I am honored to introduce Riverdale’s annual report and would normally have coauthored this letter with Board Chair David Roberts. This year, instead, I am writing— with great pleasure—about David and his family to recognize their recent gift to the school. The Roberts Family Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships to children of military veterans and public servants. It is by far the largest commitment to financial aid that Riverdale has ever received. When David initially approached me about making a leadership gift, we discussed how it might best be used to help take Riverdale to the next level. As I talked to David and his wife, Deborah, it became clear that the Roberts family was passionate about giving back both to Riverdale and to those who defend and serve our country. Their growing excitement about what they could accomplish led the family to increase their commitment to its current extraordinary level. At Riverdale, we encourage our donors as well as our students to follow their passions because these deep connections foster more meaningful decisions and greater impact. Later in this report, you will read about gifts rooted in a wide range of interests and a common belief in our educational mission. This depth of commitment extends to all our donors and volunteers who are contributing in record numbers. Every gift, of whatever size, makes a difference. Annual Fund gifts and pledges in 2011-2012 topped $4,000,000 for the first time in our history. At the same time, our endowment continued to perform above the market average, generating returns that support a variety of programs integral to the school. There is no question that Riverdale inspires and appreciates strong family ties. This is not only reflected in the loyalty of our donors and volunteers, but also in our admission record as well. An increasing number of our students come from families with an alumni or sibling connection, and each one has earned admission in an increasingly competitive environment. I encourage you to look at the charts that illustrate our financial and academic strength and to follow the timeline that highlights just some of the many activities and successes of the 2011-2012 school year. Clearly, the effects of your generosity are evident each and every day at Riverdale.

REUNION ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLASSES CELEBRATING A REUNION IN THE 2011-12 SCHOOL YEAR Reunions offer a unique opportunity for alumni to celebrate the education and relationships that continue to play an important role in their lives. This can be demonstrated through participation in events as well as through philanthropic support. Reunion gift commitments include all new gifts and pledges made by all class members in the five-year period since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated.

16

The chart below shows the percentage of families of students in each class who made a gift to the Annual Fund between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.

The classes highlighted here celebrated a reunion during the 2011-12 school year, and the totals shown recognize giving from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2012. (Please note: The totals do not include payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2007.)
