usually necessary after doing a food-sensitivity test. In terms of supplements, Lo suggests multi-

} VIVA

Once the initial adrenal support is in full swing, Lo suggests treating other organ systems affected, such as the thyroid, digestion and immune system.

While acupuncture, chiropractics and exercise are all helpful, patients should be wary. Massages can be painful due to inflamed joints, and exercise can push the body to high levels of exhaustion. Tai Chi, meditation, yoga, walking and deep breathing exercise can all help. Lo recommends starting with light walking and working your way up. Remember, no two people with CFS are alike, so don’t compare your issues with other sufferers.

So

Good!

Barbara’s products are all-natural, good for you and truly do taste awesome by natalie moore

We all know it’s important to eat right. Yet often that’s still challenging to do. Although we’re aware unprocessed foods are better for us, deep down we have to admit that while shopping, we stare skeptically at the options on store shelves wondering whether they’ll be tasty.

Butter cereal and Barbara’s Puffi ns Cinnamon cereal. Plus, “all of our cereals are made with whole grains,” says Burgess. “We use fruit juice, honey and natural ingredients to sweeten or fl avour our products versus sugars or artificial additives.” For added fibre, try Barbara’s Shredded cereals.

Barbara’s understands that sentiment completely. In fact, Barbara’s mission (yes, she’s a real person) when she founded the company in 1971, was to “make wholesome food taste incredibly delicious.” Forty years later, her concept has evolved from a small, fledgling bakery in Northern California to a thriving North American business cooking up a range of cereals and snacks that are allnatural and equally yummy — seriously!

If breakfast on-the-go is more your style, grab Barbara’s Multigrain Cereal Bars. The fruit-fi lled bars are wrapped in whole grains like oats and barley, are low in fat, wheat free and have no added sugars.

Even today with a multitude of health food choices, John Burgess, Barbara’s National Sales Director, recognizes long-held misconceptions that healthy foods are unappetizing still exist. “I think that’s what happens with a lot of natural products and what scares some consumers away from other products that are in the natural arena: they don’t really taste that good,” he admits. “We’re 100 per cent natural, we’re low in fat, taste great and are good for you.” Starting with a nutritious breakfast goes a long way toward maintaining the right eating habits throughout the day. Both kids and adults will love the best-selling Barbara’s Puffi ns Peanut

Follow that up with afternoon snacks like Barbara’s Fig Bars made with real fruit and fibre. Or, choose a wholesome, savory treat with Barbara’s Cheese Puffs combining stone-ground corn and carefully selected cheeses. Even the packaging is all-natural. Last summer the new 100 per cent recycled carbon neutral GreenChoice cartons hit store shelves. The packs feature a bold, simplified design, making it easier for health-conscious shoppers to identify. What would Burgess say is his preferred Barbara’s item? “If I’m asked what my favourite product is,” he ponders, “I’d say it’s Barbara’s Puffi ns Cinnamon cereal.” Barbara’s is a division of Weetabix

