hen the Perkins-Freeman family bestowed their beloved estate overlooking the Hudson River and the Palisades to the city of New York in 1960 they envisioned a center for environmental education where children from across the Bronx could commune with nature and learn about the challenges modern life posed for the environment, but they wanted to insure that it would continue to have a special relationship with its Riverdale neighbors. So when it opened its gates on Independence Ave. in 1965, a nonprofit corporation with local board members was established to administer it. The arrangement was a percursor to the conservancies that now run some of the city’s largest parks. Now celebrating its first half century, it has long since broadened its reach as a world class botanical garden and a center for visual and performing arts, but it remains a tranquil place to spend a summer day lolling on the lawn and enjoying the breathtaking view — all while living up to its stated mission “to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscapes, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts.” Assistant marketing director Martha Gellens points out that the estate has become popular with visitors from outside of the Bronx, as well. She has even met tourists visiting from other countries while riding the shuttle van from the Riverdale Metro North station to the gardens. “One day I was in the city for a meeting and the only other couple on

the van with me was a couple from Australia or New Zealand,” she said. “They [had] decided that the only place they were going to come to today was Wave Hill.” Nevertheless, Ms. Gellens said, there are still life-long residents in Riverdale who have not yet been to the gardens. That’s a condition which she and other staff members, like new executive director Karen Meyerhoff, are hoping to change. “You don’t discover Wave Hill by chance, you have to have an intention to come here,” Ms. Gellens said. “If we can get you through that gate, you’ll come back.” “Riverdale residents have a world class cultural and horticultural institution in their backyard, literally,” Ms. Meyerhoff added. While the public estate — which was built as a private residence in 1843 and has housed the families of Theodore Roosevelt and Mark Twain — includes everything from wide sloping lawns to more intimate, hidden gardens, outgoing director Claudia Bonn said that events like evening concerts and modern art exhibitions make Wave Hill more than just a garden. “The way it endeavors to connect people with nature is very special,” Ms. Bonn said Ms. Gellens said that unlike other botanical gardens, Wave Hill offers a unique experience where guests can sit on the grass or find a single garden with multiple types of plants and flowers. “I want you to think about New York Botanical Garden. We’re onetenth the size,” she said. “That is a garden where you can’t walk on the grass, you’re not encouraged to touch things. So we’re very fortunate that the other botanical garden in the Bronx is so different from us.” Ms. Gellens has a personal connection to the garden too – when she first started living and working in Manhattan more than 20 years ago, she would visit Wave Hill every Sunday morning to read in the flower garden and “clear her head out.” She said that when visitors come to Wave Hill to escape noise and crowds in Manhattan, they sometimes forget they are still in New York City. “When you’re walking back toward Wave Hill House and you look back and see the George Washington Bridge, it’s helpful for a lot of people

Performers, sculptors, painters and multi-media artists have all been represented over the years. A particularly popular program is the Family Art Project. Children and their parents have the opportunity to explore the gardens and make nature-inspired creations with artist and naturalist Ilse Murdock and other visitiing artists on Saturdays and Sundays from , 10 a.m to 1 p.m. at Wave Hill’s Sally & Gilbert Kerlin Learning Center. Music lovers are treated to concerts, both indoors and out. The Great Lawn hosts outdoor events during summer Sunset Wednesdays, and a richly diverse series of concerts is offered in the Armor Hall beginning each fall. Music is also a feature of occasional seasonal celebrations. The Café at Wave Hill offers visitors a wide selection of local and artisanal offerings in historic Wave Hill House, the mansion in which Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt and Artirp Toscanini lived. Enjoy sweeping views of the majestic Hudson River and Palisades as you dine or make a reservation to take afternoon tea in The Café or outside on the Kate French Terrace.

n a sunny summer Friday afternoon, the old Georgian style brick building that has served as the centerpiece of the Riverdale Neighborhood House (RNH) campus for many decades was empty, except for a few administrators and camp counselors. The scene was very different outside. The area around the swimming pool was filled with families. Kids splashed around and played games like “Marco Polo” as their parents sunbathed or swam laps. The pool was built in 1950 — long before apartment complexes with pools dotted the local landscape — with hundreds of contributions, large and small, from Riverdale neighbors. Recently, thanks to city and state funds, RNH has completely renovated the pool, and it’s still a summer magnet for families from North

Ms. Nunez said that her favorite thing about RNH is its inclusiveness of everyone who walks in. “There’s such a beautiful mix of people from all different backgrounds, all different schools, all different cultures and seeing them come together and blend as a family is what I love,” she said.

