preparedness if they are called to respond. “Our teams have been working around the clock to ensure the highest level of flood-risk management is carried out and we are prepared and ready to go for any flood event,” City of Wagga Wagga Acting General Manager Robert Knight said. During the week two dirt stockpiles were moved to Wilks Park at North Wagga. precautionary measures only given current Murrumbidgee River levels and forecasted rain events. “I would like to assure residents that these measures are simply precautionary and there should be no need for concern,” Mr Knight said. Staff have also been monitoring water over roads and closing flooded roads as necessary. Since last week 12 roads have been closed in the Local Government Area, including Wiradjuri Reserve. Parts of the Wagga Wagga Beach and Lake Albert walking tracks have also been closed at times.
“A number of these roads remain closed and there could be more closures with the impending rain forecast for tomorrow and the weekend,” Mr Knight said. “Some of the regions roads have also deteriorated in the recent wet weather. “We remind motorists to drive to the conditions and never drive through flood waters.” A full list of road closures are available at wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads or on our Facebook page. Updates on the current minor flood event at Wagga Wagga are available at www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/ and www.ses.nsw.gov.au.

AARADHNA
A break-dancing grandpa, a doowopping sextet, a Riverina soul sister, a hip-hop trio from the big smoke and a chart-topping songstress from New Zealand. A mix so fabulously diverse can only mean one thing - it’s Fusion16 time. For the sixth year running, the Civic Centre Precinct will burst to life for Wagga Wagga’s multicultural street festival Fusion16 on Saturday 15 October. Headlining this year’s festival are dance floor grooving grandad Old Spice, shiny, sugary sweet disco revival crew Sugar Fed Leopards, soul sensation and ARIA award-nominated songstress Kylie Auldist, Sydney afro-funk, hip-hop trio True Vibenation and New Zealand born singer-songwriter Aaradhna. Fusion now attracts 10,000 people, and each headliner is ready to entertain each one of the festival-goers. “I might be over the hill, but I am also over the moon excited about the Fusion16 line-up,” Old Spice said. Fresh off the back of creating the world’s slowest conga line at Splendour in the Grass music festival, Old Spice is looking forward to busting a sweet move in Wagga and getting the crowd on its feet. “I’ll be throwing caution to the wind, my walking stick to the ground, and will be getting down as far as my replacement hip will allow to the sweet beats and soulful tunes of Kylie Auldist, Sugar Fed Leopards and True Vibenation!” Kylie Auldist can’t wait to take to the Fusion16 stage, with the performance a sort-of home coming for the soul sister

Meanwhile, the Sugar Fed Leopards, whose costumes have more sparkle than a shiny disco ball, are looking forward to seeing Wagga’s wild side on the dancefloor, and are excited to release the first single off their new album. “We are super excited to visit Wagga Wagga for the Fusion festival, no one from the band has been there yet and it’s such a good opportunity for us to visit this famous town. I am sure the place will be in fine form for this wild festival,” Lead vocalist Sugar Breath, aka Steph Brett, said. Rounding out the line-up is NewZealand born beauty Aaradhna, who will
#FUSIONWAGGA CHANGES TO EMERGENCY SERVICES PROPERT Y LEV Y
Property owners will notice an additional charge on their rates notices from 1 July 2017, which will be used by the NSW Government to fund vital emergency services. Currently, the Emergency Services Levy is collected by insurance companies, which means only those properties that are insured contribute to the levy while those that are uninsured still benefit. Under the new system, the levy will be more evenly shared across land owners and Council will be reimbursed for any costs incurred during the process. Council will be required by law to apply the Emergency Services Property Levy (ESPL) via rates notices on behalf of the NSW Government The levy amounts will then be forward directly to the NSW
Government where it will be used to fund Fire & Rescue NSW, NSW State Emergency Services and NSW Rural Fire Services. In preparation for the new ESPL, Council is currently undertaking a land classification process. Each parcel of land will fall within six categories – government, public benefit, farmland, residential, industrial, and commercial. Council will advise land owners (or lessees) of their classification by 30 April 2017. Land owners will be able to make an application for a review of their classification by 31 August 2017. For further information on the introduction of the ESPL, visit emergencyservicespropertylevy.nsw. gov.au. Council will also keep the community updated as any more details become available.