What causes warts and are there any natural methods for removal? Warts are caused by a localized viral infection of the skin that occurs when our immune defences are low. Although there are many topical treatments available, warts are typically harmless and will often resolve on their own. Regardless of what topical treatment you consider, successful treatment and prevention of chronic warts should always start with a healthy diet and lifestyle to help strengthen the immune system. Along with healthy food choices, zinc supplements or zinc-rich foods would also be important to incorporate into the diet. The location of the wart will dictate the best treatment course. Aggressive natural treatment for warts in the office starts with removing the surface of the wart and freezing the base of the wart with liquid nitrogen. Topical treatment with tea tree oil, mayapple extract, cedar oil or zinc oxide have all been used successfully to treat warts. To increase treatment success, applying tape or cellophane over your topical treatment of choice will help the treatment penetrate deeper into the affected area. I have chronic dry, flaky skin. I drink lots of water and I have tried countless moisturizers and exfoliants. I even sleep with a humidifier in my room – nothing seems to help. What could be causing this? Successful treatment of chronic skin conditions always starts with treatment of the digestive system. Working with a health professional to make specific dietary changes and support intestinal health by eliminating specific food allergies would be a great place for you to start. Healthy oils in the diet are extremely important for healthy skin. Significantly increasing your intake of fish or fish oils, olive oil and some saturated oils, such as coconut oil, will often improve dry skin. Because the absorption of fat can be difficult, always consume fats with larger meals. Ox bile, digestive enzymes or bitter herbs, such as artichoke or dandelion root, may also help with increasing fat absorption. Although chronic dry skin will often improve with exposure to sunlight and moist climates, these improvements are likely in part due to increased circulation to the skin. Increasing circulation or fluidity of body tissues is what healthy fats in the diet can help accomplish. Applying a combination of coconut oil and vitamin D (approximately 1000 IU per gram of coconut oil) to the skin, along with the appropriate dietary changes, should help you get started. She has also moved with Simon Cowell to his brand new reality show, The X Factor, as judge and mentor to contestants vying for the coveted $5 million prize. At 49, the multi-Grammy and Emmy Award winner seems to be in constant motion, having just returned from seven weeks on the road searching for talent above and beyond the idol level. “I’m like a little dervish,” comments the 157 cm (5’2”) talent. “I have a lot of energy. The energy in music and movement has saved my life. It gets me to that real happy place, makes me feel fearless and connected.” The singer-dancer-choreographerhit maker did not expect to find herself aligning with Cowell on another entertainment reality show. “It’s very, very intense,” she explains about the show debuting mid-September. “The judges aren’t just mentoring; we’re picking out their songs, their wardrobe, and that is totally in my wheelhouse. The former Lakers cheerleader seems to have found the keys for maintaining general wellbeing and balance in her life. Raised in the sprawling San Fernando Valley outside Los Angeles by her Jewish parents (her dad from Syria and mom from Minnedosa, Manitoba), spirituality is something she believes plays a critical role in creating balance. “My dad is born again now, and my mom is still in the Jewish faith, so I’ve been brought up kind of all over the place. It’s all about keeping a healthy mind, acceptance of who I am and where I’m at, and to be gentle on myself because there

is no such thing as perfection. Balance is a real tough thing when you’re a professional – or mom – and balance is what can really save you. I try and strike a balance even if I’m working 18-hour days.” Mini breaks throughout the day help Abdul recharge. “Sometimes I need to just get some energy going and rather than reaching for a sugary treat, I’ll get my iPod and listen to a song, dance in place, just to get my mind working again. Music, dancing and free form is really where I find my happy place. It’s not me trying to achieve a certain step – it’s just spending time with the music.” From Sade and Australia’s The Wintercoats for Pilates to Outkast and David Bowie for strength training and Lil Wayne for dance, Abdul says, “I have different playlists for

different styles of my workout.” She tries to work out five to six days a week, however “when I’m on the road, it’s a challenge. I just started swimming, which is really cool, and I’m always incorporating some dance three times a week.” Having given up on scales, Abdul adheres to a clean, simple way of eating. “Nonfat milk, nonfat plain Greek yogurt, vegetables for salad making at any time,” she begins ticking off what we might find in her fridge: “fruit juice, Pellegrino, olives – I love olives – and batteries.” At the thought of the last item, the little woman lets out a contagious laugh. “I love laughing,” she readily admits. “It’s so good for your heart health. Simon and I play practical jokes on each other all the time and laugh out loud hysterically.”

PAIN AND REFLECTION The diminutive diva who has parlayed her innate choreography and upbeat voice into a million dollar career has proven her staying power in show business by finding the upside in even the most abysmal tabloid situations and welcoming consistent change into her world. “As human beings, we are constantly evolving, and being able to acknowledge and be grateful for that evolution is something very important. We can never be stuck in our ways because things change – opinions, dreams – everything that you aspire to or are inspired by. For me, I have to be adaptable and resilient at any given moment. That’s what gives me some perfect days.” The performer has enjoyed a long string of such days and has watched her career blossom from the early ‘80s into becoming a powerful woman in the entertainment field. “I do consider myself a powerful woman, however, I’m soft; I don’t have tough and rough edges,” she admits. “Yet, I’ve been able to stand up for many decades in this business, be relevant, have a voice, help create trends, spot talent and I hope that talent goes on to huge heights. I feel I’ve been able to transcend generations – hey, I’m on my fifth separate and distinct career and still able to make my mark.” She credits gratitude in her heart and that stick-to-it mentality for empowerment: “I just don’t give up.” ith her physical health blooming and career soaring, there are the admitted stresses of X Factor’s 12-to 14-hour days. That’s where “me time” comes into play. “If you are working hard and putting yourself out there, you have to balance it all with nurturing the rest of your body — mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally,” she says. “Sometimes I grab 10 minute pockets of time – sometimes five. I might meditate or take a quick power nap. On weekends, I’ll take one full day off and visit with family and friends.” Other simple pleasures include going for a drive, getting a facial or massage, hiking or entertaining at her home. Her sensible health program has also helped with her reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, which she revealed five years ago. The disease is an incompletely

