Your chance

to win! Leslie Witol Position at Viva Finance Administrator On Balanced Living Keeping active has always been a part of my life. I’ve never enjoyed working out on my own, so I try to schedule two days a week for organized sports. Team activities allow me to exercise and socialize at the same time. To keep fit, I walk whenever I can and always take the stairs. Recently, my commute to work changed from a drive to public transit. And while I don’t always manage to get a seat or pull out my book, the time in transit gives me those moments to think, reflect and plan, even on a crowded streetcar. Maintaining life balance is also dependent on staying positive and keeping my focus. As the saying goes, anything worthwhile is worth waiting (and working) for.

The Natural Guide toBeautiful Hair It’s time to shine! Get great hair naturally with the best vitamins, oils and treatments for you and the environment by kate daley

1. Looking for a good excuse to indulge in some dark chocolate? Too little fat and not enough nutrients can leave your hair lackluster, so load up on Omega-3 fatty acids to treat a dry, fl aky scalp and to promote lustrous locks. Try a conditioning treatment that combines hemp seed oil with Omega-3s to repair dry hair. 2. An iron deficiency can lead to hair loss, so check your levels and include plenty of red meats, chickpeas, tofu and fortified products in your diet or try an iron supplement. Look for hair care products with amino acids to prevent hair loss. 3. Henna-based hair dyes are a great way to amp up your colour without toxic chemicals. Try kits that mix henna with other ingredients such as cocoa butter to help it cling to the hair. There are also dyes that are free of formaldehydes and have low peroxide levels to reduce your chemical exposure while still fi xing your roots.

styling products are plant based. Look for hair sprays with organic quinoa protein to hold style naturally. 5. Try and wash your hair every other day to keep the natural oils in

your hair and control oil production. If you want to wait in between washes, look for products with natural cornstarch to absorb oil before you brush it out. 6. Treat wet hair with care. Strands are most vulnerable when wet so

use a wide-tooth comb and apply a nourishing oil. Massage rosemary, olive or argan oil into strands or an all-natural, leave-in conditioner and let your hair air dry at least halfway before blow drying. 7. We all know we should take our vitamins and eat our veggies to stay healthy, yet did you know certain vitamins can help give you healthy hair? Vitamins A, C, E and biotin all help your hair create healthy oils and even increase scalp circulation. Load up on whole eggs, liver, rice, milk or try a supplement for good sources of biotin.

4. Your hair needs a detox just as much as your body. If you’re

constantly spritzing on hairspray, slathering on gel, or swimming in chlorine, your strands will gather buildup, making hair look dull. Try a deep cleanser with tea tree oil or vinegar and make sure your

8. Get back to basics – choose shampoos and conditioners free of

parabens, phosphates, sulphates, artificial colour or fragrance – your hair (and the environment) will thank you for it!

High Heel

Hazards What you slip on your feet could age your body. How to walk tall without the pain by christine cho

I

t’s no secret that we love our high heels. We’re faithful stiletto lovers and we can’t resist the draw of leg-lengthening, outfit-completing pain machines. High heels undoubtedly make many of us feel confident and look stylish; however, the hazards to our health aren’t so pretty. According to Glenn Paul Uy II, Doctor of Chiropractic and founder of Dancefeet custom orthotics, three of the most common foot problems associated with poorly fitted high-heeled shoes are: Q Neuromas (areas of burning sensation in the toes) Q Bunions (swelling, pain on the base of the big toe) Q Hammer toes (bunching of the toes) Additionally, when we wear high heels, we increase the risk of developing a forward pelvic tilt or a compensatory hump or hunch at the top of our backs. Over time, feet that aren’t cared for tend to look worn

Aging by the decade and aged; however, there are things we can do to prevent and treat both the health and beauty damage wearing high heels can cause: Q Ensure your shoes fit properly: they should not squeeze your feet or cause discomfort or pain, so make sure to choose the correct shoe size Q Reduce the amount of time you wear heels and keep an extra pair of flats or low-heeled shoes handy to switch at some point in your day to give your feet and body a break Q Reduce the height of your heels Q Perform regular calf and foot stretches Q Ensure your foot has proper alignment and support, so look for custom orthotics made specifically for high heels Remember – neglecting feet at any age can cause serious health concerns and can prematurely age the skin in look and feel. Young feet are smooth, soft, and healthy. We can all take at least a few small steps (albeit in our pretty heels) toward happy, healthy feet!

Your feet will not be young forever, so don’t take them for granted! Show them love with regular moisturizer day and night. Learn to love other shoe styles, such as cute ballerina flats, low kitten heels, flat slouchy boots and low wedge over-the-knee boots – high heels are sexy for a night out, yet be creative with your fashion! Get regular pedicures to remove dead skin and promote circulation. Continue the spa treatment at home in the shower with a weekly pumice/foot file and scrub ritual. Massage your feet and legs regularly to stimulate blood flow, especially after a long day on your feet. Make sure to use a rich foot cream, particularly at night before bed (for extra moisture-locking, put on socks right after you apply cream).

Q | Over the last year I have developed sudden, deep wrinkles around my eyes, not to mention chronic dark circles. Is there anything you can recommend that would help?

Q | I’m worried about damage to my skin after spending the day outside. What are some natural treatments I can use to repair my skin from sunburn and sun exposure?

-Johanna, Moncton

- Allyn, Calgary

A | Dear Johanna,

A | Dear Allyn,

The appearance of wrinkles is a sign of aging that we all experience. Wrinkles usually appear gradually, depending on genetics and lifestyle. If you have noticed a sudden increase in deep wrinkles and dark circles you may want to seek medical advice as there may be an underlying cause. Hormone imbalances can have a dramatic effect on aging and can result in deeper wrinkles as estrogen levels decrease.

If you have a burn I would suggest that you apply a generous amount of Aloe Vera gel until the sunburn is gone. Try applying a mask made from oatmeal as it has properties to shorten the duration of the burn as well as prevent peeling or blistering. If you have blisters, be careful not to pop them as you risk the chance of getting an infection. Vitamin A can be used internally and externally as it reduces the amount of free radical damage to cells which causes damage and may lead to skin cancer.

You may want to consult with a Holistic Allergist as food intolerances such as gluten can be a cause of dark circles. Check with your physician for vitamin deficiencies and anemia as these are also attributed to dark circles. Lifestyle also plays a large part – smoking, consuming caffeinebased drinks and a lack of sleep can all contribute to the look of advanced aging. Ensure that you are eating a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and green vegetables. Try using an eye gel with Vitamin K, which helps blood coagulation and circulation.

