Riverside Redevelopment Stage 2 works begin Site clearing works currently taking place at the riverside precinct mark the beginning of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Riverside Redevelopment – Stage 2 project.

Riverside – Stage 2 will rejuvenate the entire precinct – from the beach carpark through to the former St Michael’s Oval – in line with the principles of the original Riverside Strategic Master Plan developed in 2009. The redevelopment will include food and beverage outlets, event spaces, and a water and adventure playground, and follows an extensive community consultation process, which included public exhibition of the

concept design. Strategic Asset Planner (Parks & Recreation) Ben Creighton said feedback on the concept design had been overwhelmingly positive. “The community has been excited to see Stage 2 come to fruition, coming off the back of the completion of Stage 1, which has been enormously successful and has seen great utilisation of the Wagga beach area,” said Mr Creighton. “Our river is very important to many members of our community and the success of Stage 1 has shown that it is one of Wagga’s unique assets. It’s also a unique selling point which we can use from both a recreational and tourism point of view.” With event spaces capable of catering for large to small events, Mr Creighton was confident about the possibilities the rejuvenated precinct would offer the city. “It’s a space that will be incredibly flexible in terms of being able to deliver a wide

variety of events. As we’ve seen with earlier events in Wagga, like the NRL and AFL matches, events can be great economic drivers for the city. We expect we’ll be able to leverage off this space and drive economic growth.” With the growing popularity of the beach area, the inclusion of food and beverage kiosks in the Stage 2 concept was extremely popular, as was the water playground. “Traditionally a lot of people have picnics at the river, so the options for food and beverage outlets was something the community highlighted as a priority,” said Mr Creighton. “The water playground is also a unique element of the design, there to give young families a safe alternative to swimming in the river. We also developed the playground in consultation with local youth and schoolkids – it’s something they’re really excited about. BLENDING RECREATION WITH NATURE: There’s something there for everyone.” over 300 native trees will be planted as part of Stage 2 development works. Continues on Page 2.

Crane lifts top deck section on Eunony Bridge project

The first of five sections of Eunony Bridge’s top deck has been removed in a major step forward in the $10.6M strengthening and widening project in Wagga Wagga. The project continues to progress with a large crane and its 80-metre boom at the centre of operations to assist in the old deck removal and replacement with the new. A second 200-tonne crane was also on site last week and assisted in the heavy lifting. Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said work is progressing well and only minor delays were experienced during recent thunderstorm activity in the area. “Works at the site are very visual

now,” Mr Darby said. “Like any project, there is planning and preparation works which need to be carried out before we see any actual construction. And there was also the process of getting this crane on site and assembled, and then operational, before we moved forward. “The process has been challenging but now things are rolling our contractors are doing a fantastic job in reaching project milestones.” The upgrade of Eunony Bridge will deliver a structure that is so strong and wide, that it will carry long and heavy vehicles that are not yet legally rated on New South Wales roads. The bridge will conform to a

rating that is known as SM1600. This is a design load that NSW Transport uses when designing new bridges. “Eunony Bridge is currently narrow and load limited. It cannot cater for the increased size of trucks that may want to access the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub (RiFL) which is being developed,” Mr Darby said. “The new widening and strengthening works will enable the load limit to be lifted so that any vehicle can travel across the bridge.” Work on the project started on Friday 14 February and is scheduled for completion on 1 August this year, weather permitting.

RIVERSIDE – STAGE 2 UNDERWAY

Continued from Page 1. Project Manager Srivalli Miah is responsible for bringing the Riverside – Stage 2 plans to life, and said while designing infrastructure on a flood plain came with challenges, the redevelopment was carefully designed to minimise the impact of flooding. “Because it’s a floodprone area, we’ve designed key elements for a 1 in 100-year flood

event,” said Ms Miah. “Significant infrastructure, for example the food and beverage kiosks, will be in shipping containers which can be removed and stored offsite if we have a flood warning.” Wagga’s use of the riverside has a long history. Once the site of a quarry, it has been used as a trampoline park and more recently a caravan park. Ms Miah said the Riverside – Stage 2 design was

geared towards a more natural appreciation of the area. “We’re currently removing a number of trees that are introduced species, and a few river red gums that are rotted and pose a safety issue. Once those trees are removed, and the large-scale earthworks completed, we’ll be planting about 300 medium to mature native trees – all endemic to the region, as well as many native bushes and smaller plants as well.” “I’m also really excited about incorporating key Wiradjuri community elements into the riverside – I think it blends into the story and adds to the character of the area,” said Ms Miah. “This will be a safe place for families to use the riverside, and for the Wiradjuri community to see their history and culture celebrated.” With a project budget of $6.7M, Riverside – Stage 2 construction works are scheduled to begin later in 2020.

