RiverFest! Riverdale’s annual paean to the Hudson River went off without a hitch on Sunday, despite threatening weather reports that held down the crowds a bit, compared to previous years. Those who did attend were treated to jesters, jousters and gentle reminders from environmental groups to care for our natural heritage and support the development of the Hudson River Greenway. Three stately ships offered visitors the chance to get up close and personal with the river and kids were treated to pony

rides, American Indian crafts demonstrations, face painting and mask making — they even had the chance to make traditional newspaper pressman’s hats. The air was filled with music throughout the day, beginning with bagpiping, followed by the Riverdale Y’s youngest children’s theater group — who showed they knew their Sondheim — and folk and rock bands. Lines formed early for tasty treats ranging from Indian vegan fare to kosher cold cuts and cotton candy. CAPTAIN MATT PERRICONE, of the tugboat Cornell, photo above, watches and waits for the The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater to enter the dock. ARTIST DANIEL HAUBEN didn’t quite get to finish his oil pastel rendering of the event on the campus of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. He plans to go back and fill in a few details. IS CHIVALRY DEAD? Not here, say knights in shining armor Zorikh LeQuidre as ‘ Lord Ervald’ and Landon Morris as ‘Agrippa’ in photo below. Their Society for Creative Anachronism demonstrated heavy armor combat, perhaps to win the affection of a fair maiden or two.