You may want to see an esthetician for a hydrating facial to gently remove dead cells as well as soothe and hydrate the skin. For permanent damage and to address pigmentation issues I would suggest a series of photo-rejuvenation treatments, which are effective at reducing fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. I highly recommend the use of a natural sunscreen and mineral powder as protection when spending time outside and using moisturizer to keep skin hydrated to avoid further sun damage.

Preventing Arthritis by joyce johnson, nd

The natural way to protect your joints

M

any of us feel a little pain and stiffness, especially in the morning or after exercise, yet when combined with joint swelling, joint deformity or a reduced range of motion, know the risks. It could be arthritis, which can seriously impact quality of life – the pain can be so severe that some may not be able to get dressed, open a door, or even hold a fork. The disease has multiple causes that are influenced by diet, lifestyle and heredity, yet there are many preventative measures to try. Be proactive! Try topical creams and lotions with active ingredients such as camphor or menthol for pain relief. Since there are different forms of arthritis, there is not a single prescription that will help all sufferers and there is no single treatment that is right for everyone. Talk to your healthcare practitioner about what’s best for you.

veryone has a brief lapse in memory from time to time – it’s part of human nature! Most of the time, being forgetful is just a regular part of life; however, protecting your memory and the memory of those you care about is certainly something to think about as Alzheimer's disease is thought to be on the rise in Canada. As there are plenty of preventative measures that can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, awareness and early screening are very important for both you and those you love. If the bouts of forgetfulness are worrying you, a new self evaluation called “test your memory” may be something to consider. The test is a powerful screening tool for the detection of Alzheimer’s disease and it can be taken at home. Although self evaluation can be helpful, it is also important to discuss your risk and your family’s risk of memory impairment with your healthcare provider. You or someone you know might not be feeling as sharp as usual or may be feeling more forgetful than normal. Although there is likely nothing

Strong Hips Help Weak Knees

“Three to four million Canadians suffer knee-related injuries because of running each year,” says Dr. Reed Ferber at the University of Calgary. His study measured whether runners with knee pain benefit from an intensive hip-strengthening program. “We gave injured runners a series of exercises to strengthen their hip muscles and within three weeks we found those runners had less pain, less stride-to-stride variability in their movement and more strength to help them run safely,” he says. “Th is study is great news for runners who suffer with chronic knee pain – we’ve shown that strengthening those critical hip muscles helps runners restore a more consistent, predictable pattern of movement, reduce knee pain and stay on the roster for that next race.”

Sex Life…

According to a new scientific study of natural aphrodisiacs by researchers at the University of Guelph, both ginseng and saffron are proven performance boosters. “Aphrodisiacs have been used for thousands of years all around the world, but the science behind the claims has never been well understood or clearly reported,” says Massimo Marcone, a professor in Guelph’s Department of Food Science. The researchers examined hundreds of studies on consumable aphrodisiacs to investigate claims of sexual enhancement. They discovered that panax ginseng, saffron and yohimbine, a natural chemical from yohimbe trees in West Africa, improved human sexual function. While their findings support the use of foods and plants for sexual enhancement, the authors urge caution, saying that more clinical studies are needed to better understand the effects.

Low libido How to cope with female sexual arousal disorder rebecca rosenblat, bsc, lc, adr, eft

“N

ot tonight,” Anna S. mutters to her husband nearly every night before rolling over to fall asleep. Except she doesn’t always fall asleep; instead, Anna lies awake and feels guilty that she doesn’t want to have sex. She wonders if there could be something wrong with her. Lately she has been making excuses – she’s tired, she has a headache, she has to get up early – or she sneaks off to bed early so that she is already asleep when her husband comes to bed. Although she can’t

remember the last time they had sex, she knows it’s been at least a month – maybe two. When sexual desire isn’t as forthcoming as it once was, some of us are perfectly fine with it (and possibly relieved), while others, like Anna S., mourn paradise lost. Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD) can be the result of any number of causes. The good news? Most of the time, with a little bit of effort, our libido can be restored.

Treating Low Libido Naturally REMEDY

DOSAGE

RESULT

Damiana Extract

2-4 g of dried leaf, three times a day

Produces mild euphoria, which relaxes the body, reduces anxiety and balances female hormone levels

Dong Quai

3-15 g a day

Balances both hormone levels as well as cycles and promotes healthy blood circulation.

Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng

120 mg of Ginkgo Biloba with 200 mg of Ginseng per day

Promotes healthy blood flow, lift spirits and boost energy and sex drive.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandosterone) Supplements

25 mg a day

Boosts libido in older women when their natural hormone levels decline

L-Arginine

2-3 g several times a day, with a max of 9 g in a 24-hour period

Promotes easy blood flow through the arteries

Yohimbe

5-10 drops three times a day

Yohimbe seems to improve the efficacy of other supplements

Shatavri Extract

500 mg capsules, once or twice a day

Moisturizes tissue of sexual organs – and some believe that it also helps improve testosterone levels

Combination Products

Depends upon the product

Combination supplements containing L-arginine, ginseng, ginkgo, damiana, multivitamins and minerals have shown the most promising results of all natural products in enhancing libido

Kegel Exercises

As often as you can for 10 reps at a time, with increasing intensity

Doing Kegels increases circulation, tones the “love muscles,” improves vaginal health and often awakens the nether zones, so they send the right messages to the brain

Dosages may vary

PHYSICAL CAUSES • Anemia (common in women with heavy periods and after childbirth) • Medications (especially the Pill, certain antidepressants, and some over-the-counter products) • Illicit drugs, alcohol and smoking • Poor health (or diet) and medical conditions (such as diabetes) • Post-baby coolness (common after childbirth, due to dramatic hormonal changes) • Low testosterone levels (often associated with an agerelated decline in the hormone DHEA) • Low nitric oxide levels (cause poor circulation, affecting the nether zones) PSYCHOLOGICAL CAUSES • Stress • Anxiety • Depression • Relationship issues • Unresolved sexual trauma OTHER CAUSES • Fatigue • Low energy • Response cycle flip-flop (desire and arousal switch places)

While quite distressing, FSAD is a fairly common condition that often resolves itself, or at the very least can be addressed in most cases. The best place to begin is by looking through the list of causes and working on eliminating whatever you can on your own, such as smoking, drinking or poor diet – and speaking with your healthcare practitioner about the rest. Allow yourself to be aroused, focusing on how you'd like to feel versus how you are feeling – if you have experienced the fl ip-flop, desire should kick in, along with hormonal help for the future. Th is is why the more a woman engages in sexual activity, the more she craves it; the less she indulges, the less she wants it, entrapping her in a vicious cycle. Beyond that, there are various natural remedies that many women swear by, even though research is preliminary. When using an herbal remedy, make sure to inform your healthcare practitioner. digestive health

Health

Better

from the Inside Maintaining a healthy digestive system can do more than just save you from stomach trouble by michelle latinsky, rd

W

e all suffer from digestive “issues” from time to time - bloating, gas, and constipation. Yet a healthy digestive system is responsible for more than preventing tummy trouble - it may also improve your energy, get your skin glowing and keep your immune system strong. Get your digestive health back on track.

