The 2018 National Apology Day ceremony will be held on Tuesday 13 February, starting with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Kath Withers and speech by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM. “Apology Day 2018 will commemorate the 10th anniversary of a very important step by our government that acknowledges the policies that led to the Stolen Generation and the ongoing pain these policies have caused,” Cr Conkey said. “The Apology was a significant and historic moment for all Australians and particularly for the many people, including those in the Riverina, who had been personally affected by the policies that resulted in the Stolen Generation.” The Federal Government Apology was delivered by the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and also represented the completion of one of the five key

measures of reparation recommended in the 1997 Bringing Them Home Report, with 2018 being the 21st anniversary of the report. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Aboriginal Youth and Community Development Officer Ashleigh Pengelly said the Healing Place at the wetland was the perfect place to reflect on National Apology Day. “Coming together as a community on the anniversary each year offers everyone an opportunity for reflection and healing,” she said. “It’s only fitting that we are holding such an event at the Marrambidya Wetland Healing Place, which was constructed in consultation with the local Wiradjuri community.” The Healing Place features native plants, a seating area and a hand carved totem pole. The totem pole was created by Wiradjuri Elders and has been donated to the site by the artists and TAFE NSW Riverina Institute. The community is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by a morning tea.

The construction of the $9M dollar sports complex will be completed by Albury-based company Zauner Constructions. Director of Zauner Construction Garry Zauner said residents can expect to see the stadium’s structure take form within the next two to three months. “From this week you will be able to see site preparation and substructure work being undertaken, and within a few months the steel frame structure and walls will be visible,” Mr Zauner said. “We hope to have project completed in late November.” The MPS will feature three indoor courts, change rooms, seating for more than 600 spectators and a function space with catering facilities. There will be minor traffic delays on a section of Mitchell Road for the next four to six weeks while an $820,000 road rehabilitation project takes place. The works on Mitchell Road between Cummins Road and Gregadoo Road will start on Tuesday 13 February, with the project to be undertaken in stages to limit the impact on traffic. Works will be undertaken between 7am to 5pm with stop/ go traffic control in place. Temporary closures maybe required when working across intersections,
but traffic flow along Mitchell Road will still be under stop/go control. Access will be reinstated at the end of each day and local access will be maintained during the works, with staff on site able to assist residents if required. A total of 2.1km will be rehabilitated, along with a small section of Silverwood Road. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Manager Operations Stephen Jewell said rehabilitation works are the most comprehensive type of road projects that Council undertakes.
