Centenary Torch Relay welcomes the Legacy

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023 has made a stopover in Wagga Wagga on its six-month journey to commemorate 100 years of service to the nation.

Dozens of local community representatives were given the opportunity to carry the Legacy Centenary Torch as part of the relay, including Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout.

A special Mayoral Reception was also held at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery on Thursday 3 August for Legacy, attended by Legacy Australia CEO Graham Boyd, Defence Health Community Relationship Manager ACT & Southern NSW Kane Hall, and Legacy Wagga Wagga President Doug Conkey.

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023 travelled from Pozieres in France, through Belgium and London before returning to Australia in May 2023.

Two bridges lowered into place on the Active Travel Plan Forest Hill link

In a significant step in the first stage of the Forest Hill link of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Active Travel Plan, two bridges have recently been placed over Marshall’s Creek.

Council Manager Recreation and Economic Development Ben Creighton said together with a one-kilometre shared path, the two pedestrian bridges will connect Kooringal Road and Vincent Road through a Council road reserve.

“The bridges are three metres in width which allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely pass each other in opposite directions,” Mr Creighton said.

“One of the bridges measures 18 metres in length while the second one is 26 metres long.

“We are aiming for this section of the shared path to be ready in time for summer.”

Design and approval works are currently being undertaken for the remaining sections of the Forest Hill link.

Once completed, the seven-kilometre Forest Hill link will connect from Kooringal Road to Elizabeth Avenue in Forest Hill.

The Active Travel Plan project is jointly funded by the NSW Government and Wagga Wagga City Council.

Its journey takes in cities and towns across the nation, covering 50,000 kilometres and 100 stops, carried by approximately 1500 torch bearers and involving more than 2000 volunteers.

The commemorative event will recognise the sacrifice of many families over the past century as well as the efforts of countless volunteers and Legatees who have supported them throughout grief and hardship.

Wagga Wagga’s Mayor said it was an honour to be selected to carry the Legacy Centenary Torch on one of the legs of its journey through the streets of Wagga Wagga.

“To be selected for such a prestigious responsibility is very humbling,”

Cr Tout said.

“To acknowledge the great works that Legacy has undertaken in 100 years of service in a city that has representation of Army, Navy and Air Force is profound. Legacy is part of the DNA in our city and region.

“As others do, I look forward to representing community to acknowledge such a critical milestone for such a wonderful organisation.

“By community, for community.”

Legacy supports over 40,000 partners and children of veterans who gave their lives or health while serving our country.

The Torch Relay will conclude in Melbourne in October 2023.

Help activate the city’s public spaces with expanded access to food outlets

Five additional mobile food vendors could soon be setting up business at local public spaces, with applications open for permits to operate within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area.

At their meeting in November last year, councillors adopted changes to the Mobile Food Vendors Trading in Public Place Policy, which allowed for an increase in the cap on the number of vendor permits from 15 to 20.

The changes also saw the duration of the permits extended from 12 months to 24 months.

Manager Recreation & Economic Development Ben Creighton said the Mobile Food Vendor initiative has proved successful and competitive since it was introduced in December 2019 after a five-month trial.

“The access to diverse food and beverage outlets has played an important role in the activation of the city’s public spaces by making them more attractive destinations,” Mr Creighton said.

“We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the community who enjoy the opportunity to grab a hot or cold drink or get something to eat when they head out to spaces such as our parks and Riverside precinct, or even while just driving to work.

“Council recognised the increasing demand for mobile food vendors by making additional permits available to enable existing businesses to continue to operate, and to provide opportunities for people who’ve been considering setting up a new mobile food vendor business.”

The permits allow vendors to operate on Council owned and managed land, between 6am to 10pm, provided they remain 200 metres from a bricks and mortar food and beverage premises. Applications are sought from qualified and suitable mobile food vendors in the local government area. Expressions of Interest are open until 5pm on Monday 14 August 2023.

Record numbers at National Tree Day 2023 community planting event Wagga Wagga photographer captures local neighbourhoods in solo exhibition

Residents of Wagga Wagga and surrounds picked up their gardening gloves and trowels to help plant seedlings for the community planting event run by Wagga Wagga City Council in celebration of National Tree Day 2023.

An exhibition featuring photographs, poetry and interactive sculpture, exploring the neighbourhoods of Wagga Wagga and Cootamundra, where the artist grew up, is now open at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.

Environmental Officer Samantha Pascall said the event exceeded expectations, with an increased number of volunteers over previous National Tree Day events.

“We have been overwhelmed with the response from the volunteers; we had more than 120 people register for the event, and even more who showed up on the day,” Ms Pascall said.

The planting saw 145 volunteers choose to devote their Sunday morning to helping our local biodiversity.

With so many hands to help, the work was finished earlier than ever before with a record finish time of 11.30am.

The seedlings planted were specifically chosen to help the threatened Superb Parrot, a native bird species which has been declining in range and abundance for the past century.

“The most significant threats to the Superb Parrot include destruction of breeding and foraging habitat through widespread clearing, land degradation and fragmentation, disturbance around breeding sites and competition for nest hollows”, Ms Pascall said.

“A large amount of our natural areas have been cleared. It is very important to provide a safe passage for our native wildlife to move throughout our LGA to gain access to much needed resources including food, shelter, and water.”

The seedlings, once established, will create vital corridor connections for several native species to move throughout the area and to seek food and shelter.

Windows of Wondering is a solo exhibition from Wagga Wagga artist Brittany Hefren, who is part of the Art Gallery’s 2023 Regional Artist Development (RAD) Program.

The program promotes the development and mentoring opportunities for artists across the Riverina region.

In 2022, Hefren was part of a previous artist in residence program at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, where she developed her photographic practice under the guidance of Art Gallery staff and F.Stop Workshop across a 10-week period.

“As a result of this opportunity at the Art Gallery I was able to fully develop this exhibition Windows of Wondering,” Hefren said.

Hefren uses photography and poetry as a tool to draw parallels between patterns observed in nature and human experience.

The exhibition, which captures local street scenes, neighbourhoods, and houses, invites the audience to reflect on their own connection to place and to view their surrounds through a new lens or light.

Brittany Hefren will be hosting a free artist talk and photo walk on Sunday 13 August at 11am.

The photo walk encourages people to explore mindful walking and capture their surrounds through the lens of a camera.

Windows of Wondering is open to the public until Sunday 20 August 2023 in the E3 art space at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.