understood response of the body to an external stimulus, resulting in pain that is usually non-anatomic and disproportionate to the inciting event or expected healing response. “Knock on wood,” she says and visibly does, “I have not had an outbreak for quite some time. The trouble with RSD is there is never a surefire sign of when it’s going to attack. Most definitely it usually occurs when I’m exhausted or overexerted for too many days at a time or involved in a stressful situation…your immune system says, you know what – it’s time, and the whole

ABDUL ON GOOD VIBRATIONS • Be a cheerleader. “I’ve been a cheerleader pretty much my whole life and in the most ironic way, it’s a metaphor. I root for other people to find their own best self.” • Let it just happen. “Sometimes I’ll get a giggle at the absurdity of what I’m doing, yet it’s an organic process where I use my body language.” • Find your inner peace. “I think spirituality plays a critical and vital role in creating balance. Finding spirituality is where my inner peace lies.” • Have role models. “For me, my older sister is a wonderful role model. And Gene Kelly was my number one role model, professionally. I dedicated the song and video Opposites Attract to him.” body fires up.” Abdul admits the care of the pain tests her patience like nothing else. “It’s about being able to breathe, get with the pain and tempering my own anxiety, even though I’m hurting. Visualizing that I’m helping alleviate and eliminate the pain is the only way to get through it because there is no cure for RSD and no medication really helps.” Through all of her ups and downs, Abdul seems to have emerged a stronger, happier woman whose personal journey has brought her to a beautiful state of mind.

cover story

“I’m having the time of my life and I think happiness is a decision you make,” she explains of her personal odyssey. “I have a tremendous amount to be grateful for. I’m having fun in my life and it’s wonderful to feel this way; I have the ability to have good people around me and when I go to work I know it’s going to be challenging, however, I’m loving it all.” Comfortable in her own skin, beauty seems to come from within, a result of living life to the fullest. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become way more comfortable in my skin. I think that’s the benefit and the gift you can look forward to as you mature. I think I’m in a really good place. I’m comfortable with the fact that I’ve kept myself healthy and fit and I’m working hard. I’m always a student and willing to learn. That’s what keeps me young at heart. I’m proud of my age and what comes with it. I consider myself a full-time student. What it does, in turn, is it allows me and prepares me to be a better teacher. I love working with young women and young girls, teaching them self esteem and about their body.” So what’s the best thing Abdul learned recently? “I take the good with the bad,” she says. “I’ve learned that anything that comes into my life which is uncomfortable or maybe doesn’t give me the best feeling, I’ll take a deep breath, count to 10 and by the time I’ve hit 10, I realize how grateful I am for that situation that I’ve turned into gratitude. It sounds silly, yet it’s very powerful.” With dreams of focusing on philanthropic work in the future and possibly fitting in a greatest hits tour in the next year or so, Abdul realizes every ambition, every dream, won’t be a giant success. “You can’t always get a home run, however, when you start collecting the base hits, they turn into the home runs. If you stay in the game, you inevitably love the fact that you’re sticking to something. Just stick to it and decide what’s important in life.” The selfdescribed “passionate, transparent and communicative” woman adds, “Life is good. I don’t have to make any apologies for being kind or silly…I’m proud of myself and I like me — that’s all that really matters.” FR ESH STARTS 2011 vivamagonline.com

