Jingle all the way to Christmas Day in Wagga Wagga The 2022 Wagga Wagga Christmas program will have you jingling all the way to Christmas Day. Celebrate the festive season with largescale light installations and decorations
throughout the city and catch the travelling Christmas trail featuring Santa and Mrs Claus – stopping by a number of Wagga Wagga suburbs and a rural village next week. Events Officer Emma Corbett said Council’s online gift guide and jolly Christmas video will give residents lots of inspiration to shop local for gifts and tasty trimmings for the Christmas table. “Council is very excited to be showcasing
what there is on offer across the city this Christmas and how the community can get involved to support local businesses and community initiatives this year,” Ms Corbett said. The festive Christmas trail will take place across four afternoons from 4pm to 5pm on Monday 5 to Thursday 8 December. Santa and Mrs Claus will make their way to suburban locations and villages across the Local Government Area including Gobbagombalin, Turvey Park, Tolland and Tarcutta. Each location will have free festive activities for everyone to enjoy, including performances by local choir groups, ornament decorating workshops and garden games. Christmas light installations and decorations have now been installed in Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets, the Civic Centre forecourt, and Victory Memorial Gardens. The decorations are on public display until Monday 9 January 2023 and include a new illuminated Santa and elf interactive lighting display under the lit-up cypress pine tree in the Victory Memorial Gardens and a stunning trio of stars installed in the Civic Centre forecourt. The multimillion dollar Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub, a core feature of the Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct, officially opened this week and is set to increase freight capacity and economic growth for the region. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads The Hon Sam Farraway and Visy Logistics Country Manager Mr Lee Schmelich officially declared the rail and road facility open on Thursday (1 December). The RiFL Hub includes a 4.6 kilometre rail master siding connecting to the main southern railway, funded by the NSW Government Fixing Country Rail program, and the intermodal terminal, co-funded by Wagga Wagga City Council and Visy Logistics. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said the successful delivery of the large-scale project was a testament to the hard work of all the teams involved. “Around 130 jobs were supported during construction of the RiFL Hub,” Cr Tout said. “The benefits of the RiFL Hub flow to the Wagga Wagga LGA, the region as a whole, and in fact southern NSW. It will prove a catalyst for freight movements and is a once in a generation opportunity.” Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said RiFL is positioned to become a dynamic operations centre for freight operators. “The 4.6 kilometre rail siding will be a game changer for the rail freight industry, allowing for longer trains with the capacity to securely load and unload without holding up other services,” Mr Farraway said. “These trains can carry loads the equivalent of 134 semi-trailer trucks, reducing the number of rigs on Riverina roads and allowing freight to move efficiently across the state. “The $14.4 million siding is also connected to the ARTC loop line, providing rail freight operators the flexibility to send trains from the region north to Sydney or south to Melbourne.” Visy Logistics will carry out operations at the RiFL Hub as an open access terminal and provide logistics solutions and services to businesses across the Riverina. The completed RiFL Hub project, including the Bomen Enterprise Area – services and subdivision, has been funded by the NSW Government through the Fixing Country Rail program and Growing Local Economies fund, Wagga Wagga City Council and Visy Logistics.

Get into the spirit of giving through our Library’s Community Food Appeal Wagga Wagga City Library’s annual Community Food Appeal is on again this year with residents encouraged to donate non-perishable and longlife food items. Community members showed their generosity in 2021 donating bags filled to the brim with non-perishable food items that were distributed to help local people in need. Manager Library Services Christine Bolton said even before this year’s appeal was officially launched, the donations were already coming in. “We have such generous residents living across our suburbs and rural villages who really want to show their support for those who need a helping hand in our community,” Ms Bolton said. Goods donated will be handed to The Salvation Army in the new year for distribution in the community. The library is requesting the donation of non-perishable items which are well within their use-by dates. The Community Food Appeal runs until 15 January 2023. Donation ideas • Tinned goods such as fruit, baked beans, tomatoes, corn, beetroot. • Canned meats such as salmon, tuna or chicken. • Rice, pasta, pasta sauce and noodles. • UHT milk, powdered milk, tea, coffee, milo, sugar. • Juices and juice poppers. • Spreads such as Vegemite. • Breakfast cereals, biscuits and crackers. • Gravy mix, salt, pepper, stock, flour, and spices.

LIFESAVING SKILLS: Due to the recent flooding of the Murrumbidgee River, children taking part in Outback Lifesavers 2023 will learn how to stay safe around water, particularly inland waterways, from the safety of the Oasis Aquatic Centre.
Register now for Outback Lifesavers Young community members keen to learn more about water safety and lifesaving skills can now register for the Outback Lifesaver program set to start in Wagga Wagga in January next year. It is the third year in a row Wagga Wagga City Council and Royal Life Saving NSW have joined forces to conduct the program, which will be held at the Oasis Aquatic Centre over eight days from 16–25 January 2023. The initiative is open to young people aged U8 - U13, providing an opportunity for them to develop their lifesaving skills and understanding of safety around water, particularly inland waterways. Oasis Aquatics Supervisor Taileigh King said sessions would be held at the Oasis due to recent flooding events along the Murrumbidgee River. “It’s the perfect opportunity for kids to learn their survival and rescue skills and what to look for before they get in the water in a controlled environment which they can then apply when they’re at our inland waterways,” Ms King said. The 2023 program has been condensed into one-hour sessions over eight weekdays. The sessions will run from 9am to 10am, with week one from Monday to Friday, 16–20 January and week two from Monday to Wednesday, 23–25 January 2023. The Civic Theatre launched its 2023 Season this week with a familyfriendly party to celebrate the addition of kids and family shows to the subscription season in its 60th year. Local audiences can look forward to a program of the highest standard to excite loyal theatre goers and entice new fans with many non-traditional performances on offer. “2023 is all about celebration,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said. “We will celebrate our 60th anniversary and our wonderful community by looking to the future. We have mixed things up a little with our programming to encourage young people and families into our spaces.” 2023 will see ‘Kids + Family’ shows eligible for inclusion in theatre subscriptions. “Adding family shows to the subscription season line-up means that the benefits of becoming a subscriber are now available to a much wider audience,” Ms Campbell said. The 2023 Season is now on sale as part of a subscription package in an exclusive pre-sale for subscribers. Show tickets will be open to the general public from 12 December.
