Lighting the way! Local sporting facilities to benefit from State Government grants Wagga Wagga City Council has welcomed the announcement of more than one million dollars for three major sporting facilities in the city, under Round Five of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole joined Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor
Dallas Tout to announce the funding on Wednesday 4 January. “We are investing record amounts to deliver the infrastructure needed to stimulate economies, but we’re also backing grassroots projects that make a positive difference to local sports clubs, local communities and surrounding areas,” Mr Toole said. The allocation for Council includes $587,967 for lighting improvements as part of the Bill Jacob Athletics Centre upgrade project at Jubilee Park and $429,208 for new shot clocks and scoreboards at Bolton Park Stadium along with new portable seating made up of 446 seats to be used at the MultiPurpose Stadium at Equex.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said the grants will be greatly beneficial to local sportspeople in the Wagga Wagga and surrounding region. “Grants such as the Stronger Country Communities Fund support athletes in regional centres, allowing them to stay and train locally, while they prepare to compete nationally,” Cr Tout said. “The combination of the funding announced today is all about partnerships and networks and multiplying funding, enabling us to improve the infrastructure and facilities. “The additional seating for our MultiPurpose Stadium (MPS) will assist Council to host larger indoor stadium events, resulting in huge economic and social benefit to the region.” Sam Gray from Wagga Futsal said the additional seating at the Equex MPS is good news for local players and will allow the club to attract a Capital Futsal competition to the city. “Futsal’s growing constantly,” Mr Gray said. “We are just custodians of the sport so for us to provide ongoing support to the next generation, we need that backing from Council and the State Government and we’re getting that at the moment. “It’s fantastic. Some may say it’s just seating, but without seating we can’t get people in to watch the games.” More on page 2

The new year commenced in Wagga Wagga with a fantastic display of fireworks over Lake Albert, setting the tone for a big list of exciting events set to spark interest throughout 2023. From small events to large festivals, there will be plenty happening across our city and surrounding region for locals and visitors alike. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Destination & Events Coordinator Kimberly Parker said 2023 is promising to be bigger and brighter than last year as the city continues to welcome more events and visitors to the city. “In 2023 we will have a vibrant calendar of events and festivals throughout the year,” Ms Parker said. “We are looking forward to welcoming new and returning major events across the city, including the Wagga Wagga Mardi Gras, Gears and Beers, the NRL game between the Canberra Raiders and Redcliffe Dolphins, Wagga Gold Cup Carnival, Wagga Wagga’s favourite winter festival; Festival of W, Spring Jam kids festival, and FUSION Botanical, just to name a few. “These events held throughout the year will draw visitors from the surrounding region and further afield, which will have a flow on benefit to the Wagga Wagga economy.” More than 600 events are held in the city each year ranging from small boutique markets to major destination events, with some events attracting crowds of 10,000 attendees. To assist in promoting these events and to provide handy information for locals and visitors, Council produces a guide each season. The guides are a great tool to keep on hand when planning your days and weekends ahead. “In the latest Summer What’s On Guide you will find plenty of workshops and classes for both kids and adults, a brilliant series of exhibitions at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and Museum of the Riverina, and a range of summer markets for all to enjoy,” Ms Parker said. “Later this month will be the Australia Day Awards ceremony on Wednesday 25 January, followed by the Australia Day free community breakfast and event on Thursday 26 January in the Victory Memorial Gardens “In February we will also welcome thousands of families for the NSW Touch Association’s Junior State Cup Southern Conference carnival at Jubilee Park, so our city will certainly be buzzing.” To discover more about what’s on this season, grab a copy of the latest Summer What’s On Guide. Music mentoring program for local talent to return to the city Following a successful first visit in April last year, a State-wide music industry mentoring program is again setting its sights on emerging talent in Wagga Wagga, with a songwriting intensive next week. The SongMakers Holiday Sessions are presented by national music organisation APRA AMCOS as part of the Office for Regional Youth Holiday Break program, in partnership with Create NSW. The sessions are being held at the Civic Theatre on 10 – 11 January, with free places being provided to locals aged between 16 - 21 to participate. They will spend two days writing and recording songs and learning about music careers with inspiring Australian professionals. Visiting mentors include platinum producer/artist and triple j favourite, Taka Perry, Sydney producer/ songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chelsea Warner, and ARIA-award winning Katie Wighton (All Our Exes). SongMakers Project Lead, APRA AMCOS, Tina Broad said “we have selected Wagga as one of the return locations for the program because we were just blown away by the standard of writing and playing at the last workshop. “We can’t wait to return to work again with the budding musos of the area and keep the connections going as we match them with new mentors.” Civic Theatre Manager Isobel MacCallum said the theatre is delighted to welcome SongMakers' return. “The previous workshop was a very special two days; the focus and commitment by the young people who participated, and the mentors, was palpable,” Ms. MacCallum said. “It’s a vindication of the emergence of a strong music scene here. I can’t wait to hear the recordings from the next group of emerging writers and performers.” The sessions run from 10am – 4pm on Tuesday 10 January and 10am – 5pm on Wednesday 11 January.