balanced living

The Last Man Standing actress finds balance in laughter by bonnie siegler

I

’m grounded and I’m a happy person,” says Nancy Travis, on a break from her new TV sitcom, Last Man Standing, starring Tim Allen. “I have been fortunate in my career; I’m lucky with the people who work with me and I think I’ve always been a glass-halffull person.” Best remembered as the woman in the midst of the baby triangle in Three Men And A Baby, then teaming up again with Ted Danson in Becker, Travis credits her solid upbringing and sense of humour to her overall health and happiness. Now starring as Allen’s wife in the story of an outdated man’s man in a progressive world, she reflects on what it would be like if the roles were reversed and she was the last woman standing. “I would have her be a woman who is balanced,” says the mom of two sons (ages 13 and 9). “A woman who is satisfied with family and work and has managed to find the balance with both of those things.” Art imitating life? Perhaps. Marking a milestone in September by turning 50, Travis sees this as another reward in life. “My sense of humour is how I look at the world … it’s my perspective on it. It’s an integral part of the way I manage relationships and as I’ve gotten older, I’m more confident with my sense of humour. Also, I let it be more organic – I’m not trying to be funny or prove anything. I just enjoy laughing.” She also enjoys her role as a working mom and says she makes breakfast every morning and dinner most nights. Fresh produce abounds in the fridge, thanks in part to a local-produce program at her son’s school. She also manages to squeeze in an eight-kilometre run four days a week with a neighbourhood friend. When it comes to “me time,” she loves to read. “I have books piled on my nightstand,” she says. “I always say I’m going to stop buying books until I get to the ones I have but I just got a Kindle, so I’m reading there, too.” Currently, Travis is turning the pages on Under the Banner of Heaven and piles of magazines. “I love to read; it’s having those moments to myself that help with balance.” With hectic days juggling motherhood, a marriage and career, Travis acknowledges there are compromises. “I find that you can do everything, you just can’t do everything all at once,” she says. This attitude and outlook have empowered her as a woman. “I’m a cheerful and healthy person who truly believes there are no obstacles. The obstacles you confront are the ones that you create. I’m just a happy, creative and curious woman.”

Children Under 6: Cough & Cold Care Be ready for back to school!

B

ack to school is upon us and brings along an army of little seasonal irritants. Cough, cold, flu and fatigue will tussle with your little one. Here is some useful information to guide you into the new season and help your family adopt healthy habits!

BACK TO SCHOOL PATHOLOGIES

Is your little one ready for the new school year? Is he ready to face longer days and cooler temperature? The sudden changes in daily routine can sometimes affect physical and intellectual vigour leaving children more vulnerable to viruses and illnesses; prime suspect being cough and cold. You can easily help them boost their immune system by reviewing simple healthy practices: make sure they wash their hands regularly, stay hydrated and keep a balanced diet. IDENTIFYING EARLY SYMPTOMS OF COUGH AND COLD

Cold symptoms generally includes: runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing and can be accompanied by mild headache and/or light fever. These viral cold infections do not require antibiotics unless complications arise or in the presence of chronic illness (such as asthma).

Two types of cough can be identified: the dry cough and the productive cough. • The dry cough is characterized by an irritation or an infl ammation at the back of the throat, the trachea or bronchus. As per the name, the cough is dry and does not produce any mucus. • The productive cough is a result of a defence mechanism to discharge mucus from the respiratory tract. HEALTH CANADA’S NEW STANDARD TO HELP YOU CHOOSE BETTER

JEWELS: STATEMENT MAKING photography by brendan smyth | assistant photography by jessica lappin-fortin | styling by kelechi achonu hair by donna dolphy | makeup by evgeny loukianenkov

Jewels are the ultimate power statement, making it impossible not to get noticed; power dressing in all its subtlety, refinery and splendour. They can also be used as collateral when the going gets tough. Precious stones are virtually indestructible, easily and legally carried across borders and rarely drop in value. In fashion, the chunkier the better when worn.

The Magic of Mushrooms

People used to believe that mushrooms were magical – they even grew in the dark! Now categorized as fungi, mushrooms may not be magical in the sense that we used to think they were, however, they are celebrated as a source of powerful nutrients. Low in calories and sodium, fat-free and cholesterol-free, mushrooms provide us with selenium, potassium, ribofl avin, niacin, vitamin D and more!

