R+ The World

Dear Friends, Thank you. As we close the books on yet another successful fiscal year at Riverdale— and the first public year of the R+ campaign—I am heartened by the immense generosity of the Riverdale community. On June 30, 2015, we finished the FY15 Annual Fund campaign with a record $4.9 million in donations—exceeding our goal and representing an increase of 11% over last year. We also marked this pivotal moment in the R+ campaign with commitments totaling nearly $57 million toward our $100 million goal. Our momentum is visible not only through the financial endorsement of our community members, but also in the expansion of educational initiatives that your financial generosity makes possible. Our commitment to a more global education is an important priority of the R+ campaign. This year’s Report of Gifts highlights some of the meaningful ways in which Riverdale connects our students with the world around them, a true embodiment of R+ the world. Globalization is fundamentally changing our world and, by extension, the educational needs of today’s students. As we adapt our educational approach to a changing world, Riverdale aims to provide students with the tools necessary to meet these challenges and at the same time to foster a more equitable global society. Thanks to the vision of Dominic Randolph, during the past several years, Riverdale has rededicated its efforts with an emphasis on service and experiential learning in both our immediate community and the greater world. From Pre-K through 12th grade, Riverdale students are encouraged to examine issues from every perspective, to explore beyond their comfort zones, to understand the lives and challenges faced by people around the globe, and to believe that each of them can be an agent of change in the world. Language studies, cross-disciplinary classes, immersive educational experiences on campus and in the city that surrounds it, as well as international learning opportunities are all critical components of a Riverdale education. Each helps shape insightful, confident, and creative global citizens who are prepared to fully embrace life in an ever-changing world. Your support fuels the curiosity, passion, and connectedness of our students and faculty. Thank you for contributing to their futures and to the future of Riverdale.

R+ The World

A Global Perspective “Today’s world is without frontiers...moving at a rapid pace, with amazing scientific developments, old boundaries and distances have vanished. Today the lives of nations, races, and peoples are bound together.”

F

rank Hackett, Riverdale’s founder and first Headmaster, wrote these words in 1947, when he was actively campaigning for the creation of a “world school” that would have brought hundreds of international students to New York. Although this ambitious plan was never fully realized, Hackett’s progressive philosophy made Riverdale a pioneer in global education. His vision still resonates in Riverdale’s current global studies mission statement: “With active language/cultural immersion, service, and study at the center of all global studies experiences, the program seeks to build an awareness and understanding of common issues facing our global community. Our goal is to empower students to be agents of change both locally and internationally.”

Riverdale’s heritage, its location in New York, and its emphasis on experiential learning and character education all contribute to helping students develop a global perspective. Hackett’s vision is continued today by current Head of School Dominic Randolph: “Our overarching goal is to encourage students to engage intellectually, broaden their perspectives, question their assumptions, and increase their sense of independence and confidence. We can accomplish much of this right on campus beginning in Kindergarten, but travel experiences are life-changing as well, because they put all these skills and lessons to the test with eye-opening intensity.”

First-hand learning all over the world “Designing each experience involves tremendous planning, as well as the support and involvement of our faculty. Some trips are focused on culture and language while others are discipline specific. All of our trips have a service component and many are primarily built around service learning, both abroad and in the United States, including New Orleans and Alabama. We often work with local partners who help us create rich and intellectually meaningful experiences,” explains Susan Polise, Director of Global Studies. “In Peru, for 8

instance, our partnership allows students to travel safely to remote villages in the Amazon to see firsthand how indigenous people are struggling with the effects of deforestation. Learning about life from a village elder is powerful.” Throughout the 2014-2015 academic year, our students engaged in a broad range of travel programs all over the U.S. and the world. Some examples: • In China, students spent time in three different schools including one in a remote province, an art-focused high school in Suzhou, and a cultural center for ancient arts. Not only did they benefit from their exposure to local language and culture, but our students also had the opportunity to teach an English language class to Chinese students. • At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, a group of Riverdale theater students produced an original play. After a semester of writing, casting, and rehearsal, the group was responsible for applying to the festival, renting a venue, promoting the play, and living, working, and performing as a festival theater troupe. For the first time this year, Middle School students spent two weeks in Christchurch, New Zealand, a city that was devastated by major earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. The trip was conceived by alumna Kaila Colbin ’91, now a community organizer in Christchurch, and Milton Sipp, Assistant Head of School and Head of the Middle School. As founder of Ministry of Awesome, Kaila is deeply involved in rebuilding the city and saw a great opportunity to engage Riverdale students in the reconstruction through a partnership with the Sumner School in Christchurch. “The Sumner School is closely aligned with Riverdale in terms of both character education and service learning. It’s a fantastic way to connect two institutions on opposite sides of the globe.”

JAPAN – At a school for traditional arts, students are given a lesson in preparing for a formal Japanese tea ceremony.

In the last 5 years, a total of 168 students, faculty, and parents have traveled to New Orleans on service trips.

