Fusion17 set to be biggest yet From hirsute handmade baked goods to high rotation on Triple J, Wagga Wagga City Council has assembled one of the biggest entertainment line-ups yet for Fusion17. Headlining this year’s free multicultural street festival are musicians Ngaiire, Thelma Plum, Holly Throsby and Elki, along with entertainment from Old Spice, Stiltuesque, The Bearded Bakers and Melbourne-based DJs Saca La Mois, Monkey Marc and Victor Gil Gomez. The diverse range of acts and performers are set to entertain thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds at the Civic

Centre Precinct on Saturday 21 October from 4pm to 9.30pm. “Each year at Fusion we celebrate the 112 countries of origin, 107 language groups and 62 faiths that make up our community,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “And there’s no better way to do that than by sharing our food, art, music and culture with each other. “This year’s entertainment line-up boasts some of most creative and talented performers in the country, which will be complimented by our community performers, food from across the world and more.” The headliners share a passion

for music, whether it’s Ngaiire’s soaring voice that has taken her to the stage of the iconic Glastonbury Festival, or the lyricism of singersongwriter and author Holly Throsby. Elki is known for her powerful alt-pop, while Thelma Plum has dominated the Triple J airwaves with songs like How Much Does Your Love Cost?. With last year’s Fusion festival attracting more than 10,000 people from across the region and interstate, Ms Summerhayes said it has quickly become one of the city’s biggest events. “Events like Fusion contribute to the 1.3 million visitors our city hosts each year,” Ms Summerhayes said.

“Wagga Wagga City Council is proud to make the annual multicultural street festival possible, with our local community and visitors alike able to enjoy eclectic performances, mouthwatering food, pop-up shops and more on the backdrop of our stunning Civic Precinct and Wollundry Lagoon.” For more information on Fusion17, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ fusion. Fusion17 is proudly funded and presented by Wagga Wagga City Council in partnership with Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, Riverina Community College and media sponsor The Daily Advertiser.

A decision concerning the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service has yet to be decided, however, it is anticipated this vital service can also begin from April 2. Detailed studies of Wagga Wagga bins have found that

the majority of “rubbish” in the general waste bin can go to compost. The new system will include a weekly collection of this material with the general waste bin and recycle bin being collected fortnightly. Large families and others adversely affected households can apply for a larger general waste bin.

Full speed ahead for Integrated Transport Strategy

The adoption of the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy and Implementation Plan 2040 (WWITS 2040) at the August Council Meeting means all levels of government, agencies and industry can work strategically towards integrating our transport network. Led by Wagga Wagga City Council, WWITS 2040 not only plans for future economic and residential growth, but will help drive that growth. Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said as well as looking at ways to attract and forward plan for potential large-scale infrastructure projects, WWITS 2040 identifies a number of short-term actions that can be taken to create a

connected, vibrant, healthy, safe and active city. “From better connecting footpaths to improving public transport corridors and removing trucks from the CBD, WWITS 2040 will help create choices for people when it comes to getting around and reflects the needs and expectations of a community that is growing at a rapid rate,” he said. “The hard work on this is only just beginning and Council will now work with industry, local businesses, Federal Government and NSW Government to implement the strategy.” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM thanked everyone that took

part in the consultation process. “Hundreds of people, organisations and agencies made valuable contributions during the community engagement campaign and most of the ideas in WWITS 2040 originated from these contributions,” he said. “This strategy will help us capitalise on opportunities for the region as well as improve everyday movements for individuals.” WWITS 2040 is wide reaching and addresses six key areas; integrated land use, parking, freight and logistics, road network, active travel and public transport. Within these six areas is an integrated approach to address a range of topics raised by the

community, stakeholders and industry experts. Strategies include, but are not limited to: • Improving cycling infrastructure, corridors and networks • Prioritising people over motor vehicles in the core of the city • Investigating innovative public transport initiatives for locals and visitors • Implementing measures to increase the likelihood of the NSW Government duplicating the Gobbagombalin Bridge • Supporting development in the northern growth area through appropriate structure planning • Improve parking in the CBD and health precinct by implementing

Council resolved at the 28 August ordinary meeting to appoint James Bolton to the role of General Manager from 2 September until the newly appointed General Manager joins Council once recruitment is finalised. “I would like to thank Robert for taking time away from his substantive duty at the RRL to fill the role of General Manager at Wagga Wagga City Council,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Conkey OAM said. “Robert has done an exceptional job in leading the organisation for the past six months.” Mr Knight said that he enjoyed the challenges and opportunities that the role of interim General Manager has provided, and very much appreciated the support of Councillors and staff throughout his time in the role. “I was initially appointed to the position of Acting General Manager for a period of five weeks, and now after

Government Area.” James Bolton has previous experience as a Director at Wagga Wagga City Council and is currently heading up the Bomen Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub project. “I look forward to continuing on with the great work that Robert has done in ensuring that the Council is serving the community during the General Manager recruitment period,” Mr Bolton said. “My focus will be ensuring this continues, while providing a

platform for the next General Manager to come in and lead the organisation into the future.” Council also discussed the organisation structure at the meeting and resolved that pursuant to Section 333 of the Local Government Act to retain the existing organisation structure. Section 333 of the Local Government Act states the Council must review, and may re-determine, the organisation structure within 12 months after any ordinary election of the Council.

EXHIBITION OF DRAFT ACTIVATION STRATEGY 2040 AND DRAFT RECREATION, OPEN SPACE AND COMMUNITY STRATEGY 2040

The Recreation, Open Space and Community (ROSC) Strategy 2040 and Activation Strategy 2040 have been developed with the key goal of creating opportunities and liveable communities in a growing economy. The strategies draw on the guiding principles in Wagga View: Community Strategic Plan 2040, the Riverina Murray Regional Plan and other City of Wagga Wagga strategies to develop a co-ordinated approach to the planning and delivery of services so that it occurs in a sustainable manner. The ROSC and Activation strategies encourage and promote liveability, employment opportunities, incentives to move to and stay in Wagga Wagga and prevent unsustainable car dependent urban sprawl within the city. Each of these strategy documents will inform the Council’s Development Control Plan and Local Environmental

Plan which are critical to the future of Wagga Wagga. It will also assist with a review of Section 94 Projects to be incorporated into the Contributions Plans and aligned with the strategic documents and the Long Term Financial Plan.
