Rain, hail or shine: Council's road works continue

Wagga Wagga City Council thanks road users and residents for their continued patience with the series of road works projects being undertaken on key distributor roads across our Local Government Area.

Night works on resurfacing a 380-metre stretch of Lake Albert Road, from Warrawong Street to and including the Copland Street intersection, began on Monday night, 6 February.

It is part of the $4.8 million project to rehabilitate one of Wagga Wagga’s busiest thoroughfares.

During the works, Lake Albert Road is being closed to through traffic at the roadworks site between 6pm to 6am.

Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said this project, along with Council’s program of road rehabilitation works, continue to forge ahead despite this week’s inclement weather.

“At this stage, the Lake Albert Road night works are expected to be completed during the Wednesday night shift next week,” Mr Faulkner said.

“We were able to complete the initial phase of the rehabilitation works on Copland Street, between Blaxland Road and Tasman Road, on Wednesday before the thunderstorms arrived.

“This work involved the stabilisation of the pavement and resealing of the road and is expected to be completed late next week by building resilience into the wearing surface at the intersections with Blaxland Road, Lawson Street, Hartog Place and Say Street by asphalt overlaying them.

“We’ve also been continuing works to widen and stabilise Mitchell Road, between Brunskill Road and Inglewood Road, while contractors commenced works this week on the rehabilitation of Lloyd Road, from Plumpton Road and Holbrook Road.”

The upgrade and sealing of the fivekilometre section of unsealed road on Old Narrandera Road, near Council’s boundary with Narrandera Shire Council, is also underway.

Night works are also scheduled to start on Nagle Street from Friday 17 February to Monday 27 February, weather permitting. The road will be closed from 6pm to 6am on weeknights only, with traffic diverted to the Sturt Highway and Copland Street.

Traffic control measure are in place at these road work sites. Motorists are asked to plan their journeys and expect delays.

POP CULTURE EVENT: Wagga Wagga

Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall is inviting the community to see works by the best contemporary artists in Australia.

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is preparing for a monumental year of exhibitions, launching this Saturday with the Archibald Prize 2022

Regional Tour

Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall said the exhibition gives the community a chance to see the finalists in the nation’s most prestigious portraiture prize.

“The Archibald Prize is a pop culture event anticipated by artists and audiences right across the country,” Dr Hall said.

“For some artists, it’s a chance to not only paint a portrait, but contribute to the wider conversation around an issue. A perfect example is the outstanding 2022 winner Moby Dickens by Blak Douglas.”

Dr Hall said the work, which depicts the disastrous 2022 floods in northern NSW, has brought great attention to the current environmental crisis.

“Our entire program of exhibitions this year is focused on the environment,” Dr Hall said.

"Our road patching crews have also been out and about fixing the potholes which continue to develop in the wake of each wet weather event which hits the region,” Mr Faulkner said.

“Our road network covers more than 2,288 kilometres of sealed and unsealed roads, so we really appreciate the community reporting potholes through our website or to Customer Service so we can patch them as soon as possible.”

You can contact Customer Service on 1300 292 442 or submit a service request online at eservices.wagga.nsw. gov.au

It’s back! Relaunch of the Bald Archy Prize

Celebrating the lighter side of art and the larrikin Australian spirit, the 22 portraits in the $10,000 Bald Archy Prize 2023 exhibition tour have been officially unveiled to the public in our nation’s capital, Canberra.

Australia’s premier satirical art prize is returning for its 27th year, showcasing hilarious caricatures of notable Australians from sport, politics, and popular culture.

The official launch was held at the Watson Art Centre in Canberra on Thursday 9 February.

Join us to commemorate National Apology Day

Wagga Wagga City Council is inviting residents to attend the commemoration of the 15th anniversary of National Apology Day, to hear from young Wiradjuri/ Wiradyuri people on their understanding of the day and what it means to the First Nations community. Council's Aboriginal Community Development Officer Bernard Higgins said the event, which will be held at the Civic Centre on Monday 13 February at 10am,

After the passing of founding director Peter Batey OAM in 2019, the administration of the Bald Archy Prize along with the collection was bequeathed to the Museum of the Riverina.

Museum Manager Luke Grealy is pleased to see the prize return after a three-year hiatus.

“The museum is excited to be relaunching the Bald Archy Prize and carrying on Peter’s legacy of presenting great satirical art,” Mr Grealy said.

“Our partnership with the Watson Art Centre and sponsor Jerry Schwartz of the ibis Sydney Barangaroo is fundamental to the success of the Bald Archy Prize, and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.”

The Bald Archy Prize is known internationally as the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphurcrested cockatoo named Maude.

The portraits will be on display at the Watson Art Centre until 12 March 2023 before touring nine venues across urban and regional NSW, wrapping up in Wagga Wagga from 22 December 2023 to 28 January 2024.

The winner of the $10,000 Bald Archy Prize 2023 will be announced at the ibis Sydney Barangaroo on Tuesday 21 March.

“Yindyamarra Johnson and Ella McCorry will lead the event proceedings, which will commence with an Acknowledgement of Country being performed by Eva Tseros in Wiradjuri Language,” Mr Higgins said.

“The community can expect to watch traditional dance performed by the Ashmont Public School Dance Group, as well as hear poems by Forest Hill and Red Hill Public School primary students.

“Wiradjuri/Wiradyuri and First Nations young people from local schools will then be joined by Elders for the flag raising ceremony.”

The event will also include a public viewing of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s speech 'Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples' along with an Apology Day video commissioned by Council in 2022, in collaboration with members of the Wiradjuri/Wiradyuri and First Nations community.

Traffic changes at Jubilee Park for Junior Touch titles

The annual NSW Touch Association’s (NSWTA) Junior State Cup Southern Conference returns to Wagga Wagga next week.

It’s the fifth time in a row our city has hosted the event, which will draw players and spectators from across southern NSW to the Jubilee Park precinct from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 February.

In 2021 and 2022, the event was run under an ‘arrive-play-leave’ format in response to COVID-19 restrictions.

Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said this year it will return to the pre-COVID structure of games with participants able to stay onsite.

“We are expecting upwards of 8,000 players and spectators over the course of the three days, which will mean a lot more traffic and pedestrians on the roads surrounding the precinct,” Mr Cook said.

“You can expect some lane closures and detours in place on the roads around the precinct, and there will be higher than usual traffic movements throughout each day of the three-day carnival.”

Red Hill Road will be open to westbound traffic only between the Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, while a 40 kilometre per hour speed limit will be in effect along that stretch of road.

Council will have traffic management personnel in place at major intersections and signage in the area to assist the flow of traffic.

“Detours will be signposted, and motorists are asked to take care in the area as there will be additional traffic and pedestrians around Jubilee Park,” Mr Cook said.

Traffic changes:

Red Hill Road will be closed to eastbound traffic between the Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, with detours via Bruce Street. Bourke Street between Bourkelands Drive and Red Hill Road roundabout will be closed to non-event traffic, with detours via Berembee Road, Bourkelands Drive and Holbrook Road. Road closures will be in place from 6am to 7pm on Friday and Saturday and 6am to 3pm on Sunday. Detours will be signposted.
