Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout welcomed the approach by GIANTS Netball to play the pre-season game in Wagga Wagga.

“It’s a great opportunity for netball players and fans fromthe area to see women’s netball at its best without having to pay for the accommodation and travel expenses” Cr Tout said.

“We know from the success of the GIANTS’ pre-season match against the Melbourne Mavericks back in March this year that there’s strong support for the sport in our region.

“General admission tickets to that game sold out in half-an-hour, and we put in extra seating so we could offer an additional 500 tickets to the general public.

“There are such important social benefits of bringing this level of women’s sporting competition to Wagga Wagga.”

The GIANTS’ pre-season game would be part of a regional tour with other games to be played within Regional NSW.

Executive General Manager GIANTS Netball Tim Underwood said the team was thrilled to announce its return to the Wagga Wagga region for a pre-season

game in 2025.

“The support we received during our last visit was truly overwhelming, and we can’t wait to reconnect with the community,” Mr Underwood said.

“Wagga Wagga has a vibrant netball culture, and it’s important for us to engage with our fans beyond the major cities. This pre-season game is an opportunity to inspire the next generation of players and showcase our talent.”

Manager City Growth & Regional Assets Ben Creighton believes it’s important to continue to have elite level sporting teams to the city.

“I know the GIANTS were really happy with the stadium and the other activities around it when they visited back in March,” Mr Creighton said.

“But it's not just the actual event itself, it’s the training camps, it's the school visits, it's all the community development work that the GIANTS do here in town as well, which is really important.”

At this stage, Council anticipates there will be seating for approximately 1000 people at the Multi-Purpose Stadium for next year’s event, 900 of those to be set aside for general public.

The City of Wagga Wagga has a new leadership team after Councillors this week elected the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Dallas Tout was elected for his third term as the city’s Mayor and Cr Georgie Davies was elected the Deputy Mayor at the first meeting of the new Council on Monday 14 October 2024.

The Mayoral election was contested by Cr Tout and Councillor Amelia Parkins, with the vote seven-two in favour of Cr Tout who has served as the city’s Mayor since January 2022 and had previously been the Deputy Mayor since 2014.

There were two nominees for the position of Deputy Mayor – Cr Davies and Cr Parkins, with Cr Davies securing six of the nine votes.

Cr Tout said he looked forward to working as Mayor with Deputy Mayor Cr Davies over the next 12 months, as well as the councillor and council team.

“The leadership of council sits within the nine councillors; the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are representational in nature, whether that be attending meetings as required, chairing meetings or attending business and community events,” Cr Tout said.

“There are some key priority areas for the new Council, such as resolving the tenure of the Wagga Wagga Airport, infrastructure around the LGA, Lake Albert, and the Special Activation Precinct, but at the heart of it all is the community.

“Working with community, and continuing to talk to community, and consult with community about everything, not just the big picture stuff, that is what Councillors are there for.”

Cr Davies said it was a great honour to be elected as Deputy Mayor, and she felt humbled but excited about being given the opportunity to serve in the role for the next 12 months.

“I'm overwhelmed by the support from my fellow councillors,” Cr Davies said.

“We work as a really good team. We did last term, and I hope that will continue into this term.”

The mid-term mayoral elections in Wagga Wagga will be held in September 2026, with the next election for the deputy mayor role to be held in September 2025.

One Tree for Me done for 2024, but prize still up for grabs

Wagga Wagga City Council would like to thank the 1,200 community members who attended the One Tree For Me seedling giveaways for 2024 and helped get 6,000 plants in the ground.

Council held three seedling giveaways in Gumly Gumly, Estella, and Turvey Park in June, August and September in an effort to get seedlings out into our community.

Council’s Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid said the One Tree for Me initiative focuses on local action to maintain biodiversity and lessen the impacts of land clearing.

“By planting seedlings in our own backyards, we replace some of the habitat that has been cleared and support some of our littlest native critters, such as bees, butterflies and birds.

“All of the selected seedlings are local native species that have evolved over time to thrive in the local Wagga Wagga area.

“The seedlings are sourced from local nurseries that are grown ahead of time to

ensure they reach maturity in time for the giveaways.”

Ms Reid said the Council’s Environment team are now planning for next year and are encouraging this year’s participants to complete a short survey.

“By filling out the survey you will help Council plan for a more successful program for 2025 and ensure we reach our goal of 65,000 seedlings planted in the local area by 2026.

“As a reward for completing it, you will

“While some of the vendors are commercial operators, we also have several community groups, supported by the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, who will be cooking their own international culinary cuisines.

As part of Council’s commitment to addressing waste management, FUSION BOTANICAL encourages a sustainable festival ground. Clearly signed and colour-coded waste collection stations will be strategically placed across the festival site.

This year, ‘Waste Warriors’ will be on-hand at waste collection stations throughout the festival site to help educate and direct people on how to dispose of their waste correctly to minimise contamination.

FUSION BOTANICAL will be presented at the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens Precinct, Macleay Street, on Wiradyuri Ngurambang (Country), from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 19 October.