Cut up rabbit into front and hind legs and saddle. Marinate in the white wine, carrots, leeks, onion, garlic, peppercorns, juniper berries, bay leaf, thyme, and rosemary for 24 hours. Remove the rabbit pieces from the marinade. Pour the marinade through a chinois (sieve) and set aside. Place the vegetables and spices remaining in the chinois in cheesecloth and tie with butcher’s sting to form a small bag Season the rabbit with salt and pepper. Heat the canola oil in a skillet and sauté until golden brown. Remove the rabbit to a braising pan. In the same skillet, sauté the chopped tomatoes for a few minutes until soft, being careful not to burn them. Deglaze the pan with the marinating liquid. Add the dark chicken stock, bring to a simmer, and pour the liquid over the rabbit pieces, making sure they’re covered. Add the spice and vegetable bag to the braising pan, cover with a lid, and place in the preheated oven. Braise

until the meat begins to pull away from the bone, 1½ to 2 hours. Remove the pan from oven and set aside until the rabbit is cool enough to handle. Pull the meat from the bones and set aside. Strain the braising liquid and skim off any fat. Return the liquid to the pan and reduce by half. Heat the grapeseed oil in a large cast-iron pan. Sauté the mushrooms with the shallots; season with salt and pepper. Add the mushrooms and shallots, smoked pork belly, and rabbit meat to the braising liquid, bringing to a simmer. Whisk in the butter and slowly simmer for a few minutes until the sauce begins to thicken slightly. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pappardelle until al dente; drain and toss with the olive oil. Add the pappardelle to the braised rabbit; season with salt and pepper. Just before serving, sprinkle with chopped chervil. Divide the pasta among 4 warm pasta bowls and garnish each with a sprig of chervil.

Casserole 4 tbsp (60 mL) butter 1 tbsp (15 mL) sugar 3 oz (90 g) pearl onions, peeled 2 cups (500 mL) water 3 oz (90 g) hedgehog mushrooms 7 oz (200 g) sweetbreads 3 oz (90 g) bacon Pinot Noir Reduction 1 shallot, diced 3 tbsp (45 mL) Pinot Noir ½ cup (125 mL) veal jus 1 tbsp (15 mL) cold butter, cubed 16 grapes, skinned Set a pan over medium heat and add 2 tbsp (30 mL) of the butter and sugar. Stir in the onions and sauté for 2 minutes until some colour starts to show. Pour in the water, stirring gently. Cover the pan with a parchment paper circle with a hole cut out of the middle. Cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes over low heat, adding more water if necessary to prevent the pan from burning. In another pan, heat 1 tbsp (15 mL) of the butter over medium-high heat. Sauté the mushrooms until golden and tender, about 7 to 10 minutes. In the third pan, sauté the sweetbreads with the remaining tablespoon of butter for about 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the onions and mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes. Add the bacon and sauté until crisp. For the Pinot Noir reduction, heat a touch of butter in a saucepan over high heat. Sauté the shallots for 2 minutes, and deglaze with the wine. Add the jus. Turn the heat down to medium and continue to cook for another minute. Whisk in the cold butter. Add the skinned grapes. Spoon the sweetbread, onion, mushroom, and bacon mixture into a small dish. Top with the Pinot Noir reduction and grapes. Note: Hedgehog mushrooms are a wild variety found in the forests of North America and Europe. If they’re out of season, chanterelles may be substituted.

Warm ¼ cup (50 mL) of the butter in a small cast-iron or nonstick pan and roast the pears, mushrooms, onions, and speck together over low heat for approximately 10 minutes, adding up to ½ cup (125 mL) more butter as required until the pears start to caramelize. Remove the grouse to a platter and deglaze the roasting pan with the red wine, stirring to scrape up the brown bits from the bottom and sides of the pan. Ev er yo ne ha s di ff er en t experiences with symptom s and treatmen ts. Always co nsult your health-c ar e pr ac titio ner when you are considering an y ne w lif es ty le an d he al th changes.

