July 2022 as part of the move to a standalone library service. Council made the decision in September 2021 to become a standalone library service based on extensive community feedback gathered during the 2019/20 Library Review and follow-up village consultation process. Acting Library Services Manager Christine Bolton said staff have been loading the vehicles with “much excitement and anticipation” in preparation for their official start. “Now the vans have arrived, we will be able to provide a complete service to residents in our villages and suburbs, with access to a significant collection of library items,” Ms Bolton said. “The service is the gateway to the

main library, so if someone wants to reserve something and have it delivered out to their village or suburb, we will be able to do that with the Agile Library. “It’s an important step in providing equity and access across the city and surrounding Local Government Area for our community, particularly for those who face transport barriers to visiting the library at the Civic Centre.” Prior to the standalone service, only five villages received a fortnightly mobile service. The new Agile Library Service makes regular visits to 18 sites across the Local Government Area, including weekly services to some of the locations as requested by the community. Continued inside

It’s time to recognise our community champions: Council launches 2023 Australia Day Awards

Achievements by local citizens who have made significant community contributions will be the focus of nominations for the 2023 Australia Day Awards. Nominations for five categories opened on Thursday 8 September, giving residents the opportunity to recognise citizens who have made a difference during the past year. Australia Day committee organisers are urging community members to start thinking about local champions who make a contribution in all areas of community life.

Acting Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Jenny McKinnon joined with the city’s 2022 Citizen of the Year, Deidre Tome, to launch the awards. “These awards give recognition to the outstanding service provided by our citizens,” Cr McKinnon said. "There are residents out there who make a difference to our community every day and we want to help tell their stories. “It is wonderful that we can give recognition to our local heroes and reward their community contribution across a range of categories.”

Deidre Tome, who was named the 2022 Citizen of the Year for her extensive contribution to society, believes there are significant benefits in giving to others. “It is a rewarding and satisfying feeling to contribute to our society, to give back to the next generation, and support those who are less fortunate,” Ms Tome said. “Many organisations rely on the contributions by volunteers which support our community and make a difference to so many lives. It is an honour to be given that recognition.” The Australia Day Awards

ceremony will be held at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday 25 January 2023. Nominations are open in the following categories: Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year; Environmental Citizen of the Year; Ted Ryder Sports Memorial Award; and Walk of Honour. The last day for nominations will be midnight, Friday 25 November 2022. To submit a nomination, visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/australiaday For further information, please contact events@ wagga.nsw.gov.au

Wiradjuri cultural exhibition opens at Museum of the Riverina

A stunning exhibition of image, story and weaving led by local Wiradjuri communities, Waybali Murruway – Weaving Paths, opens this weekend at the Museum of the Riverina’s Historic Council Chambers site. Waybali Murruway is a multi-year project developed in partnership with The Wired Lab, which explores Wiradjuri culture and language, along with the creation of cultural objects and caring for Country. Over the past five years Waybali Murruway has had a particularly strong focus on cultural rejuvenation in Wiradjuri weaving practices, resource gathering, and plant identification. The exhibition features woven objects, installation pieces reflecting Country, images, film, wire forms, stories through textiles, and weaving created throughout the project. Curators and Community Liaisons for Waybali Murruway, Aunty Cheryl Penrith and Melanie Evans, said the project and its

resulting exhibition highlight the regenerative power of gathering together on Country. “Waybali Murruway has connected families across four generations and six communities; Brungle, Mitta Mitta, Muttama, Ngurrungera, Wagga Wagga and Gudhamangdhuray,” said Aunty Cheryl. “It's been wonderful to share and pass knowledge amongst each other and onto future generations.” Museum of the Riverina Manager Luke Grealy describes the exhibition as a highlight on the museum's curatorial calendar. ''This project is a significant exploration of Wiradjuri culture and Country,” Mr Grealy said. “The Museum of the Riverina is delighted to showcase this important project and the amazing work of the team.” The exhibition opens on Saturday 10 September and will run until Sunday 20 November 2022. Entry is free. For more information, visit museumriverina.com.au/ whatson

Send your condolences to the Royal Family A condolences book will be available for signing by members of the public at the office of the Federal Member for Wagga Wagga Michael McCormack. Acting Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Jenny McKinnon said Council will be acknowledging the Queen’s death at its next Ordinary Meeting. “It is a very sad day for our community and for communities across Australia and the Commonwealth as, having been a Sovereign for such a long time, Queen Elizabeth II has been a part of the lives of generations of people,” Cr McKinnon said.