It’s a familiar spot for Caitlyn Proscia who discovered RNH at age 15 and has worked as a lifeguard there for six years. “Even though I lived in the neighborhood, I went to school in South [Riverdale]. I never knew about this place,” she said. “Everything was different, I met different people and it kind of changed where I was. Like alright, I don’t only have to hang out in South, I can have friends in North.” Now an adult, Ms. Proscia works at RNH’s teen center — which moved into the agency’s sparkling New Space last June — as a college counselor, providing academic assistance and guidance to local high school students. With a pristine basketball court upstairs and a lounge with games and colorful couches downstairs, the center can also be a place for students to just unwind or meet their friends after school, Ms. Proscia said. “For teens, there’s not really anything in the neighborhood for them to go to,” she said. “If they’re not hanging out here, they’re hanging out in the street.” The New Space isn’t just for teens, though. It is helping RNH to add or enhance programs for every age group — like Zumba and yoga for adults, added play space for pre-

schoolers and meeting areas for other local groups. “The new community center and teen center is another opportunity for the Riverdale Neighborhood House to expand its arms,” deputy director of youth services Nancy Nunez said. Ms. Nunez said that continuing to add new services will grow the budget to keep the historic settlement house — founded by a teenager in 1872 — up and running. Grace Hoadley Dodge began what was to become a lifetime of service when she noticed that the farm workers and their children at local estates had no books. She converted a shed into a lending library that eventually grew into the Riverdale Neighborhood and Library Association and then simply Neighborhood House. Ms. Nunez said that for many families, including her own, going to RNH has become a tradition that lasts for years. “My kids grew up here, so for me it is a second home,” she said. RNH has always responded to the needs of the time — making bandages for the troops during World War I, sponsoring can drives to collect metal during World War II, sponsoring forums about the area’s needs long before the existence of community boards.

uiet and calm by day, loud and hectic by night. This standard description of a nightclub actually applies to an entirely different kind of institution, The Riverdale Y. Perhaps no other location in the neighborhood sees quite the shift The Y has every day, when seniors take advantage of facilities mostly in the morning and young people roam the building in the afternoon. CEO Deann Forman said The Y’s wide demographic appeal is one of the main things that make the institution unique. “It’s one of the only places in the community where people come together with other people that aren’t all just like them,” Ms. Forman said. “It’s good.” The Y, located at 5625 Arlington Ave., has been a cornerstone of the community since 1967. Founded by Gerald Goldsmith and a group of friends, the organization has grown into a multi-purpose center with three floors. The building houses a gymnasium, a swimming pool, a fitness center, classrooms and a theater, among many other amenities. The Y can be enjoyed by becoming a member, buying a day pass, which provides full access to the facilities, or registering for classes. The institution is perhaps most

2015 - 2016 famous for its teen musical theater program, which puts on several performances throughout the year. Ms. Forman said The Y’s dance offerings are also growing, thanks to the help of professional dancers and choreographers who have offered to teach classes. A home-away-from-home vibe pervades every program. In the mornings, the center offers music, art, dance and other classes for seniors. Elizabeth Stopps, 60, has been visiting the center for four years now. At The Y, she enjoys swimming and painting. “I think it’s very important,” she said of the impact the center has on the community. “It helps young people socialize. It’s good for seniors because if they sit at home they get depressed and whatnot. And it also provides meals, activities and computer skills.” As Ms. Stopps and her fellow seniors get ready to leave in the afternoons, a swarm of children and teens fills the building for The Y’s kindergarten through fifth grade after-school program. Whether it’s learning how to swim, playing basketball at the gym, doing arts and crafts or just getting some help on their homework, the youngsters keep themselves busy at the center. “There’s just a tremendous amount happening here every day,” Ms. Forman said. “We offer something for every stage of life, from birth or even before, all the way through. So there’s always something going on.” The Y’s importance to the community helped draw state grants in the spring. A $150,000 grant went toward renovating the building, with an extra $125,000 allocated for a new playground designed for children with and without physical handicaps. Mr. Goldsmith said ongoing community involvement and renovations in the work make The Y the center he originally envisioned. “It just feels good when you see someone being happy,” Mr. Goldsmith added. “Whether they’re going to a show, whether they’re picking up their children… or whether we’re helping one of the senior citizens get into the vans to go home, it’s amazing how for such a small building, we offer so much to so many people.”

