GOOD BOYS: This pair of Maltese-crosses who were left at shelter (above) have been given a makeover and are ready for adoption.

FRESH START FOR SCRUFFY PAIR ABANDONED AT SHELTER

Here’s a handsome fellow ready to find his purr-fect new home. Meet Sam, a male ginger domestic shorthaired tabby. Sam is a sweet, gentle boy who adores cuddles and pats, and

lounging around. It would be best for this lad to be adopted into a dog-free home, as he doesn’t play nice with canine companions. Sam is ready to be adopted for a reduced

This is one tail that’s sure to make you paws for thought. With their shiny, short coats and bright eyes, it’s hard to believe these two loveable rogues were abandoned outside the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter in almost, unrecognisable condition. “They were left tied to the gate with just their bedding,” Council's Animal Welfare Officer Keli Stephens said. “It’s something that doesn’t happen very often, but it does happen. “And it can be quite scary for the dogs or cats.”

The Maltese-crosses were discovered looking a little worse for wear. “Their fur was pretty heavily matted and they were dirty and scruffy,” Ms Stephens said. “We decided the best thing we could do was give them both a mini makeover.” The pair was taken ta groomer for a lovely, warm bath and welldeserved clip. “They look like completely different dogs,” Ms Stephens said. “A grooming session can help improve a dog’s chances of

being adopted quickly.” The friendly pair, believed to be brothers, are otherwise healthy, and ready to be welcomed into a new, fur-ever home. “We really want them to be adopted together,” she said. There’s hope the fur siblings will soon receive their happy ending, with Ms Stephens revealing there’s already interest in the duo. The small dogs can be adopted for $321.50 each, or, ideally, $643 together. This includes desexning, microchip, lifetime registration, worming and an ID tag.

Wagga Wagga City Council and Wagga Wagga Police Local Area Command are working to reduce opportunistic crime through a new joint campaign ‘Park Smart’. Park Smart aims to raise awareness of the risks of leaving your vehicle unlocked and valuables in sight. During discussions between Council and Police, steal from motor vehicle and motor vehicle theft were identified as two areas of concern. The campaign will include a number of ways to increase awareness in the community, including promotional material, social media and street parking audits. “The Park Smart campaign works to raise awareness of the small, everyday things we can do to minimise opportunities for these crimes to occur,” Council’s Director Community Janice

REMINDER: Launching the Park Smart campaign are Youth Development Officer Vanessa Jennings, Director Community Janice Summerhayes, Mayor Greg Conkey and Wagga Police Inspector Peter McLay.

Summerhayes said. “Through the campaign we want people to remember to remove all devices like phones, iPads and electronics, as well as handbags, small change and other valuables when leaving the vehicle.” “And most importantly, remember to always

lock your vehicle.” “Not letting thieves ‘smell an opportunity’ is the key takeaway of the Park Smart campaign, with car air fresheners and postcards available to remind you. “Police and Council will also be conducting a visual audit of areas within the CBD to highlight potential theft opportunities to

the community and to distribute Park Smart tips to the community.” The Park Smart community awareness campaign builds on Council’s Crime Prevention Plan 2021 as well as supporting the introduction of the new Crime Prevention Working Group, which held its first meeting on 26 August.

Youth to help shape city's future at forum Are you a teenage visionary with a bold plan for our city’s future? Or a young person with big dreams? Well, Wagga Wagga City Council needs you. “We are trying to educate young people on the lifecycle and longevity of a Council project,” Council's Youth Development Officer Vanessa Jennings said. “We want to help our young people realise that the grand idea they have for the city, could very well be the project they’re managing 10 years down the track. “Or maybe they’ll be on the bobcat turning the first sod to

get works underway.” Councillors and staff hope the ‘Shape Your City’ Youth Forum on Wednesday 11 September will give young people a chance to have their voices heard in a supportive environment. “We’ll have six tables of projects, including the library review, the Civic Theatre’s Plug and Play, the Health and Knowledge Precinct, Riverside and Entwine on offer,” Ms Jennings said. “Social Planning will also host a Blue-Sky Thinking session. “Each student will participate in two engagement sessions.” It’d hoped the forum will showcase the “gamut” of

employment opportunities that exist within Council. “We want our young people to realise they don’t have to leave the city to pursue a variety of exciting and rewarding career pathways,” Ms Jennings said. The empowering forum will enable young participants to walk away with a better idea of how they can influence local government projects and play a role in shaping their city. The event will run from 10am to 3pm inside the Councillors Meeting Room, with lunch provided. Local comedian, Aidan Mungai will facilitate the forum. To register for the 18 years and under forum, email youth@wagga.nsw.gov.au.

Two new laydown change facilities in CBD

IMPROVING ACCESS: One of two new adult laydown change facilities was unveiled this week.

Residents and visitors living with a disability will be more empowered to participate in community events, and lead more engaged lives, thanks to the addition of two more laydown change facilities in Wagga’s CBD. Just months after unveiling the renovated public toilets in Baylis Street’s Bangayarra Walkway, Wagga Wagga City Council has completed a major refurbishment to The Rest Centre in Morrow Street. The state-of-the-art amenities facility, adjacent to the Victory Memorial Gardens, will also play a crucial role in restoring dignity to adults living with a disability. “Access, it’s all about people having more equal access,” Council's Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “There’s a lot of people

IS IT TIME TO START SPRING CLEANING?

