Dear Friends, For the 2018–19 school year, Riverdale’s Community Engagement Team embraced the theme of connections as a way to honor the histories that bind us together and explore how those bonds can help us move toward becoming a more nurturing and inclusive school. It has prompted us to examine important questions about how to belong to a community and what it means to be a good community member. Throughout the year, we were intentional in our approach to fostering an environment that encourages dialogue, embraces differences, and serves a public purpose. This collective aim informs our work together and advances Riverdale’s mission to change our world for the good. In the words of Sandra Day O’Connor, “We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone... whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that create something.” Indeed, the Riverdale experience is formed through the investment of our teachers, the support of our parents, the engagement of our alumni, the curiosity of our students. And, each of us has a responsibility to one another and our shared affiliation to be good contributors, collaborators, and citizens. Similarly, the combined investment of all those listed in the following pages enriches the Riverdale experience and enables our school to be the best possible version of itself. I am personally grateful to all of you for your generosity during the 2018–19 school year and for helping us to forge the important connections that make Riverdale unique. Thank you. Yours,

Dominic A.A. Randolph Head of School

Riverdale’s entire community demonstrates a passion for lifelong learning and works together to foster connections that inform and shape each individual’s path. The connections our students find throughout their time on campus—be they academic, interpersonal, within themselves, or across the globe—illuminate intrinsic aspects of the self that propel them forward. Through a range of experiences, Riverdale helps students develop an understanding of themselves and one another in a way that has a powerful influence during their most formative years. Although many details of life at Riverdale have changed since its founding, our community works to ensure that we connect our past to our present, and that we continue that line into the future. At each step, educators are working to address individual student needs while ensuring that we remain innovative and flexible, adapting appropriately to our changing and increasingly global world.

CONNECTIONS OF THE MIND

02

“I’ve always felt Riverdale had two basic responsibilities: first to stretch minds; second to have each of us believe in the philosophy of ‘the other fellow first.’ Equipped with a keen mind and a generous heart, [an individual] has the best chance for personal happiness and social usefulness.”

Academic excellence is paramount at Riverdale. Educators inspire and challenge in equal measure, as they strive to teach, learn, interact, and observe. This year’s graduation speaker Kay Madati ’91, global VP and head of content partnerships at Twitter, shared a glimpse of his own experience at Riverdale nearly twenty years prior with the students and families present, noting, “When you know how to think it empowers you more than knowing what to think. This is Riverdale’s true gift. You’ve been taught how to think critically and apply it to whatever you choose.” The Lower School’s UR Learning Lab provides a foundation for this type of thinking, serving as a hub of learning, teaching, and presenting. In part, this unique space provides opportunities for students of all ages to work in robotics and programming. Drawing connections among science, mathematics, technology, and problem-solving, Lower School students experiment with all of these concepts while learning valuable skills for their future. Our grade 4 and 5 robotics project takes these concepts one step further: As students learn about natural disasters, they work in groups to build and program a vehicle that would assist in the recovery or cleanup of disaster zones. Children designed bots that could roll through uneven terrain, use mechanical features to move rubble, employ sensors to detect if someone is in need of rescue, or use pincers to pick up and move debris. “What we really want to do,” says Learning Lab Coordinator and Interdisciplinary Integrator Richard Brehl, “is prepare our students for the ever-changing world they’re entering.” By building connections with the world through practical application of activities on campus, students recognize their own agency to take action and provide assistance to others in need. Cross-disciplinary learning is a key element of a Riverdale education, becoming more integrated as students move through the divisions until it is fully realized in the Upper School program. For decades, students have been required to take Constructing America in grade 11 and Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS) in grade 12. These courses prepare Riverdale students for college-level study in addition to cultivating such life skills as how to think broadly and solve complex real-world problems. Longtime English and ILS teacher Ron Murison remarks, “Having two teachers in the room provides a rich experience that actively encourages students to think beyond disciplines, to make connections between disciplines, and to recognize that being able to do so is one of the crucial intellectual skills they will need in life after Riverdale.” As a co-taught English and history course, Constructing America weaves together American history, art, and literature to explore how historical events and experiences have impacted American culture. Not only do students have a chance to better integrate their learning, but teachers are given the opportunity to connect with each other in new ways as they shape the curriculum together, across department lines, and play off one another in class.

CONNECTING THROUGH CHARACTER

“I have learned that a good school ought to teach very well and ought to engage children in academics and other activities but that, finally, each teacher needs to understand that what is really important is the development of young people as human beings.”