ith a mural of famous Bronxites and a classic 19th-century look, the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) exudes a sense of history. Once the doors at 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace open, the reality is that the former 50th Precinct station ouse is a warm, comforting place. “Most people say to us when they walk through the door that they have a really positive feeling,” said Lori Spector, KHCC’s chief operating officer. “You can hardly ever walk through the hallways and not see somebody — from the morning until 9 p.m.” Lori Spector and Giselle Melendez-Susca, the center’s executive director, do not consider the non-profit

organization a typical community center. It is a community center in name, but it is actually a settlement house, and as such, has much bigger responsibilities. “I’d like to see folks look at this organization as a sort of catalyst for change in the community,” Ms. Melendez-Susca says. “To support not only positive change in families and individuals, but in the community in general. That’s how I’d like us to be seen, but I think folks see us as an anchor in the community.” There is no downtime at the center, which has an extensive Head Start program in the mornings and an after-school program and teen center in the afternoons. The children get to enjoy a gymnasium, several classrooms, a computer lab, a garden and a playground. There is also a lounge where teens can mingle. The Head Start program is popular at KHCC, with parents like Dawn Payano highlighting the educational aspect of the program as its strength. Asked how KHCC has helped her daughter, she replied, “Her learning. Being able to go somewhere and learn. Not just the academic part, but being able to play with other kids.” Perhaps most unique at KHCC

spectively. Like leaders at many non-profits, Ms. Melendez-Susca and her team are in constant search of extra funds to improve their center. They received good news in 2013 when they received a $2 million grant for the creation of a new building for the Child Sex Abuse Treatment Program. The grant should help ensure KHCC’s role in the community for years to come.

Each year, members of Riverdale Senior Services participate in an exhibition of their unique artwork. are the Special Needs Program and Child Sex Abuse Treatment Program, both of which assist young people in need of psychological or emotional help. The Special Needs Program, headed by Hajnalka Gabris, is offered to children with mental disabilities. Through various activities including music therapy, gardening and physical education, among many others, the program strives to give participants a sense of belonging. Since Ms. Gabris became director of the program in 2008, she has drawn on the teen center and after-school programs for her work with children. “The kids go home happy, and that’s one of my main purposes,” she said. “To keep this place as a second home where they feel safe, where they can have fun... Usually, these are the kids that when they go home, no one is going to really knock on their door to ask them to come out and play. “So it’s very important that they have this after-school program that serves peers who have similar disabilities, where they can feel safe and comfortable and can communicate with each other... without being bullied, without being criticized.” The Child Sex Abuse Treatment Program, located in a small house next to KHCC, offers something unlike any other community center in the Bronx. It is the only one that offers psychological and emotional therapy free of charge to children who have been sexually abused. The children receive treatment once a week, most of them for a span of two years, but they are not limited to that period. Ireen Niñonuevo, director of the program, said the kids can take as long as they want to open up. As long as they do, that is all that matters, she added. “When they come here they’re in different stages,” Ms. Niñonuevo explained. “A lot of times, the children don’t want to talk about it because they’re basically mandated. They don’t want to be here. So we spend a lot of time building relationships and trust.” KHCC maintains programs like Child Sex Abuse Treatment and Special Needs thanks to government funds and individual donations, with the split at 80-20 re-