DON’T FORGET THE H2O

To help break food down and move it more efficiently through your digestive tract, be sure to drink water both during and after meals. One of the most common digestive complaints is constipation, which you can remedy by increasing your fluid intake. Th is is especially important as you start to consume more fibre-rich foods, because additional fluids are needed to move the bulk through your system. Aim for eight to 10 cups of pure, fi ltered water every day. GOOD BUGS TO THE RESCUE

Probiotics are healthy bacteria that inhabit your digestive tract where they stimulate the immune system, improve digestion and aid toxin removal. However, antibiotic use, stress and an unbalanced diet can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the body, reducing their protective effects. To get more probiotics, try probiotic-rich foods such as miso or kefir. Better yet, choose a high-quality supplement to obtain a daily therapeutic level of probiotics.

Organika Ultimate Fibre (180 g, $ 22.49)

If you inhale your food or eat on the run, you’re more likely to suffer from indigestion, bloating and other digestive problems. Try and chew your food a little longer to help break it down into smaller parts. Th is allows your mouth to produce more saliva, which contains a digestive enzyme called salivary amylase that kick starts the digestive process. Your stomach can also process food more efficiently when it receives it as smaller particles.

DIGESTIVE HELPERS

If you’re prone to bloating, fl atulence or heartburn after eating, that’s a sign you may be having some difficulty digesting food. The problem may have a lot to do with poor dietary choices. Digestive enzymes found naturally in raw foods are destroyed when food is refined, processed and cooked, leaving our bodies robbed of energy needed for growth, maintenance and tissue repair. To reduce uncomfortable digestive symptoms, try taking one to two broadspectrum digestive enzymes (those that digest carbohydrates, fats and proteins) with meals to help your body break down these nutrients more effectively. BULK UP

For better digestive health, try adding some fibre to your diet. Health experts recommend that healthy adults consume 25 to 38 grams of fibre each day, yet most Canadians eat less than half of this amount on a regular basis. Aim for seven to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, especially apples, citrus fruit, carrots and broccoli. Choose whole grain NOTE Don’t forg breads, cereals and pastas rather than refi ned et to consult yo ur health“white” products and add a few tablespoons of care prac tit ioner for any heal bran or ground fl axseed on top of your regular th concerns. bowl of cereal or yogurt.

BOB GREENE’S Secrets to staying healthy and looking younger by bonnie siegler

F

or centuries, humans have been searching for secrets to turn back the clock. Yet fitness guru, best-selling author and Oprah’s own personal trainer, Bob Greene, has discovered that looking younger, feeling younger and being younger is no mystery. In his new book, 20 Years Younger, Greene offers those searching for a more youthful appearance, better health and more energy a science-based plan for aging. For over 30 years, Greene has amassed a vast knowledge of diet and exercise; yet it was after he became Oprah Winfrey’s personal trainer that he became a celebrity, recognized for his expertise on everything from weight loss to diabetes prevention and care. “If you had to pick one supplement we are deficient in and we know helps retard the aging process, it is the Omega-3 supplement,” says Greene. “We were meant to get about equal the ratio between Omega3s and Omega-6s – it’s supposed to be 1:1. What has happened through the years for many different reasons is that very few places feed naturally when it comes to cattle, poultry, or animals that used to eat seeds and grass. That used to foster a high amount of Omega3s but now it’s just really fish … fl axseed and a little bit in walnuts. If you look at cultures such as the Mediterranean region, which we studied for the book, they have incredible amounts of centurions who have the Omega ratio about 1:3. You look at the United States and Canada and we’re 1:16; that ratio is very conducive to aging and certain disease processes and most of them age us.” Not only is Greene concerned about diet in the anti-aging process, he has broken down the process into what he calls the four pillars: exercise, diet, skin care and sleep. Along with offering advice on eating foods high in antioxidants, high Vitamin C content and phytonutrients, he underscores the importance of daily exercise. With a degree in exercise physiology and as a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, Greene stresses the benefits of incorporating some sort of movement into your everyday life. “When you think about aging, one of the defi ning things is the loss of tissue, whether it’s nerve, muscle, bone,” he says. “Nothing quite compares to being active and exercising … we need a lot of it, but it has gone away in our society.” He cites examples. “Just 20 or 30 years ago, we were way more active. We walked to the store, we chopped wood – that’s all gone away. So exercise is the number one thing for overall longevity and a sub-category of that is you need a variety, you need to do it where it’s challenging and you need both aerobic and strength training.”

“I’m more motivated right now because of my children, my wife and family than in my 20s and in some ways stronger. I want to stay around longer for my family.”

The Perfect Balance

At 53 years of age, Greene says he feels better now than ever before in his life. His days begin at 6:30 a.m. with a breakfast of oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts, half a grapefruit and a cup of green tea. He supplements with a multivitamin, Omega-3 fish oil and Vitamin D. Th is all takes place around 7 a.m. His workout is around 8 a.m. of 20 minutes on the elliptical, 20 minutes walking on a steep grade treadmill and five minutes of balance exercises followed by 10 minutes of abdominal work and stretching. Usually by 9:30 a.m., he’s out the door and off to work. “I’m more motivated right now because of my children, my wife and family than in my 20s and in some ways stronger. I want to stay around longer for my family.” With a genetic predisposition for diabetes – his father, who recently passed away, mother and sister all have the disease – Greene is well aware that good eating habits, regular and varied exercise and adequate amounts of sleep are critical for his own health. “I’m the only one in my entire family without diabetes so it’s looking like the activity and watching what I eat, maintaining my weight has a lot to do with the disease from my small case study. But each person is different … Another area of wellbeing is keeping a positive outlook on life – the happiness factor and all that goes with that. I’ve been researching this 20 Years Younger book for 10 years and my life has changed within that time frame. My daughter, Kylee, is four and a half and I have a two-year-old son, Kaden, now, too. Hands down, having children has changed everything and taken it to another level. So I’m very motivated right now to stay balanced and healthy and that has to do with keeping my body younger.”