Another hallmark of the Riverdale experience is a focus on the development of ethical and responsible citizens. Values such as honesty, kindness, respect, grit, and integrity encourage our students to evolve into caring, responsible critical thinkers, and make us all better collaborators in creating a productive environment for everyone on our campus. As Riverdale redoubles its efforts to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, the Community Engagement Team (CET) works to create age-appropriate opportunities for our students, faculty, and parents on both campuses to learn about one another’s identities, histories, and cultures. Director of Institutional Equity and Community Engagement Dwight Vidale ’01, P’24; former Director of River Campus Community Engagement Latoya Allen; and Lower School Director of Student Life and Community Engagement Jessica Delgado, in collaboration with faculty and student affinity groups, have created thoughtful and intentional programming for 05/07 the community to celebrate and explore a diverse range of multicultural experiences. Throughout, these events have asked our community to experience learning as both a rational and an emotional process. As Dwight notes, “Riverdale is becoming more inclusive...allowing us to dream big dreams of how we want our community to be and then giving us the opportunity to work diligently toward those goals.” Likewise, our culturally diverse programming provides ways to connect 06 with our community of alumni and friends. During Black History Month, a group of six alumni participated in a panel discussion, “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black: The Black Career Panel,” where they shared about their own experiences as Riverdale students and how those moments helped shape their identity. They also discussed what it has been like for them to transition from college to a career. On the River Campus, Playworker Alex Cote works to create a unique place for Lower School students to explore and experiment. Complex and 08 adaptable play spaces promote meaningful play by children, which also requires and supports the growth of many necessary skills, blending imagination and enjoyment with practice and learning. “Playing make-believe with open-ended materials in play areas helps students develop executive functioning skills, which are a collection of critical cognitive skills and are central to developing the ability to plan, organize, and self-regulate,” explains Alex. “One day this spring, a group of third graders created ‘Final 4’ basketball teams and made bleachers out of blocks to cheer from while other teams played. In that one small activity, students needed to employ working memory to remember scores, team names, characters, and rules; planning and organizational skills to build the block structure; emotional control to follow the rules and not get overtaken by emotion when the game didn’t go their way; and cognitive flexibility to keep up with the constantly shifting game and personalities.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH CONNECTION

09

11

“As in a team playing a crucial game or in a musical group performing in concert, there can be in a school a spirit of exhilaration in the selection of worthy purposes and the achievement of commendable results.”

12

P. GORDON STILLMAN Head of School 1972–1984

Riverdale student-athletes balance academics and community as they compete at a high level within the Ivy League. More than 80 percent of students on the Hill Campus play at least one sport in addition to the variety of offerings in physical education classes. “Sports are important because of the camaraderie,” remarks John Pizzi, director of athletics. “The kids cheer for each other, they’re happy when other Riverdale teams win. There’s a lot of pride in putting on a Falcons uniform.” Regardless of sport, studentathletes are asked to collaborate, problem-solve, and learn to work together as members of a diverse team. For more than six decades, the Riverdale swim team has been a place where students create a home within the larger school population. As a co-ed sport, the swim team emphasizes a sense of equity and inclusion that forges a unique community spirit. Not only are students of different genders practicing and competing alongside one another, but the team is comprised of a wide range of ages as well, providing the chance to build relationships where they may not have otherwise developed. “When I look back on my swim years at Riverdale, I remember the swimmers who were my friends...they were great friends then, and they’ve remained great friends since,” shares Chris Jones ’66. Jenna Wilf ’16 agrees, “That’s probably why the swim team at Riverdale has been around for so long—it’s a very hard sport, but people join because it is also fun and everyone is so supportive of one another.” Connections at Riverdale do not take place solely on campus, but also in our local and global communities. During Middle School Project Week, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders engage in real-world activities that connect them with fellow students across grades, faculty members across divisions, and often alumni or parents across industries. This year, students attended morning rounds in the Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery services at Lenox Hill Hospital, learned about artificial intelligence through experimentation and real-world application with an expert from Bell Labs, and explored a day in the life of an interior designer. These interactive endeavors give students firsthand experience with a variety of careers, broadening their networks and deepening understanding of their own interests and the possibilities available to them, all while strengthening bonds within the Middle School. Among the most immersive learning experiences are the domestic and international trips offered throughout the school year and summer. Global education, in particular, has been an essential component since Riverdale’s founding. Visiting countries across the world, such as Peru, New Zealand, South Africa, and Russia, connects our students with other cultures and offers a way to learn more than just facts. “These experiences create meaningful learning opportunities for our community,” notes Director of Global Studies Miriam Piña. “Traveling abroad or hosting international visitors on our campus allows all of us to engage firsthand with cultures other than our own and gain an understanding of the many ways in which our lives and perspectives can overlap, despite very different personal histories.”

CONNECTING MIND, CHARACTER, AND COMMUNITY

16

13

14/17

15

At the intersection of mind, character, and community is the importance of a growth mindset. Here, students and faculty alike have the ability to experiment, try, fail, and try again, receiving the support and encouragement that inspires them to learn and grow. This approach is paramount to Riverdale’s pedagogy and ensures the freedom to pursue new interests, investigate and consider new ideas, and fall in love with the ability to truly learn something new. A growth mindset cultivates the connections we draw to ideas, to ourselves, and to one another. These connections create the building blocks of confidence that allow for success in and love of learning. Together, we pursue a foundational tenet of Riverdale’s mission—to create community in order to change our world for the good—by connecting disparate elements to construct a vibrant framework that will carry Riverdale into the future. Today at Riverdale, scholarly, intimate teaching is thriving. A care for the best influences is ever present. And, abundant play in the outdoors is not only allowed, it is encouraged, even taught. Decades after the founding of our school—connecting generations of students, faculty, and administration—the vision Frank Hackett had for Riverdale is alive and well.

13

“Riverdale’s place as a leader in education is largely dependent on the decisions made and actions taken by the generations who have come before us. Frank Hackett founded Riverdale in 1907 on beliefs that remain largely intact today. We still believe in the wonderful alchemy that happens in classrooms and corridors and on stages and fields when committed teachers and mentors encourage young people and one another to think better, be better, and live together better.” DOMINIC RANDOLPH Head of School 2007–Present