“Here in Wagga Wagga, there are still residents who were among the thousands lining the streets to welcome the Queen and Prince Phillip when they visited the city on 13 February 1954 as part of their Royal Visit to Australia. “It was a very exciting day for Wagga Wagga and very fond memories, I think, for those who were here to see it.” During the 1954 visit, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip were greeted by the then Mayor Alderman W.F. (Bill) Dunne and Mrs Dunne, before the Queen gave a speech outside the Council Chambers.

Agile service a 'gateway' to the main library

The 18 sites cover nine villages – Collingullie, Currawarna, Galore, Humula, Mangoplah, Ladysmith, Oura, Tarcutta, and Uranquinty – and nine suburban locations – Ashmont, Boorooma, Estella, Glenfield, Kooringal, Lake Albert, Mount Austin, Tolland, and Turvey Park. The library has been able to offer a broader and more accessible range of programs and resources to these communities, such as the LEAP (Learn

English and Play) program and Storytime sessions. Friends of the Wagga Wagga City Library President, Professor Annemaree Lloyd, said the Agile vans extend the library’s reach beyond its central location and will support the urban and rural communities of Wagga Wagga. “It creates opportunities for people who are not able to visit the main library site to access resources, the expertise of librarians

and library staff, and participate in outreach activities,” Professor Lloyd said. “In doing so, the program addresses important issues within the Wagga Wagga community related to inequality and social inclusion. “The Agile Library program will create a new space for social connection and will help to reduce social and educational barriers, encourage literacy, and support continued lifelong learning opportunities.”

The vans were custom-designed and feature outward facing shelves to make it easier for people to peruse a range of items from the collection, with capacity for restocking. They also have solar panels on the roof which charge the power for lighting and the free wi-fi service. MENTORING ARTISTS: (From left) Regional Artist Development Residency Program Coordinator Mary Egan, Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall, and artist in residence Sophie Chauncy.

WATERWAYS: Artist Sophie Chauncy’s work is inspired by the Murrumbidgee River and the surrounding Riverina landscape.

Become an artist in residence at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery Local artists are encouraged to apply for Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s 2023 Regional Artist Development Residency Program. The residency program focuses on the development and mentoring of early career artists. Four residencies are available, with each recipient receiving a $2000 stipend and the use of a spacious studio environment at the Art Gallery over a fourweek period to pursue their arts practice.

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall said the residency is a great opportunity for local and regional artists to develop their art practice with support and mentoring by gallery staff. “The Art Gallery will partner with Earth Canvas to offer a special opportunity for one of the resident artists, involving both an ‘on farm’ and studio residency,” Dr Hall said. “This is an opportunity for an

interested artist to extend their engagement with themes of healthy landscapes, soil, food and a healthy planet through spending time on a farm committed to regenerative farming practices.” Sophie Chauncy is the current artist in residence at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and has spent her time exploring and responding to the ecosystem of the Murrumbidgee River and surrounding landscape, using a range of mediums across drawing

and painting. “It’s been a really new and exciting experience to work in such a public space because artists do work alone so often,” Ms Chauncy said. “To see the community engage and to see them intrigued and interested in something that I’m sharing has been really amazing. “This program has allowed me to expand my practice, and to get that professional advice and support from the gallery has been

really valuable.” Ms Chauncy is hosting an open studio and artist talk on Saturday 17 September where the community is encouraged to come along and hear about her residency. Applications for the 2023 Regional Artist Development Residency Program close on Thursday 29 September at 4pm. To apply, visit waggaartgallery. com.au

One path, two pedestrian bridges: work begins on Forest Hill cycle link Work started this week on the Forest Hill link of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Active Travel Plan. A one-kilometre shared path and two pedestrian footbridges will be constructed between Kooringal Road and Vincent Road as part of the link. Council’s Associate Director Projects Silas Darby said he is expecting the work to be completed by the end of February 2023, weather permitting. “It’s great to see the first section of the Forest Hill link begin,” Mr Darby said. “We’ll be installing two bridges over Marshalls Creek that are three metres wide and about 20 metres in length. “During construction we ask the public to take extra care when in the area as there will be heavy vehicles and machinery onsite. “The second section of the link will run alongside the

Seven of the 13 Active Travel Plan links have been completed. Aside from Forest Hill, the remaining links are close to completion with minor finishing works such as line marking still to be done. “Carrying out the work for a project that spans the city is not a linear process – it’s rather like putting together a jigsaw puzzle,” Mr Darby said “The construction of link sections is dependent on weather and the availability of contractors and building materials.” The Active Travel Plan project is jointly funded by the NSW Government and Wagga Wagga City Council.
