Major events funding now open! Council is now accepting applications for the 2022/23 Major Events, Festivals and Films Sponsorship funding program.
This funding supports organisers to deliver major events in the city to ensure a vibrant events calendar is developed for our community and visitors. Events Officer Sally Manning said funding amounts between $3,000 and $20,000 are available for events being held between 20 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. “We are excited to support innovative and creative events that deliver strong
social impact and economic returns for the city,” Ms Manning said. “The program recognises the importance of events and festivals in driving visitation and generating economic benefits as well as showcasing our public spaces and enlivening our city.” This funding has previously supported many successful projects, with past recipients including Wagga Mardi Gras, Gears and Beers Festival, Wagga Swap Meet, along with locally produced film The Merger. There are three categories of funding available; incubator events, development events and flagship events, catering for the different lifecycle stages an event progresses through.
Applications will remain open and be assessed periodically until June 2023 or until allocated funds are exhausted. There are four assessment rounds throughout the financial year, with the first round closing on Friday 10 June 2022. Pump station transformations given the thumbs up
From front page Created by artist Carla Gottgens in April, the vibrant creative treatment was funded by Council. Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds recently visited the pump station to meet with the students who workshopped the design with the artist. “The students have been involved in this project from the start and were so excited to see the finished mural,”
Ms Reynolds said. “There are all these amazing and colourful scenes featuring native flora and fauna and sporting activities, inspired by the images the students created during the workshop program with the artist.” The stunning new mural at the pump station at Bolton Park (near the skate park) has also been completed. Artist Jeff McCann held workshops with young people aged between 12 and 24 years to create the artwork which features a ‘Mosaic of Selfies’. CREATIVE TALENTS: ‘Mosaic of Selfies’ - (L to R): Georgia Crowden, Sarah Smith, Artist Jeff McCann, Bella Shumack, and Council Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds at the newly transformed Bolton Park pump station.

CREATIVE TREAT: (from left) Manager Civic Theatre Carissa Campbell and Double Delicious Concept and Dramaturge Annette Shun Wah are excited about what’s in store for audiences when the show hits the stage in Wagga Wagga.
A food and storytelling sensation on the menu at the Civic Theatre Following sell-out seasons at Sydney Festival, Asia TOPA and OzAsia Festival, Double Delicious will play to local audiences at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre this weekend as part of its NSW and Victoria tour. A sumptuous night of storytelling served with a side of dishes straight from the heart, Double Delicious brings together five storytellers to share the secrets behind the dishes that have been significant in their lives. The show delivers audiences double the experience; the unique opportunity to both hear and taste the story. Sour, salty, bitter and sweet, each story culminates in an authentically recreated taste of the storyteller’s chosen dish, prepared by local caterers. Manager Civic Theatre Carissa Campbell is excited to once again be pairing theatre with food. “We’ve always loved combining theatre and food to create a complete experience, but this show takes that to the next level,” Ms Campbell said. “The audience will be seated at banquet tables on the stage. The food inspires the theatre stories being told and it is clear that food is central to so many important moments in our lives.” Kimchi master Heather Jeong recalls meeting her father for the first time at the age of nine, while dancer-choreographer Raghav Handa grapples
with the loss of ritual, and how it fits into his contemporary life in Australia. Performer Valerie Berry recalls the shock of moving, as a child, from bustling Manila to outback Ceduna. Writer and comedian Jennifer Wong recounts the many kinds of sweetness that nourish and heal, and writer Benjamin Law tells the hilarious story of growing up in the shadow of the Big Pineapple. Comedian and presenter of ABC’s Chopsticks Or Fork? Jennifer Wong said “as a food enthusiast, I’m looking forward to the possibility of the audience discovering a new favourite food from watching Double Delicious”. But of course the show is not just about the food. “I’m excited to be able to share my story alongside four other performers, and to discover the vivid memories about food and family that come up for the audience after they’ve heard our stories and tasted our dishes,” Ms Wong said. “This truly is a show that tantalises all the senses. The flavours and aromas of our favourite dishes wind their way through our memories and demonstrate how a particular meal can transport us back to a pivotal moment.” You can find out more about the show and get your tickets at civictheatre.com.au