Q | I have fibrous breast tissue in my upper

left breast and have had it for over almost two years now. Are there certain foods I should avoid or anything else I could do? - Tina

A | Dear

Tina,

Thank you for your question. Fibrocystic breast tissue, although considered to be completely benign, still indicates a degree of biochemical imbalance. First, it would be important to steer clear of certain chemicals such as parabens, plastics, fire retardants and certain pesticides used in agriculture and for cosmetic gardening. These environmental chemicals, known as xenoestrogens, can adversely affect the metabolism of hormones both at the tissue level and through regular detoxification roots in certain people. Further, eating more cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower) would be very helpful in supporting the healthy elimination of estrogens and some of the xenoestrogens discussed above. The major supplemental treatment for fibrocystic breasts is oral or topical iodine therapy. In my practice, iodine is only used at higher than recommended doses after patients undergo an iodine load test. If performed by a knowledgeable practitioner, this test is able to support the requirement for higher doses of iodine.

Q | Could you please recommended some natural treatment options for scabies? - Julie

A | Dear Julie, Scabies is a highly contagious skin disease spread by direct contact with mite-infected individuals. Areas around the wrists or hands are most commonly affected; however, the infection can occur on any part of the skin. The degree of reaction to the mite infection is very individualized as the symptoms of scabies mostly come from an allergic response to the mite itself. The itching from a scabies infection may be alleviated using topical creams such as calamine, chamomile or aloe and cool, damp compresses. If a scabies infection is brought into the household, all clothing and bedding must be isolated and properly cleaned to reduce further spreading of the scabies mite. Despite being moderately effective, most pharmaceutical agents to treat scabies infection are quite toxic. Tea tree, lemon grass, neem, lavender and essential oils containing terpinene compounds have been shown to be effective in the topical treatment of scabies. The essential oils are used over the entire surface of the skin as an oil or in a cream for 7-10 days. Topically, essential oils are usually well tolerated; however, they can cause local irritation and contact dermatitis in some people. NOTE

Leslie Bibb is sipping freshly made green juice in her New York City apartment on a brisk, yet sunny, morning. Bibb, her German Shepherd, Sadie, and boyfriend Sam Rockwell have all just returned from a leisurely walk in the park. Yet the 5’9” beauty still manages to look the epitome of Hollywood glamour. “I think the quickest way for me to unplug and unwind is to be in nature – go for a hike when I’m in Los Angeles, a walk in New York,” says Bibb, who was raised in Virginia. “Nature can be a city to me because it’s just a different form of it. I’ve been soaking up a lot of creative energy here by going to the theatre often. I find a lot of inspiration and solace in watching great people.”

“Shine bright ... We should all be our best selves and do that unapologetically” The 36 year-old actress has good reason for her need to unplug and unwind. She has just returned from shooting a TV pilot in Dallas with Annie Potts, she had recently been in Boston, putting the finishing touches on her upcoming fi lm, The Zookeeper, followed by a five-day Cabo San Lucas vacation with Rockwell where “we slept, drank margaritas and just relaxed – just what the doctor prescribed.” Now, Bibb will star in ABC’s new fall comedy, Good Christian Belles. Her life has been a whirlwind since winning a modelling contest at the age of 16 on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Bibb acknowledges she is the woman she is today because of all that went before her. “My dad died when I was very young from an accident at work, so my mom was a single parent and I was the youngest of four girls. I think living in New York and being on my own at a young age forced me to grow up faster than others.” She came to the attention of TV viewers in the WB show, Popular, playing the beautiful, straight-A student and cheerleader, Brooke McQueen. “I took so much for granted then,” she remembers. “I don’t know if I was fi lled with as much gratitude as I have now. I have a real

appreciation for life and I think the woman I have evolved into has been due to weathering certain storms.” Bibb is certainly familiar with life – and loss. Besides the early death of her father, the actress married in 2003, only to divorce a year later. Now happily ensconced in her relationship with Rockwell, currently on stage in A Streetcar Named Desire, Leslie says he helps her be her better self. “I sometimes feel people look at me and say, ‘Oh, she’s got an easy life.’ But it’s not! I work my ass off to look the way I do; I work my ass off to make the living I make, and I work my ass off trying to be the best person I can be. You have to ask questions throughout life, she says. “I think curiosity is the key to life. It’s the key to being young; it’s the key to being a great person. As we get older, we lose that and fear somehow takes over. I fight fear daily. Everyday I tell myself to do something that scares me.” Fears don’t always have to take the form of grandiose anxieties or trepidations, as Leslie explains. “Picking up the phone and calling my accountant is a fear,” she laughs. “Bungy jumping in New Zealand was a fear but once I jumped, it was amazing. Okay, I don’t know that I’ll ever overcome my fear of snakes, but once you put a little light on a fear and just do it, it all becomes less scary. Like eating. I love to eat a lot of food. So it’s literally the survival of the fittest because I have to run out the calories I intake. But I’m not afraid to eat, because I know I’ll work it off.” It’s a testament to Bibb’s discipline and ability to understand the necessities of her life. A former Pilates devotee, Bibb now works out regularly with a trainer on a dance-based routine. “She’s a great trainer and kicks my butt but she has really helped change my body for the better.” Jump rope, hoola hoop, push-ups, sit-ups all take place in a dance studio setting. “I don’t like heavy weights because I like long, lean muscles, but again, I do like to eat.” Not surprisingly, Bibb does not set foot on scales. “If my jeans are too tight then I go

by that,” she says. “Scales are a nightmare because if you’re working out and you have really great muscles, you’re going to weigh more. I’ve been skinny fat where everything is flabby – I don’t love that look at all. I like being strong and feeling fit.” Another step toward that goal was omitting gluten and wheat from her diet two years ago, after suffering decades with a distended belly and bouts of nausea after eating gluten products. Staples in her kitchen today run the gamut from Kombucha tea to fresh, green veggies for her juicing – kale, spinach, cucumbers, green apple, ginger - to eggs and avocados. “I like to cook simple, whole foods,” she says. Her favorite Saturday morning pastime also helps keep her fit. “Sam and I like to watch old Soul Train shows and sometimes we’ll get up and dance around. I love dancing anyway. You know what? Dancing makes me feel feminine. Just put music on in the house and I’ll dance around.” I mention her conversation is peppered with the mention of Rockwell – “He makes me laugh all the time,” she says. “I always find him – and a sense of humour – sexy.” There’s a certain youthful exuberance that balances Bibb’s maturity and poise with goofiness and self-described “klutzy-ness.” The mention of being a red carpet veteran brings out a self-deprecating, “I don’t think I have very good style,” yet she looks magnificently elegant at every event. “You know, I don’t even carry makeup around with me,” she says. Instead, she carries something much more important. “I know this might sound corny but I have an excerpt of Nelson Mandala’s 1994 inaugural speech in my wallet all the time,” she says. “It’s about letting your light shine and I read it when I feel my lights dimming. It reminds me to shine bright and to be unapologetic about shining brightly. We should all be our best selves and do that unapologetically.” Her unfettered optimism and enthusiasm intact, Bibb gives a once-over in self reflection. “I feel really good right now; it’s a really good time in my life. I’m grateful, comfortable in my skin and happy.”

