Local students create new mural in Ashmont
Students from Ashmont Public School embraced their inner artist this week as part of Council’s Public Art Plan’s Neighbourhood Engagement initiative to bring vibrancy to suburban areas in Wagga Wagga.
The project involved the development of a mural at Jack Mission Oval, which features designs created by students in collaboration with artists Amanda Newman and Natalie L Simmons.
Council’s Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds says the Public Art Plan identified four suburbs in our city to focus on for this program.
“The Neighbourhood Engagement project is about improving local neighbourhoods in Mount Austin, Ashmont, Tolland and Kooringal,” Ms Reynolds said.
“By engaging directly with the Ashmont Public School students and community, this fosters a sense of ownership and pride in the artwork, as well as giving this school community a chance to contribute to the creation of the artwork.”
Artists Natalie L Simmons and Amanda Newman worked with students and teachers from Ashmont Public
School, along with local Elder Aunty Gail Manderson, in a series of workshops and feedback sessions to create a mural design that reflected their values and ideas.
Amanda Newman highlighted the importance of community engagement, public art, and storytelling in the project.
“The central concept of the design is a serpent shedding its skin to symbolise rebirth into a safe place, with additional elements inspired by local Aboriginal stories contributing to the project,”
Amanda said.
The mural design also includes a portrait of Aunty Louise Niki, who was the Aboriginal Education Officer at Ashmont Public School for more than 20 years.
The decision to include the portrait was a result of consultation with the school and family of Aunty Louise Niki.
Both artists also said the focus of the workshops was exploring the meaning of ‘Yindyamarra’ with the students, with the design aiming to reflect the community’s connection to country.
“Through doing the workshops, we explored what ‘Yindyamarra’ means to the students, being the Wiradyuri concept of respect, being gentle and polite, to honour and do slowly,” Natalie
From culture to cuisine, there is so much to enjoy at the city’s sprawling Botanic Gardens Precinct on Saturday 19 October.
Headlining FUSION BOTANICAL multicultural festival are MOWGLI (DJ SET) (Perth/ Boorloo), Packing Dhaka (Sydney/Eora), Chikchika (Melbourne/ Naarm).
These unique Australian artists will bring an eclectic mix of beats and genres to the Brolga Pond stage, kicking off at 4pm.
Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said FUSION BOTANICAL has grown to be one of the city’s biggest outdoor events, with thousands of residents and visitors from across the region and beyond soaking up the sights and sounds on offer.
“We’ve curated an exciting and eclectic line-up with some of the country’s most creative and talented artists,” Ms Summerhayes said.
“Along with our headline and support acts, there will be a mix of other entertainment including our amazing community performers, Mending People: Cross-cultural Textile Project, giant lawn games, Bike Canteen DIY bike repair workshops, and a large-scale temporary public art installation.”
Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga’s CEO Belinda Crain says there will be plenty of tasty treats on offer to tempt the taste buds of festivalgoers.
“You will want to arrive hungry at FUSION BOTANICAL, with more than 20 traditional street food and drink vendors operating in the much-loved World Food Village,” Ms Crain said.
Try authentic street food, soak up the festival atmosphere and dance to upbeat culturally diverse live music and a DJ set at FUSION BOTANICAL in the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens Precinct from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 19 October.

Join the holiday hunt at the museum
The Museum of the Riverina has put out a call for help!
The forces of LEGO® good, LEGO® evil and LEGO® neutral will be up to their tricks again during the upcoming school break, and the museum needs as many volunteers as possible to track them down!
Museum Education and Public Programs Officer Angus Cawdell-Smith said that after its huge success last school holidays the LEGO® Minifigure Hunt is on again for the young and young at heart at the Museum of the Riverina - Botanic Gardens site.
“Visitors can help by finding all the LEGO® Minifigures hidden throughout the museum and go into a draw to win one of three prizes,” Mr Cawdell-Smith said.
“Other free holiday activities include Museum After Dark on 28 September, an event for young people aged 12-18 years that features Nintendo Switch tournaments and retro arcade games, movies with fresh buttered popcorn, and a DJ playing hot hits.
“There’s also Pollinator Colouring In, where you can choose one of six different colouring sheets to create something beautiful and at the same time think about
what our amazing pollinators like bees and butterflies do for us!
“Or you can take part in a collaborative art project by helping decorate the museum’s beautiful garden pathway with birds, trees, bats or bees … whatever your heart desires.”
The museum will also be hosting a range of other activities, including workshops, that start at $5 for each participant.
These include a children’s brooch making and headband embellishing workshop with world-famous milliner Marea Bright, making hotels for bees, and a bird watching workshop where participants find out why birds are important to the environment and how to identify them.
“There’s also the Rare Trades Weekend coming up over the weekend of 5 and 6 October, featuring crafts and rare trades including a spoon carving workshop on Saturday 5 October,” Mr Cawdell-Smith said.
“And for anyone riding on the Willans Hill Miniature Railway on Sunday 6 October, you can hitch a lift to the famous Museum Station to take part in some of the holiday activities.”
