It pays for professional development for our faculty and funds a large part of the financial aid program, which this year topped $6.5 million. Riverdale students come from 95 ZIP codes in the NewYork City metropolitan area. Our diverse students bring their life experiences to bear on our dynamic campuses. Riverdale students are given the privilege of an educational experience that makes them better thinkers and ethical decision-makers, inspires commitment to both academic and co-curricular opportunities, and creates compassionate citizens who can interact effectively in our challenging but

Teachers come to—and stay at—Riverdale because they receive meaningful and unparalleled support. We spend more than $110,000 on professional development each year, allowing our faculty to attend conferences across the nation as well as to accompany our students around the globe, visiting Botswana, China, Costa Rica, France, Italy, and Spain, among

Our teachers aim to be leaders in their fields, continually challenging themselves to perfect their craft by engaging in further study, visiting other schools to learn about best practices, and sharing their great ideas regarding teaching and learning at national and regional conferences. And while our faculty members are experts in their fields, they also love spending time with children and spreading their love of learning.

We aspire to make a Riverdale education one of the most significant building blocks in a person’s life. We help students become better critical and creative thinkers. As we continually refine our educational program, our goal is to prepare students well for life by giving them the right combination of high technology and high

we created the most dynamic, challenging, and exciting educational program a school can offer

We want our students to engage fully in the life of the mind, but also to push their limits and break out of their comfort zones by trying new things. Riverdale prizes the notion that rigor and support go hand-in-hand; our students are given the support they need to challenge themselves in every arena. Riverdale’s educational program also emphasizes the importance of strong character and giving back to others. Our students are learning to become social entrepreneurs, affecting change in the Bronx, NewYork City, and even across the globe.

In the past few years, Riverdale has significantly improved its standing as one of the finest independent schools in the United States. Families and students are increasingly interested in the education we offer. Our campuses are just the right size for our 1,130 students, and we continue to improve our facilities. At the same time, we are focusing on becoming more sustainable as an institution, both in the way we utilize our physical resources and in the way we grow our endowment.

Riverdale could become one of the better-managed school environments in the country

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by 30% over the next five years, and we have worked with our investment committee and investment advisor to diversify our endowment’s investment portfolio to maximize growth and stability.

The recent cover story in The New York Times Magazine on our ongoing character development work with KIPP and the University of Pennsylvania, the “Design Thinking for Educators” Toolkit we published with IDEO, and our work on microfinance with our student group, Zawadi byYouth, are examples of educational work that has national and even global reach.

Riverdale were able to play a role in the larger debate on education in the United States

As we move forward, we continue to value what we have always done well: teaching young people to be good thinkers and communicators by providing a rich environment for students in which to develop effectively. All of this occurs while students and faculty are interacting with our many partners worldwide, expanding Riverdale’s reach and influence.

Students on both campuses consider Riverdale their second home, and we don’t take that privilege lightly. We nurture all of our students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and behavioral growth. We help our Upper School students find mentors, many of whom are Riverdale alumni. We help seniors navigate the college process through our superb college advising program.

you had a place that was a touchstone for your entire life

But Riverdale graduates never really “graduate” from Riverdale, as they continue to be an important part of the community for the rest of their lives. Many former students return to the school to support Homecoming, celebrate their reunion years, and re-engage with one another through events like Riverdale Community Action Day and our Spring Celebration. They support these events and other important initiatives such as the Zack Knight ’91 Scholarship Fund because alumni feel a strong connection to Riverdale, which remains a touchstone for them all their lives.

Reunions offer a unique opportunity for alumni to celebrate the education and relationships that continue to play such an important role in their lives. Reunion years are also an important time for giving back. The following classes celebrated a reunion during the 2010—11 school year. Riverdale is grateful for their support and especially wants to thank those volunteers who helped with reunion planning and fundraising. Reunion gift commitments include all new gifts and pledges made by classmates in the five-year period since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated. For the classes highlighted here, that period would be July 1, 2006— June 30, 2011. (The total does not include pledge payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2006.)
