WELCOME HOME The word “lobby” has a very different meaning for the apartment dwellers of Riverdale than it does for the denizens of K Street in Washington, D.C. or State Street in Albany. Photo editor Adrian Fussell took a random sampling of the spaces — both inside and out — that are the first things we see when we arrive. Some are sleek and modern, others are practically medieval, but most speak of the comfort and luxury to be found inside each apartment in their buildings. More on home design on pages B14-15.

Tall arched windows facing the Hudson River are the hallmark of Palisade Avenue’s last riverfront building, La Rive. Like Villa Charlotte Brontë, the Greystone Manor, opposite Fieldston Lower School on Greystone Avenue, has no grand interior lobby. Instead, the doorman’s booth stands like a picturesque folly at the top of the entrance stairs.
Villa Charlotte Brontë, on Palisade Avenue, has no interior lobby. Instead, a complex series of planted terraces and swooping stairways add romance to its appearance. Highpoint, at 2727 Palisade Ave., is a mid-century modern gem, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing a courtyard to the south.
A Tudor-style building deserves a Tudor-style lobby, and that’s just what 3875 Waldo Ave. gets, complete with stone mantlepiece, terra cotta floor tiles, paneled walls and decorative plasterwork on the ceiling.
Hayden-on-Hudson, photo at right, sits amid nine acres of landscaped park. Nevertheless, lush greenery in the lobby greets every visitor.
