Houses like this one put the ‘estate’ in Estate Area
R
iverdale’s first landmark district — an area west of the Henr y Hudson Parkway realtors refer to as the Estate Area — was the creation of a consortium of pre-Civil War Manhattan tycoons who established a posh vacation community along the Hudson. They were the first to call the high bluff where they built their mansions “Riverdale,” and the name and their development were an instant hit. Captains of industry outdid one another with stately homes, outbuildings and carriage houses. In the 1930s, when the founding families began to subdivide their properties, they found willing buyers eager to enjoy the trees, rock outcroppings and views of the Palisades that the area afforded. The house at 5253 Sycamore Ave. was built as a carriage house on the Stonehurst estate and it shares many of its rich architectural details, including a chiseled stone exterior with deep set arched windows and delicately proportioned
dormers. According to the New York City Landmarks Commission, it was converted for its current use in 1937 by Julius Gregory, a distinguished architect who built several of Fieldston’s finest homes. More recently, its current owners gave it a thorough and sensitive renovation under the watchful eye of the Landmarks Commission. The high ceilinged house has five bedrooms, two with ensuite baths, five-and-a-half bathrooms, maid’s quarters, a wine cellar, a circular solarium, a two-car garage, central air conditioning and two working fireplaces. The large eat-in kitchen has a Viking stove and Sub-Zero refrigerator, the oversized formal dining room is surrounded with windows, the patio and large yard are secluded and set in beautifully landscaped grounds ringed with mature trees. Ellen Moskof of Halstead Property has listed, the property at $3,950,000. Annual real estate taxes are $17,750.
The master bedroom, right, is nestled on the top floor with dormers, window seats and built-in storage cabinets adding lots of character.
