ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2015–2016

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Clifford Ross ’70 stands in the surf to photograph waves during the middle of a hurricane. His dramatic, large-scale Hurricane Waves series captures the dynamic power of the ocean.

Dear Friends,

“Education should make us permanently curious— and give us the confidence to find out the answers, no matter how difficult the process. Education should produce seekers, not just students with knowledge.” CLIFFORD ROSS ’70 / Multi-media Artist

The inside cover of this year’s annual Report of Gifts features the stunning image of Riverdale alumnus Clifford Ross ’70 immersed in a roiling ocean, pictured on the front of the report, as he photographs in the midst of a hurricane. It is a striking demonstration of an artist’s drive to pursue his individual purpose and an apt metaphor for the topic of “purpose” as a whole. Indeed, Riverdale’s 2015-16 academic year was, for me, organized around the idea of identifying and seeking purpose—in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, and across the globe. The following pages illustrate this concept through the reflections of members of the Riverdale community—faculty, students, alumni, and parents—whose lives reveal a commitment to and keen sense of purpose. Finding and maintaining a sense of purpose is both exhilarating and challenging. Purpose is a driver of happy, fulfilled lives, but staying the course requires firm footing, initiative, courage, and critical character skills. At Riverdale, we are focused on giving our students all of the tools they will need to help them find and develop purpose throughout their lifetimes. Of course, this report also serves as a tribute to those of you who, as a community, continue to show your support for Riverdale’s most pressing needs as we pass the mid-point of the R+ Campaign. Your generosity is a prime example of shared purpose, as we work together to advance the school’s vision and priorities for the future. On June 30, 2016, we closed the FY16 Annual Fund campaign with over $4.9 million in donations—exceeding our goal for the year. We also marked this decisive moment in the R+ Campaign with commitments totaling almost $68 million toward our $100 million goal. I am enormously grateful for the generosity that each one of our supporters has shown to Riverdale this year. Thank you for your commitment to our school and our students.

Dominic A.A. Randolph Head of School

R+ PURPOSE

“In so many ways, Riverdale is already a purpose-driven school. We have a culture of ‘yes’ with a strong focus on community and individual character strengths.” DOMINIC A.A. RANDOLPH / Head of School

Creative problem-solving is an essential part of the Lower School experience.

“Finding your purpose has to come about organically; it has to be natural,” says Andrew Davidson ’16. An advocate for clean water, Andrew has filed for a patent on a water bottle that uses solar energy and a two-stage filter to purify water simply and economically. “I needed to come to the project myself—and then Riverdale gave me the skills and tools to problem-solve and was incredibly supportive of my work.” From social justice to the environment to the arts, Riverdale students and faculty are engaged in activities that create both personal fulfillment and a strong connection to something bigger than themselves. Liel Sterling ’17 is involved with both activism and the arts. This past year, in addition to studying opera at Manhattan School of Music, Liel was selected for Running Start’s Young Women’s Political Leadership Program. She also found time to restart an Amnesty International chapter on campus. “At Riverdale, if you are passionate about

doing something, you get tremendous faculty support,” says Liel. “You just need to be willing to reach out and then do the work.”

Setting the stage for purpose-driven lives “Riverdale actively supports doers. Everything about our culture encourages new ideas, action, and community engagement. Embracing the concept of purpose more overtly gives us the opportunity to further sharpen our focus and help lead the discussion,” says Head of School Dominic A.A. Randolph. Riverdale’s work instilling character strengths is inextricably connected to purpose. “By developing resilience, grit, and optimism during the lower and middle school years, students begin to obtain the resources they need

7

R+ PURPOSE

to discover purpose in their lives,” says Milton Sipp, Assistant Head of School and Head of Middle School. “Learning about community, team building, and leadership are all critical components.” From their earliest years at Riverdale, students are encouraged to look beyond themselves and their immediate surroundings through community-engagement opportunities. Third and fourth graders do hands-on projects such as baking dog biscuits for a local animal shelter. Fifth-grade students can join the school’s Philanthropic Roundtable, which meets regularly throughout the school year, collects contributions from the Lower School community through its “Change for Changes” initiative, and decides how to distribute the funds collected. Students nominate, evaluate, and interview various organizations to make their decisions. As Jack Peretz ’23 explains, “You don’t get rewarded, but you feel like you’ve been rewarded. It’s good to give and know that it’s not just you in the world.”

“Purpose is a reason for being. It takes root when you find work that stokes your imagination. In my case, that first happened at Riverdale.” GILLIAN CALDWELL ’84 / CEO of Global Witness

In Middle School, Riverdale continues to equip students with the tools necessary to help build confidence and demonstrate leadership, preparing them to more boldly identify and pursue their own purpose. One example is Riverdale’s LEAD program (which stands for Leadership, Empowerment, Action, Deliver and helps eighth-grade girls develop their own leadership styles and confidence): “LEAD is emblematic of something Riverdale does really well. As teachers we serve as role models and mentors to eighthgrade girls and then give those students the opportunity to mentor fourth-grade girls at our Lower School. The ability to try out new skills is enormously empowering and a critical component of a purpose-driven education,” says Rachel Klein, Director of Service Learning and faculty liaison to the LEAD program.

Students are active owners of their education Leah Moore ’16 has found her own sense of purpose through reading, a focus that has been nurtured by sharing book recommendations with faculty and friends at Riverdale. “For me, reading is not only a joy but a way to forge common ground with other people. Two people who share a love of a particular book always have something to talk about. I know that, whatever I do in my life, books will be at the center.” “There is nothing passive about a Riverdale education,” says Ricky Lapidus, Dean of Faculty. “It’s a place where students feel confident to try things out, to change the status quo, to work hard, to fail and try again—as individuals and as members of a team.”