Giving Back

Making the most of your charitable donations

by kate robertson

G

iving to charity is certainly a good deed that not only helps others, it makes you feel good, too. Canadians have much to be thankful for – peace, democracy and freedom of speech – and we know it. To show our thanks, we like to give back and support the communities and causes that support the ways of life we value so much. In fact, Canada has one of the most active and expansive non-profit sectors in the world. In 2007, Canadians donated a total of $10 billion and volunteered 2.1 billion hours – no small feat for a country of (only) 33 million. Yet with more than 85,000 charitable organizations nationwide and volunteers who work hard to sustain

medical research, improve local communities and troubled regions abroad, how do you decide which charities to support? Think carefully about your own values and ethics and what is most important to you – whether it’s the environment, animal welfare or international development, your contribution will mean the most to you when it’s supporting a cause close to your own heart. Reflect on your own life – what opportunities did you have because of the generosity of others? Maybe it’s something you missed out on in your childhood that you would like to ensure another child gets to experience. Choosing where to donate can be a daunting task. Experts advise donors go beyond simply picking a cause before writing a cheque. Ensure that the money you give will actually make it to its target, and when it does, it will be used wisely. Cathy Barr, the vicepresident of Imagine Canada, a national organization that supports charities and non-profits, recommends that you investigate the kind of impact an organization is making, and if that impact is in tune with your personal ethic. Call the organization to find out more about how much money is spent on programming or research, and how much is spent on overhead such as advertising

and administration. Although the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) no longer enforces rules around what percentage a charity can spend on overhead, it can be worthwhile to spend some time researching an organization’s finances. However, a charity shouldn’t be judged completely on that ratio — some associations face more difficult challenges than others and are forced to spend more to raise those dollars.

represent the charity they say. Some create marketing materials for a “soundalike” association that leads a donor to believe they’re giving to a reputable organization, claiming they are with the National Institute for an organization that doesn’t exist rather than the Canadian Institute for an organization that does. Or they will fabricate a non-profit organization completely and go so far as to create a brand that appears legitimate.

“It’s easier to raise money for baby bears than snakes,” says Barr. “Th is all affects how much it costs to raise money.”

“One organization, based in Vancouver, claimed it was funding housing for disadvantaged youth,” Salterio says of one scam he uncovered in his research. “They had a website with pictures of the youth, pictures of the houses, a very impressive-sounding board of directors who I suspect didn’t know they were on the board. It looked completely legitimate.”

Barr says donors should double check that a charity is, in fact, registered with the CRA. Only registered charities can issue tax receipts and are required to report their financial statements. Yet just because a charity is registered with the CRA does not necessarily mean that it is operated efficiently and effectively — nor does it mean that non-profits that are not registered are not worthwhile causes. “The CRA defines a charity pretty narrowly,” Barr says. “Sports organizations, like the Ontario Soccer Association, are the most common ones that are not going to get charitable status.” Steven Salterio, a professor at Queen’s University’s School of Business, agrees that it’s a good idea to research an organization before donating to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck. In a study he co-authored, Salterio found that the most common type of fraud is committed by people who do not actually

Salterio recommends that if you are solicited on the street or at your door by canvassers, ask them for literature that can help you make a decision about whether or not to give. If you are certain the organization is a legitimate one yet you’re not sure if the solicitor is a verifiable representative of the non-profit, write a cheque to the organization rather than the individual.

RED FLAGS Just because someone has a name tag and a clipboard does not mean they are representing themselves honestly. Here are a few red flags to watch out for when considering donating to a non-profit.  If a canvasser will only accept cash, this is highly suspect. Only write cheques to an organization, not an individual — even better, accept literature, do your research, and make an informed decision.  You have called a charity to ask some questions, yet they are reluctant to offer information. Move on! All non-profits and charities should be forthcoming and transparent.  If the charity will issue a tax receipt for more than you are donating, this is fraud — not just on their part, but also on yours. Do not accept receipts for more than you have donated.  Still feel lost? Short on time? Consider donating to an umbrella organization that pre-screens non-profits and can assess who needs what.

oe Carter looks like Gulliver on a Lilliputian’s chair. He is sitting at the kids’ table in the players’ wives and children’s room at Toronto’s Rogers Centre, on a break from shooting a webber naturals commercial on the Blue Jays’ diamond, where he made his famous hit to cinch the Jays’ second consecutive World Series Championship in 1993. When I join him at the miniature table, I have to concede that it is, in fact, impossible to gracefully sit down on a chair only a foot high in a skirt and patent leather pumps. Yet Carter just laughs and fl ashes his trademark grin. “I’m just a big kid at a little table,” he says. Which is an apt description, really, of Carter’s legacy in Canadian baseball history. On October 23, 1993, he made the biggest hit of his life, hitting a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the World Series for the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a defi ning moment and one most Canadians can recall with exceptional clarity – for example, like every other fi fth-grader in North America, I was glued to the TV, clutching a blue J-shaped piece of foam and sporting an oh-so-fabulous early ’90s Blue Jays visor when Carter made the winning hit. “In all of Canada, it’s huge,” says Carter. “Look at Paul Henderson’s goal, my homerun, Sidney Crosby’s goal in the Olympics. But Canada had already won a championship (an Olympic gold medal) for hockey, so for that to happen in baseball here in Canada – that’s huge.” Yet Carter says his game-winning play doesn’t get the respect it deserves south of the border. “Had I played for the Yankees or the Dodgers and hit that type of homerun, then it surely would have been number one in the States. But because I played in Canada, it doesn’t get the due diligence that it should. That really upsets me, not from a personal standpoint but from a country standpoint. It shouldn’t be dictated by where you play.” Nevertheless, he’s Canada’s biggest baseball hero and we’re happy to call him our own. “Canada is a second home to me,” he says. “The seven years I played here were seven of the best years I’ve ever had, without a doubt.” He was named to five all-star teams, hit 396 home runs over his career and was the first player to record 100 RBI for three different teams in three consecutive seasons. Yet when I ask him about how he keeps it all balanced, he only wants to tell me about his backyard. “We’re talking about our peonies, all the roses, the azaleas starting to come out,” he says, his eyes lighting up. He even replaced three huge river birches in his backyard in order to plant more flowers and perennials. “It took me a whole summer to do that and I was just exhausted every single day, but the next year to see all that come to fruition and grow up – I sit on my porch and just look at the

