RIVERSIDE REVIVAL REALISED
The city’s eagerly awaited Wagga Beach Riverside Precinct redevelopment was formally opened to the public on Tuesday 14 June 2022, with the unveiling of a plaque marking the completion of Stage 2 of the project. The Riverside redevelopment is designed to turn the Wagga Beach and Murrumbidgee River precinct into an attraction for residents and visitors to the region, and an ideal venue for festivals, markets and musical performances. In preparation for the changes, current members are being encouraged to get their new Wagga Wagga City Library card. Manager Library Services Claire Campbell said new cards will be available at the library for collection from Tuesday 21 June 2022. “You don’t have to come in straight away as your RRL card will keep working for borrowing physical books until it is exchanged for the new Wagga Wagga City Library card,” Ms Campbell said. “However, from 21 June, you will need your new card to access the eLibrary resources online, such as eBooks and eAudio books. eBook users can call the library from 21 June and we will change your card immediately and post the physical card to you for free.”

Council made the decision in September 2021 to become a standalone library service from 1 July 2022 based on extensive community feedback gathered during the 2019/20 Library Review and follow up village consultation process.
Manager Community Services Madeleine Scully said the change will enable the library to offer a broader and more accessible range of programs and resources to the community. “We undertook extensive community consultation as part of the library review, and these changes are in response to the feedback we received,” Ms Scully said. “Our community told us that they held the library service in very high regard and wanted it to grow and be an accessible service across our Local Government Area, not just a focus at the Civic Centre or online. “The standalone library service will enable us to connect with more residents, no matter where they live, across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area.”
ON
The move by Wagga Wagga City Library to operate as a standalone service for residents of the Local Government Area comes into effect at the beginning of July 2022, with a range of new services to be delivered.

CREATIVE TALENT: Art Factory Artist Allison Davis with her series Concept Art (2022).
Dystopian Universe: a new immersive exhibition at the Art Gallery
Local artists from The Art Factory Supported Artist Studio are preparing to launch their immersive exhibition Dystopian Universe at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery this weekend. The Art Factory artists have been undertaking a month-long residency in the E3 Art Space as part of the Art Gallery’s Regional Artist Development Program. Artists featured in Dystopian Universe include performative artist Jacko Meyers, digital and audio artist Damian Triulcio, writer and designer Adrian Buntin, and mixed-media print and sculpture artist Allison Davis. Wagga Wagga Art Gallery Officer Tayla Martin said the E3 Art Space has been transformed ahead of the exhibition opening. “The Art Factory artists have completely changed the space into an immersive experience for visitors by combining a range of art-making techniques and unique perspectives,” Ms Martin said. “We’re really looking forward to sharing the experience with the community when Dystopian Universe opens this Saturday.” The Art Factory residency will
include various short performances from Jacko Meyers, who has been working with local dancer Laura Krebs in the lead up to develop a movement-based work. Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall said she had been looking forward to the return of The Art Factory following its successful 2021 exhibition 5 Years. “The Art Factory continues to foster the development of many of our region’s talented artists, with the Art Gallery’s residency providing participants with the opportunity to collaborate and develop new artmaking ideas,” Dr Hall said. Dystopian Universe opens at 11am this Saturday 18 June 2022 at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery E3 Art Space. The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s Regional Artist Development Program focuses on supporting the development of regional artists and providing them with opportunities for mentoring. For artists in residence this support includes a $2,000 stipend during their residency. For more information visit waggaartgallery.com.au/whats-on