Take the hassle out of your spring cleaning with Wagga Wagga City Council’s hard waste service. If you’ve got an ever-growing pile of broken or unwanted household items you were planning on taking to the tip “one day”, then it’s time to kick it to the kerb. As part of your kerbside waste service, households that pay the domestic waste management service charge are eligible for one free hard waste collection each calendar year. “The feedback from the old Free Tip Days was sometimes the community had difficulty accessing a vehicle or trailer, or that the days weren’t always convenient,” Gregadoo Waste Management Centre Manager Geoff Pym said. “With the hard waste service, the truck comes to you on a pre-booked

in our community who have actually been changed on bathroom floors and in the back of cars, and it’s just so degrading.” The project is recognised as another step towards providing the residents and visitors with peace-of-mind, so they can enjoy better access to parks, festivals and retail outlets. “People in our community will no longer have to leave our events to go home and get changed,” Ms Summerhayes said. The Rest Centre offers toilet and shower facilities, an automatic hoist and electronically adjustable height bed, along with a kitchenette and lounge area. “The city now has two additional refurbished public facilities which are safe, clean and

comfortable, and most importantly, there are now two lay down change facilities available any time of the day or night,” she said. “People requiring a higher level of access, and their carers, will benefit greatly from this project.” Members of the public who require access can obtain a Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK), available from all participating locksmiths. The project was identified in Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (2017-2021), which is a guide to increasing inclusion and improving the city’s liveability for people with disabilities. Council received $250,000 funding under the NSW Governments Stronger Country Communities Funding initiative towards the project.

If you have any questions or want to check, please visit the website or give Council a call.” Mr Pym said that while the hard waste service makes it easier for residents to dispose of larger items, Council encourages the community to follow

the Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Landfill hierarchy. Before you dispose of your unwanted items through the kerbside hard waste collection, take a minute to think about whether they can be reused or recycled. “Landfill should always be the last option and there are is a wide range of items that you can take to Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) for free,” Mr Pym said. “Polystyrene,

cardboard, automotive batteries, up to 100l of paint, up to 20l of motor oil, televisions and computers are accepted free of charge at GWMC every day. You can also drop off unwanted items that are still in good condition to the GWMC Tip Shop, which is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.” For more information and to book your collection, visit yourwaste.com.au/ hardwaste or call (02) 5942 6150.

Wagga Wagga City Council will throw its support behind R U Ok Day next week, by hosting a morning tea on Thursday 12 September. The national suicide prevention campaign is designed to equip all Australians with the skills and confidence they need to support those who may be struggling.

The empowering movement seeks to highlight the importance of regular, meaningful conversation as a way to foster connection and build a sense of belonging. Simply asking, “are you ok” is a powerful place to start. Council’s morning tea will be

held in the foyer of the Civic Centre from 10am to 11am. All members of the public are invited to come in for cookie and a chat. Volunteers will be on hand to help visitors better understand the signs and changes, indicating someone might be struggling. Lifeline: 13 11 14

EXHIBITIONS TO CELEBRATE AND EXPLORE WAGGA’S HISTORY The rich history of arts and culture in our community will be celebrated and explored across three unique exhibitions at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The Wagga Wagga Art Society will mark its 70th anniversary and the Wagga Wagga Potters Club will chalk up 50 years with new exhibitions. Meanwhile, Wagga Wagga’s history will be in the spotlight in an interactive look at the tale of Tom Castro.

In the Claimant, open from Saturday 31 August, artist Scott Howie explores Castro’s life through performances, a panel discussion and more. In 1845 a newspaper advertisement seeking news of Roger Tichborne prompted now infamous Wagga Wagga butcher Thomas Castro to wildly claim to be the long-lost heir to the Tichborne fortune. Castro’s story ended in a bitter contest for the estate, a historic perjury

trial, prison and a pauper’s grave. Meanwhile, Wagga Wagga Potters Club: The first fifty years is on exhibition now 20 October. Since 1969, the club continues to enrich the lives of its members and the public by providing the opportunity to learn a range of ceramic techniques in a welcoming environment. The anniversary exhibition celebrates this significant milestone by including

members’ ceramic works from the past 50 years, traversing a range of studio practices and styles. Stretching back further into local history, the Wagga Wagga Art Society will mark its 70th year with an exhibition paying tribute to past members, presidents, artists and tutors who contributed to the growth and success of the society and their role in the development of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. In December 1949 a group of enthusiasts with

a deep appreciation of the arts met at the home of Mrs Joyce Jenkins to discuss the formation of a society. This was the founding moment of the Wagga Wagga Art Society. Seventy years later - the society continues to support arts practice in the region and champion regional arts practice in the Wagga district. The 70th anniversary is on exhibition from 7 September to 20 October. To find out more, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/gallery.

A project to connect two well-loved community spaces the Botanic Gardens and the Museum of the Riverina - takes a step forward this week with the award of the design tender. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said the project, known as Entwine, will develop additional leisure spaces in the Botanic Gardens and create a user-friendly pedestrian connection to the Museum to encourage visitation between the two facilities. “The Botanic Gardens is one Wagga Wagga’s great assets, and Council is committed to improving and expanding the facilities available for the community to enjoy," she said. “The project will include new low maintenance interpretive trails and sensory gardens that are designed to be accessible to all. “The renewal of

the Brolga Pond is also within the project scope, as is the upgrade of the kangaroo, emu and alpaca fences in the Botanic Gardens Zoo.” “The Australian Native Flora section of the Gardens will be upgraded through the addition of barbecues, shelters and interactive play spaces, to provide the community with another area to enjoy.” The design will be completed by the end of the year and construction is set to begin in early 2020. Entwine is occurring concurrently with the redevelopment of the Museum of the Riverina (Botanic Gardens site) which is scheduled to re-open in spring 2021. Entwine is funded through a $739,466 grant awarded from the NSW Government Regional Growth – Environment & Tourism Fund and the balance contributed by Wagga Wagga City Council.
