Section of Forsyth Street to close for rehabilitation

Wagga Wagga City Council advises residents and road users there will be a major disruption to traffic conditions in Forsyth Street in the city’s CBD, with the road expected to be closed for up to 10 days for rehabilitation works, starting on Monday 11 November.

The stretch of Forsyth Street between Baylis Street and Berry Street will be closed for 24 hours a day as contractors Complete Road Seal (CRS) carry out the night works.

Director Infrastructure Services Henry Pavitt says the work will involve road reconstruction with full-depth asphalt.

“In the same way they’ve been doing the current Kooringal Road upgrade, CRS will mill out the existing road pavement and replace it with a new thick layer of asphalt at the base, prior to the final stage of works which will be to put in the wearing course,” Mr Pavitt said.

“The road, including the crossing between the Sturt Mall and Wagga Marketplace, will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians for the duration of the project, which we anticipate will take between eight to 10 days to complete, depending on the weather conditions.

“We understand this will cause inconvenience to shoppers, businesses and motorists in the vicinity, but it is essential to ensure everyone’s safety as there will be a lot of heavy machinery and equipment on site.”

Detours will be in place for motorists and pedestrians.

Mr Pavitt recommends that people always follow the advice of the traffic controllers.

Council staff have spoken to business operators along Forsyth Street, as well as those businesses on the eastern side of Baylis Street which use Invermay Lane for night-time deliveries.

“We have also liaised with Sturt Mall and Wagga Marketplace management, and with some of the larger retail outlets which currently access their delivery bay from Forsyth Street,” Mr Pavitt said.

“We are working with them on developing contingency plans regarding how best to enable continued access during the works, to minimise disruptions to deliveries, however, impacts will remain.”

The Forsyth Street works are scheduled to start on Monday 11 November and be completed Wednesday 20 November 2024, again, weather permitting.

It will be followed by rehabilitation night works on Berry Street (between Morgan and Forsyth streets), and Morgan Street (between Blake and Tarcutta streets and Murray and Docker streets).

“Council thanks residents and motorists in advance for their patience and cooperation throughout the closure and detour period.”

These upgrades are funded under the State Government’s Regional Emergency Road Repair fund, the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program, and Council’s Urban Asphalt program.

Council, in collaboration with police from the Wagga Wagga Local Area Command, are inviting residents from across the Local Government Area to head to the Riverside Park Precinct for our 2024 Family Community Safety Day.

The family-friendly event is being held between 10am and 12 midday on Saturday 7 December 2024 during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.

Council’s Community Development Coordinator Alex Osgood is encouraging community members to come along, connect with local first responders and learn more about supports for people experiencing domestic and family violence.

“We will have representatives from the Wagga Domestic Violence Liaison Committee, police, Fire and Rescue NSW, the Rural Fire Service, and local emergency volunteer groups at Riverside," Alex Osgood said.

“The purpose of these events is to work with local police to engage with community on a regular basis about any community safety concerns and highlight local support for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence.

“It is also an opportunity for community to engage with their local first responders in more positive settings instead of a crisis situation.”

Professional Standards, Youth and Engagement Officer with the Police District Inspector Jillian Gibson believes the Family Community Safety Day is an important initiative.

“Community safety is about recognising the need for all sections of the community to work together to create a safer environment for people to work, live and travel, especially during the upcoming festive season,” Inspector Gibson said.

“This means building partnerships between police, government agencies, local council, community organisations and individuals to promote and strengthen community safety for all.”

Council has recently refreshed the popular Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Trail Map, a guide showcasing the City’s best cycling and walking trails and featuring popular attractions and points of interest along the way.

Visitor Economy Development Officer Cassandra Farquharson said the map, featuring six trails across the city, caters to a vast audience.

“From leisurely walks around the Wollundry Lagoon to heart-pumping bushland trails at Pomingalarna Reserve, from family-friendly fun at the Multisport Cycling Complex to testing endurance around the Wiradjuri Trail, the Trail Map covers it all.”

The guide also highlights Council’s 56km network of dedicated cycle paths as part of the Active Travel Plan.

“The overarching goal of the map is to promote Wagga Wagga + Surrounds as a destination that can be easily enjoyed on bike or foot, making the area more attractive to potential sporting events and travelling cyclists,” Ms Farquharson said.

“It’s not too late to submit an application. Nominations close at midnight on Sunday 24 November 2024, and can be completed online or submitted in hard copy at Council’s Customer Service Desk.”

NOMINATE

COMMUNITY ROLE

MODELS: Wagga Wagga Council Event Officers Amy McDonnell and Emma Corbett say the Australia Day Awards are the perfect opportunity for residents to nominate their local heroes.

“Wagga Wagga + Surrounds is a vibrant location with many food and wine offerings, as well as outdoor activities in stunning natural environments, which is particularly appealing for tourists travelling specifically for cycling.

“Wagga Wagga also has a strong market for visiting friends and relatives (VFR), who rely on their hosts to guide them around the city. It’s important to familiarise locals with the cycling and walking opportunities available in the region so they can better enjoy their time exploring with loved ones.”

The new guide, which fits easily into a pocket, are available at the Wagga Wagga Visitor Information Centre at 183 Tarcutta Street.

Before you begin your adventure, whether you are on foot or bike, be sure to keep safe and abide by road rules. Some trails around the area require a higher level of skill for cycling. Cyclists should exercise caution.