t a recent current events class at Riverdale Senior Services (RSS), the topic of Rachel Dolezal, the former NAACP president who stepped down because it was revealed she was lying about her ethnicity, was brought up. The tone of the conversation changed drastically. What was once a formal, peaceful, yet insightful conversation among a group of about a dozen seniors turned into, for about 10 seconds, a shouting fest. “One at a time!” one woman said. But her plea was to no avail, until Jerome Schwartzbaum, the only man in the class, got up and chimed in. “Let’s face it, women are gullible!” he said with a smirk on his face. A wave of laughter filled the air as the seniors departed their class, happy, informed and feeling better about themselves; a typical day at RSS, a feeling which Julia Schwartz-Leeper, executive director of the agency tries to create for members all the time. “I think that what we do for people is create a community for them,” Ms. Schwartz-Leeper says. “A place where there’s a lot of services out there for seniors and programs. But also, to create a warm environment where it can be kind of a one-stop shop and just kind of a home away from home.” RSS is a non-profit organization founded in 1974 by Julia Blumenthal and a group of local leaders. It serves roughly 3,000 members over the age of 60, who enjoy a wide range of classes, programs and activities. For many, the agency is exactly what Ms. SchwartzLeeper believes it to be: a home away from home. “It keeps me going,” Maria Scull, who has been a member at RSS for six years, says. “It keeps me having interest in things. It keeps me having interest in people. I’m a people person. It feeds me wonderful. I don’t have to worry about all that business.” The agency places a strong emphasis on the health and the wellness of the seniors, made evident with the various activities that are offered. Among the most popular are yoga, exercise and dance, but even those that do not involve physical activity, still stress wellness. “Everything we do is wellness,” Andria Cassidy, deputy director and head of health services says. “Lunch is wellness; socialization; walking; all the exercise programs; arts and crafts, which is keeping people involved and engaged. So, we look at wellness holistically. … We look at health as the whole body—mind and body.” At the top of the list of health-promoting classes is the Women’s Wellness Group, which meets every Monday at 11 a.m. to discuss issues the women of RSS face.

2015 - 2016

The idea for the class came about because of Ms. Cassidy’s tendency to never be content with what RSS offers. She is always looking for more. “I look at it as an evolving thing, Ms. Cassidy says. “I’m always asking the question of ‘what else?’

ore than 50 years ago, Riverdale Mental Health Association (RMHA) opened with a staff of three. Now, the clinic — with its headquarters tucked into an ofďŹ ce building at 5676 Riverdale Ave. — has a staff of 100 and serves thousands of clients at a time. Since 1959, it has grown to include a range of services, from substance abuse recovery to vocational programs to help people with mental health issues ďŹ nd jobs. Executive Director Robert Brewster explained that RMHA’s programs are aimed at providing personalized and accessible mental health care to a wide range of individuals. “We have people who have grown up in neighborhoods where you hear gunďŹ re on a regular basis, where getting to school can be very difďŹ cult,â€? he said. “We don’t make any judgments about that. We just try to help them move forward.

One of the most recent additions to RMHA is the Bronx chapter of the Parachute NYC program. RMHA provides an overnight crisis respite center where individuals can stay for up to two weeks. At the Parachute clinic, staff members are former mental health patients who serve as mentors to recovering guests. Other RMHA programs like group therapy can simply serve as social outlets for clients to heal by talking and sharing weekly dinners with other members of their specialized support groups, Mr. Brewster said. “If you were a y on the wall, you wouldn’t think mental health clinical work,â€? he added. “You would think these are people who draw support from each other.â€? While RMHA’s mission is to keep mental health care affordable and accessible, Mr. Brewster and director of development Emily Ross said that increased funding can help the clinic better meet its clients’ needs and expand its services. “Mental health in general is underfunded,â€? Ms. Ross said. “Every time there’s a big incident, there’s a number of editorials and there’s a big outcry, but it’s very hard to get that money.â€? Mr. Brewster added that funding secured by local elected ofďŹ cials has helped RMHA’s clients receive care “seamlesslyâ€? and without having to worry about ďŹ nancial issues. Mr. Brewster and Ms. Ross hope to increase the clinic’s visibility in Riverdale, with events like sponsored 5k races. “We are very embedded in the community,â€? Mr. Brewster said. “We don’t want to be here behind walls; we want to be out there where people can access our services.â€?