Riverdale Middle School’s eighth-grade girls who participate in the LEAD Program learn Krav Maga self-defense techniques as one of their activities to build confidence and empowerment.

“Success can be measured by external metrics. Purpose, however, lives at one’s core and can’t be measured by others—it’s internally driven.” KATHLEEN PIKE P’16, ’16 / Director of the Global Mental Health Program at Columbia University Medical Center

Riverdale music students learn by doing and are encouraged to develop a lifetime involvement with music—whether as performers or listeners.

8

Eleventh- and twelfth-grade students take part in an urban studies trip to Detroit where they see how artists, among others, are working to revitalize the city.

R+ PURPOSE

“Like all learning, finding purpose is an active rather than passive process. Challenge your teachers. Be skeptical of easy solutions.”

Top: At Riverdale, 82% of Middle and Upper School students participate on one or more of 76 athletic teams, which strive to instill the virtues of sportsmanship, character, and commitment in every student-athlete.

PETER ELLIS ’57 / Attorney

Left: Students bring their ideas to life in the Maker Lab as they prepare for the annual Lindy 500 Kinetic Sculpture Race.

Students work together on robotics and programming projects that emphasize creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

In Riverdale's computer science courses and robotics lab, students identify and build solutions to real-world problems. Upper School students created the Looking Glass as part of Project RICK, a portal that visually unites the Lower and Upper School communities and provides an opportunity for connection. The Middle School Robotics team designed a barge to collect trash from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch as part of their involvement with the FIRST LEGO® League. Another recent innovation is Design Your Life, a pilot program for ninth graders that allows students to record their experiences—whether through videos, photographs, or written reactions to meaningful events—using an app called The Purpose Project, developed by Riverdale with the design firm IDEO. Students are then given time and space for reflection,

“When you embrace a challenge that you think you cannot overcome, it can lead to a life with deeper meaning and purpose.” DARIA ZAWADZKI P’22 / Attorney, social worker, and advocate for the blind and visually impaired

10

which provides insight into common themes and interests they might not otherwise have recognized in themselves. In a more traditional vein, Riverdale’s athletic teams model the power of collective purpose. “Riverdale does an excellent job of encouraging the majority of its students to participate in athletics—not simply to win but to learn about teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. To be part of a team is to share a common purpose,” says Steve Tisch P’18,’18, Chairman and Executive Vice President of the NFL’s New York Giants. “And that’s a life lesson that extends way beyond the playing field.”

A purpose-driven faculty has a positive ripple effect Riverdale also asks its faculty to actively influence the curriculum and to introduce new ideas and programs that can make a difference in others’ lives. A teacher’s personal sense of purpose can have a vast ripple effect within the community. “I teach because I am driven by a sense of social justice, and at Riverdale I am encouraged to bring that into my curriculum,” explains history teacher Beth Pillsbury, who was awarded a Frankel Fellowship that allowed her to research and develop an “on the ground” Detroit experience as part of her urban studies course. This spring, as a result, a group of eleventh and twelfth graders met in Detroit with people who have demonstrated their own sense of purpose and optimism about the city. 11

LEADERSHIP GIVING

Annual Report of Gifts 2015-2016

Leadership Giving We are pleased to recognize below the leadership donors who provided Riverdale with $50,000 or more in philanthropic support received between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016.ˆ

Thank You

Students participate in a mock trial organized by the Trial Advocacy Club, one of Riverdale’s many activity groups that give students a sense of agency and a dynamic outlet for their passions.

“It was an incredible opportunity,” says Nicole Beckman ’16. “We met with people who have very different perspectives on how to rebuild Detroit, including city council members, activists, urban farmers, artists, grassroots developers, and more traditional top-down real estate developers. I’m particularly interested in social justice and government—and maybe even running for office one day—so this experience was particularly inspiring.”

“Don’t be afraid of dreaming or imagining what can be. In a community, optimism and a shared sense of purpose become contagious.” JEFF VINIK ’77 / Owner, Tampa Bay Lightning and community development entrepreneur

Learning by example: How the work of alumni and parents models purpose Riverdale has a wealth of resources in the many members of our community who demonstrate purpose in their lives and work. Some of them, such as two of this year’s Class of 1957 Speakers, Peter Ellis ’57, an attorney who has spent years representing Guantanamo Bay detainees, and Clifford Ross ’70, a renowned multi-media artist, have come to campus to share their experiences with students. Others serve as mentors or inspire students through personal example.

“Finding purpose and meaning is a life-long pursuit. A Riverdale education, with its focus on character strengths, independent thinking, and experiential learning, is just the beginning,” says Dominic Randolph. “Our goal is to equip every Riverdale student to embrace the journey wherever it might lead.”

With sincere appreciation, we devote the remainder of this report to celebrating the many individuals who supported Riverdale in the past year with their gifts of philanthropic support, time, and talent.

REUNION ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLASSES THAT CELEBRATED A REUNION IN THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR Five-year reunions offer alumni a chance to celebrate the important role that their Riverdale education and friends continue to play in their lives, and provide a special opportunity to offer enhanced philanthropic support to the school.

The alumni classes featured on the right celebrated a reunion during the 2015–2016 school year. The totals shown account for any new gifts and pledges—unrestricted or restricted annual, capital, or endowment giving— made by classmates in the five years since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated (i.e., July 1, 2011–June 30, 2016). Totals do not include payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2011.
