Line marking underway with Bourke Street
road works to be completed in spring
Road works on Bourke Street, between Urana Street and Fernleigh Road, will receive line marking in the coming weeks to make travel lanes easily identifiable until further works by Council’s external contractors are undertaken this coming spring.
The Bourke Street road works commenced in May 2023 as an additional project to Council’s 202223 program of pavement renewal and improvement projects due to funding that was made available from the NSW Government.
Director Infrastructure Services
Warren Faulkner said Council is working with the contractor who undertook the work to ensure that the project meets the standards required of this piece of infrastructure.
“We are working on a timeline to complete the project and ensure the road meets quality standards,” Mr Faulkner said.
“Due to current cold and wet conditions, it is expected those works will take place in spring once the weather has warmed up.”
Council's line marking contractor is currently in town undertaking line marking of the roads that have been rehabilitated over the last six months.
The city’s much-loved springtime festival, FUSION BOTANICAL is returning to Wagga Wagga’s spectacular Botanic Gardens precinct in October – and you can be part of it!
Wagga Wagga City Council and longterm cultural partners, the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, are inviting Expressions of Interest from local performers, and street food and drink vendors to help entertain and feed festival goers.

Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said this year’s festival is expected to be well supported by locals and draw crowds from across the Riverina region this spring.
“Our FUSION festival has grown to become a highlight on the regional events calendar since its inception in 2011,” Ms Summerhayes said.
“Planning is underway for FUSION BOTANICAL 2023, on Saturday 21 October, and we’re curating a fun, diverse line-up of music and entertainment, to be
announced closer to the event.
“Along with the live music, the street food precinct is one of the most popular parts of this community event. Festival folk can look forward to feasting on authentic and modern street-style food.
“Many geographical regions are represented in the World Food Village from Europe to the Middle East, through to Asia and the Americas.”
If you want to add your traditional cuisine to the food line-up, then submit your expression of interest before 5pm on Friday 18 August 2023.
“We’re also looking for community performers to add to the vibrant festival atmosphere,” Ms Summerhayes said.
To apply, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/fusion and make your submission before 5pm on Friday 18 August 2023.

Council engaged the contractor in late April 2023, however due to inclement weather and their workload, they were delayed in getting to Wagga Wagga.
Line marking works commenced on Inglewood Road on 12 July.

The contractors have completed line marking on Inglewood Road (2.4km), Mitchell Road (1km), Lake Albert Road (1km), Macleay Street (1km), Old Narrandera Road (5.4km), and Copland Street (1.2km), and have been remarking Byrnes Road this week.
“Foggy weather has been hampering progress, but they are committed to completing these works as soon as they can,” Mr Faulkner said.
“Completion of each project is providing improved delineation for road users with the addition of edge lines and dedicated centre turning lanes which enhances the safety of the road network.”

Duke of Kent community building nearing completion
Construction of the new Duke of Kent community building has made significant progress and is moving steadily towards completion.
The purpose-built facility in Shaw Street, to the south-east of the Duke of Kent Oval, will be the new home for the Wagga Wagga Veteran & Vintage Motor Club and University of the Third Age (U3A).
It will also be available for use by other community groups.

Development of this new facility was a commitment Council made to users of the former Wagga Wagga Veteran & Vintage Motor Club building site in Morgan Street, when it was sold in late 2020.
Wagga Wagga City Council Manager of Recreation and Economic Development Ben Creighton said the build has progressed smoothly since local contractor Adaptive Interiors started work in late 2022.
“All external doors and windows are now in place, along with the external cladding,” Mr Creighton said.
“Currently, the focus is on the internal fit-out and concreting, with work on the carpark scheduled to commence soon.
“This $695,000 project is an investment in the community, and it is exciting to be moving into the final stage of works.
“When it is complete, we will have a modern high-quality space in central Wagga Wagga that will support social connectedness and the activities of our local community groups.”

The building includes a large meeting area that can be converted into two spaces by a soundproof dividing wall.
The expected completion date is the end of August 2023, weather permitting.

Celebrate National Tree Day 2023
More than 3000 seedlings will be planted across the Wagga Wagga region as part of National Tree Day 2023.

Wagga Wagga City Council has donated over 2000 seedlings to 25 local schools and preschools for Schools National Tree Day on Friday 28 July, and another 1200 for the community planting event on Sunday 30 July.
This year the Charles Sturt University Farm has kindly offered to host the community tree planting site, located off Cambourne Lane, Gobbagombalin.
This planting site has been selected to enhance foraging and shelter habitat within the flight path of the threatened Superb Parrot.
Major threats to the Superb Parrot, including the clearing and degradation of nesting and foraging habitats,

disturbance around nesting sites, and competition for nest hollows, have resulted in a significant decline in the Superb Parrot’s range and population numbers over the last few decades.
The National Tree Day seedlings have been specifically selected to enhance the connectivity of Superb Parrot flight paths and include White Box, Yellow Box, Deane’s Wattle, Gold Dust Wattle and Kangaroo Thorn.
Once the seedlings have been established, the planting site will also contribute to vital corridor connections for a number of other native species, helping them to move throughout the area to seek food and shelter.
For those interested in taking part in Wagga Wagga’s National Tree Day planting on Sunday 30 July, registrations can be made online.
Volunteers should wear warm clothing, enclosed footwear and bring along a pair of gardening gloves. Planting equipment will be provided.
All participants will receive a free native seedling to take home and plant and be treated to a free sausage sizzle, cooked by Wagga Wagga Urban Landcare and provided by Wagga Wagga City Council.