Council today announced details for the city’s new-look winter festival, the Festival of W, which will run for two weeks over the winter school holidays. The 2022 Festival of W program will be held from 2–17 July in the city centre and feature a host of exciting installations, musicians, pop-up food and drink vendors and the return of the popular ice rink. Events Officer Emma Corbett said she was excited to expand the winter festival from a one-night event into a two-week festival for the community and visitors to the city. “We’re really looking forward to bringing the community together and supporting the local creative, hospitality and event industries during what is typically a quieter time of year,” Ms Corbett said. “We have a host of offerings running continuously over the two weeks, such as the ice rink, creative lighting installations, and pop-up food and drink vendors. “The ice rink is returning in a larger format and will be the only ticketed part of the festival, operating every day over the two-week period.” Celebrations for the Festival of W will launch on Saturday 2 July from 4pm – 9pm with an evening of live music, a sumptuous range of food and drink offerings, roving performers and entertainment in the Victory Memorial Gardens and Civic Centre Precinct.

Wagga Wagga to host major orienteering carnival on June long weekend More than 300 orienteers and their families will converge on Wagga Wagga over the June long weekend for the annual Queen’s Birthday carnival that will deliver an economic boost to the city. Wagga Wagga’s central location and terrific orienteering terrain made it an ideal choice to host the carnival, which will bring competitors from NSW, ACT and Victoria. With some of the best orienteering land in Australia, and lots of local attractions, the athletes – who will range in age from eight to 80 – have plenty to look forward to. “Orienteering NSW is excited to be hosting this major annual NSW orienteering carnival,” said Orienteering NSW President Robyn Pallas. “The area is blessed with great terrain, plenty of accommodation, and a location accessible to the main population states.
“The weekend should be a boost to orienteering in general and the tourism industry in and around the Wagga area. We have a team of experienced local and state orienteers to ensure a smooth carnival. “We also thank the Wagga Wagga City Council for their support in attracting this event.” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said Council was pleased to support the event and welcomed competitors to the city. “It is wonderful to see state carnivals such as this one being held in a regional area and it is yet another feather in the city’s cap when it comes to hosting topdraw sporting and cultural events,” Cr Tout said. “It is a great opportunity for us to showcase what Wagga Wagga and surrounds have to offer on the
sporting and tourism fronts and it will deliver major flow-on effects for local businesses who can capitalise on the visitors it brings to our city.” The three days of competition will test participants in a variety of terrains over different distances each day. Events are: • S aturday June 11 – Middle Distance at Murraguldrie State Forest • Sunday June 12 – Long Distance at Murraguldrie State Forest • Monday June 13 – Sprint Distance at Charles Sturt University. The Woman in the Library: Local author book launch
Wagga Wagga City Library hosted the book launch of local author Sulari Gentill’s latest novel, The Woman in the Library this week. Ms Gentill, a highly successful author from Batlow, was in conversation with Library Programs Officer Peter Casey. Described as an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure, The Woman in the Library examines the complicated nature of friendship – and shows that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all. Mr Casey said he enjoyed chatting with the author in person. “We’ve been aiming to get Sulari in for ages, she’s been writing for years, and this is the first opportunity we’ve had to bring her to the library,” Mr Casey said. “The Woman in the Library is a standalone novel, it’s not part of a series, so we thought it was approachable for new audiences – it’s ideal for anyone who loves crime and twisty murder mysteries.” Mr Casey said the library was keen to BOOK LAUNCH: Library Programs Officers Peter Casey and Wendy Harper ahead of the Wagga host free literary events for local book Wagga City Library’s launch of The Woman in the Library by local author Sulari Gentill. lovers.

“This book launch gives the library an opportunity to bring likeminded people together to build up a community of readers – it’s been a while since we’ve been able to do that.” Library Programs Officer Wendy Harper said strong bookings for many of the library’s upcoming book launches indicated a growing community desire to see authors in person. “There’s something special about seeing an author whose work you admire in person,” Ms Harper said. “I think it indicates that people want to be seeing each other in person and to feel that the author is in the same room as you again, not just zooming in remotely from Sydney or Melbourne.” Attendees at this event were among the first to have the chance to purchase The Woman in the Library and have it signed by Ms Gentill, the novel only hitting bookstores on 1 June 2022.
