Lighting the way! Local sporting facilities to benefit from State Government grants Wagga Wagga City Council has welcomed the announcement of more than one million dollars for three major sporting facilities in the city, under Round Five of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole joined Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor
Dallas Tout to announce the funding on Wednesday 4 January. “We are investing record amounts to deliver the infrastructure needed to stimulate economies, but we’re also backing grassroots projects that make a positive difference to local sports clubs, local communities and surrounding areas,” Mr Toole said. The allocation for Council includes $587,967 for lighting improvements as part of the Bill Jacob Athletics Centre upgrade project at Jubilee Park and $429,208 for new shot clocks and scoreboards at Bolton Park Stadium along with new portable seating made up of 446 seats to be used at the MultiPurpose Stadium at Equex.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said the grants will be greatly beneficial to local sportspeople in the Wagga Wagga and surrounding region. “Grants such as the Stronger Country Communities Fund support athletes in regional centres, allowing them to stay and train locally, while they prepare to compete nationally,” Cr Tout said. “The combination of the funding announced today is all about partnerships and networks and multiplying funding, enabling us to improve the infrastructure and facilities. “The additional seating for our MultiPurpose Stadium (MPS) will assist Council to host larger indoor stadium events, resulting in huge economic and social benefit to the region.” Sam Gray from Wagga Futsal said the additional seating at the Equex MPS is good news for local players and will allow the club to attract a Capital Futsal competition to the city. “Futsal’s growing constantly,” Mr Gray said. “We are just custodians of the sport so for us to provide ongoing support to the next generation, we need that backing from Council and the State Government and we’re getting that at the moment. “It’s fantastic. Some may say it’s just seating, but without seating we can’t get people in to watch the games.” More on page 2

The new year commenced in Wagga Wagga with a fantastic display of fireworks over Lake Albert, setting the tone for a big list of exciting events set to spark interest throughout 2023. From small events to large festivals, there will be plenty happening across our city and surrounding region for locals and visitors alike. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Destination & Events Coordinator Kimberly Parker said 2023 is promising to be bigger and brighter than last year as the city continues to welcome more events and visitors to the city. “In 2023 we will have a vibrant calendar of events and festivals throughout the year,” Ms Parker said. “We are looking forward to welcoming new and returning major events across the city, including the Wagga Wagga Mardi Gras, Gears and Beers, the NRL game between the Canberra Raiders and Redcliffe Dolphins, Wagga Gold Cup Carnival, Wagga Wagga’s favourite winter festival; Festival of W, Spring Jam kids festival, and FUSION Botanical, just to name a few. “These events held throughout the year will draw visitors from the surrounding region and further afield, which will have a flow on benefit to the Wagga Wagga economy.” More than 600 events are held in the city each year ranging from small boutique markets to major destination events, with some events attracting crowds of 10,000 attendees. To assist in promoting these events and to provide handy information for locals and visitors, Council produces a guide each season. The guides are a great tool to keep on hand when planning your days and weekends ahead. “In the latest Summer What’s On Guide you will find plenty of workshops and classes for both kids and adults, a brilliant series of exhibitions at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and Museum of the Riverina, and a range of summer markets for all to enjoy,” Ms Parker said. “Later this month will be the Australia Day Awards ceremony on Wednesday 25 January, followed by the Australia Day free community breakfast and event on Thursday 26 January in the Victory Memorial Gardens “In February we will also welcome thousands of families for the NSW Touch Association’s Junior State Cup Southern Conference carnival at Jubilee Park, so our city will certainly be buzzing.” To discover more about what’s on this season, grab a copy of the latest Summer What’s On Guide.
