GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK: Recreation

Plan of Management.

Wagga Wagga City Council is inviting the community’s input on its proposed 10-year plan of management for the Lake Albert precinct.

The draft Lake Albert Plan of Management is now on public exhibition and is open to public submissions until 7 November through an online submission on our Have Your Say Wagga Wagga website.

The management plan covers the Lake Albert precinct and includes Crown Land, Wagga Wagga City Council Land, and commercially owned parcels of land.

Council’s Recreation Coordinator Joshua Walsh says the comprehensive 10-year document outlines a strategic framework for the future management of the Lake Albert precinct.

“This is one of Wagga Wagga’s, and the region's, most popular gathering spots, offering a range of facilities for leisure, active recreation, community events and markets, and it is a natural habitat area,” Mr Walsh said.

“Our aim through the plan is to manage the Lake Albert precinct cooperatively with, and for, the benefit of residents, the community and the wider

region, and to maintain and improve the amenity of the Lake Albert precinct, consistent with the established character of the area.

“It’s important to get our community’s opinion and perspective on this draft document as it will serve as a guiding resource for the future planning, design, and management of the land.”

In drafting the plan, Council sought community feedback and input from key stakeholders during an extensive consultation phase, which will be ongoing during the public exhibition period.

Key features of the draft plan cover the cultural significance of Lake Albert, current uses and potential uses of the lake and surrounding precinct, and water quality.

While the document does not recommend a specific solution to the Lake Albert water quality issues, it does identify several options to be investigated and implemented if deemed feasible and subject to the relevant statutory approvals.

“This is the community’s opportunity to voice their opinions and perspectives to the future planning of the Lake Albert precinct,” Mr Walsh said.

“The feedback we receive through

the public submissions, along with detailed consultation undertaken with the lake users, surrounding residents and the Wiradjuri community, will be an important contribution to the final management plan.”

The online submissions will be open until Thursday 7 November 2024 at haveyoursay.wagga.nsw.gov.au/ draft-lake-albert-plan-management

If you’re a bird lover and looking at getting involved in this year’s Aussie Bird Count, there are plenty of free and guided activities over the bird count week to get spirits flying.

Held from 14-20 October, the Aussie Bird Count is a citizen science project run by Birdlife Australia that asks participants to record the birds they see for 20 minutes each day.

Council’s Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid is encouraging people to attend Council’s free sessions to learn about our local fauna and for help navigating the Bird Count app.

“You can complete the count at any time and enter your findings on the free Aussie Bird Count app,” Ms Reid said. “Council has organised local events at different locations across the city for anyone wanting guidance with the app, how to log results, or just wants to chat with other bird lovers.”

Aussie Bird Count events:

• Sunday 13 October – Bird walk at Rocky Hill. Brush up on your bird watching skills at Rocky Hill before the official start of the Aussie Bird Count on Monday.

• Monday 14 October – Bird walk from the Wiradjuri Walking Track to the Marrambidya Wetland with Council Environmental staff.

• Wednesday 15 October – Bird walk at Flowerdale Lagoon with Council Environmental staff.

• Thursday 17 October – Info Session at ErinEarth, focusing on designing and planting a bird garden, as well as different bird nests and habitat requirements.

• Saturday 19 October – Bird walk at the Museum of the Riverina – Botanic Gardens site, with Museum staff.

• Sunday 20 October – Henty Wetlands bird walkabout with Birdlife Australia.

REFRESH: Council is 'em-bark-ing' on a revamp and upgrade of the off-leash dog park in O’Halloran Park at the northern end of Lake Albert.

Lake Albert dog park to get a

A popular site in Lake Albert for Wagga Wagga residents and their canine companions is about to get a much-needed facelift.

Council is undertaking a project to upgrade the dog park in O’Halloran Park, at the northern end of Lake Albert, with work expected to commence on Monday 14 October, weather permitting.

Parks and Recreation Assets Officer

Rob Owers said the dog park is regularly visited by local residents who want a place to let their pets off-leash in close proximity to the lake, but the facility has been ageing and is in need of a refresh.

“Council has received a number of requests from the public over the past couple of years to have this park upgraded,” Mr Owers said.

“The Lake Albert dog park has not had any renewals for a long time, possibly more than 15 years; it’s now time to upgrade it to bring it up to a relevant standard.”

As part of the works, the existing agility equipment will get a fresh coat of paint and any maintenance required, while new additions will include a shelter and picnic seating, a bubbler, double gates to enter and leave the park, and various seating for pet owners and visitors.

Irrigation and turf will also be installed inside the dog park, as well as a concrete access path from the carpark.

During the works, the dog park will be closed and access to the area immediately surrounding the facility will also be restricted when the new fencing, path and turf are being installed.

“We understand this will cause inconvenience for those residents who regularly take their dogs to the park, but we ask for your patience and understanding as we carry out this project to refresh, renew and upgrade the facility,” Mr Owers said.

The project is expected to get underway on Monday 14 October, and will take around two months to complete.

More information about the upgrade can be found at haveyoursay.wagga. nsw.au/lake-albert-dog-park-upgrade

Council is partnering with a range of local support services to help parents and carers get the facts and find the support they need to have respectful discussions about being safe online with young people.

Council’s Community Development team regularly receives enquiries from parents and carers seeking information to keep the youth in their care safe online.

Youth and Community Development Officer Mel Fattore says Council, in consultation with local services and education support workers, has developed an information session to help address this knowledge gap, to be held on Tuesday 22 October.

“The evening information session is designed to bring parents, carers and the services that locally work in this space together to have a conversation and provide an after-hours opportunity for parents and carers to seek advice,” Ms Fattore said.

“The session will help parents and carers to understand the support services available in our city for them and their young people, as well as gain the tools to speak with young people about safely engaging online.”

Youth liaison officers from Riverina District Police, clinical psychologists and community engagement officers from local services and high schools will be presenting and available for questions on the night.

“To help make it accessible for parents and carers with caring responsibilities of children and young people, we have arranged a family-friendly movie, snacks and supervised activities in the adjoining room,” Ms Fattore said.

The free information session is being held on Tuesday 22 October, from 5pm to 7pm in the Council Meeting Room.

“Both newly elected and reelected councillors will undertake a comprehensive induction program in coming weeks to ensure they are ready to fulfill their roles,” Mr Thompson said.

“This will include providing the councillors with an overview of the structure and operations of Council, as well as the legislative context and obligations associated with their roles.”

Mr Thompson said there are several major projects currently underway and in the planning stages which will come to fruition during the new Council’s fouryear term.

Mr Thompson thanked the previous councillors for their service to the community over the past term.

The first Ordinary Council Meeting for the newly elected councillors will be held on Monday 14 October, where they will elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