Need someone to cuddle while you’re staying home? Lilly is a beautiful calico domestic medium hair cat. If you’ve never owned a cat before, the domestic medium hair is a good place to start as they tend to be laid-back. We did our best to get Lilly ready for Easter, but she was more interested in having a chew on her bunny ears. She can be adopted for $245.50, which includes microchipping, registration, vaccination, desexing, worming and ID tag. To meet Lilly (impound no. 173) please contact the shelter. R251000208

Rediscover the Wiradjuri Trail As taking exercise is one of the only times we can leave home due to COVID-19 public health orders, residents have an opportunity to rediscover Wagga’s many walking and cycling trails. One special trail is the marathonlength Wiradjuri Trail, which encircles the city, and which – anecdotally – few residents have completed. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said autumn was a perfect time of year to explore different sections of the trail. “It’s 42 kms around the city, and each 10 km section is unique. It’s great to be able walk or cycle in sections,” said Ms Hamilton. “You can also cycle the entire trail. Some sections are steeper than others and more suitable for mountain bikes – particularly behind Lloyd – but the sections around Lake Albert, the lagoon, along the levee bank and wetlands are suitable for road bikes. “A long section of the trail is also wheelchair accessible, with ten separate ramp access points.” The Wiradjuri Trail extends

across many of the city’s significant Wiradjuri places. Murals feature along Cadell Place, the old Hampden Bridge legacy site, Marrambidya Wetland, Flowerdale Lagoon and the Birramal Conservation area – which also has beautiful views across the city, and special poles set up to help endangered squirrel gliders jump and glide between trees. Markers along the track also help share traditional Wiradjuri stories. Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent recently completed a section of the Wiradjuri Trail behind Lloyd, and said while it was challenging, witnessing the multitude of birdlife made the effort worthwhile. “You get spectacular views over the city and it’s really quiet,” said Ms Kent. “I think most residents would be astonished at the natural beauty so close to the city. It’s easy to forget that you can join the trail at lots of different points, not just at the river.” While the benefits of exercise are well known, where you take that exercise is important. Research by Planet Ark found that spending time in nature helps make people

happier, healthier, calmer and feel closer to each other – especially important in a time where many may be feeling isolated. “Any exercise is great for your health, such as being on a treadmill, but you’re not seeing new things and exploring new places,” said Ms Kent. “Over a generation, we’ve seen people spend less time outside, and our feelings of unhappiness and stress have increased, so there’s a definite correlation. It’s probably something many of us can relate to now that we have to spend our days at home. “There have also been studies tracking being outside with people’s dopamine levels. When we’re outside seeing beautiful vistas, trees and birds, our brains release dopamine which makes us feel good,” said Ms Kent. “That’s why it’s important we keep restoring our natural environments and getting out to exercise. And it makes the Wiradjuri Trail all the more special.” Download a copy of the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Trail Map at wagga.nsw.gov.au/city-of-waggawagga/recreation/trails

TRAIL ETIQUETTE

Maintain social distancing guidelines, staying at least 1.5 metres away from others. Exercise alone, or with members of your household. Only be outside if you are well. If you are self-isolating, please stay home. Be mindful that some people may need to pass you. If you are passing someone from behind, alert them by saying ‘hello, passing on your right’. Travel in single file on narrower paths so traffic can go both ways. If wearing headphones, ensure you can still hear what’s happening around you. Keep dogs on a lead at all time. Mental health help It’s important to do things that help us to cope and maintain good mental health. In this unprecedented time, it has never been more important to stay connected while we stay apart. The spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) across Australia and its impacts on rural and regional communities is changing the way we interact with family and friends, introducing new ways of working and significantly curtailing the freedom of movement we previously took for granted.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

The community of Wagga has responded well to managing the current challenges with Covid-19. These are certainly unique times

but I have seen the community working hard to support our health services, our neighbours, our local businesses, and our family and friends. It was then disappointing to see at the last council meeting current

circumstances used as a cover by Councillor Funnell to promote anti-Asian sentiment and sever ties with our sister city of Kunming. It was astonishing to then see it get supported by Councillor Koschel and Braid who both chose to not speak on the

matter. The community’s response since then has been overwhelming, but not surprising. The community has rejected this action and demanded the decision be rescinded immediately. I was

proud to sign the rescission motion on their behalf, as I was proud to stand with Councillor Keenan and Kendall in speaking against the report at the council meeting. The feedback from the community was united, clear, and

The funds are to be applied to purchasing food and supplies to cook meals. Agencies will then be invoiced by Council for the cost of the meals.
