TRANSFORM YOUR MIDWEEK MEALS WITH
Basilico Pasta Sauce
Looking for a midweek pick-me-up? Put down that phone and avoid the take-away apps — why not try a tasty pasta dish instead? Native to Italy but now enjoyed all over the world, pasta served with basilico pasta sauce is not only delicious but is far better for your waistline than greasy fast food.
WHAT IS BASILICO? A basilico pasta sauce is a fairly simple concoction, the main two ingredients being tomatoes and — you guessed it — basil. To this mix, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper are usually added.
Basilico sauce is a classic Italian product that pairs well with most types of pasta, be it spaghetti or penne. It can be enjoyed as a simple dish or dressed up with additional ingredients for some extra nutrition and zest.
FAST PASTA FACTS Many people express concern about the nutritional content of pasta, particularly those who are trying to keep track of their carbohydrate intake. However, as is the case with most food groups, pasta eaten in moderation is perfectly healthy and an excellent source of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
When selecting pasta, opt for wholemeal options. Wholemeal pasta offers a greater concentration of fibre and protein than regular varieties. On top of selecting the right type of pasta, be sure to cook an appropriate amount. Many people unconsciously eat several servings of pasta at a time, because it’s just so delicious!
And coeliacs, never fear. These days, there are a wide range of gluten free pastas available meaning those who have a wheat allergy or are gluten intolerant can enjoy this classic Italian dish. Gluten free pasta tends to be made of a combination of non-gluten grains, including corn, millet, buckwheat, and quinoa.