PARKING BOOST: A centre-of-road parking trial on Kincaid Street between Ftizmaurice and Trail streets will start next week to address parking concerns in the area.
Centre-of-road parking trial for Fitzmaurice Street area Twenty-six new parking spaces will be created near Fitzmaurice Street as part of a six-month trial starting on Wednesday 14 September. Centre-of-road parking will be implemented on Kincaid Street between Trail Street and Fitzmaurice Street to address concerns from the community and nearby businesses. As part of the trial, 16 south side and two north side parallel parking spaces will be removed to allow 40 centre-of-road spaces to be created. The new spaces will be 90-degree parking and will have no time restrictions during the trial. “Centre-of-road parking is commonly used in cities and towns across Australia as a practical, affordable way of increasing the availability of car parking in busy areas,” Director Economic and Commercial Development James Bolton said.
“The trial along Kincaid Street will increase the overall parking capacity of the street from 41 spaces to 67. “If the trial is successful, centreof-road parking can potentially be expanded to other nearby streets to create about 60 more car spaces than we currently have in the area.” The trial period will include the busy Christmas period and feedback will be sought from the community and business owners about the functionality of the parking. Temporary separation kerbing will be used during the trial period, with permanent traffic islands to be installed if the trial is successful. Council will also then look at opportunities to beautify the streetscape to fit with the popular Fitzmaurice Street area. The new initiative is the latest parking improvement for the area following the introduction
of timed parking restrictions on Fitzmaurice Street in June. Both trials are outcomes from the May Ordinary Council Meeting. “This new parking trial follows a change in timing restrictions on Fitzmaurice Street and Council has been working with nearby businesses to improve parking in the area,” Mr Bolton said. “Council staff have thought outside the box to find a low-cost solution that can be implemented quickly and easily, and we look forward to hearing the feedback on the centre-of-road parking trial.” Kincaid Street will be closed to traffic between 9am and 3pm on Wednesday 14 September for line marking and to install the temporary separation kerbing. Residents are reminded to take care in the area during the trial period as they adjust to the changed traffic conditions.

WAGGA WAGGA CITY COUNCIL
PLAY A PART IN WAGGA PARK UPGRADES
Ashmont, Forest Hill and Bourkelands residents, have you got a bright idea for your neighbourhood park area? The City of Wagga Wagga is upgrading three open spaces, Kokoda Street Park, Forest Hill Oval and Bedervale Street Park, and would like to hear from you, the residents, about what you would like to see in these spaces. “We want these community spaces to be used to their maximum potential, so it makes sense to ask the residents in each neighbourhood what it is they would like to see in the park area,” Manager Environment and Recreation Services Mark Gardiner said. “Each project is subject to budgets and overall community wishes, however, we are hoping to receive a mix of diverse suggestions and wishes from residents.” Something new to Wagga that could be considered at the Forest Hill or Bourkelands park areas is the inclusion of parkour equipment. Parkour is a relatively new training trend where an individual, or groups, negotiate a range of obstacles and equipment, such as vaults, jumps and climbing walls. “These upgrades are about improving the overall

useability and appeal of each space. If there are upand-coming trends or activities that people are in to, then we encourage you to put your idea forward for consideration,” Mr Gardiner said. The vision for Kokoda Street is to create a small, fun park for Ashmont residents. Some ideas for this space could include a multi-use/Aussie rules goal posts, concrete handball court, bench seating or tree plantings. The Forest Hill Oval upgrade aims to improve the area for all residents and enhance recreational facilities for youths. Possibilities for this space could include a new small-to-medium sized skate park, parkour training equipment, new picnic node or landscaping could be carried out. Council will begin the second phase of works at Bedervale Street Park in Bourkelands. Recently completed works included, installing a new cricket pitch, basketball backboards and rings, sealed walking track and oval irrigation. The second stage of the upgrade could see a new concrete handball court, parkour equipment, fitness stations or new furniture incorporated. All upgrade works are part of Council’s long-term commitment to upgrade and improve park and play areas across the Local Government Area.

HISTORY TOLD THROUGH HOMES AT MUSEUM The Museum of the Riverina’s latest exhibition is putting new meaning in the expression “if these walls could talk,” by telling the history of Wagga through the evolution of home architecture. Wagga House: Wagga Home explores the changing shape of homes in Wagga from the Victorian era to today and is a story of a people adapting how they lived to cope with a harsh climate, solve health issues, and changes in technology. The exhibition surveyed some of the key local architects who set the tone for the post-war boom, filling suburbs such as Turvey Park and Lake Albert with diverse and aesthetically pleasing home designs. For example, Steve O’Halloran modified architectural styles from the warmer parts of Europe, creating appealing homes that could handle hot local summers, hence the popularity of Spanish mission-style and Romanesque architecture during these years. Gordon Trafford-Walker channelled the clean modernist lines imported into the country by Harry Seidler, creating striking homes and municipal buildings.