Symptoms: Last spring, I developed swelling around my eyes. After months of self diagnosis and avoiding known allergens (gluten, dairy, alcohol), things only got worse. I developed a rash on my chest, spots on my cheeks, forehead and around my lips, causing the corners of my mouth to be cracked and split. Doctors prescribed steroid creams, which only eased the symptoms slightly. An allergist determined I was allergic to dust mites. I knew there was more to it than that, yet I felt totally hopeless. Every time I had a reaction to something, I would hide and become depressed. Health Recommendations: A naturopathic doctor advised me to do an elimination diet yet I didn’t find much of a change. I discovered that nightshade vegetables were causing the eczema to flare up. I avoided them, yet the symptoms still persisted. Another naturopathic doctor did a food sensitivity test that showed sensitivities to all of the nightshade vegetables and about 15 other things (beans, onions, beer and wine, lettuce, and more). I’ve been avoiding these foods now for several months and take various supplements to help strengthen my digestive tract. The Results: Upon implementing a strict diet to avoid the long list of foods my body was recognizing as poisons, my symptoms were finally relieved. It’s difficult to avoid everything all the time, since most of my social life revolves around dinner parties with friends. But when I am careful, my skin is great! I’m also finding that when I do have a reaction, it isn’t as severe, and doesn’t last as long. My naturopath reassures me that in time, once my gut is healed, I will be able to eat most of these foods again. name: Julie Taylor age: 27 occupation: Musician

health issue: anxiety Symptoms: Poor digestion, insomnia, itchy scalp and eyes and excessive mucous Health Recommendations: After many years of seeing doctors, I was referred to a naturopathic doctor by my friend. Within one week of starting the recommended Biobalance diet, developed by Dr. Rudolph Wiley, my health issues disappeared. According to the work of Dr. Wiley, my body does not metabolize sugar or fat well, which was causing the anxiety I have been feeling for most of my life. The results:My relationships have improved dramatically since making the dietary changes. With my diet of local fruits, certain vegetables and white meat from chicken, turkey or fish, while avoiding sugar, red meat, nuts, seeds, beans and tropical fruits, I am the most stable, calm and focused I have ever been in my life and I am enjoying the best health in my last 40 years. While I do miss pastries, avoiding the negative effects these diversions have in my life is more than enough reward to stay on the straight and narrow. name: David Babich age: 58 occupation: Ecomizer, Energy Management Consultants

health issue: chronic cough

} VIVA With the vast number of bath and body products available on the market today; one question still remains, "how do we find the right products for our skin?" Industry beauty leader Spa De Soleil believes the products we use on our skin should be as good for us as what we eat. With this in mind Spa de Soleil launched an incredible selection of bath and inc body products that are environmentally conscientious and effective, including:

Symptoms: Chronic cough with mucous Health recommendations: Following Halloween last year, I got a bad cold that just seemed to stick with me. Although I did get a bit better after initially getting sick, the cough and thick mucous would keep me up at night. After several months of continuous coughing, it was suggested that I avoid dairy products and refined sugars and take cod liver oil. My mom also gave me special probiotics to help with my cold. The results: Within no time at all, my cough started to get better. I was no longer waking up at night and was able to sleep much better. The mucous started to dry up and wasn’t affecting me as much. It took a couple of weeks, however I felt much better.

health issue: cold, chest infection, fatigue Symptoms: Cold leading to a chest infection, fatigue Health recommendations: I have worked with my naturopath for a number of years and have had great results. So when I got a chest infection one week before a 10-kilometre run that I had spent months training for, he was the first person I called. I tried antibiotics but that didn’t help. My naturopathic doctor recommended I have an oxygen treatment with nebulized glutathione added to help clear up the mucous in my lungs. The results: I coughed and coughed after the first treatment, yet could instantly feel things getting better. After three treatments, I felt great and managed to run the 10-kilometre race, knocking five minutes off last year’s time! name: Tracey Wilkie age: 38 occupation: caledonia integrated Services Viva WANTS TO HE AR FROM YOU! escape to chatham bars inn Cape Cod hotel combines luxury with eco-friendly touches by bonnie siegler

S

ettled amidst salty air and seaside breezes, with sandy beaches and the roll of the Atlantic surf right at its doorstep, Chatham Bars Inn, just 90 minutes from Boston, is one of Cape Cod’s finest luxury sea resorts. Built in 1914 and designated an historic building, the 40 rooms in the Main Building (217 in total) have been restored to their original grandeur with several offering sweeping views of the blue Atlantic.

