GALLERIES We have two dedicated gallery spaces for our visual art exhibitions. McKenna Gallery is located on the lower level, which is accessible by both stairs and lift. Children’s Gallery is on the ground floor level adjacent to the café space. As part of our visual arts programme we host a number of artist talks. All our visual arts events are free of charge, including the artist talks.

Riverbank Arts Centre aims to make our patrons visit as enjoyable as possible. The building is accessible via a ramp to the right of the building. Our lower levels including McKenna Gallery and Auditorium are accessible via lift.
After a long break in publication, we are delighted to return to our printed brochure this season and to present a bumper programme of visual arts, music, theatre, comedy, cinema, family events, schools’ events and workshops.
It has been a challenging couple of years for the arts and for artists. We would like to thank you for your support and for trying so many new arts experiences alongside us - including online exhibitions, immersive family music and theatre shows, zoom workshops, and live streamed theatre and music. Special thanks to all the artists and practitioners who worked closely with us to find new ways to create or present work.

MUSIC BURSARY
We are delighted to be a supporting partner of Meitheal, a new initiative by Branar: Téatar do Pháistí. Meitheal is committed to the development, creation and presentation of performing arts for young audiences across Ireland. The first wave of participating artists are Orla Clogher, Monica Muñoz, Neasa Ní Chuanaigh, Áine O’Hara, Miquel Barceló, Selma Daniel, Phillida Eves, Liam McCarthy, Mary-Lou McCarthy, Jess Rowell and Paul Curley. Devised and initiated by Branar, this is a pilot scheme funded by the Arts Council. Riverbank Arts Centre will host a masterclass and networking event for Meitheal artists in November 2022.

DAN COLLEY
We are thrilled to have theatremaker Dan Colley as artist-in-residence, developing three new works Lost Lear, The Wrens and Sugar Plum over the course of 2022/23. Following preview performances in July at Riverbank, Lost Lear will premiere at Dublin Theatre Festival in October 2022 (Photo Em Ormonde). Dan’s show, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings had a successful run at Edinburgh Fringe in August 2022, supported by Riverbank Arts Centre.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
The primary objective of the Riverbank Arts Centre Music Bursary is to provide opportunities for Kildare-based professional musicians to develop their practice and/or to create and develop new work. Following an open call in May 2022, four bursaries were offered as part of this programme – each comprising a cash bursary (€2500) and additional support-inkind (space, mentorship etc) if required. This year, as with previous years, the quality of applications was exceptionally strong. Our independent panel of assessors selected the following music artists to receive bursary awards: Jack Colleran, Megan O’Neill, Carrie Haskins and Kasia Eliasz.
OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
Riverbank Arts Centre is a member of the LIVE Network - a literary network that was established in 2018. This autumn Riverbank will deliver several literary projects including a second iteration of ‘Yours Sincerely’ - a popular initiative where a writer corresponds by letter with a small group of people from the locality, and ‘Give a Poem, Get a Poem’ - a poetry exchange project for primary schools.
Riverbank Arts Centre is the Kildare Partner of Fighting Words. We present creative writing workshops for primary and secondary schools. We are happy to say we are now presenting workshops in the venue once again (as well as Zoom workshops into classrooms). Fighting Words workshops are always free of charge to the participants.

The sense of authority bestowed by reliable objects can provide a place of solace & support in the face of uncertainty and powerlessness. Having lived through a relentless storm of anxiety and unpredictability, it stands to reason that we may be reaching out in search of stability, certitude and reassurance. In ‘Fathom’ I have endeavoured to gather and construct a personal system of measurement as filtered through an imperfect metric. Beside the Sea is an ambitious and innovative work of music theatre by composer Ian Wilson for violinist, soundtrack and found objects that explores ideas around memory, personhood and how to evoke a life and its trajectory through music. Wilson wanted to make this piece since his father died four years ago after a long battle with Alzheimer’s; the goal is a work of art which examines how much of a role memory has in making a person and what part music can also have in that.