flowers, all different types of colours and everything. It’s beautiful out there – I love doing that. Sounds like an interesting baseball player, huh?” he laughs. Along with a new green thumb, Carter says retirement also gave him a new perspective on fitness. “When I retired it was like, I can just sit back and relax. I don’t have to go work out,” he says. However, he soon realized that working out was a key element in his life. So he now stays in shape by golfing and with a fitness regime that includes 30 to 45 minutes on the elliptical, speed bike work, stretching and a go at the step machine (that he hates). “I’ve had it since 1995 and it probably only has about 10 miles on it,” Carter laughs. “I hate it … that thing is tough.” Carter has found balance in his post-retirement career as well. He and his wife, an interior designer, live in Leawood, Kansas, where they run a development company. “That’s what she enjoys doing, so it wasn’t always about my life, because I basically had mine when I was playing baseball,” he says. “So now it’s time for her to do things that she likes to do, so whatever she wants, she can do.” Together, they built one of the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified homes in Kansas City, Missouri. Carter says he was prompted to seek LEED certification because of the “concerns here on Earth,” he says. “The things that are happening, the resources that are dwindling, we are trying to find more avenues to save the planet. So if you use things that are natural, that are going to help the environment, it will also help with the utility bills.” Carter certainly understands that value, having come from a family of 11 children. The Oklahoma native was born after five sisters and perhaps has them to thank for his kindness and humility, best exemplified when meeting fans. Even though Carter was in the big leagues himself, he understands the magnitude of meeting sports heroes – he is currently featured in a contest with webber naturals in which a lucky fan will watch a Blue Jays game in a luxury box with him. He was star struck himself when his hitting coach took him to meet a mystery guest at midnight in the '80s. “He opens the door, the guy’s in his pyjamas – it’s Willie Mays,” he says. “So we stayed until 5 o’clock in the morning talking about baseball and I’m sitting there going, ‘that’s Willie Mays!’” Twenty-five years and a dream sports career later, Carter makes time for fans because he recalls exactly how he felt talking with Mays. “I had been in the big leagues for a couple of years but a chance at midnight to go to Willie Mays’ room? I was just like, ‘oh, wow – this is awesome!’” he says. “I was in awe the whole time.” With an attitude like that, it’s no wonder why Carter, a baseball giant, feels right at home at the kids’ table.

Travis Milne’s “Rookie’s” Guide to Balanced Living H

e plays a small-town regular guy thrown into the world of urban policing on the popular drama Rookie Blue, with Season Two premiering in June. But Canadian native Travis Milne is no beginner when it comes to leading a balanced and grounded lifestyle. Born and raised in Alberta, it was upon graduation from Red Deer College Performing Arts that he landed a gig hosting an environmentally conscious series, My Green House, which led to a handful of TV roles. Then cult favourite movie, Manson, My Name Is Evil premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival which brought him to the attention of Rookie Blue producers. He now divides his time between Los Angeles and Toronto. Currently, the 24-year-old Milne plays a lot of pick-up basketball for exercise interspersed with runs. “You’ll never find me sitting in front of the TV for more than an hour. I have too much energy.” Working in an uncertain field, Milne says the daily exercise and sports offer him a more balanced lifestyle. “It helps with my sanity actually. When I’m running, it’s not just for exercise but it’s a spiritual thing, so I want to be able to do that for my entire life.” Taking advantage of the Los Angeles climate for outdoor activities doesn’t necessarily translate when he’s living in Toronto winters. “Then I’ll go box for about 30 minutes or play indoor basketball,” says Milne, who takes advantage of his workout know-how and shuns a personal trainer. “Those are my addictions of choice for balanced living.” While boxing, basketball and running are his must-haves for activity, lessening his carbon footprint and leading an environmentally conscious lifestyle are his passions. “Living as carbon free as possible is very important to me,” he says. “For

instance, cars should be driven until they can’t be anymore instead of buying a new one every year just for the cool factor. So in L.A., I drive an old Corolla, not because I have to but because I want to, and in Toronto, I have a Honda Civic.” Milne is now shopping around for a siegler hybrid car. A former carpenter, the actor is keenly by bonnie photograph by traver rains aware of using sustainable and recycled building materials along with eco-friendly paints. Highly unlikely, but if his acting career doesn’t prove successful, Milne is looking toward an environmental engineering career. Portraying Officer Chris Diaz on TV, Milne takes advantage of his athleticism in making his character real. “In Season One, I had to give a character the old one-two punch and I’m always having to chase someone down. This upcoming season, the writers are really making me work it out,” he laughs.

Summer Breakfasts Give your kids a head start to the day by peggy kotsopoulos, rhn

S

ummer vacation is the perfect time to experiment with new breakfast ideas – just be sure to start some good habits that will be easy to stick to in September. Choosing a healthy breakfast gives your kids energy to sustain them throughout the day and kick starts their metabolism first thing in the morning. A sugary start to the day could have the same negative cognitive impact as skipping breakfast entirely. With over 26 per cent of Canadian children overweight or obese and more children facing an early onset of adult-type illnesses and cognitive issues such as ADHD, poor concentration and decreased learning ability, breakfast is more important than ever.

Incorporate Whole Foods:

Opt for whole grains, fresh fruit and proteins, such as nuts and seeds, for longlasting energy and mental alertness. • Sprouted wholegrain bread with natural peanut butter or almond butter provides sustainable energy and protein • Try quinoa as a warm cereal. It’s a complete protein source that contains all essential amino acids and is an excellent source of energy and essential fatty acids. Mash in a banana and stir in coconut flakes for natural sweetness • Make an omelet with Omega-rich free-run eggs and loads of your child’s favourite veggies • Make a smoothie with almond milk, fresh picked, summer fruit and ground chia seeds, or blend leafy greens and

sprouts with fresh fruit, such as bananas and mango – tastes great! Add Healthy Fats

Omega-3s are an essential fatty acid critical for proper brain development and functioning. Studies show that children with the highest levels of DHA (an Omega-3 derivative) have the least risk for depression, bipolar issues and ADHD. Sources of Omega-3 include sacha inchi seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and supplements. • Sprinkle ground flax or chia seeds onto morning cereal or use flax seed oil blended into smoothies • Make your own granola using rolled oats, coconut oil, pumpkin seeds, ground chia and apple butter