“All our improvements and renovations have been made as eco-friendly as possible,” says Jenn Allard, marketing coordinator for the resort. Since 2005, the hotel has implemented many green initiatives, including the use of green cleaning products in housekeeping, food and beverage and maintenance; recycling bins throughout the property and in each guest room; occupancy sensors to reduce energy use; compact fluorescent lights and

an advanced recycling program that has yielded hundreds of tons of cardboard, glass, plastic and paper goods. “One of our goals is to educate staff and the various departments to make sure, every day, they are doing all they can to recycle,” says Allard. In fact, a “green committee” was formed in 2007 to issue formal “green” guidelines. Going one step further, a horticulturalist was hired to help in the use of native flora

and fauna, plus the use of water-conserving plants. “We have many drought-tolerant trees and shrubs on the grounds, including Ginkgo biloba,” says Barbara Connolly, the inn’s horticulturist. “We also use an integrated pest management system approach to managing landscape pests, plus we eliminated the early spring lawn fertilization in order to encourage root growth to lessen midsummer watering needs.”

The hotel sources local produce as much as possible. “There’s a fish pier that abuts our property,” says Allard, “and our chef will get seafood early in the morning right off the boat.” Adds Chef Anthony Cole, “at least 95 per cent of the seafood we use in our restaurants is local: lobster, cod, haddock, scallops, clams and oysters to name a few. And we are going to be working with a regional farm to get more local produce this year.” Also in the works is a chef’s garden where herbs will be grown. The spa offers a tranquil and luxurious setting with a unique natural resource — the Atlantic Ocean, whose abundant nutrients are a powerful tool for aiding health and beauty. “The goal of the spa is to incorporate the many positive effects the ocean has on the mind, body and spirit,” says Allard. The Sacred Time At Sea therapy, one of the spa’s signature treatments, uses ocean rose foaming body polish for a gentle full-body exfoliation, then a relaxing soak of organic seaweeds and salts, followed by a massage.

WHAT TO DO AND SEE Say hi to Captain Steve and take advantage of the inn’s free boat shuttle to North Beach Island, where a barefoot walk will reveal pristine tide pools, indigenous birds, protected seals and the Cape Cod coastline. Don’t forget to stop into some of Chatham’s local restaurants, reminiscent of Cheers, to taste some traditional clam chowder.

Luxury abounds in this eco-friendly setting, from the sweeping verandahs to the clapboard white cottages. Many famous faces have enjoyed Chatham Bars Inn’s motto of “relax, rejuvenate, restore,” including Harry Connick Jr., Melissa Etheridge, James Taylor and local Boston sports team players. With unparalleled service, delicious dining and picturesque charm, the Cape’s Chatham Bars Inn seems to have it all. “Some people think Cape Cod is more quaint than luxurious,” says Allard, “but I think we really have everything here and offer the best of both worlds.”

STRESS Know its effects and consequences

The World Health Organisation (WHO) indicates that by 2020, depression will become the 2nd leading cause of disability. The harm resulting from stress is the cause of up to 35% of the absentee rate in the workplace. A third of the population would also be affected by anxiety. No one wants to be a part of these dire statistics.

upsets…), emotional (irritation, agitation, anxiety, difficulty concentrating…) or behavioural (disorganisation, interrelational problems, avoiding demanding situations...). Do you recognize yourself in these? If you are experiencing some of these symptoms it is important to act now.

STRESS, WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

I FEEL GOOD!

The stress response is the body’s reaction which enables us to react to various threats, benign or serious, that we face on a daily basis. Th is reaction is meant for short term protection: confrontation (the reflex to catch a ball when it is thrown in our face), fl ight (running to shelter for protection from a storm) or immobilisation (standing still faced with a wild animal). These decisions must be taken rapidly.

There is some natural solutions for a healthy stress management: 5-L-HTP helps promote balanced mood: Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract, 5-L-HTP, once absorbed by the body, is transformed into serotonin. Th is neurotransmitter enables the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain and leads to the regulation of mood, anxiety, appetite and sleep. Hops are used in phytotherapy to help relieve nervousness. Largely harvested for the production of beer, hops also grow wild in many regions of the world and their therapeutic uses have been used for thousands of years in Greece, Italy, India, China and by Native Americans. Passionflower is used in phytotherapy to help sleep, especially in cases of agitation or insomnia related to mental stress. Native Americans abundantly used passionflower in the kitchen and for the treatment of certain ailments. European explorers introduced it to Europe where, even today, passionflower is included in the composition of many medicinal preparations.