Work continues on Wagga Wagga City Council’s Active Travel Plan this week with the installation of key signage aimed to educate the community on shared path etiquette. Already proving popular, the 13 shared pathways completed as part of the $15.8 million project provide a safe option for adults and children to cycle, walk, scoot or skateboard to destinations around the city. Council Project Coordinator Henry Collie said the sealed and line marked shared pathways are perfect for a leisurely walk, parents with prams, and children transitioning from four wheels to two. “They are designed to be shared equally and be enjoyable for a diverse range of users so it’s important we keep ourselves
and each other safe by following some simple tips,” Mr Collie said. “Riders are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings and respect other people using the path.” Director Projects Silas Darby said all community members want to feel safe and be in a friendly environment. “Knowing the wide range of users of our shared pathways, we are relying on the whole community to help keep them as they were intended – welcoming and safe,” Mr Darby said. “We are so pleased to be seeing more and more children riding or walking to school via the linked pathways, such as Nelson Drive, Ontario Drive and Plunkett Drive on the Lake Albert link.” Billy Hindmarsh, keen cyclist
and head mechanic at Wagga Cycle Centre, praised the shared paths and encouraged more riders to get out and discover the city via bike. “The shared paths and signage introduces kids to the fundamentals of road rules early and gives parents a level of comfort knowing they can get around safely,” Mr Hindmarsh said. “Riders sticking to the left and traveling at a safe speed is key to a safe shared path.” The Active Travel Plan project is jointly funded by the NSW Government and Wagga Wagga City Council. Transformed! Our city’s new Riverside Precinct The $9.93 million Stage 2 project integrates the former St Michael’s Oval and caravan park site into a large multipurpose public recreation space. Works have included a regionally significant allabilities adventure play space, upgraded fencing, lighting, walk and cycle paths, an events stage, parking, new accessible amenities, landscaping, and the installation of CCTV. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said the opening marks the realisation of a vision for the precinct, which began with Stage 1 of the Riverside project – completed in 2014-2015. “I was down here on Monday (13 June) and there were a couple of hundred people, including a lot of families, who were already enjoying the new spaces and facilities,” Cr Tout said. “I just stood there and closed my eyes and listened to the sounds of laughter coming from the children playing, the parents sitting there talking, and others just enjoying themselves. “It confirmed to me that this entire process across three terms of Council of funding, tenders, construction and landscaping, was all worth it.” The Moduplay playground was the winning design as selected by community members in Council’s playground poll conducted in FebruaryMarch 2021. It is inspired by the city’s paddlesteamer past and the old Wagga Water Whizz, and Wiradjuri themes. Cr Tout said Council had partnered with Wiradjuri community members on the project to ensure it delivered great benefits to Wagga Wagga while being respectful of the cultural significance of the site “I hope you agree that together we have achieved a place where there is a balance between the active spaces and other places in the precinct that encourage quietness and reflection,” Cr Tout said. “The Riverside redevelopment has delivered a recreation and events hub that will service both the community and visitors to the region, but it is more than just a destination playground. “Its proximity to the city centre is a key feature, giving people who are at the Riverside precinct
easy access to businesses within the city, generating significant economic benefit to the broader community.” The project was funded by NSW Government’s Restart NSW ($5M), the Federal Government’s Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Fund ($3.08M) and Wagga Wagga City Council ($1.85M). Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund had backed projects that activate iconic tourist attractions, grow destinations and drive economic growth by increasing overnight visitation and business activity in regional NSW. “The Wagga Beach is a gem in the heart of the Riverina and these upgrades mean it will continue to be a place for families and friends for generations to come and enjoy,” Mr Toole said. “The Riverside redevelopment project is exactly what the fund was intended to deliver and I look forward to seeing the economic benefits it will produce for Wagga.” Member for Riverina Michael McCormack MP said he was delighted $3,082,560 from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program went towards this worthwhile project. “This is the result of all three levels of government working together, supporting local jobs and boosting the local economy, to deliver a rejuvenated Wagga Wagga Beach precinct which will provide a wonderful space for the community for generations to come.” Duty MLC for Wagga Wagga, Wes Fang, said the Riverside redevelopment will become a top attraction for residents and visitors to the Riverina. “The Riverside redevelopment will rejuvenate the entire precinct, hosting food and wine festivals, markets, musical performances and other outdoor events,” Mr Fang said. “The new accessibility improvements to the park, including the installation of a changing places facility and an all-abilities playground, mean more people will be able to enjoy this wonderful site and all it has to offer.”

More library services for the LGA Library members who live outside the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area can join the Wagga Wagga City Library as a reciprocal member. All they need to do is show their RRL card to staff and they will be given a new Wagga Wagga City Library card. Like all reciprocal members across the NSW Public Libraries network, they will be able to borrow four items at a time from the Wagga Wagga City Library collection with their new card. Another change will be the new Agile Library service, which features two custom-designed library vans operating a weekly service, delivering books, library services and programs to suburbs and rural villages across the Local Government Area. While the delivery of the custom-designed vans has been delayed due to COVID impacts on the contractor, the new agile service will still start as planned from 1 July. “There will be a click and collect car and van service in place to commence the Agile Library service until the specialised vehicles arrive in midAugust,” Ms Campbell said. “The library wants to make sure that what we
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Support Officer
bring to you is exactly what you want. You can ring the library and tell us what books or authors you like to read, and you can collect them when the Agile Library service visits your suburb or village.” A schedule for the first six months of the Agile Library service has been finalised. The library will be launching a new website on Tuesday (21 June) which will have all the details of the Agile Library timetable and locations available. In preparation for the website launch, the library will be offline on Monday 20 June which means that eLibrary services including internet access, printing and the catalogue will not be available that day. However, the library will be open, with staff ready to assist. Also coming soon: Build! The Library will be heading out to suburbs and rural villages across the Local Government Area in the July winter school holidays, giving kids a chance to connect and create. There’ll be stories, Lego, colouring, and building for kids aged 6-12 years. The program is free and details will be on the library’s new website from 21 June.