French Toast with Omega-Rich Blueberry Jam This breakfast indulgence is rich in protein, energy-boosting carbs, fibre and Omega-3s. French Toast Ingredients: 4 slices sprouted-grain bread (Ezekiel, stonemill, squirly) 1 large, whole, free-run egg 60 ml (¼ cup) hemp or almond milk 0.5 g (½ tsp) cinnamon, ground 2.5 ml (½ tsp) vanilla 15 ml (1 tbsp) coconut oil Directions: Heat coconut oil in large pan or skillet over medium heat. In a shallow bowl, whisk egg, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Dunk each slice of bread into mixture, covering each side. Place in pan and cook both sides until golden brown. Spread with blueberry jam (see below) and serve right away. Guilt-Free Blueberry Jam: Make this the day before – keeps in the fridge for 4-5 days

• Toss sacha inchi seeds into greek yogurt with fresh fruit • Add hemp seed milk to cereals or smoothies for a healthy dose of Omega fatty acids Limit refined sugars, simple carbohydrates & processed foods

These can all cause blood sugar fluctuations, which affect mood, concentration and performance. Kids should stick to under 40 grams of sugar per day. However, many consume close to 100 grams per day! Here’s how to cut down on sugar without compromising taste: • Breakfast cereals: If it’s multi-coloured, frosted, or tastes like dessert, it might be a treat, not an everyday breakfast. Opt for cereals with less than six grams of sugar

per serving and more than five grams of fibre. Try adding fresh berries or a sprinkle of coconut sugar to make a low-sugar, highfibre cereal a hit • Fruit-flavoured yogurt: Switch it up with plain or Greek yogurt for a richer protein boost and sweeten up with apple butter or fresh or frozen fruit • Fruit juice: One cup of fruit juice has about 25 grams of sugar, nearly half the maximum daily intake. Dilute two parts fruit juice with three parts water to cut the sugar intake • Muffins: Choose wisely! A wholegrain raspberry muffin at your favourite coffee shop packs in more than 26 grams of sugar and 17 grams of fat. Try brands that incorporate whole grains, oats, nuts, seeds and fresh fruit or try making your own!

Ingredients: 175 g (1¼ cup) fresh wild blueberries (or other berries/fruits such as strawberries, peaches, etc) 10 g (1 heaping tablespoon) Chia Seeds (can be ground or whole seed) 2.5 ml (½ tsp) vanilla 6 g (1 tsp) coconut sugar (optional) Directions: Puree 105 g (¾ cup) of berries in food processor with vanilla (and optional coconut sugar). Pour into bowl and stir in remaining whole berries and Chia until well combined. Cover and refrigerate overnight and the Chia will gelatinize.

health issue: kidney infections/general health concerns Symptoms Up until the age of 20, I had never taken the time to listen to my body. I was not in tune with its needs and was not aware that my diet and lifestyle choices were preventing me from feeling my best. It was only when I finally became ill with recurrent kidney infections that I decided it was time to take my health into my own hands. With a strong desire to better myself holistically, I decided to seek support from a naturopathic doctor and a clinical counsellor. Health Recommendations In order to enhance my health, I underwent testing for food sensitivities, heavy metals and hormone imbalances. The results of these investigations helped fuel profound changes in my dietary and lifestyle choices. In order to maintain my health, I ensure to exercise, eat a healthy balance of mostly organic foods and take Vitamin D, B complex, liver support and fish oil. The Results In addition to benefiting from nicer hair, nails and skin, I now have more energy and resilience. I have a decreased sense of anxiety and feel much happier about my life and the role I play in its success. Working on my physical and emotional health has allowed me to honour myself and has given me the confidence to pursue my goals. name: Emily Reskovich age: 27 occupation: Graduate student

health issue: sports-related shoulder injury Symptoms I had been experiencing pain in my shoulder from a prior sports injury. After having an ultrasound it was determined that the tear in my rotator cuff had not healed completely. I was experiencing sharp pains and constant aching in my shoulder and neck area. In addition, I had recurring migraines, sometimes every week. As a result, I was missing work and my exercise was greatly modified. Health Recommendations After a year of visiting a physiotherapist, my shoulder strength improved; however, the discomfort during everyday activities and frequent headaches had only marginally subsided. After consulting a naturopathic doctor, I was treated using a cold laser therapy device to encourage healing. The Results After five treatments over a two-week period, the results have been great. Full mobility has returned to my shoulder. I no longer have the shooting pain sensations and the migraines have been significantly reduced. I am glad to have the ability to increase my exercise levels and feel ready to participate in community sports again.

health issue: insomnia Symptoms Over the last few years it had become increasingly difficult for me to get a good night’s sleep which was negatively affecting my life, both personally and professionally. No matter what sleeping pill, tea or relaxation technique I tried, I would either wake up in the middle of the night for hours on end or not get to sleep at all. My diet and, therefore, my digestion suffered as I tried to achieve the energy I needed during the day through unhealthy food and beverage choices. My body and mind had become exhausted and it became evident that something needed to change. Natural Health Recommendations After seeing my naturopathic doctor and having a food sensitivity test done, it was recommended that I follow a detoxification program that excluded wheat, dairy and alcohol for several weeks. The doctor also suggested a few natural supplements and homeopathic remedies to support my sleep patterns, immune system and digestive system. The Results Almost immediately after going on the suggested elimination diet I noticed a significant improvement in my digestion and overall energy (without coffee!). More importantly, for the first time in months I was sleeping through the night and waking up well rested. Making just a few basic changes in my diet and lifestyle was well worth it. name: Craig Fullalove age: 29 occupation: Chartered Accountant

health issue: weight and hormonal imbalance Symptoms Unstable moods, inability to lose weight, bloating, fatigue, urinary tract infections, digestive issues. Health Recommendations I was frustrated because although I would work out at the gym for hours a week, I wasn’t able to lose weight. I also suffered from frequent urinary tract infections. My naturopathic doctor advised me to eliminate foods to which I was sensitive, including wheat, yeast, gluten, soy and certain fruits and vegetables. I was also educated on how to combine different foods that I eat in order to optimize weight loss. I was desperate to uncover the cause of my health issues. The Results Two weeks after following this strict new diet, I had already started to see and feel the results. With the support of a thyroid supplement and probiotics, my body was starting to function properly, resulting in more energy and weight loss with no urinary complications. I can confidently say I no longer have stomach pains or acid reflux. I have lost around 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and counting and feel incredible. I have noticed a huge difference in my weight, moods and menstrual cycle. name: Nicole Briand age: 24 occupation: Dental Receptionist

NO KIDS ALLOWED Sticky fingers, dirty diapers and sleepless nights. The realities of life with children can be enough to scare some into staying child-free for life by katherine low

