Whether it’s a pre-show drink or a leisurely lunch, the café at Riverbank Arts Centre has something for everybody. The café is open Monday to Saturday serving breakfast, lunch, and afternoon treats. For those attending evening performances, the café serves a range of snacks and beverages, from one hour before the performance and during the interval.

Galleries

We have two dedicated gallery spaces for our visual art exhibitions.

accessibility

The building is accessible via a ramp to the right of the building. Our lower levels including McKenna Gallery and Auditorium are accessible via lift.

McKenna Gallery is located on the lower level, which is accessible by both stairs and lift.

Both the auditorium and Box Office are equipped with hearing loop facilities.

Children’s Gallery is on the ground floor level adjacent to the café.

Hello and welcome, With the evenings closing in and routines settling back to normal, we’re looking forward to pulling on the jumpers and making some Autumn plans. With some 100+ events this season, choose from cosy cinema dates, inspiring theatre nights, comedy evenings with friends and fun-filled afternoons with families. We have a packed season ready and waiting to kick start these golden months. Exploration, adventure, the trials, tribulations and joyous experiences of the human condition are all to be explored in the shows within these pages. Blue Raincoat’s Shackleton , Aidan Dooley’s Tom Crean , Halcyon Days by Deirdre Kinehan and PJ Gallagher’s Madhouse are just some of the many highlights coming your way. For young audiences there’s an abundance of engaging encounters to be had...cool tunes with Branar’s Rockin’ Rhymes , groovy moves with A-do-le-TA! and high energy high jinks with Lords of Strut , all just the tip of the iceberg. The weather, environment and sustainability are all themes explored through exhibitions in our Children’s Gallery while adults get a chance to try their hand at making through a series of creative taster workshops this season. With so much on offer from local drama groups, youth theatre, live cinema and more, it’s all about experience, exploration and discovery this season. In May, Past Times Community Choir launched a series of videos at Riverbank Arts Centre from The Rhinestone Cowboy Sessions, which feature guest artists/collaborators, Charlie McGettigan and Sive. Past Times Community Choir is an inclusive choir that supports people living with dementia. Sing me to the sea

In July this year, Riverbank Arts Centre continued its commitment to deliver high quality arts to all, with a week-long presentation of SING ME TO THE SEA at Enable Ireland, Naas. This show is a hydropool adventure created by Anna Newell for children and young people with complex needs. The show was originally created in 2018 in partnership with Enable Ireland and St Catherineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s School funded by Wicklow County Arts Office with design funded by Riverbank Arts Centre. Recognising the need to develop more work for this audience and their families, together with powerful feedback gathered from parents and service providers, Riverbank Arts Centre will continue to work with Anna Newell to support the creation of new work in this area (see Little Tiny Xmas, page 43) . In addition, to support the development of arts practice in this area throughout Kildare, Riverbank will be working with Anna Newell to pilot an innovative professional development programme for arts practitioners interested in creating specialist work for young audiences.

Riverbank Arts Centre has a proven commitment to presenting engaging work and work of high quality to young audiences and, in the coming year, we are delighted to partner with theatre company Super Paua to support the making of new work about Dr. Kathleen Lonsdale, pioneering scientist born in Newbridge. Super Paua are an exciting company making brave theatre for young audiences. The Lonsdale Project is intended for premiere in 2020 and will be aimed at audiences 11+ (6th class to junior cycle). Super Paua will also be with us working with school audiences this season (See page 51 for details).

Fighting Words

Riverbank Arts Centre is the Kildare partner of Fighting Words. We are seeking volunteers for upcoming workshop this season - full training will be provided. Anyone who enjoys working in a creative environment with the individuals and groups – and is a good listener – is welcome to volunteer. We will be hosting workshops for local primary and secondary schools in Kildare and West Wicklow, and also beginning a Young Playwrights Programme (see page 8). An Lasairéan/The Flamingo

Fizz and Chips Theatre Company are developing a new show for children (7+) and they want your help. An Lasairéan is a bilingual show (as Gaeilge agus Béarla) telling the story of a young bird (The Flamingo) who has just moved to Ireland, through dance, music and text. This short performance on 31st August (12pm) is a “work-in-progress” and the artists want to know what you think of it Free, but booking advised. This event is supported by Kildare County Council Arts Service, Riverbank Arts Centre and Creative Ireland.

Writing For Theatre/ Young Playwrights Programme Do you want to learn how to write for the stage? Do you have a story to tell? Fighting Words are leading a playwriting programme at Riverbank Arts Centre that will support young writers to create new work for the stage. Participants will learn how to write characters and structure a duologue for the stage. The writers will receive supportive feedback on their work and will be encouraged to realise their artistic vision. The plays created during this programme will also have the opportunity to be performed on the Riverbank stage by a Youth Theatre group in 2020 and will be published in Playshare, an anthology of plays created for young people by Youth Theatre Ireland. Artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Impression