He has been part of the fabric of the live music scene in Ireland since the 1970s and his albums continue to sell well, amongst his loyal and newfound fan base. Born in Cobh, Co. Cork into a musical family, by age 17 he was playing professionally. At 19, he moved to London, where he busked in subways, and developed his unique voice and guitar style. His earliest recordings, which were remastered and re-released in 2004, are still hugely popular among his loyal fan base.

Eighty-five year old André is a wealthy and successful art-collector, used to doing everything on his own terms. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were German authors who made it their mission to collect and publish the folklore of their native land, Germany. We have all heard some version of the stories they collected, be it Snow White or Cinderella, but the stories the brothers originally recorded are very different to the ones we are familiar with today. The original folktales were far darker, and used to scare children, teaching them valuable lessons. It’s safe to say that the original stories are a far cry from the depictions of these fairy tales nowadays, as the stories thankfully no longer scare children. Children’s Gallery Tamzen Lundy’s colourful exhibition FIBRE Felted introduces young people to the wonders and possibilities of felt making, the oldest textile making process in the world. Using 100% wool (and sometimes other natural fibres), soap and water plus rubbing, rolling and a little magic, the artist creates intriguing 2D and 3D objects and many familiar characters inspired by much-loved children’s books.

Tamzen Lundy is a textile professional of 20+ years’ experience. She has worked on all sides of retail, design and manufacturing in the fast fashion world. Over time Tamzen learnt that this was not a sustainable model, neither good for the people or the planet. She turned her back on these fast processes to return to her first love, textiles and making art a little more slowly. She works from her home in Maynooth, surrounded by fibre, up to her elbows in soap lather, dancing to the radio, chatting with the kids and whooshing the cat off the table!
The woollen textiles in FIBRE Felted are playful and experimental, the only tools required to create them are the artist’s hands. Woollen work will also biodegrade completely, returning to the earth, it is truly a sustainable art form. Come and see (and touch!) this vibrant artwork, and be astonished by the versatility of wool.

Katie Whyte is a Kildare based artist who graduated from the National College of Art and Design Dublin, completing a BFA in Fine Art Media in 2020. McKenna Gallery Free Admission Dētrīmentum is a video and photographic installation by Kildare artist Katie Whyte. A Latin word meaning harm, loss, or damage, Dētrīmentum is an exploration of the journey of an object from an intact historical/archival piece, to an object that has fallen into disrepair and out of the collective Thismemory.installation focuses on presenting hidden and lost historical narratives in photographic form. Using new media glitching techniques, the detached narrative histories of these objects are interlaced with the code of their images, producing innovative media lens-based work.

Between them, Dónal Lunny and Andy Irvine have careers that read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of popular music. Lunny has produced albums for Elvis Costello, Paul Brady, Clannad, and The Indigo Girls, and composed the soundtracks for Eat the Peach, and Teardrops. Andy Irvine is an accomplished multiinstrumentalist, singer and songwriter with several solo albums to his credit. Never Mind The Weather is a fun, engaging show about the weather and so much more. Told primarily through the use of dance and movement, the audience learns the story of two very different characters: Cyrus and Drip. Through a day in their life, we see what kind of antics they get up to, but also what lessons they learn from each other. The show is about relationships and friendship. Despite the differences between these two characters, in the end they can still find common ground.
Never Mind The Weather is a dynamic, original production for younger children (5-8 years) which travels to your school - it is an outdoor show to be performed in school playgrounds.

On the day of the famous annual fair, the town of Faldum receives an unexpected visit. A wanderer offers to grant a wish to anyone who wants one. Before long, the city is transformed. Mansions stand where mud huts once squatted, and beggars ride around in horse drawn carriages. And one man wishes to be turned into a mountain. Written and performed by former Glastonbury Poetry Slam Champion Toby Thompson, I Wish I was a Mountain uses rhyme, live music, and just a smattering of metaphysical philosophy to boldly reimagine Herman Hesse’s classic fairytale.