B

rie Frazer wants it all – the perfect husband, a rewarding career, a loving family dog and the white picket fence – and a pristine, white living room untouched by messy children. “People sometimes react very negatively when I say I don’t want kids,” says Frazer, 28. “It makes me feel like I’m being selfish or that I’m cold. But really it would be selfish to have children when I don’t want to be a parent.” Frazer, a lawyer, plans to get married and live close to family, yet says she doesn’t need children to complete her life. She’s not alone. Statistics Canada reports there are more couples without children than couples with children in Canada. In the 2006 census, child-free couples accounted for 29 per cent of the population, while couples with children accounted for 28.5 per cent. This is the first time figures for couples without children have been higher. “Not as many people are having children anymore because it’s okay not to,” says Heather, who leads a chapter of No Kidding - a social networking group for those who choose to be child-free. Heather, who did not want her last name used, says she believes the number of child-free couples will continue to increase. “Women are now more comfortable remaining single

“A lot of women are now either not having kids or delaying having kids.” or marrying later. They are happy with their lifestyle as it is,” she says. No Kidding, which has more than 50 chapters internationally, provides its members with social networking as well as a support network for those who face adversity for their child-free choices. “Some believe we’re children-haters, that we’ll be lonely or unhappy in our old age. Some believe it is wrong or have religious problems with our choice not to have children,” she says. “Or they say you will change your mind. That’s like saying to someone who’s gay, ‘you just need to find the right girl and you’ll be straight.’ But I was not put on this earth to have a whole lot of babies to make my neighbour happy.” For Frazer, knowing that groups such as No Kidding exist means she feels a greater acceptance about her child-free choices. “Th is isn’t a decision I made lightly,” she says. “I really have given this a lot of thought - maybe just as much, if not more, than people who have decided to have children.” Heather says that No Kidding members choose not to have children for various reasons - they work with children but don’t want any of their own, they don’t like children, or they are concerned about global overpopulation. Others

point to work and stress. Professor Chris Higgins at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario specializes in worklife balance and co-authored Health Canada’s report, Reducing Work-life Conflict: What Works? What Doesn’t? One quarter of those surveyed in the report said they are having fewer or no children because of work stress and work-life balance problems. “More women have gone into the workplace and more are getting careeroriented and want life outside the family,” says Higgins. “A lot of women are now either not having kids or delaying having kids.” Higgins says it is encouraging that talented women are moving ahead with their careers and not succumbing to pressure to stay home and have children. “It’s not a bad choice to decide not to have kids - it’s your choice. There are days I wish I had made that choice,” he says, laughing. He’s not concerned about the future for Canada’s statistics. “China’s got a policy of one kid per family whereas India has no such policy. China is becoming a world power and India is getting more overcrowded,” he says. Higgins believes that the number of couples with children

will increase again in the future because many progressive companies now have policies where men can take time off to care for a child. Yet men may not find this option very popular until our beliefs change, he says. “It’s not the policies, it’s the social stigma attached to a man taking time off to go home and take care of the kids. That’s got to change. That will take longer to change than the policies,” he says. “But when it does change, so will the numbers.” London, Ontario teacher Kate Campbell, 33, hopes the number of couples having children will increase. “Choosing to have a child or choosing to be child-free is an extremely important decision that affects society as a whole, not just you or your partner,” she says. She thinks people sometimes only see the negative aspects of having children. “Too many people see awful kids in the mall and think, ‘God, why would I want that?’” Yet Campbell says that although she respects Frazer’s decision not to have children, she gets to see another side of kids through her interactions with them at school. “They’re young and fun and don’t take things too seriously,” she says. “Life would be boring if we were all that serious.”

horoscope

Cancer

(June 22-July 22)

You’re stuck between wanting change and wanting things the same. Be flexible and go with the flow rather than initiating change. You feel empowered when the sun enters your sign on June 21 and later a powerful new moon solar eclipse on July 1. You’re beginning a challenging but important new cycle of improvement. by chrissie blaze LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

June begins on a high note with fortunate Jupiter bringing opportunities for advancement in your career. The pace calms around June 21, bringing an ideal period for retreat or vacation. Th is peaceful theme continues with the new moon eclipse on July 1, urging you to reconnect with your spiritual self. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Change is in the air and constant distractions could cause stress. Refresh yourself with regular gym visits. Stress levels reduce around July 4 and you’ll enjoy inspiring conversations and pleasant times with friends. On July 28 your ruler, Mercury, enters Virgo, bringing an urge to give service and complete detailed tasks. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)

After a flurry of activity, you have time to dream around June 8 when Jupiter and Neptune combine. Listen to your intuition and set your sights high yet keep your plans realistic. You’re in the limelight in July; be compassionate as well as smart and you’ll impress those in authority. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 – Nov. 21)

Th is is an action-packed month bringing change and transformation. Life becomes a little complex, Scorpio style, around June 14 and you may plan some new investments or a major purchase. Be cautious and wait a few weeks. Around July 7, a reward or long-overdue acknowledgement could come your way, SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You could be feeling emotional or upset around the full moon eclipse in Sagittarius on June 15 when others don’t live up to your high ideals; remain true to yourself and things will change for the better. Around July 9 and 20, romance is in the air.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Matters of the heart are most important as the month begins and it’s good to express how you feel. If you do so with sincerity and honesty it will be helpful for all your relationships. July packs a punch, bringing added pressure to your daily routines. Breathe deeply and meditate. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)

In June you yearn for solitude but a nice aspect with the sun and Jupiter on June 25 lifts your spirits and brings renewed optimism. It’s time to work on long-term plans for your future. You feel cheerful in July and can enjoy fun-fi lled times with children or in creative pursuits. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)

Th is month is all about open communication and listening to improve relationships. On June 12, Saturn in Libra moves after a retrograde period. You’ll find that previous disagreements end and harmony prevails. In July, an opposition to Pluto brings the perfect time to de-clutter your life on all levels. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20)

As a fi xed sign, you dislike change. However, it is unavoidable now with three eclipses shaking your world – two in June and one on July 1. Go with the flow of change, loosen up and let go of difficult relationships. Jupiter is bringing you opportunities for growth and personal happiness. GEMINI (May 21-June 21)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

June is a fast-paced, busy month yet your achievements are impressive. Mid-month, the planets urge you to loosen up, so dance! Yet don’t forget the warm-up or an old back injury could fl are. Relationship intrigue is on its way in July.

A new moon solar eclipse in your sign on June 1 brings information and important decisions to make. Use your intuition as well as your intellect to solve problems wisely. Finances are most important in June; in July, planetary activity indicates you can improve your finances radically but be cautious.