Riverbank Redevelopment On the path to achieving our vision As our plans progress for a transformative development at Riverbank Arts Centre, we are delighted to have launched the tender competition for a design team to progress to the next stage. This marks a major step on the road to achieving our vision to create a flagship cultural hub for Kildare. To date, Riverbank Arts Centre has been in a planning phase to ensure the redevelopment leads to an outstanding and sustainable venue that is futureproofed for the people of Kildare. Within the scope of this redevelopment it is intended to improve the facilities at the venue in terms of universal accessibility, staging and seats, alongside the provision of new gallery and workshop spaces. We hope to see work commence on the building in 2020, with the project expected to be completed in 2021. In the meantime, it will be business as usual at the arts centre up to Summer 2020. In 2018, Riverbank Arts Centre presented 322 events & workshops, over 90 performances by local companies, all of which were attended by over 22,000 people. This season is one of the most ambitious programmes to date, with 100+ events for audiences to enjoy. When the design team is in place, the next step for Riverbank is to host a series of information sessions and keep everyone updated how plans progress. With a growing national and international reputation for work to date, an enhanced infrastructure and expanded programme can only lead to exciting times ahead for the county. We look forward to sharing this journey with you. In 2017, Riverbank Arts Centre was awarded a grant â&#x201A;Ź1m from the Department of Arts to make major improvements to the venue and its facilities. This substantial grant, along with a commitment of support from Kildare County Council, has allowed an ambitious and transformative plan for redevelopment of the arts centre.

The Great Irish Weather Exhibition Saturday 14th September - Saturday 9th November Children’s Gallery

Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue? Or what makes a rainbow? This family friendly exhibition explores what weather is and how it happens. Get ready to learn about cold fronts and climate change, satellites and scientists, forecasting and broadcasting - and even how storms get their names. Curated by Riverbank Arts Centre, this exhibition is based on The Great Irish Weather Book by meteorologist Joanna Donnelly and illustrator Fuchsia MacAree (published by Gill Books, 2018). Joanna Donnelly is a meteorologist with Met Éireann and presents the weather bulletins on RTÉ One and RTÉ 2. She studied Applied Maths in DCU. Fuchsia MacAree is an illustrator from the border of Clare and Tipperary, now living and working in Dublin. Her work has appeared in exhibitions and publications worldwide.

Remembering the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, this photography exhibition powerfully portrays everyday situations in the GDR. Harald Hauswald images feature run-down faรงades, punks and ordinary workers, he simply wanted to document everyday life - without knowing that the Berlin Wall would one day come down. This exhibition gives a unique view into East German life using QR codes that link to short video interviews on YouTube, in which the photographer reports on how and in what context each photo was taken. H.E. Deike Potzel, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dublin, will officially open the exhibition as part of Culture Night celebrations on 20th September. The presentation of this exhibition was initiated by Newbridge/ Bad Lippspringe town twinning committee and is supported by the German Embassy.

Amazing Grace

Thursday 19th September, 8pm €6 (Early Bird) / €9 In January 1972, Aretha Franklin made her legendary album ‘Amazing Grace’ with the Southern California Community Choir in Los Angeles. At the height of her fame, she made the decision to return to where she began, to the world of gospel music. Recorded in two days, this live album was to become the most successful gospel record of all time. On it, Franklin sings songs like ‘How I Got Over’, ‘Precious Memories’ and provides an 11-minute rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’. The result is a concert film that celebrates human dignity and the longing for freedom and justice. PERFORMANCE: The Lady and the Unicorn

The Lady and the Unicorn is a playful multimedia one-woman show. Carol O’Neill shares her favourite artworks, inspired in one way or another by Celtic mythology. Over 30 artists are celebrated including medieval unicorn tapestries with hidden mysteries, mythical hare sculptures by Barry Flanagan and Dragons that inspired Andy Warhol. Monday 23rd September, 8pm €6 (Early Bird) / €9 Rafiki tells the story of two young women, Kena and Ziki, who find love despite mounting political and family pressures. Based on Monica Arac de Nyeko’s short story, which won the 2007 Caine Prize for African fiction, director Wanuri Kahiu (Pumzi) adds bold, cutting edge vision to produce one of the freshest Kenyan queer movies to date. Like its equally brilliant predecessor Stories of Our Lives, Rafiki faced a hostile response from the Kenyan government. Initially banned, international pressure and strong resistance from Kahiu herself won the day, and the film was eventually screened on home turf. Kena and Ziki face violence themselves, yet their story unfolds as an utterly contemporary affirmation for LGBTQ+ people everywhere. ‘In Transition’

‘In Transition’ is an exhibition by Transition Year students from St. Farnan’s Post Primary School, Prosperous, Co. Kildare, which took as its starting point the work of iconic photographers including Michael Kenna, Steve Mc Curry and Eliot Porter. Students conducted research and were encouraged to be inspired and influenced by these photographic styles and/or themes, techniques and imagery. Students responded by creating their own photographs, echoing and interpreting these major photographers, using only their mobile phone. The main aim when delivering this new photography course to the transition year students was to encourage and facilitate students awareness, appreciation and interpretation of the world around them, their social environment, the human race and themselves. Students developed their photography skills alongside personal, social and analytical abilities through a series of projects. Projects were structured for students to succeed, yet flexible enough to allow personal freedom of interpretation. This exhibition is a result of their learning, research and creativity. Lisa Freeman is a contemporary visual artist working across performance, video, and installation. Her new site specific performance looks at the ‘Wrens of the Curragh’; sex workers that lived in gorse bushes outside the army base in Kildare in the 19th century. Centred on a script and a live musical performance, Freeman uses the location to contextualise the past and create a discussion around women’s rights and societal attitudes towards this subject, aiming to open up new conversations around feminism and politics in Ireland today.

