T
he New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show is back. In its 21st year, the popular train show features large-scale model trains and replicas of New York City landmarks made with natural materials including bark, twigs and fruit. Trains run on a quarter-mile of track in the garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the nation’s largest Victorian glasshouse. Through January 13, attendees can see 19th Century steamers chug through the conservatory, near miniature city landmarks including the original Penn Station, the flagship Macy’s store, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Brooklyn Bridge. The show features nearly 140 structures, designed by Paul Busse. Here are some of the events taking place at the train show: • Children can explore the plant ingredients that make up a classic gingerbread recipe and crawl through a child-sized gingerbread playhouse at Gingerbread Adventures. Check times at www.nybg.org. • Attendees can get a behind the scenes look at the creation of the train show, which will be screened in a PBS documentary on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sunday, Dec. 30, at 11:30 a.m., 1, 2 and 3 p.m. • Puppet master Ralph Lee will present The Little Engine That Could puppet show Tuesdays through Thursdays through Thursday, Dec. 27 and Mondays, Dec. 17 and 31. Check times at www.nybg.org. • The train show will be open at night, Saturdays, Dec. 8, 15 and 22, from 7 to 9 p.m., for Bar Car Nights. Advance tickets are recommended and are available at www.nybg.org. • In January, Thomas the Tank Engine will come to New York Botanical Garden with All Aboard with Thomas & Friends, a sing-along show for children. Thomas will be available to pose for photos as well. Prices for the train show differ depending on weekdays and weekends. The show costs between $20 and $25 for adults; $18 and $22 for students and seniors; $10 and $15 for children. For a complete list of prices and times, go to www.nybg.org.