A stressful situation stimulates the production of cortisol, a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. By stimulating the blood glucose levels, cortisol frees the necessary energy from the body’s reserves to respond in a stressful situation. When stress is constant, the body enters into a “resistance phase”, during which the adrenal glands continually secrete cortisol. Too much cortisol creates many physiological consequences: • Exhaustion of the adrenal glands • Increase of blood glucose levels (cause of diabetes) • Decrease in calcium absorption levels (cause of osteoporosis) • Slower digestion (cause of weight gain and different digestive upsets such as ulcers) • Deterioration of the dermis (skin aging) • Weakened immune system. Constant secretion of cortisol tires the hypothalamus, which is then unable to exercise its normal regulatory function. Too much cortisol in the hypothalamus is a cause of depression.

Jasmin Buds (Jasminum offiCinale): Also known as poet’s jasmine, jasmin buds are renowned for their sweet, calming and soothing smell. They contain benzyl acetate, which is well absorbed by the skin. As a result, it is a great ingredient in foundations to matte out oily skin.

Cupuaçu Butter (theoBroma Grandiflorium) Cupuaçu butter is extracted from the Cupuaçu tree in Brazil. It’s a rich, creamy, lubricating butter that softens the skin. Cupuaçu butter has high levels of phytosterol, a group of steroid alcohols that naturally occur in plants. Phytosterol is largely responsible for cupuaçu’s ability to absorb high levels of water, allowing the butter to recover the skin’s natural moisture and elasticity.

horoscope

by chrissie blaze

September 27 urges you to use diplomacy and tact in potentially difficult situations.

ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your health is good and a spectacular combination of the Sun and Jupiter bring you abundant energy. Take opportunities that come your way now, rather than just enjoying the good feelings; if you do, new career avenues can open up. An interesting friendship or romantic relationship could begin around September 17.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You prefer to be busy, yet in September you long for some down time. Take time out in the solace of nature to de-stress. This is a great time for reflection and review. On September 23, the Sun moves into Libra, bringing increased confidence and vitality.

September is the perfect time to focus on self improvement, such as a diet and exercise routine, in order to handle the intense period you’re now in. When Mercury opposes Uranus, you may be tempted to speak out. Proceed cautiously to avoid friction between your home life and career.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 – Nov. 21) As a Scorpio, you experience intense, deep feelings which can be difficult to express. Now, with Mercury trine Pluto, you have the green light. Seek honest communication and you will feel a weight lifting from your shoulders. Let the healing begin! It’s also the time to work on creative projects.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Remember to nurture your soul this month. The Pisces full moon reminds you that without a spiritual foundation, fulfillment will be elusive. Enjoy the brilliant Mercury/ Jupiter trine around September 14; other people are now listening! You’re feeling restless around September 25; be aware that change is on the horizon.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You have been challenged by relationships lately however things should ease in this area and you’re now more free to focus on your personal goals. Mars brings you the courage to make a positive change in important relationships around September 18. Be compassionate and allow your intuition to guide you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) September 2-3 is a great time to relax and rejuvenate with a friend or loved one. If you’re seeking romance, this could blossom around September 11 when Venus and Mars join forces. The Libra New Moon on

Jupiter brings opportunities for financial increase and, with Mars in cautious Cancer, you’re enthusiastic to budget; perhaps a new experience for you! However, around September 6, too much caution can make your stir crazy. Strive for balance and vitality around September 17, when Mars joins Neptune, to avoid depleting energy reserves.

TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20) September begins with the Sun making a pleasant relationship to abundant Jupiter in your own sign. You feel good about life; optimistic, confident and full of vitality! Life gets even better around September 11-14 when your ruler, Venus, joins with Mars. Smell the roses, practice yoga and meditate; be thankful!

GEMINI (May 21-June 21) You love to dance and move, physically as well as mentally, seeing the world from different angles. This is clear in September as your attention moves between your work and desire to play; balance the mundane with your highest aspirations. September 14 is a great day for understanding your destiny.

CANCER (June 22-July 21) Change is in the air. On September 12, Mercury makes a spectacular trine with Pluto and Jupiter at the full moon, filling you with positive power and energy, and strong ideas and goals. The changes happening now are part of a bigger pattern that continues in 2012 and beyond.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may feel a little isolated around September 11, so spend quiet time alone rather than trying to fit in. Focus on relaxation rather than vigorous exercise. When the full moon is in Pisces, you’re faced with a decision. Listen to your heart and act in accordance with your own feelings.