Upcoming Fighting Words Workshops for Primary School: Friday 30 September, 10.30am Friday 28 October, 10.30am These workshops will be conducted in our venue by an experienced Fighting Words tutor, Pierina Campbell, and supported by 2-3 volunteers from Riverbank’s Fighting Words team. The youngest of four brothers, 14-year-old Nour helps care for his mother who is in a coma. Remembering her passion for Italian Opera, Nour plays it for her, all whilst beginning to develop a passion for the music. Despite rising tensions at home, Nour dreams of escape. A chance meeting with Opera singer Sarah offers the opportunity to explore new horizons and come into his own. Delfín, an 11-year-old boy, lives alone with his father in the muddy outskirts of Buenos Aires, and dreams of playing French horn in an orchestra. His life is tough and far from charmed, but upon discovering a nearby town is forming a children’s orchestra Delfín is determined to attend the auditions. Supported by his ageing music teacher who taught him to play the French horn, and his boss in the local bakery, Delfín will do the impossible to show up for the audition. Ger Carey is back with his hilarious stand-up comedy show for transition year students. By secretly observing his subjects in their natural habitat, such as leaning on lampposts, in chippers, outside chippers, in shopping centres and sitting on any kind of steps, Ger has uncovered the weird and frightening world of the teenager! The aim of the show is to get teenagers to laugh at themselves and appreciate the differences of others.
This unique WhistleBlast performance of Mussorgsky’s wonderful symphony Pictures at an Exhibition, musically arranged by the quartet’s own Dr. Kenneth Edge, is accompanied by a multimedia video of paintings relating to each movement. An accessible performance especially created to inspire young mainstream and special-needs secondary school students and anyone to enjoy a gripping, dramatic masterpiece through live music performance and visual art.

This season cover is by Brian Fitzgerald and is part of A Way Home / An Slí Abhaile exhibition in our Children’s Gallery (see p 9). Brian Fitzgerald is an awardwinning Irish illustrator, who graduated from the National College of Art & Design, Dublin in 1983. Brian has over 30 years’ experience working with educational companies, design agencies, magazines, children book companies and more. Up to 2013, his work mainly focused on editorial and school publishing but in recent years Brian has developed as an illustrator of children’s picture books.
Since 2009, we’ve worked with numerous illustrators to bring each season to life with a unique cover. From 2009 to 2016, we worked with the wonderful Brian Coldrick, who created an exciting cover each season. In 2016, we decided to open up the illustration to other artists, as a means to showcase the talents of Irish or Irish based artists. Since then we’ve worked with Peter Donnelly, Sadie Kramer, Shona Shirley MacDonald, Fintan Taite, Holly Pereira, Dermot Flynn, Grainne Bath Enright, Anne Marie Morrin, Marta Baricikowska, Deirdre Byrne and Ann Kiernan.

The development, once complete, will provide our audience members and the broader community of Newbridge and environs with an outstanding, accessible, sustainable and inspiring new space in which to enjoy a range of arts, culture and entertainment. It will allow us to grow and expand the work that we present and produce; it will provide even more opportunities for young people, schools, community groups, and the general public to participate in arts events and activities. It will enable us to increase our range of supports and residency opportunities for artists and the creation of new work, and an expanded performance area will enable larger and more ambitious productions to take place on our stage. In 2017, Riverbank Arts Centre was awarded a substantial grant (€1m) from the Department of Arts to make major improvements to the venue and its facilities. In addition, the commitment of support from Kildare County Council, has allowed an ambitious and transformative plan for redevelopment of the arts centre. Consideration will be given to the other significant infrastructural developments that are being planned as part of the proposed Newbridge Cultural Quarter public realm projects. We will be hosting a series of information sessions throughout Autumn. As we know more, you’ll know more - and we look forward to sharing details and a first glance at the plans, as they become available. Together We Will Create:

We presented the premiere screening of THE LONSDALE PROJECT, a film by Super Paua for young people (aged 11+) exploring the life and work of world renowned scientist, Dr Kathleen Lonsdale in March 2022. Born in Newbridge, Kathleen Lonsdale (1903-1971) was a crystallographer, anti-war campaigner, writer, mother, and former inmate of Holloway Prison. We were joined by Stephen Lonsdale (Kathleen’s son), David Lonsdale (Kathleen’s grandson) and Dr Claire Murray (crystallographer) as well as the creative team.
