SHARE YOUR IDEAS: Council set to hold community drop-in sessions to inform the development of the Wagga Wagga Community Net Zero Emissions Roadmap.

Have your say: Council's Community Net Zero Emissions Roadmap Council is consulting with the community to inform the development of the Wagga Wagga Community Net Zero Emissions Roadmap. The roadmap is a high-level document that will guide the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area toward net zero, encouraging climate-friendly actions and benchmarking community progress.

Earlier this year at its Ordinary Meeting on 11 April 2022, Council resolved to endorse an interim community net zero emissions target of a 50 per cent reduction in community emissions by 2030, compared to 2050, and develop a roadmap that outlines Council’s role in the community achieving both the 2030 and 2050 net zero emission targets. To assist in achieving this target, Council is consulting with the community, business groups and NSW Government agencies to discuss approaches. Net Zero Emissions Project Officer Benjamin Holt said all levels of government, businesses and the

community have a pivotal role to play in achieving this target. “Council held an initial forum with the NSW Government and business and community groups earlier this month,” Mr Holt said. “Our next step is to consult with the wider community, as collaborative approaches and idea sharing with a wide range of stakeholders are necessary to build a well-informed roadmap.” Council will start the series of community drop-in sessions with two introductory 30-minute sessions on Thursday 15 December at 11.30am and 5.30pm. These introductory sessions aim to give an overview of what the roadmap needs to achieve, the process Council will follow to create it, and how it will monitor progress against it. “Additional drop-in sessions will begin in the Wagga Wagga City Library meeting room every Wednesday in January from 4pm – 6pm," Mr Holt said. “Council is also encouraging residents to have their say by completing an online survey which will open on Connect Wagga on Tuesday 13 December.” The open community sessions are an opportunity for people to share their ideas with other community members and Council Staff in a safe space that fosters mutual understanding, respect and growth.

Wagga Wagga City Library’s Agile Library service is collecting donations of non-perishable food items for the library’s Community Food Appeal. The Community Food Appeal helps local families who are experiencing financial difficulties and struggling to cover holiday season and back-toschool expenses. The appeal is on now, and will run until 15 January 2023, with all donations delivered via a local charity to families in need. Library Services Manager Christine Bolton said the team was pleased to be giving the entire community the opportunity to donate to the food appeal. “Usually, people would need to bring their donations to the library in person, so we’re particularly excited that residents can drop off their nonperishable items to our Agile Library officers on their regular rounds, knowing those items will make their way into the hands of people in need,” Ms Bolton said. “It’s another benefit of our Agile Library service visiting so many suburban venues across the city and rural villages across the wider Local Government Area; we can help bring the community together to support each other.” The Agile Library service will accept non-perishable food items that are well within their use-by dates. Household staple items are always welcome, including donations of rice and flour, canned goods, baby formula, long-life milk, and lunchbox items. To see when the Agile Library service is next visiting your location, check the schedule at waggalibrary.com.au/ agilelibrary The Agile Library service will be running up until Friday 23 December, resuming on Tuesday 3 January. The Wagga Wagga City Library will be closed from 24 December 2022, reopening on Tuesday 3 January 2023. During the shutdown period, the eLibrary service will continue to provide 24/7 access to a vast array of digital books, magazines and audiobooks. “Access to our eLibrary is free; all you need is your Wagga Wagga City Library card,” Ms Bolton said. If you’re not a member yet, now is a great time to join to ensure you can access the library’s digital collection, which includes resources in 20 community languages, over the Christmas and New Year’s break. The Wagga Wagga City Library does not charge overdue fines and no items will be due for return while the library is closed over the holiday break. CHRISTMAS STORIES: Bring your young ones to the Library’s Christmas Storytime in the Botanic Gardens on Wednesday 14 December and Friday 16 December, between 10am and 11.30am.

Council would like to thank residents for their efforts in converting household food and organic (FOGO) waste into reusable compost, with the city recording its lowest contamination rate in our FOGO waste for 2022. The results from the latest audit, carried out in October, showed a contamination rate of 2.4 per cent in the 2,280kgs waste that was hand-sorted. Gregadoo Waste Management Centre Support Officer Tammie Cook said this figure was well below the 10.9 per cent recorded in the August audit. "This is a great result for our community and the environment and one we’d like to see carried forward into the new year," Ms Cook said. “The FOGO waste is processed and turned into professionally-made compost which is used primarily in primary production, from fruit and nuts, to broadacre crops. “So far in 2022, we have diverted 14,627 tonnes of FOGO from landfill; an increase of more than 292 tonnes on last year’s figures.” While contaminants such as soft plastics (plastic bags and food packaging), textiles, treated wood and concrete are still commonly seen in FOGO waste, Ms Cook is confident the community understands the environmental benefits of recycling food and garden waste. “It is likely the wet winter and spring contributed to the reduction of contamination, with a much higher level than usual of lawn clippings and garden waste in the mix,” Ms Cook said. “However, I think it also reflects how residents are taking on board the ‘Let’s Get Our Scrap Together’ message, realising that small changes can make a big impact.” To find out more on how you can get your scrap together, visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/wasteguides

Free and fun: activities for the summer holidays

Assessing flood damage on our roads

From Storytime to virtual reality, creating your own mini-magazine to meeting cuddly animals at the zoo, Wagga Wagga is the perfect place to be these holidays. Wagga Wagga City Library will be heading to the Botanic Gardens next week for their annual Storytime in the Park sessions. Storytime will take place near the adventure playground and barbeque area on Wednesday 14 December and Friday 16 December, between 10am and 11.30am. Teenagers and older kids will enjoy the chance to immerse themselves in an alternate universe with Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition Terminus, a virtual reality (VR) installation that transports the viewer into an imaginary landscape. Catch Terminus from 17 December 2022 until 5 February 2023 in the Art Gallery’s New Media Project Lab. Plan a visit to the Wagga Zoo and Aviary from Monday 26 December onwards for an opportunity to meet some of the zoo’s newest arrivals. The zoo team will be holding meet and greets daily from 11am near the wombat enclosure. The zoo will stay open seven days a week from Monday 26 December onwards for the rest of the school holidays. During January, young people aged 1217 years can try their hand at producing a zine; an original, self-published book. The library will be running a series of free zine workshops from 11 January to the 17 January. For Council facility opening times over Christmas and the New Year, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/openhours

Council is continuing to assess damage to our local roads in the wake of recent flooding events and will start repairs on priority areas before Christmas. Assisting Council in this task is the recent announcement that it will receive $793,152.34 under the NSW Government’s $50 million Fixing Local Roads Pothole Repair Round. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said he was pleased the funding application outcomes, and subsequent funds, were turned around quickly. “Council is appreciative of the funding to address the state-wide emergency, but we have a long way to go to address the overall funding shortfalls for regional road maintenance and renewals as a result of natural disaster,” Cr Tout said. “As of 1 December 2022, Council’s interim assessment of damage to our transport assets as a result of 2022 flooding events sits at over $1.9 million, not taking into consideration the cost of our emergency works completed to date, which totals $549,358.98. “This flood damage assessment is still ongoing. We need to start somewhere, and this funding will enable us to do just that, assisting us in engaging contractors to start repairing priority potholes and to respond to the deterioration of our road network before Christmas." There are plans to rehabilitate the following roads when the weather conditions for road works turn more favourable: sections of Inglewood Road, Old Narrandera Road, Gregadoo Road, Lord Baden Powell Drive, Bakers Lane, Inglewood Road, Copland Street, Lloyd Road, Nagle Street, and Macleay Street among others.