STILL TIME: Acting Library Services Manager Michael Scutti has praised the community for their generosity in giving to the Library’s Community Food Appeal, which runs until Sunday 15 January.
Still time to donate to Library’s Community Food Appeal Wagga Wagga City Library thanks community members for their support of the annual Community Food Appeal and is reminding residents they still have another week to donate non-perishable and long-life food items. The Community Food Appeal helps local families who are experiencing financial difficulties and struggling to cover holiday season and back-toschool expenses. Acting Library Services Manager Michael Scutti praised the generosity shown by residents living across our suburbs and rural villages since the Community Food Appeal was launched at the start of December last year. “Quite a few our regular library users have been bringing a donation with them on each visit, while other people have made a special trip to the library to drop off items,” Mr Scutti said. “The City Library’s Agile Library service team has also been collecting donations of non-perishable food items during their visits to our suburbs and rural villages. “It’s another benefit of our Agile Library service visiting so many suburban venues across the city and rural villages across the wider Local Government Area; the library can help bring the community together to support each other.” To see when the Agile Library service is next visiting your location, check the schedule at waggalibrary.com.au/ agilelibrary The Community Food Appeal runs until Sunday 15 January, with all goods donated to be handed to The Salvation Army for distribution in the community.

Be inspired and sign up for Summer Art Camp at the Art Gallery Get ready for four days full of fun and exciting art workshops, as Art Camp returns to the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery from Tuesday to Friday next week. A range of workshops are on offer for children, teenagers and families who are keen to explore their artistic potential. Gallery Curator - Learning & Engagement Linda Elliott said this is the third year the Art Camp program is being presented at the gallery in the summer school holidays. “It’s a great way to kick start the new year as it’s such an exciting program for the team and presenters to deliver,” Ms Elliott said. “We have a range of activities on offer, from art workshops or learning how to create your own zine, to a week full of dance and movement.” The gallery’s current exhibition, the Sci-Fi inspired world of virtual reality (VR) exhibition Terminus, will be used for inspiration in the art workshop for teenagers as they create their own perspective drawing using augmented reality (AR). Wiradjuri Elders and community will share their stories in mayinyguwalgu ngunggirridyu about the big fish, frogs and goannas to inspire the creation of participants’ own creatures using raffia, sticks and wool, while contemporary dancer Ella Havelka will deliver daily workshops on dance and movement and rhythmic games using Wiradjuri language. In their zine workshops, Halfway Print Fest Directors Kate Allman and Adele Packer will support and inspire students to make their own zine. “The activities are designed to give participants, from children and teenagers to the whole family, the chance to get some hands-on skills building, while having a lot of fun,” Ms Elliott said. Sporting groups welcome funding for upgrades Wagga Wagga Little Athletics Club Treasurer Bob Hay welcomed the allocation for lighting at the Bill Jacob Athletics Centre. It adds to the $2.74 million for the main upgrade project announced last year in Round One of the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund. “The addition of lights will allow athletes to continue training through the winter months while providing flexibility in scheduling events,” Mr Hay said. “In addition to the upcoming works to upgrade the track to a synthetic surface, this grant will enable local athletes to stay and train in Wagga Wagga in an excellent facility.”