Tuesday 22nd October, 7pm-9pm €20 Join an award-winning artist Eleanor Swan for a two hour taster ceramics workshop. Participants will explore the possibilities of working with two different types of clay: porcelain and stoneware clay. Each participant will make a birdhouse (as seen in the photo) and a floral decorative porcelain piece. Animation Workshop for Beginners with Paper Panther Thursday 24th October, 7pm - 9pm €20

In the workshop, participants will create their own hand-drawn morphing animation through drawing on paper and photographing it frame by frame under a camera. The results will be edited offsite and uploaded to the Paper Panther vimeo page from which the participants can view and download the video. Paper Panther are an award winning animation studio based in Dublin. In addition to their commercial work and short films, they have been facilitating workshops with participants of all ages over the past ten years.

From lines on maps to drinking coffee, knowledge and power are integral to this work. The State of RoY, the first solo exhibition by Michelle McBride, explores entrenched notions of history, tradition and destruction. What is now the Republic of Yemen has had a long and changeable history. Yemen borders the entrance of ‘The Gates of Tears’, the route from the Arabian Sea, through the Red Sea and onto the Suez Canal. Beginning with the region’s tumultuous and rich history, a pivotal place in the beginnings and growth of trade through to modern warfare, the artist questions the value of commodity over life. Drawn to this part of the world by shocking headlines, this work is a journey of gaining an understanding of how these developments have affected the perception of Islam in contemporary western society. In a broader context, the act of war and homogenisation of identity which are personified in Yemen, are areas of investigation in this exhibition. Michelle McBride graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2017. She is a founding member of Kildare Art Collective and Creative Director of Kildare Yarn Bomb. The State of RoY, her first solo exhibition, is supported by Kildare County Council and Riverbank Arts Centre’s ‘Emerging Visual Artist Bursary Award’, which she was awarded in 2018.

The Faerie Tailor exhibition is a journey into tiny, magical worlds created by artist, Emily Bazeley. The artwork in this exhibition has been crafted from natural materials which have been found on forest floors, in gardens, on beaches, and also in places where you would not expect to find faerie inspiration, including city streets and car parks. There is an abundance of detail in the work - the more you look, the more you will see - prepare to be enchanted by the miniature costumes and dwellings, fashioned from feathers, pinecones, acorns, leaves, and even bugs and bones. Suitable for all ages, especially the imaginative, The Faerie Tailor exhibition will take you gently by the hand and lead you to a place of wonder, and perhaps inspire you to create your own faerie worlds. Emily Bazeley lives in West Donegal and has been creating works of art for twelve years. She has a strong ethos of only using ‘what has been finished with’, so instead of consuming to create, she gathers ‘gifts’ from nature and upcycles and recycles what is found.

In this new musical show Lyngo warmly celebrates family, friendship and the good fortune of finding the winter we really need and want... with the precious festive offering of lots of fluffy snow!

52 Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration

Since 2009, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked with numerous illustrators to bring each season to life with a unique cover. From 2009 to 2016, we worked with the wonderful Brian Coldrick, who created an exciting and different cover each season without fail - 24 illustrations in fact! In 2016 we decided to open up the illustration to other artists, as a means to showcase the talents of Irish or Irish based artists. Since then weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked with Peter Donnelly, Sadie Kramer, Shona Shirley MacDonald, Fintan Taite, Holly Pereira, Dermot Flynn, Grainne Bath Enright, Anne Marie Morrin and Marta Baricikowska This season, following an open call, we commissioned artist Deirdre Byrne to create this beautiful cover illustration. Deirdre Byrne is a visual artist and illustrator from Gorey, Co. Wexford. She makes drawings, paintings, collages and many of her illustrations have been transformed into stop motion animations. She now lives in Seville, Spain where she runs Two Birds Gallery & Studio. Deirdre studied Fine Art Painting, and Art & Design Education in NCAD. Her work has been exhibited in Ireland and internationally and was recently selected by NCAD, Dublin Airport, and Business to Arts as part of the Creative Journeys Billboard project in Dublin Airport. A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings July 2019

The Song of Pollardstown Fen was a collaboration between Riverbank Arts Centre and the Curragh Family Resource Centre as part of #WeAreThePoets, an initiative of writer Sarah Crossan, the Laureate na nÓg. The programme concluded with a reading and pop-up exhibition by the 12 children who took part, mentors Nell Regan and Grainne Bath Enright, and special guest, Sarah Crossan.

We presented the World Premiere of Collapsing Horse’s A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, a new theatre piece for all ages based on a short story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This beautiful, intricate show was developed over a year long residency at Riverbank by the company, which included workshops with Griese Youth Theatre, Kildare YT, Maynooth U3A and Naas Daycare.