Riverdale students stayed with families and worked side-by-side with their Sumner School hosts. “The trip was an amazing immersion course on personal and community resilience, city planning and politics, creative rebuilding strategies, and the role of individuals as agents of change,” says Rachel Klein, Director of Service Learning for the Hill Campus. “Our students were involved in everything from interviewing the mayor to hands-on construction of a new park.”

“The trip stays with you,” says Khalif Andre ’15. “The experience teaches you to be a better person, a better citizen, and a better student. In Botswana we volunteered at an orphanage, and everyone was inspired by meeting kids who show grit and resilience in spite of the enormous challenges they face. When we returned, our group continued to meet to see how we could help and also spoke at school-wide assemblies to inform and engage other Riverdale students.” “We see this ripple effect everywhere. Teachers comment on our students’ increased confidence, knowledge, language proficiency, personal skills, and not surprisingly, a broadening of their perspective after returning from these trips,” says Dominic Randolph. Zawadi by Youth is a Riverdale student organization that invests in microfinance loans. Since its founding in 2008, Zawadi has invested almost $55,000, of which $15,000 was contributed by Riverdale and the balance by an anonymous donor. “The first year of the program students decided, together with Dominic Randolph, to travel to India to explore the opportunities there in microfinance and global service. That on-the-ground experience really jump-started Zawadi’s success, and the students went on to obtain 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and raise funds and awareness for numerous microfinance organizations,” explains Ted Janulis ’77; P’11, ’14, ’17, who has served as an advisor since the group’s inception. “This kind of enthusiasm for civic engagement along with a tremendous sense of community between the faculty, administration, and students really sets Riverdale apart,” continues Barbara Janulis P’11, ’14, ’17.

Riverdale provides students with a deeper level of immersion through two-way exchange programs. “We have developed lasting partnerships with schools in Spain, France, New Zealand, England, Australia, and China. When we welcome students from our host schools to campus, we also add an important dimension to our global programs. Even students who have not had the chance to travel abroad have an opportunity to learn about a different culture or to practice language skills. This includes our Lower School students who are just being introduced to the concept of global citizenship,” says Susan Polise. Teacher exchanges are another aspect of Riverdale’s comprehensive approach. This year three Riverdale teachers spent time in Mumbai, India, with similar exchanges planned for the future.

A Global Perspective

FRANCE – Middle school students learn to make macarons, the quintessential French cookie, with instruction completely in French.

The new Zagat Global Scholars Fellowship will further build on our existing relationships with schools around the world. The program will recognize two international students each year as Zagat Global Scholars, while also serving to bring a teacher from an international school to campus to work alongside Riverdale faculty each semester. Tim Zagat ’57 is eager to help establish this program, explaining, “I believe strongly that the presence of international students and faculty on campus will provide a more immersive experience and will deepen cultural understanding and the meaningful exchange of ideas.”

Realizing our vision for a global school “Over the past several years, we have made huge strides in creating the kind of school that Frank Hackett envisioned. Not only have we dramatically expanded our global programs on campus and around the world, but we also have ensured that financial aid students can fully participate in these meaningful experiences. Another particularly significant measure of our progress is our increasing enrollment of international students,” says Dominic Randolph. Riverdale parent Fanglu Wang P’17, ’19 agrees, “Our daughters attended an excellent international school in Beijing before matriculating at Riverdale. We chose Riverdale because it is a rigorous school that supports its students, has respect for other cultures, and takes advantage of everything New York has to offer.” In looking to the future of global learning at Riverdale, programmatic offerings will embrace an even greater synergy between travel and coursework, including mini-courses that will help students to integrate their experiences. More interdisciplinary experiences are also on the drawing board. “I get terrific proposals from faculty members every week. Even teachers who aren’t directly involved with advising trips are actively participating in suggesting ideas, minicourse concepts, and reading materials. Like our students, they are embracing R+ the world in all its possibilities,” says Susan Polise.

CHINA – Students gather at the Oriental Pearl Tower, at the end of a Shanghai trip that included reuniting with Chinese students who had previously visited Riverdale.

REUNION ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLASSES THAT CELEBRATED A REUNION IN THE 2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR Five-year reunions offer an opportunity to celebrate the important role that their Riverdale education and friends continue to play in the lives of our alumni, and provide a special opportunity to offer enhanced philanthropic support to the school.

The alumni classes featured on the right celebrated a reunion during the 2014-15 school year. The totals shown account for any new gifts and pledges—unrestricted or restricted giving, annual, capital, or endowment giving—made by classmates in the five years since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated (i.e., July 1, 2010–June 30, 2015). Totals do not include payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2010.

CLASS OF 2015 Congratulations to the Class of 2015 for achieving 97% participation in its Senior Class Gift drive. Most of the money raised will be used to support financial aid at Riverdale. Members of the class who contributed to this effort will be listed online at www.riverdale.edu/classof2015.

We apologize for the inadvertent omission of Andrew Ravaschiere ’15 from the 2013-14 Report of Gifts. We appreciate his past support.
